HACKING MY CARBON FOOTPRINT | Ft. UCLA expert Nurit Katz

  • Guys....I calculated my carbon footprint, and it is not a pretty sight :( Global warming, greenhouse gases, sea levels rising, ice caps melting....we hear these terms so often that they have sadly become background noise to many of us, myself included. But it's true, the environment is in trouble, and I wanna get educated on how much I'm contributing to the problem, and what more I can do to help fix it!
A huge thanks to UCLA and Nurit Katz, Chief Sustainability Officer! Nurit is an amazing educator and gave me so much incredible information. I was genuinely interested in everything she had to say and could have talked to her for hours. Check out the links below to some of the things she references in our chat!

Let me know in the comments what your results are and the things you are working on to make a positive change to your environmental impact!
DISCLAIMER: I am aware that there has been some controversy around the "Our Planet" walrus jumping scene that I was watching at the beginning of this episode. Whether or not global warming is the reason behind these majestic creatures falling to their deaths doesn't really matter in the context of this video, it is still the thing that got me off my butt and it doesn't change the fact that the evidence behind climate change is irrefutable. The ice IS melting. Animals ARE being affected. And we NEED to do something about it. And if watching those walruses fall to their deaths gets people motivated like it did for me, then all the power to 'Our Planet'.

I used to plant trees in the summer, and we could easily plant 1500 in a day, a pro could do 2-3000 trees. Nice comprehensive overview of what we can do as individuals to decrease our footprint, Thanks, and now Im going to go look for that Netflix episode you were watching, with the Walruses.

Amirah Kukan thank you for your kind words. I am trying to instill in him that the world consists of so many people and we must all do our part and not just in our neighborhood, which does help but to think globally. He is newly 13 but he has those adult thoughts like “what’s the meaning of life?”. Unfortunately I think kids have to think along the lines that are being talked about in this video because they haven’t been given a choice if they want to maybe have a family someday on this place we call home...

@@ohiogirl8703 so very true. Very true. I was a lot like your son growing up. I was born in 71. I wasn't normal. I can't explain it. I thought the way I think now. Know what I mean? I would watch these people. My parents. I understood who they were but I was confused. Why was I here. I didn't understand how they couldn't understand what I was saying. Why couldn't I walk? Where the hell was I.? They were familiar but this wasn't my home. I loved them, still . I felt a sense a doom. For everyone. Distant doom. And I wanted to go home. I wasn't walking or talking yet under a year old. These are my first memories of life. A sense of confusion and something told me to be weary of this world. Now I'm 48. And I still want out. I'm pretty sure we don't belong here. Anyway. We will know one day. Until then save this world we've wound up on. She's a beauty. Home or not

Fantastic video Katee. Thank you. I'll be sharing this with others xxx we can make a change together. Also, I have been using a menstrual cup for a few years now. It took some practice at first and I had to find a size (length and cup size) that was comfortable for me but it's been the best thing ever. My periods are lighter and less painful, I'm not using pads or tampons that have bleach in them and not dumping these things on landfills or using cotton to make them. Its saved me a fortune and I just boil the cup between periods to sterilise. It doesnt matter if it discolours. It's natural :) xx

This issue was actually brought up in the interview. It's all about attitude. As mentioned 3 million people are wondering is it worth bothering to not buy and throw away 1 bottle. This reasoning and mentality is a large part of the problem. Like many things in life we have a very limited ability to change/influence other people and the world but we have 100% ability to direct adjust our thinking and actions to change "our world".
Everyone is just like lemmings or sheep, just doing what everyone else is doing and blaming everyone else's actions as an excuse to not bother doing anything themselves.

So much of the culpability is forced on us end users. Consumer culture is so greatly driven by the corporations and the manufacturers. They drive us to consume for their profit. They dawdle at changing their processes and materials to maintain their profit. I know we can do our part individually but damnit they need to be held accountable and to fix things at the top! We have had such a burst of technological advancement in the last few decades but it’s all expensive in its newness and controlled that it just isn’t widely available and used yet.
I love when she mentions how much of our creative effort is put into making things. I weep at all the talent wrapped up in the advertising world. Such great artists who’s sole purpose is to use their creativity to condition and manipulate us end users into consume, consume, consume.
    Great espidode!

I remember no more than 20 years ago when all airlines that I traveled with (yes my family traveled a lot) served in non plastic cups, plates, cutleries and other things... there was literally none to minimal plastic usage as far as I recall, even in coach; why can't they do the same now? Cost cutting aside.
I understand the cost of it, but wouldn't they actually cut down running costs in the long run by not having to continuesly buy more plastic material?

I wish some of the experts would address the issue of electric autos a little more in depth. 63% of the electricity produced in 2018 was produced by burning fossil fuels. In my opinion buying and driving an electric auto only works if our electricity production is changed drastically to sustainable sources. Just my opinion. FYI, California’s dirty little secret, all the electricity for Catalina island is produced by diesel generators.

    • @KateeSackhoffOfficial
      @KateeSackhoffOfficial  4 года назад +2

No I haven’t. There have been many studies that report getting rid of a perfectly good car and buying a new one is actually detrimental to the environment. Unless, as stated by our expert in this episode, you sell it to a person who doesn’t drive at all. Otherwise the SUV is still on the road regardless. When we buy a second car this year it will be an electric vehicle.

    • @keithfranklin214
      @keithfranklin214 4 года назад +2

@@KateeSackhoffOfficial Understood, but also realize it could have a trickle down effect. Likely the person who buys the SUV used will be replacing another older car that likely is less efficient and so on and so on until a very old very bad for the environment car is scrapped. Once you go electric you will never go back. Also Tesla's are by far the safest vehicles on the planet.

I sobbed like a baby at that scene, too -- it was so intense. I did the carbon footprint thing and was shocked at the number. It was much higher than I wanted it to be! I have downsized into a 300 square foot apartment, I don't have a clothes dryer, I haven't owned a car since 2007, I moved to Europe so I could travel by train instead of car/airplane. The country where I live uses nuclear power. I became a vegetarian. Trying to see what else I can do, so thanks for this video!

#KateeSackhoff. I LOVE that you are doing this and bringing awareness to the issue. Please consider that going vegan/plant-based is the BIGGEST single thing you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. Nothing else even comes close on a per person scale. Keep up the good work!

I love you so much!! I love Longmire and have the blu rays. I loved and binged Another Life and hope there is another season!! I found your RUclips channel by accident and was so stoked. I love the videos you share and you're an inspiration. I love helping wildlife and the recycle etc. I love planting plants and hope to try to start planting trees. I live in the South so I am thinking of wandering off in the woods and planting them. And your suicide video helped a lot as I have suicidal tendencies and I thank you! Please more videoes of everything. Lots of love! 💕

Hey Melissa, we're kinda in the same boat here.. I found Katee's channel by accident too & I've watched one vid after another & just keep falling more & more in love with her.. I'm putting off her vid on suicide though, since i struggle with it a lot too & I'm thinking of watching it after i finished watching all the other ones, I'm so glad this channel exists & I hope she can keep uploading more stuff, I'll watch anything of hers. I haven't watched Longmire & Another life but i will soon, I'm excited I'll get to see her in a show once more. Have you watched Battlestar Galactica? cause thats where I fell in love with Katee.. one of the best shows ever. I think Another life is sci-fi too like BG so thats cool. She's the queen of sci-fi & i don't mind labeling her the queen of everything else.😁 I'm sorry you are struggling with suicidal tendencies, i know what its like, i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.. I'm sending you all my love & prayers.🙂💙💙

I purposely did not watch that Our Planet episode because I heard about that scene and I knew I would start crying! Anyway--Katee, would you consider going (back?) to vegan or vegetarian? The carbon emissions for meat are insane, not to mention the plastic pollution to the ocean due to fishing. If people can't go vegan, at the very least cut down the amount of meat and dairy you eat and/or do not buy from factory farms and buy locally when possible. I've also recently learned about bioplastics that are made from fungus! Another thing that people don't often talk about is not having kids. Adding one more person to the billions of people already on this planet doesn't help emissions/consumerism/etc.

    Hi, Katee,
While I’m well aware this is random and weird, as you well know, show-business is bananas, and considering this journey you’ve embarked on, I was hoping you’d see the value in an unconventional approach, so I’m figuring it’s worth a shot to ask....
Would you please star in our movie?
We’re making a SAG-AFTRA feature adaptation of Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ in NJ with Peter Greene starring, and Mickey Rourke supporting, we need an actress to round out the cast, and it would be a dream come true if you could play the role.
We’ll be shooting for a month in northern NJ in the fall, and have accommodations for the cast and crew on location.
Your role would wrap in 5-7 days.
Sure, I could call your agent, but I just watched you do goat yoga, and go electronics free for three days, so I’m thinking you’re open-minded.
Hence- why not try to cast you through a RUclips comment?
I hope you’ll consider this very odd request.
No matter what, you have a lovely channel here, and you look like you’re laughing a lot, and having a great time. That’s a wonderful way to start.
I hope it continues, and this endeavor brings you everything for which you’ve hoped.

Ms Sackhoff, the next step is a concept of #circulareconomy aka “made to be made again” . If you look up the Ellen MacArthur foundation that will explain the concept. It goes beyond recycling, reuse, reduce. It begins at design stage.
Thank you for using your platform to increase our awareness and prod us to action!

I think it's horrible all this plastic. Why don't we bring are own cups and utensils when we fly? Bring our own bags when we shop. Things we can use all the time. Not throw away. That should be really looked at. You don't bring. You don't drink or eat. Simple. It should be law

Wow! Great video Katee. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Will definitely be looking at more ways I can help.
Also, after learning that I would need to 132 trees per year or 11 trees a month, here in Texas I found the Texas Trees Foundation which offers a monthly volunteer program in my area to... plant trees. The next open volunteer outing to sign up for will be in October. Thank you again for inspiring me and I look forward to seeing more content from your channel.

Loving the content Kate. In Scotland we recycle glass, plastic, cans and we are on the way to being completely green by 2020. 3/4 of the way there Jn. It’s policy for Our new homes to have solar panels installed but the older homes are left alone. We have wind farms that can power our cities because of our tidal and wind potential in the highlands.

Planting trees is more important now than ever before. (south American & african fires). You should get ahold of Jason momoa. Water in cans instead of plastic. Plastic isn't recyclable. Also look into algae farming. 8 cubic meters can provide as much oxygen as 400 trees, plus you can eat the algea or use it to produce biofuel/diesel.

You know, I won't say I'm prepared to make such drastic lifestyle changes but I appreciate hearing from an instructor about sustainability and promise to be more conscious of my impact. I've wondered about a number of the things discussed here and I like learning as much about our planet as I can. I think part of the reason I was so hesitant to commit to more sustainable practices in my youth was because it was always clear to me that society would need to change in a drastic and fundamental way to stop the bleeding of mother nature. I will never forget watching an episode of Reading Rainbow in my youth where Lavar travels into the future only to discover that pollution has made the planet inhospitable. It was sad and harrowing. The fact that this episode told me, nearly 30 some odd years ago, that our planet was doomed and people only seem to be waking up to this realization en masse now is part of the problem. Until our assess are literally on the edge of that cliff and not the walruses, people will largely continue to live the way they do because it does not require drastic change and because we are too dependent on our current infrastructure to change without significant loss. Jobs used to be so much easier to get to because we used to live in small communities where everyone worked in the town they lived in. And there are a million more examples beyond that. My hope is that I'm not leaving the planet for future generations to suffer, but that someone will sci-fi us into a future where our impact is irrelevant to the planet. This is why I enjoy scifi and why I'm on your channel in the first place - innovative solutions to problems that have been predicted for lifetimes. Maybe that's just wishful thinking. But I find comfort in hope.

Your carbon footprint score should come down now and you shouldn't have to plant so many tree's because you have inspired some of your viewers to pay attention to what environmental damage they are causing. I would say if you reach one viewer with this knowledge it will keep you from planting 400 tree's a year.

I love a bit of lemon in my water or tea. Ten years ago I started growing lemon trees from the seeds in the lemons, and I gave them out as gifts to family and friends. Some are now 10 feet tall. A few people killed them, but others took care of them. I can't plant hundreds of trees, but I can give them out, and it gets people interested in doing the same.
Thank you for this cool video. I will share it.

I would assume, please correct me if I'm wrong, that the reason hotels are carbon footprint heavy is because after your stay all of the linens in your room require laundering. At home, most people launder their bedspreads and towels on a semi-regular basis - whereas a hotel requires this for each guest regardless of the duration of use.

It is intimidating right?? But I think that's the key, you don't need to change everything all at once, just start making small changes over time and setting the example for other people. Getting educated is really the first step which is what I did for myself and hope this video can do for others :) Thanks for watching!
