One thing that you should mention is whether the Grease Gun was made for $20 1940's dollars or 20 of today's dollars because there's a difference. If It's 1944 dollars, then that amounts to $356 today, while still cheap, it's not the same thing as $20 today. And $20 back in 1944 was a decent amount of money considering that a loaf of bread is said to have cost anywhere from $.15 - $.17, that's cents. And a 1 bedroom apartment would cost anywhere from $20 - $20 a month,. So taken in context, an M3 wasn't that cheap, but definitely cheaper than anything else being fielded by the US at the time.
Another thing of note, the M3's stamped construction wasn't something unique to the M3, just unique for a US made weapon of the time. The Germans were already fielding stamped steel weapons in the form the MP38 & 40. I believe that the MG-42 utilized some stamped parts and the STG-44 was made from stamped steel as well.
Lastly, one thing that's worth mentioning is that the M3 stayed in the US inventory for a long, long time. It was still in use as a backup weapon for armored vehicle crews during Deset Storm. So its legacy endured to well after the end of WWII.

The M3/M3a1 was a basic issue item (BII) for US armored fighting vehicles. I familizared with the M3/M3a1 annually as a member of a M-551, M-60a1, and M-48 tank crew. Rugged, simplistic, slow rate of fire and easily used.
