Palm is a band you have to see live. They’re fully reliant upon each other to churn through the complex, intricate arrangements they create. Each member of the quartet plays inventive, intricate phrases that barely interact with one another, creating the illusion that each song is improvised. The stringent licks, off-kilter time signatures and gnarled tones appear to be borne out of the energy contained within the spontaneous moment you happen to catch them playing. Palm’s material is structured like a mathematical proof; individual problems stack on one another, spiraling toward a resolution which is revealed once the song ceases entirely. It started out sounding like random assorted noise and over time my brain made the connections and it started sounding really good.
for those who say that this is disorganized, the rhythms are wrong or are random, the voices are wrong, need to know that is not so, every sound is planned to check that can listen to the album "trading basics" with all songs in, and played in a very similar way, (only here put more juice!) is only this band does not use resources / licks that most bands use, they explore other resources, elements, so it is well, at least creative, and one of my favorite bands.

Been following these guys since their first ep. This is a very special band.
Watched this live when it was initially streaming. I've been anxiously anticipating this upload ever since :D
We've got plenty of months left, but this live session is my current pick for favorite release of 2016. So much to break down that I don't even know where to begin. Still listening to this all the time weeks later. Thanks to Palm for this awesome batch of songs. Can't wait for the next.

you think this is a badna of math rock? why do you say that? I think it is not, the melodies and chords are not on the commonplaces of math style Math rock / pop rock as This Town Needs Guns, chon or covet, (perhaps it is more like bands like Tera Melos or Don Caballero) yet so would not call Palm one band Math rock, maybe Rock experimental, progressive. Is important to say at least that the guitars do not touch virtuous riffs, or perform any difficult procedure, except for changes in the metric / meter structure, that's all that will allow me to say that has a bit of math rock, harmony and counterpoint is super-creative, and timbre from these search is very interesting, this band has a lot to give.
Changes to the meter and structure is what makes math rock for me, so sure, but it's a very wide term.
this most certainly can be called math rock, but prefer to call it art rock because it is more avant-garde.

It blows me away that they're self taught. I thought for sure they had gone to music school. They're so complex and play such precisely crazy time signatures. Beautiful sounds. I'd love to see them open for Tame Impala.
EJ's Home for Wayward Music they did go to music school, they might have majored in it. But they went to bard in upstate NY, which is an arts and music school. They got exposed to it all.

Sounds like chorus and a very slight amount of phaser. For similar vocals check out This Heat.
Jacob saw this band last night, the vocals go through doublers and last night the guitars had midi pickups in them. Very interesting show
TC Helicon Vocal Processor, he always uses a midi pickup with a Roland guitar synth pedal for untitled.

Yo Audiotree/Palm, just wondering what effects (if any) were used on the vocal recordings in this session? They sound really full/almost as if they're double tracked or something? Did Palm maybe use vocal pedals or something? Thanks :)
Tim Andersson they run their vocals through some sort of chorus/heavy modulation effect. not sure exactly the brand but its definitely a chorus of some sort

I can't stop listening, once you get in tune with their melody's it becomes quite enjoyable, I don't like the phaser on the vocals though. the guitar tone on "untitled" is very unique, it sounds like they're playing chords really high on the fretboard and then pitch shifting down. Really interesting band.

Gretchen, Telstar Drugs, Omni, Freak Heat Waves, Each Other, and The Hecks all sound a bit like Women in some way. There's more but they're not as good IMO

I found it humerous that this is like the textbook definition of experimental math rock, and yet these guys claim they never consider themselves "math". I respect their humble response though.
Tommy Scott eh, if they don't consider themselves to be math rock it would make sense for them to want to distance themselves from that label. especially with all of these comparisons to Women that everyone seems to make
If you like this band, check out Bat House on Audiotree Live. They have a similar math-rock sound but are more groovy and structured in my opinion!

might be two years late, but you should check out Ought, its one of my favoritd bands. a friend recommended me women and palm based on them

Sorbmal Music chorus/some sort of modulation but its most likely chorus
It's a TC Helicon vocal processor, with a setting that has a name similar to "rich" or "full" but turned all the way wet. So no original signal.
But it's a chorus and flange combo, with some phasing added.
