Some pictures are better horizontal, some better vertical. But you should choose what you want because of the composition, not because you are to lazy to turn your phone.
Indeed. The first photo (car) is too warm, the area around the wheels is underexposed and the car color is too washed out and different from the actual car color. The second photo (engine) has way too much under- and overexposure and it's complete junk. The last photo (speed meter) is also a little underexposed and lacks color.
YES, THIS!!!! i know you read the comments Donut Media! show how vehicle factories went from making cars to making tanks and engines for airplanes, lots of info here, im sure you'll be able to get past the 10min mark on this one.
As a photographer, I've literally never thought of holding lens filters over my cell phone camera before. But then again, these days you can get lenses and filters for your phone, same as your DSLR.
More tips for selling: 1 include as many photos as you can and please use landscape 2 If you like make the first photo seen a front corner shot with the wheels turned towards the opposite corner like its on the cover of a magazine 3 Taking pictures in your yard, nicer area or in my case the gravel near the field across the street looks a lot nicer than the am/pm parking lot 4 NO snapchat or instagram photos, captions and filters are usually a dead giveaway you are young and stereo typically do not have $ for maintenance 5 If you use filters make is a subtle one and use it on all photos to bring back color if the photos look dead 6 Show as much of the car as possible, all body panels, 1 or 2 interior, 1 good landscape engine bay pic showing the whole bay 7 your goal to an extent is to show as much of the car in the ad as possible, an ad with good pictures and enough simple detail will keep expectations even with the car. 8 Get that car as clean as possible, nobody likes somebody elses mess. Wash, vacuum and at least wipe the engine bay with a rag (dont hose it, ends bad) 9 Be sure to include all necessary information, year, make, model, engine style v6,v8 etc. , engine displacement, rwd, fwd, awd, 4wd, mileage, general options like a/c or p/s if not all of the cars had it like miatas. 10 Remember you are trying to sell the car so you need to be honest, but the buyer also needs to make the call themselves on what is wrong with the car. If the steering wheel isn't dead straight but it doesn't pull it is not worth mentioning IMO. Remember lots of pictures and to the point Keep-It-Simple-Stupid
I love the saying keep it simple stupid because you can use it for so many things trying to learn to drive instead of trying to bash through gears like your Colin McRae keep it simple go slow learn where the gears are and how it feels to change gear you want to take nice photos for Instagram dont start on some really complex shots where you are photographing moving cars while sat still keep it simple take a picture with something else in the foreground or with a nice view in the background like in this video
Agree, just like his "crap" versus "cool" photo of his Mustang, the first one really showed the car a lot better, while the one at the end was much more "artful" but you couldn't see anything about the actual car. It all depends on the objective.
@@quillmaurer6563 for a selling picture, I would go with most manufacturers way : high contrast, cool reflection, putting the colour in the spotlight...

same, I hate filters, they just make everything so fake. and I personally like the before photo in this video better. you can see the coast better and the colors look very natural and rich. also there's no photo I hate more than black and white ones (unless they are actual, historical, old school black and white photos). what do people have against color these days?
James: always says litlary every big name in Car Culture is his friend, but no one of them ever showed up at his show Nolan: says nothing about his friends in his videos and then Larry Chen shows up 😂
Really cool video idea! I've been shooting cars for about two years now, and I've only got two things to say. 1, Lightroom will completely change the way your photography. It's fun, intuitive, and really really capable, and it's free! And 2, practice. The more you practice, the better you will get, and the more creative you'll get!
Actually, the 2x zoom on newer phones is actually a 2x OPTICAL zoom. Not digital. It's a whole other lens. And it actually has a good effect on photos. But, like Larry said, dont be lazy and adjust composition with zoom. Walk forward or back. Either on 1x or 2x.
One more tip. Consider tour timing. You can make your photos look much nicer by taking them in evening, or early morning. This makes the colours warmer and often much more interesting. Also the lighting is generally milder at this time, so it can reduce highlights and make shades softer. This enables you even to make photos with the sun in the shoot without having a lot of trouble with contrast. And this trick us very easy to implement.
Driving to scenic locations in the early morning when the lighting is good to take cool pics is probably my favorite thing to do in the car hobby. Even ripping through downtown early in the morning is fun. Ripping up a mountain road to an overlook early AM is heaven on earth.
Ten more tips: 1. Sometimes leaving the natural color of the photo alone is better. Stylistic color is fun for posting online but it doesn't necessarily "improve" the shot. However, /always/ check to see if adjusting your highlights/whites and shadows/blacks can improve the photo. 2. You CAN shoot with the main light source somewhere behind your car! A lot of professional photographers and cinematographers even prefer this technique. Just make sure there's enough ambient light that your car doesn't look too dark. 3. A perfect time to try "light behind the car" is during sunset or in the hour before it, AKA "magic hour". The sun's low angle will cast long shadows and a warm beautiful look on your car. Think about how many pro car shots have that golden sunset look. 4. Learn what The Rule Of Thirds is! It takes less than a minute and a quick Google search to learn, and it will give you a basic idea of how to get good composition easily in your photos. 5. While you're on Google becoming an expert in just a few minutes, look up Leading Lines! Leading lines add depth and draw attention to the subject/car. 6. The glass filter used in front of the iPhone lens here is called a circular polarizer. Rotating the filter allows you to get rid of various unwanted reflections on your car or make the sky appear more blue. Just get one! You will have a lot of fun and you'll get better photos. 7. As shown here, your background is important. Ideally, place your car in a location that might already be worth taking a photo of on it's own as a landscape or aesthetic shot. Try to take an appealing photo of both the background AND your car /at the same time/. 8. They also sort of show this in the video, but never underestimate the power of turning the face of your front wheels towards the camera, whether the shot is from the front or the rear. You don't need it in every shot, but it's a lot like posing your car for the camera. 9. Got Photoshop? Cool. It's actually very easy to edit a still image of your car to have motion blur on just the wheels and background (not the body of the car itself) as if the photo was taken at high speeds. Tutorials are everywhere! The key is to take a dramatic low angle shot of your car (driver not visible) in a place where it COULD be zooming along. This will stand out, because people don't tend to have an "action shot" of their car. 10. This last one should be obvious but... if you're actually taking your car somewhere for pictures, please wash it first! A dirty car looks cheaper than it ought to in photos. "Eh, looks good enough" is not good enough.
I am an amateur photographer and I started with a 5th gen iPod with a cracked screen and just tweaking made them awesome! Now I have some professional equipment!
For me, the best way to learn stuff like that is to look at the stuff I like and then analyse it, why I like it, why it works, where's the subject, what's in the background, where's the horizon, how are the colours, where your eyes are drawn to the most when looking at that picture. It takes a bit of practice, but it's rather easy once you get a hang of it. From this video I LOVE the advice to use your legs instead of zooming in. It's so simple, yet a lot of people don't get it.

Other apps which are worth checking out are Lens Distortions, Pro Cam, SCRL, Unfold & Swipeable. Also shooting through stuff to add depth of field is easy and looks pro too. (such as bushes, fences, leaves.)
Actually zooming isn't bad if your phone has more than a single camera and one of them is a telephoto or more For example when they used the iphone in the vid it only had one lens and for zooming it just zoomed on the screen and not the camera itself so basically they lost a lot of resolution On a phone like the galaxy S10 you have a wide-angle and the telephoto, where the x2 is loss-free The P30 pro has a lot of zoom capability (up to 50x) but not exactly without loss but good enough
"zoom by walking" is the most snob cliche thing you can ever do. Do it if you have no choice but if your phone has the ability to change the focal length use it. If you get closer to the car with the default wide angle lens you'll just distort the scene
I photograph cars for a dealership for work and I'm telling you, a DSLR or even a point-and-shoot will give you much better car photos than a smartphone. The biggest thing for me is the adjustable focal length. With real cameras you can stand further back and zoom in optically (not digitally, so there's no loss in quality). This allows you to get more car in your photo while having the vehicle look proportionally correct (ie. the grille and headlights don't look huge compared to the back of the car). Also yes, a cloudy/overcast setting is best for lighting.
Nice to see this, it’s what I’ve been doing since 2014. I love when people assume I have a expensive gear. My first viral photo was picked up by Nissan, shot with an IPhone 4

Very good video in the times when we all some time or the other post pics of our car for sale or even buy one. Though I would rather like the original pics of a car over a well taken or even edited one This shows the condition of the car realistically Saves a lot of time.

Also yes, a cloudy/overcast setting is best for lighting.
great, now I can take a good pic of my Aventador...in forza.
I can help you with forza photography if you want, message me on Instagram @waffles_x_traef

Nice to see this, it’s what I’ve been doing since 2014. I love when people assume I have a expensive gear.
My first viral photo was picked up by Nissan, shot with an IPhone 4

You're talking to a dude that has 500 followers only follows 150 of them back and never posts anything.

I feel Donut Media X Hoonigan is getting closer and closer
I have my camera "tuned" for landscape because it helps with the car details in the sun. Also, use light exposure settings for mega sunny locations. Awsome Video Dounut!
Awesome vid nolan and my 2 favorite automotive lifestyle brands workn 2gether FINALLY!!!! Donut/ Hoonigan greatest team ever...could easily take over all forms of media on the web!!!!# powercouplelol...⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡now we just need James and Hert to put something together...#brothersfromothermothers.
These are useful tips. I take a lot of photos of the scale model cars I make and I've recently started putting them on Instagram. Thanks!
As a person with a photography hobby, this is a pretty accurate video. Pretty basic, but this is like most of what I do with most of my photos, and for photos like that this is more than enough touching up. If you're willing to go more advanced, you should definitely shoot in RAW if your device supports it.
I enjoyed see how yall showed how to get good pic with your phone. As of now I dont have a car I would what to take pic of but. I do a lot of woodworking and will be using the tips and trying to apply them to those photos. Thx
THIS HAS TO BE A SERIES!!!
Been thinking about making an Instagram page for my next car and this video really helped! Thanks Donut!
I'm definitely coming back to this vid once I decide to take pics of my jetta👌🏽
This reminds me of how shiny cars used to be in the earlier gran turismo games. It definitely made them look nicer.
Ah, Nolan and Nolan 2. Great video Nolans!
I could litset to Larry talk about his craft all day
Very good video in the times when we all some time or the other post pics of our car for sale or even buy one.
Though I would rather like the original pics of a car over a well taken or even edited one
This shows the condition of the car realistically
Saves a lot of time.
Holy crap that John Cirone legit looks a lil like Nolan.. esp. when theyre both sitting at the table. lmaoo
