My personal experience: Taking atorvastatin for a year and a very active 74 year old cyclist (5500 mi/year). I experienced quite severe muscle pain and longer than usual recovery after long, hard rides before my cardiologist recommended CoQ10 (200 mg). Afterwards, I feel much better and my recovery nights are basically pain free. Not quite scientific, but works for me. Just say’n.

Hi Dr. Bailey, you're the best. I had a triple bypass about a year ago and the muscle pain from the 80mg/day Astovastatin was seriously affecting my quality of life. My Doctor reduced the RX to 40mg/day and it helped, but not enough. I wanted to stop the stations, but the Doctor said no. One day I found the CoQ10 info and started a regiment of 200mg/day for a week and then 100mg/day since. After only one week my muscle pain completely went away. This is not a coincidence, I battled the statin muscle pain for almost an entire year, this is truly cause and effect. Love your RUclips video content, keep it going. 👍

    Dear @Dr. Sam Bailey
Thank you very much for your talk on CoQ10 and Statins. Statins are a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, this enzyme is part of the mevalonate pathway and by inhibiting this enzyme, both cholesterol and also the production of Ubiquinon is inhibited, this leads to a reduction in CoQ10. Hence when someone does take a statin there is also a corresponding reduction in the levels of CoQ10.
If you look at the mevalonate pathway it is interesting to see that the inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase causes also the inhibition of Farnesyl PP, from Farnesyl PP it branches off to form either cholesterol, Heme A, Ubiquinon these are required for the electron chain to work effectively to generate ATP - hence when someone is on statins they can feel fatigued - as well as and Prenylated Proteins.
So, following on - if the electron chain is not functioning properly there can be a decrease in aerobic metabolism which can result in the cytoplasmic reduction and shunting of pyruvate to lactate, which is required to replenish NAD+ that is required to generate ATP - see Krebs Cycle.
CoQ10 has many roles within the body, these roles include helping to reduce reactive oxidative stress through its antioxidant effects and participation in mitochondrial respiration. So - by preventing mitochondrial dysfunction CoQ10 can help to reduce statin induced myopathy by helping to replenish the electron transfer chain to help generate ATP.
    Thanks
    Kevin

I started taking COQ10 probably sometime after my triple bypass in 2001 at the age of 40. I learned about adding this supplement from reading Dr Stephen Sinatra's book: "Reversing Heart Disease Now." I take 300mg of COQ10 twice a day (for several years). (Before discovering the 300 mg Kirkland brand at Costco, I was taking 200mg twice a day for many years. I don't remember why I'm taking COQ10 twice a day. Perhaps, it was from Dr Sinatra's book.) I have not noticed any particular side effects from COQ10. My blood tests have not shown any particular effects on my liver enzymes. (My only other major supplement is vitamin C 2000mg twice a day also for many years.Yes, I am taking daily blood pressure and cholesterol medication.)

Knowing myself well I was able to figure that the fatigue had nothing to do with anything other than the start of taking a Statin. I gave it a few months and was about to change to yet another Statin hoping for better results. It was my pharmacist who listened to me and recommended I take CoQ10 with my Statin every day. It as certainly contributed to bringing by blood pressure under control. I am prescibed 20mg of Atorvastatin and have had no side effects at all whilst also being on Q10. Great info! After my H.A. at 54, I was taking “blood thinners”, Atorvastatin/Lipitor for 2 years, then I switched to Warfarin for another 2 years, my liver and cramps in my legs got so bad, that I quit taking this “stuff”, and I was active in various sports.
Since quitting statins, I started taking Q10 for almost 15 years, also taking Red Yeast Rice supplement, and a lot of other basic vitamins. My cholesterol and triglycerides are fine now, with good nutrition diet combined.

I had been on Atorvastatin since 2010. I was unaware of needing the supplement of CoQ10, when taking the lowering cholesterol drug. Thanks to video such as yours, I stumble upon important information, such as this. One MUST be proactive in their health areas. I was shocked because either of my primary physicians, didn't advise me to take CoQ10, knowing that the statins were lowering it! Once, I had severe leg cramps all the way to my hips; like being paralyzed with extreme pain and couldn't move! . I was thinking about calling the ambulance for a trip to the hospital. My sister prayed for me, I asked for some mustard and after a few minutes the extreme pain subsided. I asked my doctor to what may have cause the problem? Her reply was that she didn't know. Again, thanks for your informative video, which have helped a lot of people. Keep up the good work. I am a subscriber too :) May 23, 2021 Sunday

Dr. Sam, I love your information and your presentation. One concern I have, not about you or the presentation, is that many physicians with whom I have worked either are not familiar with supplements or are resistant to recommending their use. I muddle along doing as much research as I can on the best supplements for me, but feel discouraged that I cannot find professional medical support. P.S. I live in the US. Could that be part of the problem?

But MOST doctors know NOTHING about supplements, feel threatened when they are asked, cannot answer our questions and usually end up telling us NOT to take them (because they'd rather put us on DRUGS). *Oops! I meant to add that a discussion on leg cramps would be helpful. I do know there are 'go-to' treatments for this, such as potassium, neurontin, etc.~ yet, I know of a few people- myself included- that have had little to no relief from the usual treatments/suggestions.
For myself, it's not the standard, charley-horse in the calf type cramp. I will get severe, debilitating cramps down the side of my shin bone, sides of my thigh, (feels deep in, next to bone?), tops of my feet or balls of feet. Straightening out does nothing. Ice packs are the only relief so far. I'm starting to wonder if it's more of a tendon or nerve issue, rather than actual muscle cramps? Pain level is off the chart/cannot speak/panic type of pain, when they do come. My husband runs for the ice pack, & they subside within 15-30 minutes- usually. Sometimes up to an hour. Literally feels like tying up in knots- sometimes visual.

SI injections, Neurontin or Lyrica plus I have a intrathecal pain pump, my wife tried Humira/Enbrel. Flare ups, sometimes if you feel like doing something then the next day you pay for it. Answer??? Eric Clapton was vaccinated with the Asra Zeneca and has developed burning in his hands /feet it’s a battle just to deal with it! Nerves are inflamed that’s what I get from my doctors. Hope you can find relief 🙏🏻🙏🏻
