Ugh, I’ve been debating on trying it with condensed milk. I like mixing the softened cream cheese… I’d hate to mess up a good thing. Maybe someday I’ll risk it (maybe)
I was born and grown up in the south in Louisiana, and my mother and grandmother along with my aunts made the custard from scratch because it ensures that it's not too sweet. We never use like the box banana pudding that Magnolia bakery uses so I'm so glad to see that you made the custard from scratch. You're right when you say you have to continuously stir. You're banana pudding looks amazing looked amazing.
i agree 100% banana pudding isn't banana pudding unless you make it with homemade custard I don't know what's the big hype with Magnolia banana pudding other than the way it's served like an ice cream scooped into a container, and it does look good that way, and I think I will be doing that at times with my homemade banana pudding. I just happen to stumble upon a few people videos where others were making Magnolia banana pudding and I thought it was something different, but it's your typical banana pudding, but it must always be made with love that's what makes it extra special 🤗🤗
I grew up in Texas (still here) and I learned how to make banana pudding from my Mom. We ALWAYS made scratch pudding. Later in year's I learned about a banana pudding that called for whipping cream, powdered sugar and vanilla. I cooled my "SCRATCH PUDDING" BEFORE MAKING THE WHIPPED CREAM FILLING. Once cooled, I folded in the whip cream filling into my cream pudding I made. I added extra vanilla to both batches of pudding mixtures. The other thing I did was use Pepperidge Farm Butter cookies instead of vanilla wafers. OMG, it turned out to be the best banana pudding I'd ever tried. I've been making "my" banana pudding recipe ever since. I just laid the butter cookies on bottom of my buttered 13X9 casserole dish. Added half the pudding mixture and bananas, then repeated again. I then crumbled up a few of the butter cookies on top. Everyone who has eaten it begs me for my recipe. I never shared with them but since I watched you struggling with measurements, etc and the fact you traveled to New York and tried the world's best banana pudding I wanted to share MY recipe with you. I do hope you try it and ask you to let me know what your think. By the way, I noticed you commented on your bananas turning dark - I always sprinkled a little lemon juce on top of mine as soon as i slice them. That will prevent them from turning dark. I love your channel and enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work. Best to you -stay well, stay safel. Until later - Linda from Texas
That’s why you use a double broiler or put some water in a pot let it bowl and put a metal bowl over the pot and cook the pudding that way. It’s not good putting it on direct heat or it will burn easily. I know there’s people who cook it like that but the first two options will somewhat eliminate the pudding from burning.
I’m from Alabama and yes making the pudding from scratch is required!! I taste almost immediately when someone tries use boxed vanilla Jello Pudding mix so I’m not a fan of that!! 😊 I usually skip the bananas cuz I don’t like looking at brown bananas but when I do decide to use them squeeze my bananas with a little lemon juice and it keeps them from turning brown and slimy trust me you can’t taste it.
You don't even need to go through all this work making a cooked pudding from scratch. Magnolia bakery released a recipe using 1 and 1/2 cups water, mixed with 14 oz of sweetened condensed milk and add that to a box of Jell-O instant vanilla pudding. Mix that with 3 cups of whipped cream and layer in the Nilla wafers and bananas. It's EXACTLY the same as theirs.
Yeah, once you burn the milk, you'll taste it in the finished product even if you strain it so it's best to just begin from the beginning and make sure to stir it the entire time and do not walk away! LOL There are a plethora of Magnolia Bakery Banana Pudding videos online. Some use pre-made instant pudding mix and others make the custard from scratch. From what I've seen, the actual real secret, whether you use pre-made instant mix or make the custard from scratch, is to whip cream and whip it into the cooled custard or pudding before assembling. Whipping it into the custard creates kind of a mousse like texture, though it's still pretty decadant. Sounds like the recipe you had used condensed milk for the instant pudding instead of whole milk. That might be yet another secret of theirs. I grew up in an African-American community in the south suburbs of Chicago and every single church pot luck and/or gathering that included food would include several banana puddings from different households. They all made meringue for the tops. And yes, they all used the recipe on the back of the Nilla Wafer box with a few variation here and there. Even without the added whipped cream, it still brings back memories of shear delight. They also always assembled the dish while the custard was still pretty warm or even hot. That makes the cookies soft and also makes the bananas taste even sweeter.
I like your effort but you can't call it a Magnolia Bakery recipe if you don't follow the recipe. It has to be Jell-O brand instant pudding and sweetened condensed milk.
People who grew up in the south just see Magnolia as a scam. And the real challenge to making banana pudding is to not eat your Nilla cookies before using them....buy an extra box.
As a Canadian who visited New York shortly before covid 19 and had magnolia banana pudding for the first time. This video is everything and I will be satisfying my craving very soon and trying this recipe! Thank you! Going out now to find some nilla wafers 😊
Thank you I have been wanting to make this from scratch, was not sure if the pudding would set thick enough to work, but the thick cream made it happen, oh I add all my ingredients at the same time including the eggs and bring it to a boil, I use flour instead of corn starch....
Funny thing is, those Vanilla cookies you could not find anywhere in Europe than on Amazon for a horrible price, look very similar to a very cheap kind of cookies you can buy anywhere in Germany called Eierplätzchen (egg cookies).
I have read through a lot of messages and I don't think anyone has mentioned this, I apologise if it's been said and I missed it. your pudding turned runny because you didn't cook it for long enough. there's an enzyme in the cornflour that turns the eggs to water so it needs to be cooked out and that takes at least one whole minute of rapid boiling. its fun watching these old episodes, Jaime you are so much more confident now....I have enjoyed watching you grow
You crack me up...I LOVE this channel. The folks at work are now used to (I think) hearing "ORDER UP!" whenever I finish a task. :) :) :) I cannot eat dairy, but nevertheless, I am making this recipe tonight; will take it to work tomorrow. (The idea of folding in freshly-whipped cream sold me.)
I use vanilla pudding mix then add more vanilla and after it sets I add 1 and half mashed bananas roughly..gives it plenty of vanilla and also makes pudding taste banana real banana. Then i fold in whip cream for fluff. And I chill again only with wafers and let everybody add bananas fresh to it so it last longer in fridge and honestly it doesn't even always need them. I add an entire box of wafers and even add more to remaining if those get eaten it doesn't take long to sogg them..I put them in layers and Edge of bowl as many as can be submerged in various directions when it's just my family and me eating. It's delicous..that's how people in South do It without making from scratch. Also organic vanilla or wholefoods vanilla pudding box is best. Crucial step is adding those mashed banana puree to the pudding and mix. It makes it so creamy and good..appears like you added condensed milk but all the sweet Ness and cream comes from bananas..so not necessary. I have added 1 /4 a can when I have it but don't over Do it. Will be wayyyyyyy to.sweet with wholle.can for one box pudding. I make two box usually. I am pretty sure mine blows this baker's out the water....even this channels..I got my tips from all my GA family reunions etc and that's how it's made down here. I used to always end up with vanilla pudding with bananas like this one..not banana pudding .and if used banana pudding it was disgusting..so this is how you make banana pudding not vanilla pudding plus bananas like so many do because they don't know that secret.. I am tempted to try the homemade custard plus mashed bananas though I think that could work and maybe be the best the most original way perhaps.....ruclips.net/video/LiYFNJfdAG8/видео.html here's a copy of mine basically except like I said I put the chopped in per bowl as eaten. Plus I make homemade whip cream to fold in..but don't over whip cream it only a little.... maybe a cup and half. If you have extra people can add it as topping..
I’ve had the Magnolia’s pudding numerous of times. The banana and chocolate. They both taste like butter, so I’m sure you did it right. There’s an oily after taste to their pudding. I still enjoy them but don’t like that oily texture from their pudding or cream.
Maybe this is why I find their pudding disgusting. When I have banana pudding it's not so rich and creamy or that sweet. Or maybe it's because they are condensed milk into the cream. I've never made banana pudding with condensed milk.
I make homemade Banana 🍌 Pudding 🍮 once a week; I have Alot of people that request it😁😜...I DO make my OWN Vanilla Wafers, which really adds to the Banana Pudding 😳....I use "4" tsp.of REAL Vanilla in them....they taste AMAZING 🤩... My actual "Custard," I make similar to yours, but I add 3 tsp. of Vanilla....and I use Heavy Whipping Cream & Whole Milk...add the Butter at the end, but let the custard 🍮"cool" a little bit before adding the Vanilla; "Hot" Vanilla turns bitter 🤮....The Whipped cream: 3 cups of Heavy Whipping Cream, 2 tsp. Vanilla & 1 cup Powdered Sugar. Don't "overwhip!"😁😜❤️....Pour some lemon 🍋 juice over your banana's so they don't turn brown 🤎.... Shortbread cookies also are a good substitute for Nilla Wafers 😉....I've made it all sorts of different ways....but I stay away from anything "Instant."... It has a "fake" taste....just my opinion....and people can really tell the difference....hope that helps a little bit 😘your pudding looked scrumptious 😋❤️
You should try mashing 1 and half bananas into your custard..totally makes it complete banana pudding not vanilla pudding plus bananas. Yours sounds amazing though other then that!! Trust me its a game changer!!
Way late commenting on the video but I tried made this for the birthday of someone who’d eaten original in NYC, bit of a challenge as I’m in Scotland & like Jamie says, it’s pretty much impossible to get the wafers, but found an online store that would ship a stupidly expensive box & got the pudding mix off Amazon, but it arrived burst so the only one I could get was the banana flavour mix, long story long, it turned out like amped up banana Angel delight & was one of the best puddings I’ve ever tried, the bday person liked the flavoured version better than the vanilla. Only thing I’d change is slice & serve fresh banana on the side, otherwise they turn into slimy black chunks faster than even two enthusiastic people can get through a pudding meant for 8-10 😇
Can you try making ice cream ? Banana Pudding Ice Cream please. I’m from SC and your pudding looks delicious and I’ll be incorporating your whipping cream into my recipe. Thank you so much
I’ve been following your videos for years and somehow never saw this one. This is a classic desert in the south, USA. So good. I swear I could eat and entire batch by myself, which is why we only have it once a year AT MOST. Glad you’ve gotten a chance to try this simple but absolutely banging treat.
First, I LOVE your videos! You are very entertaining and I'm impressed with your ability to adapt on the fly. Your results (almost) always look yummy. I've never attempted banana pudding because my Mom makes one from scratch that is, in my opinion, unbeatable. But, I sit here now waiting on my pudding that's in the fridge because you inspired me. Keep up the good work!
So cool seeing your footage in New York (foreshadowing!) I wish I knew about you when I went to Toronto. We tried to follow in Bourdain's steps. The view from the Canadian side of the falls was amazing! 🎉
That pudding looks so bomb! Banana pudding is one of my all time favorite desserts. I'm not a huge fan of sweets but I have a few things I absolutely Love. This is one of them. I'm from Alabama and banana pudding is something that's beloved down here and people make it for everything. Yours looks a lot like my grandmother's. The only difference is she puts hers in a tall round dish (like a seven layer salad bowl) and will stand some of the cookies up around the edges of the cookie layers. It just makes for a pretty presentation. She usually only did that when making it for a gathering or for church or one of her many different club meetings. Lol!
Add a little sugar to the milk, place it on the stove, it keeps the milk from scalding while it heats up, THEN, add the rest of the sugar and cornstarch.
Awesome vid as always Jamie, thank you! I don't know how you film and cook at the same time- apparently men can't multi-task! Fun fact, you can't over whip 'whipping cream' but you can turn double cream to butter or 'borderline butter'. No Nilla's in Australia either..
PROTIP Taught to me by A i Sicilian chef switch water around in your pot just before you add your milk and then pour it out residual water is fine and it will help prevent the milk from scorching or burning on the bottom of the pot
Thankfully in Germany with have a semi instant pudding mix by dr. Oetker which you need to cook with milk. The Paket is basically starch with some vanilla in it. So that’s how I would make the custard/pudding for this recipe. And we also have an equivalent for Nilla wafers. They’re called Eierplätzchen.
The bananas browning makes the Pudding sweeter :D So its fine to let the Banana's brown, you get sweeter leftover pudding :p And the Sweet Condensed Milk does put it over the top in a good way ^_^
I use to make banana pudding for boyfriend this way. 2 years into the relationship I stated using the boxed stuff. He still ate it and no we are not together anymore.
I'm very surprised that magnolia uses boxed pudding!🤦 Some helpful tips: When you refrigerate your pudding it helps to place plastic wrap over it, actually touching the puddings surface, this will prevent a nasty "skin" from forming on the top. Bananas will brown but they're still very much edible and will actually make the pudding a bit sweeter the browner they become, it just doesn't look too appealing if you're serving to guests as they will also begin to "weep" releasing liquid and making your pudding watery..so there's a small window of eating perfection ; you just have to find it😉 If you don't want them to turn brown, you can do what people do to prevent apples from browning, simply toss them with a bit of lemon juice or any citrus, even pineapple juice and it will slow the oxidation process. Keep in mind to only use enough to toss or you'll add flavor altering your dish..unless that's what you want to do 😊 When you were in NY they sell Nabisco Nilla Wafers in all grocery stores, very cheap, so remember for next time to buy them b4 you leave . I'd be happy to mail you a bunch of boxes too😊 Sorry for the huge post, just thought I'd share some pastry chef tips, love your videos ❤️
Hi I live in new York but haven't tried it yet. however can you make a recipe for just the nilla wafers so people who can't buy it can make it.Your thoughts.
The bananas were underripe. You can see the green on the edges which means they hardly have any banana flavor. Also, cut up the bananas once you need them and not before.
Great show - only came across it recently, and it's very enjoyable. Allow me one comment though: Cups of bananas is likely the weirdest imeprial measurement i have come across within the depth of depravity that calls itself "imperial". :D
U r soo cute!!!😊😊..next time just use the sweetened condensed milk ( 1/2 can ) mix w 3/4 water add 1/2 box of instant banana pudding mix and chill. It will set in like 5-10 min. Then fold in pudding with a tub of cool whip and start layering your pudding wafers and bananas 🙂🙂🙂🙂👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👍🏼👍🏼
How would we learn if you didn’t show us a few boo boos along the way? I probably would have started over a couple times if you hadn’t pulled creative rabbits out of your hat. Another good episode, Jamie! Love the new apron, too. Tell mom she found a good one!
I don’t understand using water. I’m going to use the recipe but mine is the exact same except the water addition I always used milk. Anyone know why water?
I ' VE ALWAYS MADE MY PUDDINGS FROM SCRATCH SINCE I LEARNED HOW . THE BOX BANANA PUDDING IS SO ARTIFICIAL TASTING !! ESPECIALLY THE INSTANT KIND THAT I HAVE BEEN SERVED - YUCK !!
Nailla wafers are not what they used to be. There is no more actual real vanilla in them. Those of us old enough to have come of age before the 1990s can totally tell the difference. Trader Joe’s uses real vanilla, but the texture is all wrong. Still, you can’t really f*ck up banana pudding, rice pudding or chocolate pudding. Just don’t let the milk boil over (happens every time I make rice pudding!). Can’t wait to watch your bakery tours video. That’s next.
But....your pudding doesn't taste like bananas. It tastes like vanilla. So you have a vanilla pudding with bananas in it. Its....not....banana pudding. The Texan in me is sobbing. 😭 Also: If you're serving your pudding to guests, either cut the bananas into the pudding right before you serve them or hand them a banana with their portion. This will prolong the life of the pan of pudding and the guests won't be staring at slimy black bananas, oozing in their pudding.
the sweet condensed milk is THE secret ingredient that sends it over the top... it makes it soooo rich and yummy. you definitely needed that!
Sounds like it tasted just like the real thing ( Magnolias) WITHOUT the sweetened condensed milk though 🤷🏻♀️
Yes but sparingly!
@@honeyvitagliano3227 no way it did!

You could find these wafer cookies probably in any store with Polish food. These are one of the most basic cookies in Poland

Using the condensed milk has NOTHING to do with whether or not you use box or homemade pudding, it's for the particular richness in taste it imparts.

Add a little sugar to the milk, place it on the stove, it keeps the milk from scalding while it heats up, THEN, add the rest of the sugar and cornstarch.
Also, stir in butter and vanilla off heat.
Looks very yummy. I've banana stuff. Fyi you can prevent banana going brown by dusting them with lemon juice 😏-Shawna🍁
Swish** water
Talk about a special dessert for a special occasion 🤤
I love your videos
Thankfully in Germany with have a semi instant pudding mix by dr. Oetker which you need to cook with milk. The Paket is basically starch with some vanilla in it. So that’s how I would make the custard/pudding for this recipe. And we also have an equivalent for Nilla wafers. They’re called Eierplätzchen.
Looks yummy! I love banana pudding.
Very nice recipe good job dude. I found you through the fries vid.
I love it thank you
Been waiting for this one!!!
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS EDITING KING!
As a black person, it was so chaotic watching him make this. And now you forget the magnolias and Magnolia pudding
Hahahaha...The good old bait and switch trick. Sorry to hear about the break up but I'm glad you know why. #Closure #DulyNoted
Love the lumberjack apron.
I'm very surprised that magnolia uses boxed pudding!🤦
Some helpful tips:
When you refrigerate your pudding it helps to place plastic wrap over it, actually touching the puddings surface, this will prevent a nasty "skin" from forming on the top.
Bananas will brown but they're still very much edible and will actually make the pudding a bit sweeter the browner they become, it just doesn't look too appealing if you're serving to guests as they will also begin to "weep" releasing liquid and making your pudding watery..so there's a small window of eating perfection ; you just have to find it😉
If you don't want them to turn brown, you can do what people do to prevent apples from browning, simply toss them with a bit of lemon juice or any citrus, even pineapple juice and it will slow the oxidation process. Keep in mind to only use enough to toss or you'll add flavor altering your dish..unless that's what you want to do 😊
When you were in NY they sell Nabisco Nilla Wafers in all grocery stores, very cheap, so remember for next time to buy them b4 you leave . I'd be happy to mail you a bunch of boxes too😊
Sorry for the huge post, just thought I'd share some pastry chef tips, love your videos ❤️
Where does it say Magnolia Bakery uses boxed pudding?
The recipe he is referring to is a copycat/hacked version of Magnolia bakery’s banana pudding.
Gianni XO
Magnolia specifies in their recipe to only use JELLO Brand instant pudding mix. Google and you will see I’m correct.
Hbomb411 there are lots of bakeries that do a lot of box item the just make it better, so you can’t tell.
Bvvc him
'There is this one ingredient that you can't in Europe'... My inner German was sad looking at her Eierplätzchen for 1€ 😢😂
Yum!! Adding this to the "must make" file.
this guy is underrated :D
Hi I live in new York but haven't tried it yet. however can you make a recipe for just the nilla wafers so people who can't buy it can make it.Your thoughts.
The bananas were underripe. You can see the green on the edges which means they hardly have any banana flavor. Also, cut up the bananas once you need them and not before.
Nutterbutter cookies instead of vanilla wafers. Drizzle a little peanut butter on top. You're welcome.
Great show - only came across it recently, and it's very enjoyable. Allow me one comment though: Cups of bananas is likely the weirdest imeprial measurement i have come across within the depth of depravity that calls itself "imperial". :D
You are fab you made some amounts off butter now x
U r soo cute!!!😊😊..next time just use the sweetened condensed milk ( 1/2 can ) mix w 3/4 water add 1/2 box of instant banana pudding mix and chill. It will set in like 5-10 min. Then fold in pudding with a tub of cool whip and start layering your pudding wafers and bananas 🙂🙂🙂🙂👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Ahaha I love your coolness. That’s a controversial way to make custard.👐🏻😂💜
It’s funny because you can’t buy those Nilla Wafers in Canada now, we have to get them from the US
You can make your own Nilla wafers. Alton Brown does it in his banana pudding recipe on Good Eats.
Best knife skills ever!
Look up southern sassy mama on RUclips she has a home made banana pudding recipe that is absolutely delicious , it tastes just like my mom's
I think you did need the sweetened condensed milk. Right?
Into The Fridge Gang wassup!!!!!!
I’ve made this and it’s sooooo good!
Omg SO GOOD!
Tennessee girl pudding from scratch, but we add half whipped cream, half sour cream a pinch of salt and pecan sandies cookies...
Why don't you use a double boiler?
I cannot find Nilla wafers or anything similar here on Canada’s West coast.
This video made me laugh 😆
thank ya!!!
I heard the bakery released their banana pudding recipe on IG.
Where is it?
can i have the link?
Where's the link?
You really took the long route Lmaoooo
This looks delicious! I’ll send you Nilla wafers too!
I had some today 😩🤤
Man how does this man not have more views and subscribers!!!! I fuck with you my dude!!!!
✊🏻 Thanks Roberto! 👊🏻
New York??? Anathema! Banana pudding is a southern classic. We spit on you, New York pudding.
You needed that sweetened condensed milk you NEEDED it
Could you do a video and recreate the vanilla wafers - I’d love to make it but no way I’m paying that much for a box of cookies!
You find vanilla wafers to be expensive? They’re are one of the cheapest cookies we can buy in the states! Maybe you’re not in the USA
Obviously I’m not in the USA , I’m in the UK like Jamie and to import American cookies is too expensive
obviously way late to the convo but i prefer banana pudding with shortbread cookies!! so that may be a good alternative for you.
Check out a recipe for vanilla wafers on the Bigger Bolder Baking site.
yeah right
Not using instant pudding makes this better than Magnolias in my book. Those guys are slackers.
HEY! YOU NEED TO STRAIN YOUR CUSTARD BEFORE COOLING!
You can use chessmen cookies
I ' VE ALWAYS MADE MY PUDDINGS FROM SCRATCH SINCE I LEARNED HOW . THE BOX BANANA PUDDING IS SO ARTIFICIAL TASTING !! ESPECIALLY THE INSTANT KIND THAT I HAVE BEEN SERVED - YUCK !!
Remember when he was making magnolia pudding but by minute 6 he's making something else 😂 using a stand mixer to get stiff peaks never ends well
Anyone know where in west coast Canada I could get Nila Wafers?
I am not to sure but I think of you live in Canada you can get them at loblaws.
Also: If you're serving your pudding to guests, either cut the bananas into the pudding right before you serve them or hand them a banana with their portion. This will prolong the life of the pan of pudding and the guests won't be staring at slimy black bananas, oozing in their pudding.
The pudding tastes like bananas because you rest it overnight, the flavor seeps into the cream from the slices
Why am I just now finding you?! First, that face...wow...but..cool recipes, too...
How about making your own Nilla Wafers??????
Good job! I guarantee you ran on a treadmill probably for 2 hours after that.
