The aim is simply to give people, that unfortunately could not have been saved today, a chance to live longer.

So do it; see the future. It's incredible now, but in a few hundred years it will be commonplace. I'm signed up with Alcor; I have friends who are signed up with CI; and there are a few other companies you can sign up with. The alternatives you're usually given are burial or cremation. You can do better.

Thanks Katee, that was a very interesting video. I've watched many sci-fi movies and tv shows over the years, and always thought cryo freezing was just science fiction. But Max does make some interesting points about science moving forwards, maybe not as fast as we want, but who knows what will be possible in the future. I'm getting older, I'm making those involuntary noises when I stand or sit, would I want the possibility of a new life in the future, maybe.
The medical term is you have to be “warm and dead” to be declared dead. We also do something called therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac arrest which protects the brain and allows those who suffer sudden cardiac death to have normal or close to normal brain function if cooled quickly enough after brought back to life once they recover. It’s been one of the most important discoveries in medicine in the last few decades...
As I first watched Another Life, I was uncertain. When it had moments of necessary bad ass take charge moments, the way you played Niko and how you showcased that bad ass feel and take charge. Pumped me up! You’re damn good in it! #starbuckforever ❤️

Hey Katee, this was good... it was funny when you were talking to Max More about how he got into Alcor and life extension, I had the exact same attitude regarding those issues that he did when I was growing up. I believed that by the time I was as old as I am now, we would have most diseases cured, people would voluntarily live for hundreds, if not thousands of years and die when they wanted to. I was definitely someone living in the future as well (no flying cars or shuttle trips to the planets)... I've been hoping for Alcor to work on the legal side of things, like trying to coordinate with states that allow for physician assisted suicide to offer a controlled freezing process as an alternative. I have also hoped that some of their supporters in academia and R&D would look into short term hibernation. As Dr. More stated, trauma surgeons and ER physicians have been using limited types of hibernation ... you would think that they would start to look into extending it for short term preservation for patients with terminal illness that might have a chance with new therapies in development but they won't be ready fast enough to save their life... so maybe a limited hibernation time of less than five years.
I first became interested in cryonics while reading "The First Immortal" by James L. Halperin. It's a great scifi book that explores not only the effect of this on a current time period, but how it might be to wake up in an unknown future. Truly a great read.

Hi Katie, It is nice that you have a mind that is open to cryonics. I have been signed up since about 1991. I'm 82 now and don't want to be cryopreserved. I would rather not die and cryonics is the second worst thing that can happen to a person but it is a great plan B. If you like living and are optimistic, there is no reason not to sign up. It would be wrong to bet against technology. If you were dying in a hospital and they gave you 3 choices, including being buried, being burned to ashes, or cryopreserved, it is a no brainer. Until aging and death are cured, cryonics is our only hope. I hope your mind can get used to the idea so if and when necessary, you can join our friendly and optimistic group to meet again in the future. G'day Katee, That was SO interesting. I also noted that you asked extremely good questions. As a former journalist, I can pretty quickly identify a good interviewer and you slammed it. Great questions. That is all about listening. You were, obviously, interested in the topic so you listened intently to what the gentleman was saying and based your common sense questions on what he was saying. I'm not entirely sure that there will be jobs for film critics 150 or more years in the future but then, I really liked university so much I thought about staying and getting my Masters and becoming a lecturer. In the future, one can only guess at the levels of education that you might need to become a university teacher. I might only qualify to teach kindergarten. But, as the Alcor chap said, you will have the opportunity to, eventually, do whatever you want to do. In Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future there's no need for money, so, people work to better themselves... that concept has always fascinated me. You're probably luckier in that no matter how far in the future you wake up, people will still want entertainment so, I guess there will always be jobs for actors. This technology assumes that the mind is in the head, not the result of a specific living animal's interaction with the environment. It would be a bit uncomfortable if, when they figure out the tech a couple of hundred years down the line, they realized that the assumption isn't correct.
It's a very expensive prestidigitation for the rich. Those people will never wake up. Katee you are smarter than that! Meditate, be conscious and be aware, live so that your conscience is clear when you have to go. The journey only begins...

I wonder what the psychological implications would be of waking up centuries after you were last conscious, having to learn how to function in a new reality, and - in some cases - knowing that everyone you loved is long gone... that's got to mess with your head... are we sure people are ready to deal with something like that?

You do realize you need to be frozen BEFORE you die to be revived, so you must choose to end your life prematurely, DEAD is DEAD you will not be staring AT any thing , nor will you live forever,gold fish have been revived from frozen only to DIE a few days latter ! Good luck

A friend of mine did a presentation on Alcor back in the 90s so it was very exciting for me to actually be able to see the place and how everything works!! It's definitely something to consider!! I just worry about what the world is going to be like and what I would wake up to!
Take a chance! :) If the world is really bad, it's unlikely they would bother to revive you. So if you wake up at all, it's probably in a world where people care enough to do such things.

I looked at Alcor, Cryonics Insitute, and Oregon Cryonics. Its such a fascinating way to time travel. It would be wonderful to see how our culture and technology changes (hopefully for the better). And I do think its reasonable to think that cellular damage could be repaired in the future to address any imperfections in cooling and dilution. And I dont mind head vs whole body. But what about your friends and family, not everyone could come a long? Plus there is the whole discussion about an immortal soul. And finally, I dont think anyone should live for ever, all good things must end. Fun stuff!
I think you should live forever. Death is really the end and if you die for good, that's it. You won't experience anything. I can get people who get bored of a hobby or a job and think "it's time to move on from this" but I don't see it the same with dying.
After seeing this i think it's worth doing Katee. If you can afford in some way to do this why not, there is no downside to this as I see it, live your life as you would and if you by able at the time close to your passing then by cryo preserving you could be able to restart over in 100 or 1000 years it wont matter as you wouldn't notice the passing of time and if it doesn't work you will no the wiser.. so i say take the chance and sign up there can a whole new adventure just waiting to happen when you wake up. I would say tho you should make a intensive video dairy about yourself and have it stored away so when you awake you can make sure you remember who the person you became.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing. At first glance: 1. We don't really know what consciousness is. I highly suspect just your brain matter does not make "you" complete. 2. Over a long period of time it's basically a certainty that the institution/facility will fail you. They don't have much of an incentive to keep you in the best possible condition. Quite the opposite in fact, since they already have been paid and storeing or even waking you up just would cost them money. Not having any rights as a frozen object doesn't help either.
Alcor has thought of #2 already. They have the patient care trust that is designed to keep the money and organization going and they have a duty to help you. Not doing that duty may end up with them being sued. #1 is likely as well. Why wouldn't just your brain make you you? It's where all your thoughts are.
A lot of comments about cost here, so I wanted to chime in. I am an Alcor member. I'm 44 years old and pay $144 per month for a life insurance policy that covers my cryopreservation. Had I purchased the policy when I was younger, my premiums would be even less. Regardless, $1,728 annually for the possibility of coming back down the road is absolutely worth it to me. If you have any interest in cryopreservation, I very highly recommend talking to your insurance agent about policy costs.

I wonder what the psychological implications would be of waking up centuries after you were last conscious, having to learn how to function in a new reality, and - in some cases - knowing that everyone you loved is long gone... that's got to mess with your head... are we sure people are ready to deal with something like that?

Doing it for sure. On the one hand... Live forever. On the other I could end up as a museum exhibit with my mouth open staring into nothingness.
You do realize you need to be frozen BEFORE you die to be revived, so you must choose to end your life prematurely, DEAD is DEAD you will not be staring AT any thing , nor will you live forever,gold fish have been revived from frozen only to DIE a few days latter ! Good luck

That was incredibly interesting!! Thank you for doing that!! A friend of mine did a presentation on Alcor back in the 90s so it was very exciting for me to actually be able to see the place and how everything works!! It's definitely something to consider!! I just worry about what the world is going to be like and what I would wake up to!
Take a chance! :) If the world is really bad, it's unlikely they would bother to revive you. So if you wake up at all, it's probably in a world where people care enough to do such things.

This was fascinating!
I looked at Alcor, Cryonics Insitute, and Oregon Cryonics. Its such a fascinating way to time travel. It would be wonderful to see how our culture and technology changes (hopefully for the better). And I do think its reasonable to think that cellular damage could be repaired in the future to address any imperfections in cooling and dilution. And I dont mind head vs whole body. But what about your friends and family, not everyone could come a long? Plus there is the whole discussion about an immortal soul. And finally, I dont think anyone should live for ever, all good things must end. Fun stuff!
I think you should live forever. Death is really the end and if you die for good, that's it. You won't experience anything. I can get people who get bored of a hobby or a job and think "it's time to move on from this" but I don't see it the same with dying.
After seeing this i think it's worth doing Katee. If you can afford in some way to do this why not, there is no downside to this as I see it, live your life as you would and if you by able at the time close to your passing then by cryo preserving you could be able to restart over in 100 or 1000 years it wont matter as you wouldn't notice the passing of time and if it doesn't work you will no the wiser.. so i say take the chance and sign up there can a whole new adventure just waiting to happen when you wake up. I would say tho you should make a intensive video dairy about yourself and have it stored away so when you awake you can make sure you remember who the person you became.

At first glance:
1. We don't really know what consciousness is. I highly suspect just your brain matter does not make "you" complete.
2. Over a long period of time it's basically a certainty that the institution/facility will fail you. They don't have much of an incentive to keep you in the best possible condition. Quite the opposite in fact, since they already have been paid and storeing or even waking you up just would cost them money. Not having any rights as a frozen object doesn't help either.
Alcor has thought of #2 already. They have the patient care trust that is designed to keep the money and organization going and they have a duty to help you. Not doing that duty may end up with them being sued.
#1 is likely as well. Why wouldn't just your brain make you you? It's where all your thoughts are.

A lot of comments about cost here, so I wanted to chime in. I am an Alcor member. I'm 44 years old and pay $144 per month for a life insurance policy that covers my cryopreservation. Had I purchased the policy when I was younger, my premiums would be even less. Regardless, $1,728 annually for the possibility of coming back down the road is absolutely worth it to me. If you have any interest in cryopreservation, I very highly recommend talking to your insurance agent about policy costs.

You probably CAN afford it. You pay for it with life insurance, and if you're reasonably healthy, it doesn't need to cost that much.
