Marvin Gaye saw Raw Soul and feel in love with them. Marvin said, you brothers are talented but we got to change the band name. Raoame Lowery came up with the band name Maze. @Sondra Vickers According to the guys in the band, after Marvin suggested they change their name because in his opinion the Philly name didn't fit the sound the unique sound the band was creating by the mid 70s. I agree as that name doesn't begin to capture the dynamics of this band & by 1975-76, that mix of tight Philly funk mixing in with the relocation to California certainly was inspiration for FB compose those laid back melodies & lyrics. As it turns out the group made the perfect name choice which reflects the sound of this band perfectly imo.
This was the sound that connected me to these amazing musicians back in 1971 on a little oakland street named Harrington Avenue. Bbqs, ping pong and rehearsals for the next gig. Brings tears to my eyes. RIP Sam Porter and McKinley "bug" Williams. Frankie and the boys still doing their thing from your no. 1 fan.
Together again Frankie Bug Sam today news hit in a way like when I heard Marvin Gaye. My Philly Brother when I say I never missed any Frankie Beverly & Maze shows when they came to Philly I wanna say Thank You for giving us such beautiful music and memories Job WellDone 🕊️🕊️💔💔
There is nothing more amazing than this live before they were Maze! The funk hits so hard and soulful!! I Need You has me on my knees!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Roame on those vocals! Jesus!!!
One of a kind! Been doing Frankie since my childhood but never knew about Raw Soul. There will never be a group that will Top these guys in my opinion. I had a cousin who loved Maze and he would listen to the cassette tape every night on his way to work. Sadly, one night on his way to work he was struck by a train and didn't survive. It gives me some type of comfort knowing that the last song he heard was by Frankie Beverly and Maze. We were able to retrieve the tape from the car. R.I.P. to my cousin B. Davis and the members of the band who we have lost also....
YES!!!!!!!!! MARVIN GAYE IS THE ONE THAT TOLD HIM TO CHANGE THEIR NAME...HE TALKS BOUT THAT + HIS WHOLE LIFE, ON THE SIMPLY AMAZING" INTERVIEW WITH, ROLAND MARTIN...CHECK IT OUT ...
Even when they were called Raw Soul, I could tell that they were headed for Success. To me they were exceptional back then and I give them the same A-Plus today!
Love vintage Frankie! Little did we know what was to come. FYI...The first song of this show "Teach Each Other" was officially recorded and released on "The Brothers" (2001) soundtrack. It would be Maze's final, released studio recording. Thank you Frankie and former band memories for some lasting memories. 1️⃣♥️
For a moment there, I thought that was Cody ChestnuTT up there frontin' the band (lol)! Really nice to see the complete Winterland set of Frankie Beverly and what would later become the group we all now know as MAZE!!! Before I forget, RIP Sam Porter (organ) and McKinley "Bug" Williams (background vocals, percussion). Gone from this world, but not from our memory banks! ;-)
True and Raw, talent just like the name, Frankie and Maze, you rocked this. RIP, to the two men now deceased. God, bless all of you, Frankie you and your hats: caps rock as well
.................. wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it, went to Winterland from 1965 - 1969 incredible !!! .

Philly can relate to this long before Maze had a record out, Going back to the Georgie Woods days when the band did a lot of local show's around the Philly area and were called Raw soul.
I still remember when it all began. Free concerts it the Philly parks & "Battle of the Bands"!!! He will always have that Philly soul...!!! Great memories...
I had no idea it was Frankie Beverly. I was guessing Santana, War, Tower of Power, Rare Earth. I even thought I heard Billy Preston on organ keyboards not Frankie Beverly and did not know the Marvin Gayle silky soul connection. connection. Thank you
This is Vintage ........It took this long to find out that raw Soul became MAZE!! Is this the same personnel? Thank you for this!! We love you Frankie Beverly!!
So this is the beginning of franky Beverly's rise to legend status, wow! You can certainly hear franky Beverly and maze inside this group , amazing , franky transferred his signature sound to the latter group .
That first joint got some Carlos Santana vibes going on They would definitely Raw hand found their own sound yet am I opinion, but they was sounding good anyway once they got their sound going. Once you heard a few notes being played you knew it was a Frankie Beverly maze joint thanks to whomever who shared this. This made my day they these were some hell of a musicians. uncle Frankie bug and.Roams vocals were so smooth. You could tell they love what they did. It just came so easy how they flowed with one another uncle Frankie brother Junebug. Brother Sam RIPower❤
Even back then this group had it going on. If they had never changed the name of their group, it couldn't have taken away the originality of what they stand for: One of a kind MUSIC!!There will never be another Group that will reach the level that they later on came to reach.
