It's amazing what you learn in animation. Ballet shoes getting this treatment to break into them was unexpectedly one of them. That being said, could anyone explain in a little more detail on why the girl was doing those things to the shoe to help break it in? Just genuinely curious.
The shoes come incredibly stiff, and if you don’t break it in before use it can damage your feet. Ballerinas will snap, cut and beat their shoes up against metal and walls to break them in so it doesn’t hurt them. There’s loads of more information on the matter out there. And lots of vids of ballerinas breaking in their pointe shoes. I’m sure those videos will give a much better explanation than I have to offer lol, but I hope this helped!
Some shoes are extremely hard when you first get them, so they need to be properly broken in. Every ballerina breaks in their shoes differently, so the process is never quite the same. For example, the girl in the video uses a knife to score her shoes. This allows for more traction between the floor and the shoe, which can prevent excess sliding while dancing. Using glue to reinforce the shank of the shoe or the box can help the shoe last longer. This is because the shoe can lose its shape from sweat or other wear and tear. Breaking the shank or bending it a lot can make it easier for a dancer to get over the box of the shoe. Again, each dancer has a different way of breaking in their shoes so what is shown in the video isn't necessarily the standard. I personally don't use a lot of extra glue in my pointe shoes, but I usually score them with a knife and bend them. Hopefully this will answer your question :)
I do ballet and I see the pointe girls walk in with their shoes and an entire bag of torture devices for their shoes. I still don't get why the have to do it. I know you gotta break them in when they're fresh out the box but damn
The boxes of the shoes need to be broken enough so it's not painful. If it's to hard, it hurts, if it's to soft, it hurts too because the box of the shoes don't hold your foot anymore.
As someone who doesn't know much about ballet, it was so confusing to see what the character was doing in the beginning, but breaking in pointe shoes really does seem like a difficult process. I love they way it's expressed in the film, though, as a part of the art form itself!
This is amazing, now i know why those shoes are so complicated to wear
Ugh, I HAAAAATED having to do this when I was a dancer. But you had to, or else you'd get blisters and toenails falling off.
glad to hear is for their good

Watch "Louise" if you want to see another Ballet animation. (Its NSFW though)
Ballet dancers don't just "break-in" shoes, they break them.
Woaaaaa this is hella underrated
Ultra Nice
So good!
I do pointe and it looks like Frankenstein was made in my dance bag
At first I thought we were sabatoging someone else's shoes lol
i dont get it why cant they just make flexible shoes if they have to break it to make it comfy?
And then you change them... Weekly 😢
