I love these movies.
The genius thing they did with this reboot was that the initial encounter with the Romulans from the future created this alternate timeline. In doing so, while some things are familiar, they were unmoored from any of the previous storylines.

Bruce Greenwood is such an underrated actor.
Notice the ship yard where the Enterprise is built looks a lot like SpaceX Bocca Chica the tanks, Wearhouse's etc.. just a look more advanced...
Will SpaceX build the early versions of the Enterprise ether on land or in space at some point possibly in the next 20 years... aka build the vessel first(now) let technology eg engines/fuel type/defences etc catch up.....
Man would I love to have a Star Trek series with Bruce Greenwood as the lead. Obviously old Spock is the most "real Star Trek" aspect of the movie, but Greenwood's Cpt Pike is a close second. He makes for a great Federation Captain.

The moment they were on that drill and Sulu fell off, and Kirk screamed "Sulu!" and then just ran and jumped off the drill with no regard for the warnings or the danger, just that instant response of going to save his friend no matter what - that's when I believed that he was truly James T. Kirk.
That's not how Kirk acts. He always knows the danger of the situation and consequnces of every action. If he jumps, the fleet loses its captain, most likely forever, and this is not the situation for that. He never loses his head, even when Spock died in Wrath of Khan.

When Zachary Quinto gave the Vulcan Science Academy that tiny smile, and told them to "live long and proper," with the absolute tiniest drop of sarcasm, that was when I believed he was really Spock.
Although the drill scene was almost ruined the the fact they gave the charges to the guy in the red shirt. Like there was no way to guess he would be the first one to die!

@@ilovejettrooper5922 He was killed by the faulty parking brake of his Jeep Cherokee in his driveway. His driveway was on an incline and he was standing behind his Jeep when the parking brake failed and the Jeep rolled backward and killed him.
Notice Chris Pine's Kirk is eating an apple as was Shatner's Kirk in the Genesis cave in the Wrath of Khan when he finally tells Saavik how he beat the Kobayashi Maru test. I like that detail.

If that's true, he Used To Be a "small" actor. Because everyone knows, "There are no small parts/roles. Only small actors." This was a great role, though small. And he killed it. All few minutes of it
But it was the most impactful 5 minutes of the trilogy.
His lack of screen time wasn't a reason for him to quit though. It's because after the role his oppertunities dried up for at least 8 months.

This movie has some of the TIGHTEST editing of any I’ve seen. Barely any “fat” to trim. Also, the sound design is killer!
As a film major focusing on editing I fucking love this movie so much, this and into darkness is so sharp with the cinematography and editing

@@happyslapsgiving5421this is old AF but a lot of movies have scenes you could cut or trim bits off of. Dialogue that's too long, still shots, placement of shots, etc.
Star Wars New Hope was literally saved by editing, there's a wonderful RUclips video on it, search "how star wars saved in the edit"
@@allnightercinema it's just wall to wall intense. Every little bit is important to the overall story. Fantastic editing, fantastic cinematography, fantastic score, fantastic script, fantastic cast. This is one of the most underrated "perfect" movies around imo. People who don't know Star Trek mostly skip it because they expect it to be geeky and silly. People who do know Star Trek mostly don't like it because it's thematically a bit different from a lot of the past Star Trek. So people like us kinda end up in this small middle ground group of giving it a chance and seeing how it is legitimately really, really good from start to finish
Into Darkness and Beyond, while slightly less airtight in production, are both still seriously underrated. I think Beyond is actually my favorite of the trilogy for the cinematography itself. That one shot of the Enterprise with the warp bubble wrapping around it is burned into my mind as one of the most deliciously visually satisfying shots in all of sci fi

I was fairly lucky to not be a super biased super fan of star trek before this so I'm in the minority (seemingly) of really enjoying this movie

Spock as a child is based on the old animated series episode "Yesteryear", where he travels back in time to his childhood so he doesn't die as a young man.
In the original timeline, Christopher Pike was captain of the Enterprise for 15 years from 2250 to 2265. His voyages are shown in the original pilot "The Cage" (2254), the second season of "Discovery" (2258) and the upcoming "Strange New Worlds" series.
The test is the Kobayashi Maru test from "The Wrath of Khan"- Kirk cheated on that one as well. When he reveals this to Lt. Saavik, he is eating an apple.
Spock is the one to try to save Romulus because he is not only the ambassador to Romulus, but is also the leader of the reunification movement which tries to unite Vulcan and Romulus.
Sulu is mentioned as being trained in swordfighting as in the episode "The Naked Time" everyone gets really horny and crazy and he chases people down with a sword.
Nero's story was expanded on in the Countdown and Nero comics, however much of the plot of Countdown has been contradicted by the new Picard series.
So, uh, Scotty mentions losing Archer's beagle in a transporter accident, but Archer died in 2245... whatever.
The planet near Vulcan is called Delta Vega as a reference to the TOS episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before", although that one was at the edge of the galaxy.

Scotty was displaced into the future by a transporter accident a yeat after Kirk died in the timeline we know. This is probably when he invented that transporter technology. Tune in next time to see what putting those equations in the past can do.
The creatures the Romulans are using to interrogate Pike are the mind-control creatures that Khan used to control Chekov and Captain Terell in Star Trek II. In a deleted scene, the Klingons used them on Nero and crew. You know how the Narada emerged near Klingon space... and Uhura listened in on a Klingon transmission about 47 Klingon cruisers getting destroyed? That was the Narada. In the 25 years between the prologue and the rest of the movie, Nero was imprisoned on the freezing Rura Penthe, which is where Kirk and McCoy were sent in "Star Trek VI". Then they broke out.
Pike is confined to wheelchair as a reference to his original fate- he was hit with delta rays that severely disabled him. All he could do was respond to yes-or-no questions with pathetic beeps. Real body horror shit right there.
The thing with Archer's beagle always bothered me. It's obviously not Porthos, because that would be crazy. Jonathan Archer died in 2245 at the age of 132. If I remember correctly he lived just long enough to see the launch of Enterprise NCC-1701 in 2245.
Also, Sarek, Spock's father, said marrying Amanda, Spock's mother, was logical, a line also said by Sarek in the show ("Journey to Babel"?)
While I have my issues with this series, I *LOVE* Karl Urban as Bones. Dude literally oozes DeForest Kelley. I’d watch just to hear him crack wise on everything. 😂

So it was THIS TRILOGY. RIGHT HERE. That got me into Star Trek. I could've cared less about Star Trek before but this movie right here? Turned me into a Trekkie. I was hooked. It lead me to watch every Star Trek ever and I have 0 regrets. The best thing to happen to me, really.

I went to a few before they stopped, I love how the actors are right there with the fans, I walked in from the parking lot one year after smoking a cigarette and a guy asked me to hold the door, he passed me and looked familiar, it took me a few seconds to realize it was WORF! Then the last year I went I went to the bathroom only to have someone come up a few urinals over, glanced over and it was DATA! ... I was a little heart broken as it's the one place where it's super inappropriate to say something too them so I just peed in silence next to an actor I loved LOLOL

I’ve watched Star Trek ever since I was a kid: first the TOS, then Next Generation, etc. I saw all the Star Trek movies when they first came out in movie theaters and I must say that I really liked this one. I liked how they modernized it and got a whole new generation of fans. Even people who never saw Star Trek before and knew nothing about it could watch this film and enjoy. Personally I liked all 3 of the Kelvin timeline movies.
This movie was great, did an amazing combo of Star Trek with a Star Wars style setting (JJ Abrahms being a huge SW fan might be the reason). The sequels were really meh with questionable plot and character choices, but this stands great on its own
Same. Loved the classic 90's era Trek, but Star Trek was effectively dead after Nemesis in 2002.
Roddenberry had been wanting to do a prequel movie/series with the original characters and how they became a crew but it never happened.
ST:2009 is exactly what Trek needed.
This trilogy led me to get into the originals. Peaked my curiosity for the lore.
This movie came out when I was nine years old, and it's the reason I started to watch and love TNG, Voyager and DS9.
I love these films. I never even realised how many people hated them until I read youtube comments. I thought it was a really clever way to redo the original characters, by putting them in a different timeline, thus not stepping on the toes of the originals.

Absolutely. They are great films and it was a brilliant way to reboot the series without retconning the originals.
A lot more people loved the movie. They're just not as "commenty" as complainers and trolls in general, so you will always be exposed to more negativity online than exists in real life. Most people enjoy it and go about living their lives assuming the majority of people enjoyed it, and are usually blissfully unaware of what people who have nothing better to do than complain or make incendiary negative comments are doing to get attention, and most of those people don't care either. :)
I was fine with the Abram movies. I LOVED the first one. The modern Trek shows, made by Alex Kurtzman, however are crimes against humanity.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched this movie. Everything about it-the script, acting, editing, special effects, directing, and pacing-is perfect!
Kirk „cheating“ in the test is a callback to „Wrath of Khan“ where I believe it was said Kirk had been the only cadet to ever beat the simulation 😅
And yes, his parents/family weren’t mentioned in the classic movies, but in at least one episode of the original series!
Btw, Captain Pike who recruits Kirk in this movie was the Captain of the Enterprise in the series (long lost) Pilot episode 😇 if I remember correctly, only Spock was part of his crew in that episode
Much of the footage from the lost pilot was also used in the 2-part episode "The Menagerie" with a slightly different ending. In that, the ending of "The Cage" is not canon, while the changed ending of "The Menagerie" is, as it was the only one aired on television.
@27:01, the last time Majel Barrett’s voice was heard in Star Trek, most notably as the ships’ computer and Gene’s wife. She passed away in 2008.

People think it's cool to shit on JJ Abrams, but he actually did a great job producing this trilogy. Plus, he gets bonus points from me for producing Star Trek Beyond, which is classic Trek through and through. Written by the Trekkiest fan of all, Simon Pegg. It's wonderful, and I can't wait for you to react to it.
Beyond feeling the most like Trek and also being the one Abrams had the least to do with.
I think he does deserve some shitting on, especially with some decisions he's done on his other projects, but I do love what he's done with Star Trek.

As someone who’s mostly unfamiliar with Star Trek I can’t say if it’s good Star Trek material, but ST Beyond wasn’t a good film.
The problem isn’t always JJ, he didn’t write these movies but I guess most people didn’t know that.
He’s a great director and producer but his writing for the Star Wars movies is the real problem.
And I hear from Star Trek fans criticize these movies for their writing.
Honestly, this is the cleverest way they could have updated the original series. Some franchises frankly abuse time travel as a plot device, but this film made absolutely perfect use of it and made everything fall into place.
I know everyone complains about the second one, but I personally love it, so can't wait for you to hopefully check it out.
I loved the fact that they went into the childhood of Spock and Kirk and the fact that they used the original music from TOS
This movie and this trilogy are my absolute comfort movies. I always feel happy in my heart watching this.
This is a good comfort movie. It's kinda encouraging because you see them when they were young and not yet the confident, amazing people they would come to be. And it's fun to try to relate to that
The music in this is absolutely amazing
The movies were tastefully done and very well cast. They keep the spirit of Star Trek in tact, with awesome story lines. Now that the time-line is changed, there's no way to screw up the storyline.

This movie is just fantastic. They nailed the cast, the first hour of the movie is absolutely amazing. As a lifelong trekkie I was a bit afraid to the theater, but I really enjoyed it.

Fun Fact: Admiral Picard leads the Romulan evacuation before the Supernova destroyed the planet in the original timeline.
They touch on that in the show "Picard".. Still waiting for it to come back on air. Even Data and Seven of Nine are there!

Very glad you enjoyed this so much. As an original Star Trek fan since all the way back to the 60s, I think the entire Abrams trilogy is excellent.
The actor playing Chekhov passed a few years back, I believe he's in the 2nd film and they dedicated it to him in the credits😞🥺
I love this triology so much. This version of Star Trek was the first sci-fi series I ever got invested in as a kid. I couldn't buy DVDs often so my uncle let me borrow movies from his huge collection a week at a time. The number of times I kept borrowing this film over and over again was too many to count, eventually he just let me keep it. Obssessed didn't even begin to describe how I felt about this movie. And then Into Darkness came out, and the cycle started over again lmao. Can't wait to see you watch the other two!

I ADORE this movie. The action, the humour, the nostalgic moments and the MUSIC (Michael Giacchino take a bow) … I had shivers up my spine at the end.
There will never be another John Williams, but Michael Giacchino is as close as any current composer to carrying on the tradition IMHO.
His name is James Tiberius Kirk. Jim is a nickname, short for James. Also, Bones (McCoy) is played by Karl Urban, "Billy Butcher" in The Boys.
That said, I LOVE that you give Trek so much love :)
I love these 3 movies actually. They're newer and funner than the originals, but didn't go total downhill like the new Trek stuff.

But you nailed one important part that made the new movies work. They were FUN. The one thing the TNG films had unfortunately forgotten, or just struggled on. Insurrection was an interesting attempt, but stumbled. Bottom line, I had fun in this movie from start to finish
New Trek is literally run by the writer of these movies and takes cues from these movies. It’s not downhill, it’s just telling different stories.
The first 2 were at least alright but 3 was super “eh”
We all cried like babies when we realised the baby was Kirk and his father was going to die.

The score, the cast, the vibes everything is perfect. Also little details like the lens flare and the screen shaking when coming out of hyperspace.

This is the type of reboot concept that was perfect to begin with, because it is just getting their origin story arcs to cross each other and see the adventures we may have only heard tidbits about, here and there.
In retrospect, looking at this movie and who is also in the next one, and I can't help but make those MCU connect the dots of Avengers acting in other movies before they became Avengers. Lol.
I would love to see Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in the MCU.
We have Zoe Saldana, Chris Hemsworth and Karl Urban (also a LOTR alumni) in this movie.
Benedict Cumberbatch is in the next one. (Also a LOTR alumni).
The actor who played Chekhov died because of a malfunction on his SUV, which rolled back on him and killed him, when he was manually trying to open the gate to his house. R.I.P. to him.
Tyler Perry managed to get a role in this movie, which is a big fantasy for a lot of actors that got even the smallest part in one of these movies, as fans, themselves, of this legendary franchise.
R.I.P. to Leonard Nimoy, the og Spock, for giving us one last encore before leaving this world.
Credit to the talent in this movie and J.J. Abrams that did the franchise proud. Just to see the growth of them before and/or during the rise of their acting status from this movie on...wow.
The talent:
Saldana as Gamora, Chris as Thor, the guy from Harold and Kumar movies (forgot his name) playing a more serious action movie as Sulu, Zach from playing Sylar from Heroes to Spock, Winona Ryder making a small combat here to end up on Stranger Things later, the very first Captain to die on the opening of the movie played the leader of the 10 rings army in the first Ironman, the actor who plays Scottie from his usual comedy movies like Sean of the Dead and the Mission Impossible franchise...everybody upped their game for this. I was absolutely blown away at how well this movie turned out.
Now a days reboots get a heavy eyeroll 🙄 because it's been overkill for too many franchises.
But bravo to this one.
Kirk a Spock used to be smart, disciplined, responsible, mature tacticians. Now they are clumsy, goofy, emotional, hot-headed teenagers. Sign of modern cinema...

I'm not as attached to Star Trek as Star Wars (I have watched the entire TOS but only bits of other series), but I liked these movies. They are different, the characters are a bit different, but to me it makes sense the way they set it up, and the action scenes are just fantastic in my opinion
As a primarily Star Wars fan myself (but I’ve seen most ST things), The Next Generation is the best ST there is, IMO, and Deep Space Nine is also highly recommended (though the first few seasons are not as strong, the show gets better with each season and ends on a very high note.)

I grew up with the original show and this reboot of the original was everything that I could have hoped for and more... I have seen the trilogy several times and they still bring a smile to my face... I must confess that outside TOS, Star Trek Continues and the reboot, I never felt compelled to watch any other Trek incarnations... I still hope for more from Kirk, Spock, Bones & Co, fingers crossed... It would be fun to have you react to TOS sometime...
Honestly most Star Trek incarnations are enjoyable if you can refrain yourself from being to much of a critic. There's so many Star Trek ''Purist'' out that that cry foul about every Star Trek incarnation besides TOS. Even the movie reboots get shit on. My personally I'm not complaining. I grew up with the TNG era so Picard is my guy and but I've enjoyed pretty much everything beyond that. I'm just glad there are people out there keeping the franchise alive for newer generations to experience.
I grew up on the original series I watched all of Star Trek TNG, deep space mine, Voyager, and Enterprise. Until this movie came out I thought Enterprise was as bad as Star Trek whatever get. Boy was I ever wrong. It's okay that you like. But please don't compare to the classic Star Treks. This movie has a plot a kindergarten could have written, science that a three-year-old would have written and made everyone a cartoon character version of themselves. When I watched it I didn't know if I was watching Star Trek or a Batman starring Adam West. It is so awful. It's not even a good movie let alone a good Star Trek story.
@@CarlosHuiskens I find these incarnations of the characters as enjoyable as any character created by a little tiny two-year-old boy. If you have children you would know what I'm talking about. The only saving grace of these JJ Abrams films is the acting. Somehow they made three-year-old toddler dialogue sound almost intelligible. That shows it's a fantastic acting
@@BondFreek Star Trek Purist detected! Don't act as if ANY Star Trek content is so amazingly written. Every piece of Star Trek content has it ups and downs. Even TOS can be written by a 3 year old based on the way you look at it.
It's OK that you don't like some of it but don't act like you're the leading authority on what is and what isn't good Star Trek content. That's not what a fan does. A true fan can find value in anything and will respect the effort put into creating that content.

Karl urban as Bones was the best casting in these films. Everyone else was good, Pine managed to be Shatner enough whilst still not going over the top but Karl Urban literally embodies Deforest Kelley (the original actor) and it’s insane. It’s said Leonard Nimoy was brought to tears on set because it reminded him so much of his friend who had passed.
Glad you enjoyed it. It was by JJ Abrams who did the new Star Wars trilogy. As someone who enjoyed TNG, I get where the criticisms of this movie come from. It's a beautiful CGI festival from beginning to end, a tense roller coaster ride that doesn't let you off until the last moment. It's got pretty explosions, sword-wielding Sulu, and space birthing. It's dense, character-focused entertainment. You may love that, but it leaves so many Trek values behind.
These movies are actually canonically in an alternate universe! The new ST Discovery show flat out referenced the events of this movie - Nero's ship disappearing through a black hole. :D So yeah, these movies just became actually canon!
Discovery is less Star Trek than this is.
Disco trek, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy.... it's all non Canon. Just a cash grab.

@@travisfoster1071 Lower Decks has been surprisingly entertaining. It's stuffed with knowledgeable references to the good Trek series. Plus, it's set right after Nemesis and we get to see Riker as Captain if the USS Titan. The Titan showing up to save the crew from the Pakleds is my favorite Trek moment since the fourth season of Enterprise.

I love the new trilogy. Some of the old Star Trek fans tried to nit pick them saying they're too much like Star Wars but they are fun, full of action and great visuals.
People hate on the reboot movies but i like them and specifically this one is the one that got me to watch all of Star Trek franchise. After this one I got to watch the old movies and i liked them also and went on the shows and watched them all.

It's hilarious, when Pike asks Sulu if he left the parking brake on, and Spock points out the inertial dampeners... That's literally the parking brake.
A good friend of mine was a featured extra on the bridge crew for this movie. So, I have to love it. But as a long-time Trek fan, I can honestly say that I would have loved it anyway. Chris Pine's portrayal is EXACTLY what I always imagined a young Jim Kirk would have been like. The fact they got this part right was enough to sell me on everything else.
The man who plays Kirk at the beginning of the film IS Chris Hemsworth.
To really appreciate this movie you have to watch the original series to see all the nods to it, the uniforms, the sounds made when switches are thrown, the design of the hand phasers, the navigation dish on enterprise, Sulu with a sword and so so many more Abrams really did Star Trek justice with this.

Being only the second actor to don the mantle of Captain James Tiberius Kirk is a very tall order, but I think Chris Pine did an outstanding job, he was well cast.
When Scotty beams 3 people from 2 ships onto 1 platform, the guy sitting next to him is Chris Doohan, the son of the original Scotty.

What you remember hearing is that this is the Star Trek universe reimagined, not remakes. Some aspects have been changed, alternate reality style.
I would love to see you react to a few more episodes from the original series, like the classic episode "City on the Edge of Forever," which was voted by the American Film Institute as one the top 100 episodes of any series in TV history. I think you will love it. The episode also contains the first curse word ever uttered in a scripted series.

TNG came out when I was a small kid. Been in love with all trek since. Me and my wife went to watch this in our local theater the first showing. First time I’ve ever been in a movie that ended with a standing ovation. 🖖
Fun but sad fact the actor who played Chekov is Anton Yelchin & he died in 2016 in a car accident!
I think his car rolled down his driveway trapping him between the security gate & it squished him! 😞😞
The actor that played Chekov passed away a few years ago. Such a massive shame, I was a big fan of his acting. He was also Kyle Reese in Terminator: Salvation.

my mom take me to this film because she loves the og star trek series so she was super excited to see this. the end scene when kirk goes space the final frontier, every single adult in that theater was reciting it and i looked at my mom and told her she was not allowed to make fun of me anymore for reciting the lines when watching Harry Potter

So as a Star Trek fan from the series I have to say this was very well done from my expectations. After First ContactI always felt Star Trek needed something to spice up the franchise. The TNG cast did very well in that movie with the action and villian.
The Reboot Star Trek had great execution. To keep the original timeline and opening the "Kelvin Timeline" to ST fans was brilliant to me. We have updated effects and high stakes while keeping the dynamic of the OG characters. It proivded fresh blood that was really needed.
I know ItsAPrimte only watched the movies but a part of me wish he'd so the series as well. Maybe in 2-3 episode reactions.

The destruction if Romulus is actually a pretty significant event in the Original Series/TNG timeline; there was a comic prequel to this 2009 movie that followed Spock and the TNG crew teaming up on the Red Matter plan, and the planet’s destruction in the original timeline is a plot point in the series “Picard.”

I've been a Star Trek fan since the 70's. Seen every episode of the first 2 shows. Saw every movie in the theater. And this may be heresy to some, but I enjoy this movie and the follow up the most out of all of it. Yes there are plot holes you could fly a starship through, but for pure entertainment they are just a joy.
These movies are their OWN story. I see it as that, these are great and the old movies are great. I loved these movies.
