  • The great Cuban Rodriguez takes on the terrific middleweight contender Holley Mims. This is arguably the best performance of Rodriguez caught on film, especially considering Rodriguez was a late substitute for Joey Archer.

rodriguez was a really good boxer and excellent body puncher. people talk about Ali and Leonard who were stars that Angelo Dundee trained, but HOF guys like Rodriguez that he also trained are overloooked by the causal boxing fans. he had a remarkable 107-13 record!!!

Even though Mims continues to have his moments, you can feel Rodriguez taking over the fight from the end of the first round onward. He was a brilliant strategist, always thinking of the fight as a whole, never getting lost in the exchanges. And it's pretty amazing how consistently he was able to catch a fighter like Mims clean, even if he was pretty well shopworn at this point.

Connor Ruebusch a brilliant and much underrated era for the middleweights. If only LMR didn't get caught by THAT punch by Benvenuti...he would get his just dues as one of the all-time greats.

He's one of my favorite fighters to watch. I think you can see a lot of the things Ali picked up over time in his game, which makes sense, because they were stablemates. All of the Cuban shit that Ali added to his standard American boxing game--the rhythm, the playfulness, the confidence in defense, the serpentine jab--I believe comes from watching masterful fighters like Rodriguez in the gym. Just a pet theory.

Connor Ruebusch A nice theory. And the funny thing is Rodriguez fought and beat Ali's OLYMPIC stablemate Wilbur McClure ;-)

I'll say it again people believing Dundee couldn't/didn't train watch all his fighters. Distinct styles and rhythyms.

I remember this bout from when I was a kid. Mims had been robbed against Archer, as Dunphy cautiously suggests, and Archer was lucky he didn't go through with the rematch. I was sorry to see Mims draw Luis as a sub--just to fast and smart for an aging warrior. Mims almost got back into the thick of things.

Hey, Flea, I posted this comment elsewhere but I don't think you saw it; I hope you don't mind me re-posting it:
"I'm interested to know if you have more Cervantes fights that aren't
currently on RUclips. I seem to recall that the fights with Frazer have
been posted before but since removed (at least that was the impression I
got); do you have any you can post? I'm particularly interested in
seeing more of him at his best in the early- and mid-seventies. Cheers!"
Thanks if you can get back to me. There's just not enough Kid Pambele to watch!

Flea, you're doing God's work. I put together a playlist of all the (near-)complete Cervantes fights on RUclips as of now: ( ruclips.net/p/PL-fvD9jAmwXchK__2Rc3ScQz6epCKREO4 ). There are only ten of them. As I mentioned, the Frazer fights are strangely absent. I'm not sure if a full version of Locche (I) exists, but that's not here, either.

Do you have Luis' second meeting with Emile Griffith? All their other fights are here; I'd assume it exists somewhere.
