A Day in South America’s “Most Humane” Prison

- Prisons in Latin America have the reputation of being the most violent and dangerous in the world; overcrowded concrete spaces where corruption, gangs, and drug cartels reign. By contrast, Punta de Rieles offers a different reality. Located in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, it's known as "the prison from which nobody wants to escape".
The almost 100-acre property features ample outdoor space where inmates can live, work, do yoga, have pets, and play music. Here, the focus is on helping prisoners re-acclimate to society before they've even left confinement. VICE en Español spent the day at Punta de Rieles, talking to inmates and learning about Uruguay's progressive "open" prison.

J Briggs how do you know they did? innocent until proven guilty. they have jobs, they have lives, they have the skills necessary to lead a normal life. one guy straight up said "i went back to prison because i couldnt find a job to support myself" that speaks volumes.

It’s almost like if you treat your prisoners with respect they become better people 🤔
shocking!
a fact i hoped more people would understand...
Unless they are psychopaths.
I know right? Who could’ve imagined?
Wow fr tho who could've imagined that they're humans too and they need to be respected and treated like humans so they can act the same!
Yall act like all prisoners are murders and rapists and not low level or non-violent offenders who are probably working class people who had to turn to stealing to survive. This prison is about rehabilitation so that when they leave, they have new skills that allow them to contribute to society. American prisons could learn a thing or two from this. Oh wait, prisons are privately owned and they want prisoners to return and perform more slave labor...
I'm American. I 100% agree with this. We have a shit jail/prison system.. It's the most populated in the entire world.. Which is fucking terrible...We do need a major reform in it soo bad it's not funny.. Yea private prisons shouldn't even be a thing at all, But it's not all privately owned btw. We have a branch of them, it's County jails, city jails, state prisons(minimum and maximum security), federal penitentiaries(minimum and Max security mostly Max security), and then you have the "privately owned prisons" (minimum and Max)
One of the prisoners was an armed bank robber
Wtf u talking bout
DAMN THAT CLOSER BOOOOM

@@synckid Robbing a bank because he was poor -- he didn't kill anyone. Oh, so actual rehabilitation.

These are just this century, there are many more if you go back to the 20th century. I suggest you read, research and travel a bit before you give boneheaded opinions and confirm your ignorance.
Is UY perfect? Absolutely not, no place is. However it is a very progressive country leading the way in many regards.

100 % opposite of the USA where there's money to be made off of incarating and not rehabilitating.
this is one prison in Uruguay . Pretty much all the rest of them in the country are worse than American prisons.
That's capitalism for you, every time anything is in question, left wingers think "How can I use that to help people?" and right wingers think "how can I use that to make money?"
We also have a wayyyyy more violent prison population though. These kinds of prisons work really well in Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands, and American states like Maine and New Hampshire but they do not work in diverse areas or in places where the violent crime is extreme and follows little rhyme or reason. You can't reason with some people and this type of "rehabilitation" wouldn't work with the number of mentally ill and violent prisoners the US prison system deals with. It is said that the prisons double as psych wards and that is true. Low level offenders would benefit greatly from this kind of thing but not extreme individuals; at that point it's more about containment than rehabilitation.
If Vice returned to making credible productions like this then I think everybody would be happier.
Nick Farley
How about you watch what you like and stop bitching about how vice “used to be”. They never stopped doing the same documentary pieces, they just also branched out into other media ventures. Watch what you enjoy, it’s not that difficult of a concept.
@@newthrash1221 They have changed quite a bit since 2012 though, not saying they dont make anything good anymore, but its not at the level it used to be
idk if it's just the title but i got such a calm vibe from this video!
Uruguayos are chilled kinda people
At 3:26 he says "I decided to turn my situation around and bring PEACE to my family", not "and make money for my family".
It seems a minor error in the translation but maybe it reflects how the US guys still don´t get what this prison is all about.

Exactly. I lost it when he said he still charged him. 😂
I've been to every country in North, Central, and South America. I have to say Uruguay is one of the strangest places. I felt like I was in Europe.
That's because most of the people there are full Europeans.
We are 88% of european descent. Yet we call ourselves "charruas" which was the tribe that lived here and which the first uruguayan president exterminated in a genocide. Very messed up when you think about it.
get the fuck out of here you fascist fuk
As a Uruguayan of Greek descent, I can say that Uruguay's population are almost entirely white and of an European background. Uruguayans, and Argentinians for that matter, are mostly either of Spanish and Italian descent, with some numbers of French, Germans, Jews, Armenians, etc. Both countries culture are heavily influenced of that of the Europeans, creating that European atmosphere as you mentioned from the cuisine, to the lifestyle, even the way we speak has been referred as Spanish spoken with an Italian accent (Rioplatense Spanish).
@@anibalmaximilianopapadiama1910 in argentina there actually a community that still speak welsh.
Uruguay was the safest most well organized country I have been to in all my South American travels.
Beautiful!! More videos like this! So proud of these people and for the system they’ve created! This is how you make people better!
This prison was a brilliant idea. I hope they can expand on it throughout South America, and here in the U.S.
The us seeks profit, i doubt these prisons are profitable
This is what is done in Sweden, Finland and many other countries and their recidivism rates are very low!! Teach them that they matter, show them they aren't animals and that they can succeed and they will.. They can learn to have empathy for people and not want to harm them when they are back out on the streets.. It works in the US when you give low level offenders jobs with animals.. The recidivism rate drops by over half!
Swnsasy _ what about the people they have murdered, the families that have lost their kids, wives, fathers? What about their heartbreak and desperation that they are left to live with every day? Prisons are meant to be a punishment for ones actions not some wellness spa centres. When you take someones life hurting people -you loose the right to human rights as well. I can see this kind of program working only with some minor thieves. When you start to treat murderers and rapist like this you will have a street full of people who will murder rape and kill everybody because they know a good life awaits them inside.
@@leelialeismann9664 Hon, did you listen and read the charges? These are not for murderers and rapist.. These types of places are for bank robbers, thieves, crimes like that... You have to watch the video because it shows that.. Did you not fully read my comment? I SPECIFICALLY SAY, LOW LEVEL OFFENDERS!
@@leelialeismann9664 so... According to that logic Finland is a land of constant murders because the "good life" awaits inside the prison? Interesting
@Mrs egg Man Over here that's really little, people get shoot at or stabbed for 20 pesos (less tha na dollar). Cultures can be different, these guys are really innofensive, compared to what crime is really over here in most of southamerica.
No, its not. The majority of Swedish prisoners never take part of a rehabilitation program, also the recividism rate is the same as USA but its 80% for young people who are sent to REHABILITATION. What a success right?
Excellent journalism. Wow. I want to see more documentaries of prisons like this with follow ups please
Here in Norway we have a prison system very close to this, the are fully open and give people job's and education for even the most violent of crimes, and it has one of the lowest repeat offenders in the world.

It's sad to say this method will work only with the ones who genuinely wish to Change as human beings.
It will work to every body that's motivated by economic need and have attachment to normal life.
And locking people up in their cells to do hard time works with absolutely no one.
3% recidivism. 3%!
@@junkheadrooster the jail has been open since 2010, so its relatively new and need more time to show results.
Prisons have many inmates who genuinely wish for change but are never shown compassion leading to motivation and so don't believe it's possible.

The issue is, people will see that the conditions actually aren't that bad and will WANT to go to prison. That will cause a huge overcrowding issue, and won't really fix much in the US. I like what they're doing though.
This type of prison is good af.
Especially that the Rapper has a chance to record his songs and even a video in the prison is such an nice idea. Of course there is only an recitivism rate of 3%!
Greetings from Germany
Excellent. I trust this is the higher road to health, healing, and self esteem. Where people are treated like human beings than they have the greatest opportunity of recovery and restoration. I think there is a similar system in some European country. Of course they have more money and new facilities, but the conditions are similar with respect and freedom of movement. The brutal conditions of many prisons is inhumane and senseless. It either breaks people down do they are dependent for life, or it causes frustration and rage and increases conditions of violence. It usually guarantees a high rate of recidivism. I think every culture, nation and society should make it a top priority to decrease prison populations with future goals of no longer having any prisons or prisoners. That is possible by making society much more inclusive and not allowing neglect, abandonment, or injustice to be an initiate of youth.
Why aren't the faces at 00:20 not blurred out when at 9:17 they are?
What a great system. Many countries could learn from this
As a great man once said 'the system (in america) aint reformatory, its only purgatory'. With that being said, look what dude said at 12:18. I find that incredible.
Dude, the barber was so cool

Wow this should be implemented in all of country's prisons.
This is the way forward as far as prison system goes.
A prisoner has a fresher fade than me, I'll be back.
I served over 4 years when I was 23 year old got out when I was 27, I never been in trouble before and it was just crazy night where I had a fight and something bad ended up happening which I regretted as soon as it happend. Throughout my experience of prison I was shocked by the mentality of the system it’s so obvious they set people up to fail to make them come back for profit reason than rehabilitate, this is the case so what’s the point in prison in the first place when all your doing is making a problem worse, by the time I was released I was extremely hardened to a differnent way life the way I acted the things I was doing which I saw as no problem because I’ve been watching people getting stabbed for years but to people who havnt been inside you look like a crazy man, it took me over a year to feel normal again prisons will not and don’t work unless the whole system is set up to better life’s not ruin them
That's your journalist? Bro.. that's Tom Hardy.

0:15 6km is definitely not 10 miles!
Many times people who commit crimes, had no option, had no development opportunities, they were living in poverty before their felonies, then maybe what people really need is the chance to create something productive and appealing to themselves. I really admire the authorities that supported this idea!
Almost not normal after seeing almost every prison is how we know they are but this does make me think if it's a good system for prisons
This is a crazy good Idea. I love it
