But Magic is doing fine. WotC is mismanaging the hell out of it and it's still selling better than ever. By mismanage, I mean: March of the Machines: Aftermath and Outlaws of Thunder Junction being egregious scams, Jewelled Lotus and Mana Crypt bans (WotC didn't accidentally reprint those...they were in cahoots with the former rules committee), the list goes on. Magic is not "struggling". WotC is favoring EDH players because that's who's buying cards. Modern and Vintage are being played on Arena for free. EDH has to be played with cardboard. Pokemon has broader appeal so it sells better. Magic isn't Pokemon, comparing them is apples and oranges.
I see where your coming from in that the magic IP is not only one "skin" applied, but in the modern era I dont think it even matters. see fortnite. and in regards to your example monopoly is the top 3 top selling board game of all time. chess, checkers, the monopoly. Even schools buy chess and monopoly. chess has a lotr version. chess has a pokemon version. but chess hasn't changed in forever. but how many chess players can name the top 9 openings? not many. probably cant even name the top 9 most influential games. I think the comparison better applies to legos, where its the same brick but builds into a different skin / item, just like a magic deck. Also magic is about inclusivity. when someone is a HUGE fallout fan for example I have never seen anyone get turned away. people are just happy to play together. anyone who is actually in it playing magic never bans universe beyond. they are more concerned about power level.
I don't mind Universes Beyond. I don't care about MtG Lore, it's entirely irrelevant to why I enjoy Magic. I like sitting with strangers and playing cards while talking shit. I do think there are purists who will get butthurt and I hate that they want to ruin other people's fun. I admit: I prefer smaller Universes Beyond releases. I don't like Standard set sized UB's like Fallout and Assassin's Creed. I prefer something like the Warhammer 40k: Four themed commander decks. Or the Street Fighter Secret Lair that was 7 or 8 cards? Or even the Godzilla cards in Ikoria (alt Art reprints) or Transformers cards in Brother's War (new unique cards). I think that makes them really cool and special. A full set is honestly too much of a good thing, I don't want to see the originality of the Mtg World completely disappear under too much Universes Beyond merch... UB needs to be special, it's not special if you can't sneeze without hitting UB or Secret Lair cards in everyone's decks.
Becomes monopoly lmao it's so accurate
"I'm not going to talk about Pokemon..... Guys Pokemon is DESTROYING Magic"
Hey I at least waited a few minutes!
