Black Peter is the Hunter song I always took the most from philosophically. I never considered it a “downer”. Death is part of life. The key line is “See here how everything, lead up to this day , and it’s just like every other day that’s ever been.” That’s timelessness, that says it all for me.
"Black Peter"... I remember when I first really sat down and LISTENED TO this song, I was processing the recent surprise suicide death of a high school classmate of mine named Peter. As the lyrics unfolded, I was absolutely floored, as you can imagine... But I never could understand the line "Annie Beauneu from Saint Angel": I've always misheard it as "Anyone know, from sin and gin". Anyone else? LOL!
I remember driving from Glenwood Springs, CO to the Alladin Theater in Vegas SOLELY to get a Black Pete. Got miracled on 6th seats and man oh man, watching Bob and Jerry leaning into the lights with the heart-felt "and it's just like any other day that's ever been". My Lord. Chills even today. One of Hunter's best tuns.
Aw, I lived in Glenwood Springs for a year, worked at a Title Insurance company there. Land Title Guarantee, maybe. But a town of 6,000 people was just too small for me. And Aspen, 35 miles away, was not my scene. 2005-ish.
I can't believe working man's dead is 50 years old but that said we're talking masterpiece yes this is a masterpiece but of course American beauty is pretty masterful

I don't understand how someone who professes to be responsible with LSD would proceed to dose a whole punch bowl how do you know what your dose is if you're just drinking out of a punch bowl sounds like a dicey way to move on up
@@OFR Wow interesting. i (kind of accidentally) ingested around 1800-2400ug of pure love once with absolutely zero tolerance. i was essentially paralyzed & drooling & outside of time for about 4 hours until i could feel my body again, and then was just really high for the next number of hours-- but quite comfortable! visuals so powerful i could literally see the air. i paused this podcast to ponder the perfection and poignancy of Hunter's quote, "someone who's crawled naked across the sahara doesn't spend much time in tanning parlors."
@@AK-om5ew I have two friends who did INSANE amounts of LSD in the 70s; when they were teens they commonly took 10-15 tabs at a time. I've heard of Jim Morrison doing the same. They tell me it doesn't take them much farther/deeper at some point, from their perception. I will let their experience be what it was!
Is it true the song Black Peter is about a climber who up on Mount Everest went to pee during a blizzard and was found months later with a way discolored Peter in his hand, dead?
After 30 years i still get goosebumps hearing this song.
Love, love this. I'm new to the pod, but this is perhaps my favorite episode so far. So good!
