- Subaru Forester Air Filter Replacement First Time Beginner DIY No Judgement Don't Panic Stay Calm
In this video, I change the engine air filter in a 2018 Subaru Forester about 3,000 miles more than the recommended 30,000 mile change interval. Wow, was it dirty! I'm embarrassed to exhibit how dirty I let my 2.5 liter Subaru boxer engine air cleaner element get. This was my first time changing a Subaru air cleaner element. Changing an engine air filter is easy. However, loosening the air intake hose clamp connected to the airbox helped make the job easier. Had I been checking the air filter at every oil change this air filter wouldn't have gotten so filthy...lesson is, take the few extra minutes to regularly check your air filter.
As I said in my earlier video about changing the Subaru Forester cabin air filter, even if you don't consider yourself a DIY person, I think you can change your own car engine air filter. However, I also understand it can be intimidating if you've never done anything under the hood of a car before. Take it slowly and simply look at everything under the hood and try to get to identifying all the parts and components that make up a modern engine. You don't have to know it all but simply look for the basics. Where is the oil dipstick? Where is the radiator or coolant reservoir? Where's the battery? Where is the engine serpentine belt? Where is the airbox as you see in this video? Can you see the oil filter? Where is the windshield washer reservoir? Where is the brake fluid reservoir? Simply looking for all those components every time you open the hood of a car can help you feel more comfortable about opening the hood and feeling less intimidated.
I understand car DIY isn't for everyone but having the ability to look under the hood and identify the major engine components can help you check and verify things at least look like were put back together if you do take your car in for service. Simply take a photo of the engine bay with your phone before you drop off your car or hand over the keys to the service writer. After the work is done and you pick up your car, pop the hood before you leave the repair shop, garage or dealership. Compare the photo to what you observe under the hood. Make sure the mechanic put all the caps back on. In particular, check where the oil cap is on the engine and make sure it's tightly closed just like the lid on a jar. Look at the airbox and make sure the latches are securely latched and the box appears to be properly sealed. Look for any oil or grease spills they didn't clean up.
Learning basic maintenance on your own car not only saves money but you'll enjoy the satisfaction of doing it yourself and learning a little about how your car's systems work! Routinely changing your engine air filter will help increase fuel mileage and engine life. Restricted airflow makes your car's engine work harder and your onboard computer will need to adjust the fuel-air mixture to compensate and it will likely use more fuel depending on other conditions. Be sure to start by checking and reviewing your vehicle's Owner's Manual to see how often you should change your car's engine air filter element and it will likely show exactly how to change it.
I do think the manufacturer's part quality is always the best but their prices are often so much higher but more importantly, you usually have to physically go to a dealer to buy manufacturer replacement parts. That's mainly why I like buying mine online because the convenience and pricing is so much better. You can also find various air filter brands at your local National-chain auto parts retailers, too. Just be sure you get the right size to fit your year, make and model of vehicle.

I just did this in about 5 minutes. No problem. I loosened the hose clamp with my pink-handled screwdriver. I am feeling very accomplished.
Hey, that’s super and good for you for doing it yourself! I need to get a pink-handled screwdriver…tools should be pretty AND functional!! Love it! 😀. Thank you for watching and taking your valuable time to let me know how your task went. Now, you can use the money you saved doing it yourself to reward yourself with a pleasant frosty beverage 🍻🍹. Keep up the good work and I hope you’ll stick around. 👏💪
Just did my cabin air filter on 2020 Forester, w/ your guidance will now attempt air cleaner element after a dusty/buggy drive. Thank you!
Good on you for changing your own cabin air filter! 👏Thank you for watching and stopping by to leave your nice comment. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that all goes smoothly with changing your engine air filter element. Take your time and stop back to let us know how it goes...good luck! 💪
@@WorksIRL Ditto to several of your fans who commented on need to loosen hose clamp and push under. Otherwise, opening was a cinch. I bought my Forester used and they must have replaced at that point; I did as you suggested-- shop vac interior, wipe down and replaced. Buttoning up took some finesse and patience, but as another commented, "isn't it fun to get under the hood again?" Of note: I purchased a WIX from O'Reilly, second most expensive available. Did not look quite as sturdy as the Subaru part installed. Thank you again and I'll be back!
@@HyeLindy Outstanding! So glad it worked out okay and you can take all the credit for a job well done! 👏Thanks for again for watching and stopping back to let us know how it went. I wish you the best of luck with your Forester and hope it provides you many, many miles of safe, economical transportation!
THANK YOU SO MUCH. Ever since I saw that Tim Walz tweet, I’ve been needing to do this, but didn’t know how. Have a 2005 Forester and I’m prepared for the worst. Will let you know with pics.
Thank you for watching and I hope it goes smoothly for you. I'll anxiously await hearing how it goes...good luck!! 💪
I am so annoyed that my girlfriend let Subaru in White Plains replace this filter and her Wiper Blades. They have taken advantage of her. I wanted to do both jobs myself and could have saved her plenty. They send coupons and then take people on easy repairs. Shameful.
I’m curious what they charged her for those routine maintenance tasks…Would you mind sharing here? Those items are bread ‘n butter revenue for dealerships and you’re in plenty of good company as vast majority of automobile owners are now “DIFM” (do it for me)…so much so that acronym is routinely referenced in the automotive maintenance industry as more youngsters replace the older DIY generations as the key target demographic. Just do it for her next time and tell her you have very reasonable prices 🤣. Thanks for watching and commenting! 💪👍👊
Yes, can you show the cabin filter replacement steps? I don't even know where to access it.. TYVM
Hey, I actually have a video doing just that…link below. Thanks for watching and keep us posted how it went after you change it 💪👍

I guess that it is due to the boxer engine that it is a tight squeeze. The filter usually is just a matter of opening clamps and picking up the air filter from a box.
I think you’re right! Also, the intake hose is very rigid…a little more pliable and it might be possible to slip the element out and back in. Thanks for watching and sharing your insights 👍
your video was the first one which i have seen where you: 1. vacuumed out the dirt, 2. used a rag to wipe down the interior, 3. checked carefully to make sure the air filter cover was secure. great job!
I truly appreciate you for not only your observational skills paying attention to mentally note such details but also taking your valuable time to let me know! You clearly appreciate doing things as best as you can so I applaud you 👏 because that trait is not something I take for granted. Thanks for watching and I hope you’ll stick around to let me know when I may have missed something!😎
You are exactly right about what keeps people from doing things themselves. Thanks for showing how to do this!😁
You’re very welcome and let us know if you’ve done it yourself or plan to do it yourself. Thanks for watching and I hope you’ll stick around as I’ll be posting more Subaru maintenance jobs soon. Good luck to you and work safely.
Thank you for saving me money!
Good on you for taking the plunge and doing it yourself!! 💪I appreciate you watching and stopping back to let me know, too! 🙏Happy New Year!!
Just put a k&n air filter in your all set then
I just posted a video about using aFe and Airaid reusable filters on my Jeeps so you're right, now I need to check out K&N and see about adding one to the Forester! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Please do a similar video for the cabin air filter on a 1989 Forester. Or send me the directions.
Check out my video on changing cabin air filter on this 2018 Forester to see if it might be same/similar on your older Forester. Also, I wonder if they even had that in ‘89 as I honestly don’t remember any car having cabin air filters back then…even Cadillacs. Not that Subaru wasn’t ahead of the crowd but cars just weren’t as “sophisticated” back then when it came to things we seem to take for granted now. Let us know if it truly did have a cabin air filter if you do find out! That would show how advanced Subarus have always been compared to the “crowd” 😎.
I don’t own a Subaru, but keep showing people how to maintain their vehicles, brother.
Too many people pay mechanics way too much money for easy stuff.
Thanks, man! I agree…even the simple wiper replacement video has had decent views for my channel and comments from viewers who reported terrible charges from dealers to have it done.
Dealer quote was $78 😂
Holly Toledo! Thanks for sharing what they're charging these days! Did you change yourself...not judging you if you decided to have them do it but just curious.
Very nice video and similar replacement for Impreza as well. It would be very nice if you can make a video for the front disc pad and the rear disc pad replacement for the Subaru Forester 2018 with electronic bake. Thankyou so much. Joseph
Thanks so much for watching and leaving such a nice comment! I actually am overdue on replacing the brake pads on this Forester...at least, they seem very thin when I inspect them (not easy to see down into the calipers) when changing from the all-season tires to the Winter tires. I'm going to try to post more videos this year including that so hope you'll subscribe and stick with us! Thanks again for taking time to watch and comment! Peace, brother!
Hi,
The price for 3 Wipers was $53.46 and Labor for that was $46.54 for a total of $100.
The price on the easy to replace air filter was $51.11 and Labor was $48.84 total $99.95
Not even sure what they used for wipers or possibly inserts. Grand Total of $199.95
Add on NYS Sales Tax and they actually charged additioal $20. for using a CC. I warned her but she didn't want to bother me which would have save her about $150.
Oh Well,
Robert
Holly Toledo!! That IS outrageous!! Even have to hit her with the CC fee 😤🙄! Thanks for sharing…I honestly had no idea they’d charge that much…I agree with you that’s shameful.
I just changed mine about a month ago and thanks to your video, it made me be brave to change it. I have a 2020 Forester Touring.
And I sure love it. Thank you so much for encouraging me to get my hands dirty again.
And like you said it will save you some bucks.
That's really great to hear and good on you for getting the job done on your own! 💪👍. Working on our expensive vehicles definitely can feel intimidating at times and it's a great feeling to know you can do at least a few of the routine maintenance tasks on your own. Again, good job! and thank you for watching and letting me know...I truly appreciate you taking your valuable time to come back and do so. I hope you'll stick around! 🙏
Good tips. Undoing hose clamp worked well. You need to be sure the bottom edge is sealing well. Taking off clamp is only way to be sure it is.
Appreciate hearing that! That air intake hose is so stiff and doesn’t allow much movement so it was the only way I could do it. Nice to hear it’s not just me! Thanks for watching and letting me know your comments!
Thank you for posting this! I will remember it tomorrow when I change the filter in my own Forester.
Thank you so much for watching and letting me know with your nice comment. Good luck and let us know how your air filter change goes!
@@WorksIRL I am happy to report that I changed the air filter in about 5 minutes. Just as you did in the video, I had to loosen the clamp and move the large hose aside in order to replace the air filter. Everything went fine. I'm very glad I changed the filter because from looking at the replacement filter, it was quite necessary. Your video gave me the encouragement that I needed and I'm very grateful to you.
@@robertcochran7103 Good on you for doing it yourself!! Well done! I fully understand that feeling of working on a vehicle can be intimidating, even if it seems like it should be an easy job...so very often, something just doesn't quite go right and can be down-right scary given how much we have invested in our cars. Always work safely and if in doubt, know your limits. You can now feel confident you can do this task and you're saving some money...again, good job and thanks for keeping us posted. I hope you'll stick around. Stay well!
I didnt know Ted Cruz did youtube videos :)
Dang, I thought the facial hair would throw people off! Hey, U.S. Senator $174k/year doesn’t go as far as it used to with this Biden inflation so a guys got to get creative to make ends meet. Thanks for watching, God Bless America and don’t forget to vote! 🤣😂🇺🇸
Thanks for the information. We just bought a 2022 Forester last Fall. I miss the days where the air cleaner housing was held down by 1 wingnut on the top. You could change the filter in less than a minute.
🤣I’m with you brother! Seems like newer should be improved but so many things seem like we’re regressing and going the wrong way 😂. Thanks for watching and taking your time to leave me your nice feedback!
Thank you for this video. I am a 63 year old woman and the dealer I appreciate but the $ they want for simple things like cabin and air filter and even wiper blades is REDICULOUS. I just finished to cabin filter. Bingo no problem. Going to attempt the air filter next thanks to your video! I didn’t know I could loosen that tube thing lol and have been totally afraid to try myself. Gonna give it a whirl. Thank you sir!
That’s great you did your cabin air filter yourself 👏 and I truly appreciate you watching and taking your valuable time to stop back and leave your super-nice comment! You’re in good company with feeling uncertain about so many parts of our vehicles…we spend so much money on them, they’re indispensable in our daily lives and we’re at the mercy of “professionals” we pay to maintain/repair them due to the complicated and often awkward construction of wear-parts requiring routine replacement. Bottom line, they can be intimidating! I still feel that at times, too. Just take your time and be patient. I find it helps to outwardly curse the design engineers when wrestling stiff air tubes or poorly-placed mounting tabs or screws 🤣. I wish you the best of luck on changing your air cleaner and hope it all goes smoothly. Keep us posted! 💪
I basically have that same Forester! It seems like the Subarus, having rather small engine bays yet a Horizontally Opposed Engine, have less room to work in in there. Try changing a battery in an SJ Forester.
This SJ (4th) generation Forester is my first Subaru and its engine bay seems roomier than I expected it to be, though, I suspect I’ll have an entirely different opinion when I change spark plugs coming up soon 😂. Battery appears to be easier than some but again, I haven’t actually changed the battery on it so I’ll keep your comment in mind to allow more time than I may think I’ll need. My 2005 and 2006 Jeep LJs take the prize for roomy as you can almost crawl into some of the engine bay 🤣. 2015 Jeep JK not so much and frankly seems more congested than the Forester. Thanks for watching and commenting! Look forward to having you sticking around and hearing from you some more!
Thank you just followed you video to change out my wife's. The dealer wanted $100+ today. I agree with the tightness, my wife's former Honda Fit had much more space.
Hey, I’m really happy to hear that and thank you for taking time to let me know! Honestly, that’s so shocking how much dealers will try charging for what’s really not all that hard for them who do it all the time. Hope you’ll subscribe as I plan on adding more Subaru maintenance videos as I do them myself. Thanks for watching and stay safe!
Just blame it on the wife.😁🤣
I like how you think! 🤣 thanks for watching and commenting!
u r evil hhhhh
Very clear. Well done. I'm going to try it myself w/ my Subaru
It can feel intimidating but just take your time and the hardest part is simply removing that air intake tube from the air filter box housing...it can take a little muscle and pulling but it'll come off and allows easier removal of the filter element. Keep us posted how it goes and thanks for checking in! Good luck!
Excelente, hoy le cambiaré al mio. Saludos
Gracias por mirar y tomarse el tiempo para dejar un comentario agradable. Buena suerte y espero que te queues.
Whats that air filter in the box called? Mine looks dirty.
I'm not certain what you're asking...If you mean the filter in this video, that's the engine air filter or also maybe called "engine air element". You can buy the Subaru replacement from a Subaru dealership or like me, buy an OEM compatible air filter element made by another company like Purolator. Leave a reply if I'm not answering your question. Thanks for watching!
Taking of the hose was a big help. Thanks for the advice.
I'm really glad that helped you and I appreciate you watching and taking your time to let me know! Hope you'll stick around. Work safely and have a great a weekend!
Nice Video Buddy, appreciate you sharing
Thank YOU for watching and taking your valuable time to leave me a nice comment...I truly appreciate that!
Thank you for the video! Very helpful
You’re very welcome! I’m happy if it helped you. Let us know if you did it yourself how it went. Thanks for watching and taking your valuable time to leave your nice comment! 🙏
How often should we change it?
OEM maintenance chart recommends replacing every 30,000 miles or 30 months. I used a Purolator air filter in this video and the instructions on its box recommends changing every 12,000 miles or 12 months so I'll be changing it based on that recommended interval. Thanks for watching and let us know if you change your air filter what brand you go with.
