Okay, from a technical perspective, this makes me jealous. But then again, I went to an engineering program, not one of the top arts schools for animation in the country. The story...the symbolism is clear, but it's tired and over done. The concept of marriage effectively symbolizing some form of bondage and the girl being forced into it, and when she allows her wings to grow she can be free? Maybe using classic Chinese culture (I would say maybe colonial/republic period, from the 1800s-1930s) not the best considering this wasn't unique among the genders. For men often times what class or job you were born to was what you were stuck in for life. In the imperial period, men's only hope of escape was to become eunics and work in for the emperor, and yet the only time you hear about that is in documentaries and only for five seconds. Typical for girls, part of the reason why they went into arranged marriages was because it was a way to be upwardly mobile, and the only way to go from a poorer family to one that could be more affluent. This isn't unique to China ether, but for centuries, women were the only gender in a variety of cultures that could be change or upgrade their status. Now, they would often times be forced on them as we see here often for that reason, but like I said...the sons were often left to fend for themselves. Nice work...but this women need to be free thing is played out.

Tbh I'm afraid to watch these little masterpieces that I see sometimes on youtube because they're always so sad and hopeless but this animation was so sweet, powerful and life-affirming (and beautiful of course) It is still sad (because there are difficult life circumstances etc) but with good ending, that I REALLY appreciate Freedom is the most important thing for a soul

As someone who doesn't know much about ballet, it was so confusing to see what the character was doing in the beginning, but breaking in pointe shoes really does seem like a difficult process. I love they way it's expressed in the film, though, as a part of the art form itself!
