NHL 98 was my favorite. They really put a lot into it. I had it for PC and it blew my mind back in 1998. I loved how they had the goalie mask gallery too.
I enjoy seeing the old penguins logo which was the new penguins logo back when we used the old penguins logo which is actually the current penguins logo.......lol!!!!!!
My roommate and I played the NHL series (starting with this game actually) for countless hours in college -- we used to love these games... I've actually been playing the EA hockey games since their inception in 1991, and it's amazing what progress they've made since then... awesome review!
Listening to this game makes me want to drive to EA Sports headquarters, open up my laptop, play this video, and tell them to change their damn modern announcers.
I don't know how many hours I spent playing NHL 98 when it first came out. Incidentally, I also liked using the Pittsburgh Penguins. The only difference is that I used most of my own characters & traded Claude Lemiuex from the Colorado Avalanche to the Penguins.
Gonna bust out my NHL2K for my Dreamcast!! Man I have so many NHL games still kicking around for so many old consoles. Though nothing beats Blades of Steel...WITH THE PASS!!!!
I own both NHL 10 and 11, but my favourite all-time sports game is the one and only; NHL 2000 (I also like NHL 99)! Do a review of that one! (for the PC ofc) :) And by the way; all your reviews are just pure awesome, especially the sport games ones. Keep up the good "something-something"! (I don't know how you say it, I'm Swedish)
I had this game for both PSX and the Saturn. I liked the PSX version much better. The graphics were a bit more crisper than the Saturn version. A great hockey game for the Saturn was NHL All-Star Hockey '98, which was clone of Powerplay '98. Good review.
Jim Hughson who did commentary for this game also was on another other EA Sports franchise title: Triple Play 98. Another fun baseball game. I especially liked the EA Dream Team since they had weird abnormalitiles & had super skills (Like Eric Kiss who was a giant who could knock anyone down trying to tag him out & bat homeruns with ease).
Here are my favorite NHL games of each generation of consoles Genesis/SNES: NHL 94 or 96 PS1/Saturn/N64: NHL 99 PS2/XBOX/GCN: NHL 2004 or 06 PS3/X360: NHL 13 or 14 PS4/X1: NHL 18
Tbh, this looks really good for the late 90s, and the game play seems above par. New-gens don't understand games like this, nor appreciate it. Although I never had this, I will make sure to buy it, the commentary seems really good. :]
You should try NHL 97 for Saturn, it's my all time fav hockey game, much better than the PS1 version, perfect controls and speed, it's very smooth to play as well.
also there was this NHL game for playstation 1 that I remember. you played like 3on3 or something and could make supershots like twists n shit. totally awsome, you should try that one out, sadly I can't remember its name :(
@RocketOrganization The original Penguins logo is the logo we use now, which went from about 71 to 92 I think. Then for a season or two they changed it to the logo you see in this game, then they switched it back to the original then from like 98 to 2000 they used the logo you see in this game then from 2000 to the present they use the original with a few minor changes.
NHL 94 on Genesis and NHL Hitz 2003 are still my favorite hockey games. Though I do like the new ones as well. I actually have 98 on Genesis, it came with it when the console was given to me. It plays just like the old ones, but with some new animations and sounds, and the checking seems to be more brutal. It's actually pretty good on there. Though 98 to 2000 on Playstation and Saturn are too choppy for me.
Is it just me, or is this version way choppier than the PSX and N64 versions? Still the best video intro they ever did in the series was this one. Have you done a NHL94 journalistic review Mark? The community is still strong for that game, and it's in that same nostalgic and historically relevant category as Tecmo Super Bowl, which I know you're fond of.
@GaBB0256 They would get way to much hate for that, especially now that the NHL is cracking down on fighting and stuff...But your right that would be a lot of fun. There is one you can get for the i-pod touch and i-phone, it's called "Hockey Fight" and it's free!
Consider yourself lucky your city has a NHL team. I am from Hamilton and we have been trying to get on since 85 with no luck. Also it has gotten worse since Bettman has taken over, as he rather keep a team in Phoenix than move it to Hamilton.
98 was a huge leap from 97. The playstation version was alil better than the Saturn version. Saturn version has no scoreboard and invisible boards, just outlined. The Playstation version was a bit smoother as well. The little detail is what sells me
NHL 98 was my favorite. They really put a lot into it. I had it for PC and it blew my mind back in 1998. I loved how they had the goalie mask gallery too.
Gotta love those mid-90's Pens logos and uniforms.
I enjoy seeing the old penguins logo which was the new penguins logo back when we used the old penguins logo which is actually the current penguins logo.......lol!!!!!!
Still love that you're a Penguins fan, Mark.

One of the few Saturn games with transparent shadows.
This is probably what made me love hockey games.
I don't know how many hours I spent playing NHL 98 when it first came out. Incidentally, I also liked using the Pittsburgh Penguins. The only difference is that I used most of my own characters & traded Claude Lemiuex from the Colorado Avalanche to the Penguins.
great review as usual! you should definitely do a review of nhl 91!!
I remember playing this on PS and thinking the graphics were outstanding.
Gonna bust out my NHL2K for my Dreamcast!! Man I have so many NHL games still kicking around for so many old consoles. Though nothing beats Blades of Steel...WITH THE PASS!!!!
great review, keep it up buddy !
No Description available!! :D
Love your reviews! You should review V8 Supercars Australia 3.
I think it's called TOCA 3 Race Driver in US but I'm not sure.
Anybody else see the Surge logos on the boards at 4:53? SUURRGGE!!

True!

Memories of sitting in my dorm in college playing this game!
I had this game on my PS1. It was actually one of my first videogames ever. I also had a Rugrats game.
In 2098 it will be called NHL '98........2!!!!
Great review as always, got any Genesis game reviews coming soon?
This was the last NHL game i enjoyed.
Here are my favorite NHL games of each generation of consoles
Genesis/SNES: NHL 94 or 96
PS1/Saturn/N64: NHL 99
PS2/XBOX/GCN: NHL 2004 or 06
PS3/X360: NHL 13 or 14
PS4/X1: NHL 18
I know you probably don't have it and probably wont come by one for awhile, but would you do reviews on the 64DD and its games if you could?
Tbh, this looks really good for the late 90s, and the game play seems above par.
New-gens don't understand games like this, nor appreciate it.
Although I never had this, I will make sure to buy it, the commentary seems really good. :]
Olausson, Aki Berg and Petr Nedved lol! That's epic memories right there.
You should try NHL 97 for Saturn, it's my all time fav hockey game, much better than the PS1 version, perfect controls and speed, it's very smooth to play as well.
Wooohooooooo what a beautiful goal by Pavel Bure.
so many evening spent playin this with my friends :)
good times
Is the pregame announcer in this the same guy who does the "3,2,1,GO!" in NFS 3: Hot Pursuit?
Because it sounds a hell of a lot like him.
Was that Gumby on the skates?
also there was this NHL game for playstation 1 that I remember. you played like 3on3 or something and could make supershots like twists n shit. totally awsome, you should try that one out, sadly I can't remember its name :(
i remember this game, had it on pc
my fav part of the game was racing down the ice and absolutely destroying anyone i ran into :)
You're a Pens fan? Awesome!
I remember this game I had it back in the day on the sega sateren and I had FIFA 96 soccer. Good memories.
@SuperGorgasm CGR was out before AVGN, but AVGN is alot different from CGR. I'm amazed if you can't see the differences.
@RocketOrganization The original Penguins logo is the logo we use now, which went from about 71 to 92 I think. why is there a union flag for team england?
I think I'll hold out for the Vectrex port with 3D compatibility :D
2:58 you intended to check wayne gretzky? man, i don`t know.
NHL 94 on Genesis and NHL Hitz 2003 are still my favorite hockey games. Though I do like the new ones as well. I actually have 98 on Genesis, it came with it when the console was given to me. Awww... Where are those times when Pittsburgh was full of Czechs....
Are there any these days by the way (not pretty much into it now)?
I'm still waiting for that review on NHL 94. The guy's totally missing out!
Ah well, maybe it'll come with the NHL 12 review.
When will you review NHL 94? I'd like to see it.
NHL 91 was so awesome. and it was so smooth and fast. So much better then the following years NHLPA. NHL 93 was good too.
NHL 2002 is my favorite NHL game ever!
That Bure guy is banging DJ from Full House, lucky guy!
This was a BIG step forward from NHL 97 for the Genesis!
LOL Petr Nedved and Gary Valk! I miss those guys.
What, $120 for Standing Room Only at Console isn't cheap enough?
+CocoHutzpah Nobody's going to pay $120 to see Mike Johnston shit the bed with this lineup.
+Hikaru Kitsune Isn't it amazing how much ass they sucked in December and January and how they ended up winning the cup?
Can you play with Lord Karnage?
This is cool. They could have a made Saturn Jet Set Radio type game or Tony Hawk for the Saturn if they used this engine.
NHL94 is definitely the best NHL game in the classic hockey genre.
i LOVE this game i played the pc port when it came out and i loved it
Nice. I have this for the N64, and it doesn't look much different to me. It's fun and simple to play. Not for FMV fans. hehe
4:25 thats how my coach wanted me to play peewee hockey. I guess it because I was such a gifted player
Typical Gretzky, walks in from center ice alone, untouched and scores!
play as your favorite nhl team? that must have been hard for people in hartford in 98
@GaBB0256 They would get way to much hate for that, especially now that the NHL is cracking down on fighting and stuff...But your right that would be a lot of fun. There is one you can get for the i-pod touch and i-phone, it's called "Hockey Fight" and it's free!
"What are they going to do when its 2098?" Always asking the important questions.
Truly a great game!
@Chatpage Just because they both review games doesn't mean they're really that alike. Plus Mark tends to review GOOD games, so there you are.
Wheres Lord Karnage?
the graphics on the pc version along with 3d-fx weren't too bad. you should check it out. its still bad ass.
I have NHL 97 for the pc. Pretty close to this one.
Consider yourself lucky your city has a NHL team. I am from Hamilton and we have been trying to get on since 85 with no luck. Also it has gotten worse since Bettman has taken over, as he rather keep a team in Phoenix than move it to Hamilton.
review nhl 2000 for ps1...

Ya pens are awesome
i want those play-by-play announcer for nhl12 they are awsome :D
NHL 95 FOREVER!!!!

NHL 98 for pc/ps1 was a better version imo. Amazing chase camera too, so fun to still play today.
This is so much better for the PC.
Oh snap. Kirk McLean!! That's a name I haven't heard from in forever.
hahaha. i like the crack about jagr leaving.
98 was a huge leap from 97.
The playstation version was alil better than the Saturn version.
Saturn version has no scoreboard and invisible boards, just outlined.
The Playstation version was a bit smoother as well.
The little detail is what sells me
gotta love the sega saturn
Saturn graphics were better than PS1,but worse than N64
NHL '94 is still the king.
I loved NHL 93 then NHL 94 cames out and it was even better.
Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey '98 was my Ice Hockey game of choice. Loved that game, played it so much with my Dad and friends.
Just found the genesis version complete at goodwill
Haha he uploads his vids just like i do, no description available because he fills it in later.
woooooo!!!!Go Bure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eddie Olczyk! He's right, you do see these guys announcing now...
This game's got a hell of a frame rate, it's almost pushing double digits! They don't call it the world's fastest sport for nothing!
In 2098 the NHL game for that year will be
NHL '98......#2
Best hockey game ever, at least the PS1 version is.
wheres Lord Carnage?
oldest nhl i have is 99 for tje ps1 and it was like the last nhl to have goals called off for like 10 years or something... :D
