    Since the filming of this video, this trailer has been used almost daily on our 8 acre property to haul sand, dirt, gravel, compost, manure, firewood, demolition debris, and more. Everything has held up including the paint. The mast pivot and rear hinges show no wear yet. The heaviest load it can handle is about 6 small FEL bucket loads of pure gravel. Any more and the winch was not strong enough to lift. It can take trailer full loads of lighter material such as mulch, manure, and compost. The winch wire has tanlged a little bit in the spool and that's about it. The theory behind this trailer has proven itself so far. Thanks for watching! Be sure to follow us on Facebook to see daily photos and updates on these projects and what our company has to offer in terms of vintage small engine parts.

    Hello Norman. Good job on the trailer👍. When the mast pivots back to allow the dump mechanism to reach max height without getting in a bind(works great by the way) if you added a inverted 'hook' to mate with the top of the dump box when at max height, this would prevent the box from being able to go too far back and possibly invert in an upside down position. If this were to happen it could be difficult to reposition and might even cause injury.
    Just a thought but overall great job👍👍

    • @Isavetractors
      @Isavetractors  4 года назад +1

      The Cold Cut blade is from Northern Tool. It cuts straighter than the abrasive saw. However I don' use either anymore. I opt for a metal cutting bandsaw, as it cuts much more square than either of the Chop Saws.

    Impressive trailer, but thought I would comment on the hinge. I've taken heavy wall pipe which I could fit a machined shaft (junk yard find) through, and then cut that pipe into shorter sections. With the shaft already within that pipe, I would then weld every other section of the pipe to the frame and then the ones that weren't welded to the frame I would weld to the dump body. That gives you a heavy duty hinge, kind of like what you find on the door to your house. It's a concept that is very easy to build, it aligns itself during construction and will function under incredible loads. Consider this approach the next time you need a heavy duty pivot point, like on this small dump trailer. I'm sure you will like how easy these are to build and how strong they are.

    • @jeromemarlowe4511

      Jeff Bishop Nice idea!

    • @julier1080
      @julier1080 6 лет назад +2

      It also helps to put grease fittings on each section of pipe, eventually that setup can rust if you don’t. I built a trailer like this only larger and able to haul/dump 6k, and used greasable pillow blocks and grade 8 bolts for the pivot points.

    • @bodeine454
      @bodeine454 6 лет назад

      julie r That sounds like the way to go. Did you use 4 pillow blocks, 2 for the frame and 2 for the dump bed with a shaft of some kind through them? I'm curious how you did it, I'm looking to build a dump trailer but something smaller...

    • @julier1080
      @julier1080 6 лет назад

      Jeff, I used 2 pillow blocks mounted to the frame 4’ apart. Then made U shaped brackets that went over the pillow block out of 1/2” steel which were welded to the dump bed. Then drilled the steel brackets to match the pillow blocks (3/4”). Then 3/4” grade 8 bolts 3” long and washers between the steel and pillow blocks, as well as between the bolt heads and nuts and steel.

    • @kennethkobie9645

    Didnt you have room enough for a electric winch in the center so you dont need the tall lift in front. That looks great

    • @Isavetractors
      @Isavetractors  5 лет назад

      Next year I'm going to build another one of these with a scissor style lift and a winch to pull it. That will get rid of the tall mast

  • @owenprince4823
    @owenprince4823 5 лет назад

    If your pivot point was in the middle you would only have to lift 1/2 the load. The way you have it pivot at the back your winch must lift all the load so will limit the lift and extra wear on the winch.

    • @garysmith5483
      @garysmith5483 5 лет назад

      if the pivot was in the middle then the back of the bed would hit the ground, also if enough weight was behind the pivot it could flip the bed up throwing slack in the cable.. not a good thing.

Trailer turned out great good job. I plan on pulling mine with my 6x4 John Deere gator. How's the 20 gauge holding up? I'm considering using same material but I haul a lot of firewood and odd material on the farm and just curious if it will be strong enough not to dent. Again great job!

    • @Isavetractors
      @Isavetractors  8 лет назад

      Thanks for your comment. The 20 gauge is holding up great. I have hauled bricks, manure, and gravel with it and it's been holding up great. No dents yet. There is another video on youtube that showed a guy making a scissor styled lift using a winch. If I had to do this again, I would use that idea and get rid of the mast. It seems like it's about 1" long (or is that simple the angle of the camera view). When I weld, I have to have the contact tip about 1/4" from the welding surface. What am I don't different or wrong? Or are you using what I've heard called "spray transfer"?

      @bareavis 7 лет назад

      My little experience with flux core wire is you need a bit more stick-out than if you MIG weld.

    • @danburch9989
      @danburch9989 7 лет назад

      Thanks for the info. You're the first person to say that stick-out is different between weld types. I'll give it a try. I hope that helps with my porosity. Once it a while, I get a real good looking weld. But many times, they are ugly. I don't think my travel speed is too fast (but maybe it still is).

    Esta bueno amigacho, pero si me iba a tomar el trabajo de hacerlo, lo hacia playo con las cuatro bandas volcables. Y me ahorraba una bateria dejando dos cables largos listos para conectar a la bateria del vehiculo q lo iba a arrastrar. Saludos

    Nice built but some comments, ...1/ please tidy up your electrics. the neg of the winch is probably chassis neg. this means the exposed thermal breaker you've wisely added coul easily end up touching the chassis and cause a short...if it's the battery side then you'll have an explosion on your hands..... 2/ You don't need a deep cycle battery for this application, a regular starter battery will be just fine so long as it is kept charged.....3/ as the winch has a capacity much greater than 5ft why not add a pulley to the system, if moving heavy loads the the tip will be half speed but twice the lift capacity.

    • @Isavetractors
      @Isavetractors  7 лет назад +6

      Thanks for your comment. The winch is not ground through the chassis but through it's own wire. A deep cycle is actually what is needed as a regular starter battery is not designed to be drained and charged over and over. The only way for me to use a regular battery is if I had it hooked up to a direct charge from the pulling vehicle. I did consider adding a mechanical advantage to the pulley but speed is more important to me since it is mostly used on manure, compost, and other lighter materials. When I load it with about 3/4 full of gravel it works fine as well.

      I'd use a heavier winch for the job,less problems.

    My only complaint (although you did an excellent job) is the rattle can paint job. Why would you do all that fab work and not paint it correctly? Harbor Freight has some inexpensive HVLP guns that would do the job 1000% better than rattle can . . .

    • @Isavetractors
      @Isavetractors  7 лет назад +2

      I have been demonstrating these methods for our main DIY customer base. In addition to a HVLP Gun you need a big air compressor which is beyond what most of our customers have. Rattle Can Paint Jobs when done properly look great as well. Stick around, we will be doing paint jobs with paint guns too in the near future. All of my tractors are working tractors too, so even with hardener and pro mixed paint, they are going to get beat up. We are planning a show tractor series in the future, where we will cover the finer details for those looking for that.

      My suggestion, look into the California Air Tools compressor sold online at Home Depot. Well worth the money and they preform well and they are SUPER quite. I've painted several Jeeps using their compressor which I think I paid $329 for a few years ago.

    Great trailer. I like the idea of the mast being able to pivot. Just wondering if it tends to move around and shake when traveling. If so, what's your fix?

    • @Isavetractors
      @Isavetractors  5 лет назад +1

      It doesn't move around. When I lower the trailer I keep some tension on the line, and that friction keeps it from shaking around.

    Very concerned with the winch cable. Under load if you lost a shackle, hook, or cable splice the kinetic recoil up and over the mast would be bad. Most dangerous is the fact the your controls and the winch operator are then inline with a runaway cable, and hopefully no one is on the vehicle towing the dump trailer. Other than that great ingenuity and idea.
