  • Classic Game Room reviews DUKE NUKEM 3D for Sega Saturn. The hilarious, iconic first person shooter from 3D realms originally released in 1996 found its way onto the Sega Saturn shortly thereafter. Sluggish gameplay with lag and delay basically ruins what is otherwise an awesome first person shooter. While Duke Nukem 3D is playable on the Sega Saturn and a truly awesome videogame, there are better versions of Duke Nukem 3D out there (PC and Xbox 360). This CGR review of Duke Nukem 3D has gameplay from Duke Nukem 3D showing game play on Sega Saturn.

    Duke Nukem 3D on the Sega Saturn was THE best version on a console system. It also added colored lighting which was not possible on the PC version. Mark mentions Quake as well, a game John Carmack said could not run on the Saturn, yet it was ported, played smoothly, and had colored lighting as well - something the PC version lacked.

    • @OpenMawProductions

      No, it really wasn't the best. In terms of performance, maybe. But in terms of content? Truncated levels,. Cut levels. Lacking a lot of environemntal props. No rotating sectors (meaning no rotating doors). Strange texture scaling in places. Some of the weapons are off from the PC counterpart in terms of fire rate. Only a handful of music tracks because they had to use CD audio for some of Duke's longer lines to make them sound decent.
      All that for the trade off of colored lighting. Yeah. Duke had colored lighting, in the former of colored sectors. It was enough.
      As to Quake, it wasn't really ported. They used Slavedriver and painted a Quake skin over it. Again, cut down levels, cut contente, enemies have a really slow pace, the weawpons are sprites instead of models. The frame-rate is all over... But yeah, colored lighting. Something GLQuake DID have.

    While I generally love Lord Karnages reviews of Saturn games this one is the most odd. The Sega Saturn version is hands down the best console port of that time. It ran amazing, lighting effects were cool, it was uncut and it had the first online FPS multiplayer. Oh and it also had DeathTank mini game... A game that honestly could have been sold separate. My only beef ever with the Sat version was that duke was slightly shorter feeling in the game. The PSX version had a cool extra episode but the frame rate was so bad it really let me down. The N64 version is nice and features multiplayer in house but it lacked all of the soul of Duke himself. This version, Powerslave and Quake are the reason Lobotomy Software are real gods of programming for putting 3 amazing FPS on the Saturn, a system that no one thought could pull it off. Quake and Duke in particular showed with the right skilled programmers, near the end of the systems life, that the Saturn was capable of some great games.

      +Okami™ I wouldnt go that far (saying Saturn is the best FPS system). Of that era PSX and N64 had far more FPS games. Saturn only really had 7-8 . But as far as best versions of Duke and Powerslave, all Saturn. Quake, while the N64s version was probably a bit more polished, the programming achievement that was the Saturn version to me is so much more impressive. As far as DOOM, it should have been the easiest game to make run perfect on Saturn of all of the FPS. It wasnt Dooms fault and it wasnt the Saturns fault. It was the shity Rage soft team being bad at their job releasing a half assed port.

    • @xDerekRx
      @xDerekRx 8 лет назад +1

      Completely agree there. Lobotomy knew how to do it right. Doom Saturn also had the bigger sprites. Sega actually considered Rage software first to do the Duke/Quake conversions so we dodged a huge bullet there.

      +Dinomite Derek No PSX was the best yes Saturn had the better graphics and even had actualy 3D when you would look up but it was nowhere near as good as the PSX version yes the PSX version had bad frames but it had a faster and better gameplay too me and it was also close to the Original Duke3D on pc AND not to mention PSX had the amazing and Exclusive Episode Plug N Pray :)

      +refluX1kreborn Well you are allowed your opinion. Im a hugeee Duke fan. I played all 3 of the versions like I said in my post above. I was super excited for Metldown because of the new episode. I got it day 1. New levels were a big deal for me. But the game just plays so poorly. The frame rate of the PSX version is such a letdown. If it just played better it would certainly be the best version. It also lacks any type of dynamic lighting. The Saturn version simply plays smooth. Its easier to sit down and run through it. I still play all 3 versions to this day but the Saturn one is the best for gameplay. Some people might not like the Powerslave engine controls but once u get used to them they are a dream. Having played the Saturn version first then the PSX one I couldnt believe the step down in performance. PSX version was more complete and obviously the new episode was a great idea. But to me performance means so much more. Lobotomy were a great company I wish they kept making games on all systems.

    • @xDerekRx
      @xDerekRx 8 лет назад +1

      +refluX1kreborn Ya I get what you said but I dont agree at all. I think the controls are perfectly fine. It would have been nice to be able to customize like I believe you can in Saturn Quake but everything is just fine. Its not ideal but I played it last week and had no problem switching weapons and the like.

    This is arguably the best version of that generation. I understand how the PC and 360 versions are better, but should we really be comparing a Saturn game to these other platforms?

    • @KageMaru10g
      @KageMaru10g 9 лет назад +5

      ***** I already explained how I don't think it's fair to compare the PC to the Saturn, but how is the PSX way better? The frame rate is worse, the Saturn version has additional lighting effects not found in the PSX version, colors look better on the Saturn, and the Saturn version supported online play. I also don't get how it matters what engine these games ran on, it's the results that should matter when we're comparing the results.
      You either didn't play each version like I did or aren't remembering correctly.

      While it was many years ago, I did remember this being a solid port of Duke that was worth playing for a number of reasons. Playing Total Meltdown more recently, was much worse than what I remember of Saturn version.

    The pc version is the best out there.
    But to bash the saturn this without mention the ps1 and n64 is very unprofessional.
    Its true that this game works better with a keyboard and mouse.
    However it isnt true that the saturn duke was horrible compared to the ps1 and n64 ports.
    I own all versions of duke exept the gameboy advance one (cant say its comparable anyway) and i recomend getting the saturn version over both ps1 and n64.
    Mainly because the n64 while having better framerate lacks any kind of music during actual gameplay.
    And the ps1 version has worse framerate than the saturn.
    Also in the saturn ports defence it has dynamic lightning effects from explosions and gunfire etc.
    Also runs on a fully 3D engine.
    And yes the xbla is a pretty good version in terms of replicating the original pc game.
    But if you wanna get a modern version i recommend the pc with the eDuke32 source port.

    I have a saturn and although I don't have one yet, I want at least one Netlink Compatable game. Is this the cheapest, or am I better off getting another of the six?

    • @xDerekRx
      @xDerekRx 9 лет назад +1

      +RRW There are 5 Compatible games for Netlink in NA. As of this writing Bomberman is around $200, Duke 3D is $30-35. The Netlink editions of Virtua On and Sega Rally are usually quite cheap maybe $10. And the final one is Daytona which is the rarest/priciest game on the system anywhere between $1000-$2000 these days. Duke 3D is probably the coolest Netlink game because its really the first console "online" FPS multiplayer game. Check out my videos for gameplay of it over Netlink. Bomberman was also great because you could play 2 players vs 2 players.

  • @DrunkencoderPayk

    you know what? i disagree with this one.
    the saturn version is the only version with light maps (light and shadows).
    rockets even put light on the ground while flying to the enemies inside dark rooms etc.
    only the saturn version has that. the n64 has better explosion effects, but no light/shadow, and the removed the boobies and girls. the ps1 version has no shadows and lights, has all the original content. so from all 3 home console versions: this might be the best one!

    I'm almost certain that Mark(the reviewer)didn't use the alternative control mechanic,the regular system wasn't as good,but using the alternative control system,which let you move duke forward,backward,left,right with the face buttons & aim with the anologue stick,& it worked an absolute treat,remember this was b4 most controllers came with 2 anologue sticks,that's why the dreamcast used the same system for FPS like QUAKE ARENA.The Saturn version is STILL just as playable as when 1st released!

    @DavetzWin it's not worse.. it contains additional levels (4th episode exclusively for the PS1). Framerate liquidity is as average as in the Saturn version (you have to turn off "frame sync" in options), but the controls in the PS1 version are responsive and relatively accurate, at least for the 5th generation console standrards. To be honest, among the console ports of Duke Nukem 3D, my preferences are: X360 > PSX > SAT > N64.

    It's amazing how this game made First Person Shooters more like how they are today. Sure, maybe Quake did it first, but this one re-emphasized it more. It wasn't very common in FPS games to jump either, so that was a plus with this game. Sexual arousement in video games wasn't common either, and neither was placing decoys to trick enemies. This game introduced a lot of new concepts, even as many as Goldeneye, which introduced stealth and objectives into FPS.

    I missed the Sega Saturn all together, so I have no opinion of this game, but from watching this review I noticed the cool lighting effect for gunshots. I think in the other versions the screen just sort of flashed for a gun shot, if it did anything. I think the orange glow from the muzzle flash was a neat effect. As for Duke 3D, I loved the N64 version, mostly because of the new guns and multiplayer with bots. Then again, that was the first version I played, so maybe that explains the soft spot

    I believe a true gamer isn't based on choosing a side. A real gamer can look at a game made for Colecovision and a game made for the PS4 and can find strengths in both and appreciate both for what they are.
    But lets be real: a REAL gamer is someone who actually managed to beat The Perfect Run in Super Mario Galaxy 2. You beat that and no one can say anything against you.

It's toned down, sexually, but overall it's a pretty faithful port and very playable- and fun! Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to give the original PC version a go! I love the multiplayer on the N64, the controls are odd, but at least you can modify them. I prefer going with the analog stick for movement.

    I also played PC version alot in the 90's and I still played through and loved every minute of the Saturn version. Of course, the PC version is better with a mouse & keyboard (and resolution), but for a Saturn owner in the late 90's, this version was awesome. I also didn't experience the same level of frustration with the controls. The Saturn version has colored light-sourcing, which the original did not have, and a Saturn exclusive level. It's a great game, and a faithful port.

    As I said before, the Saturn is more powerful in both 3D and 2D, but most developers didnt feel the need to spend massive amounts of time getting the extra performance out of it.

    Just played on the Saturn version just a minute ago. I agree that the menu is really laggy but I can put up with that. In reference during the game itself, all weapons respond how they should do except for 2: shotgun and the shrinker. The shotgun has a little bit of lag but you can adjuct to it. But the shrinker has ALOT of lag that can cause problems but overall I do like this game alot.

And if you type in Goldeneye on anything, the first one that comes up is the N64 one, so it is obvious I was referring to that one, especially so considering we were talking about a game that I said came out before the XBOX. And it isn't just my opinion that Goldeneye was the 1st good game on consoles, it is widely believed as so. Also, u stated Halo was the first good fps as a fact too.

    My favorite console version is N64.
    "But out of limitations comes creativity"
    That is what they did here. Changed the levels, replaced some weapons, made more realistic background, not the moving ceiling texture, and censored some bits. (i didn't care for the "porn" stuff anyway)
    And i love what they did to "Rabbid transit" level, doesn't look like a park ride anymore.
    But my favorite Duke Nukem is of course the PC version, with mods, levels, more effects and a level editor.

    The issue with the Saturn wasn't if it could run awesome 3D games, is that how it could run awesome 3D games. The Saturn was made with 2D Arcade style games in mind, and has 3 processors. It was extremely difficult to make games for, which is why there are no good emulators for it. The only two companies to get the full power out of the Saturn were Capcom and SEGA. At the same time, the PS1 is easier to make 3D games for, but the 2D arcade versions pale in comparison to thier Saturn counterparts

    Limited textures, door animations and control response were a drawback in this version. However the lighting effects when a gun fires and the water was certainly rather nice. Undoubtedly the best Ports are 3D, D64 and the XBOX 360 version :)

    Oh man, I remember the first day that this game came out for the PC. I was already a big fan of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom1-2 but didn't know what to expect because I played the old 2d side-scroller Duke Nukem games, but I had to try Duke Nukem 3d!! I walked up to the Best Buy counter and the casheir told me the price after taxes and I was like "oh shit man, I'm like $5 short!!!" This old man that used a walker behind me inline said to the cashier " Heres the rest of the money that boy needs.."

    I believe Mark's saturn may have a worn-down laser, that can cause the framerate issues seen here with lobotomy software games. I have two model 2 sega saturns, as well as Quake and Duke--One of which chugs horribly on both, and the other of which plays both games without a single framedrop. Go figure. How quake was ported to the saturn with all the glow effects is beyond me honestly, it wasn't even supposed to be possible to port it as well as it was ported. I wish lobotomy still existed.

    @ollyh82 I also think that CVG gave the N64 one 4/5 and PS1 2/5. I like playing Duke with Nights Controller but in D-Pad mode as I think the analogue movement is a bit off IMO

    Saturn was the first system I've played it on, I loved the Saturn version mainly because I never owned a PC that could run Duke Nukem 3D back in the day... But now that it's out on just about anything, I can enjoy it on all kinds of consoles. :3
