  • Growing Drosera Ultramafica Spatula from seed purchased on eBay. This is my first attempt, and the packaging it came in leaves me worried. It only cost me 3 bucks so we'll just see what happens. I only have peat moss and perlite in the pot. No fertilizer and rain water. I used to own some but some stray dogs ate them. I know... Hopefully I will be able to enjoy this wonderful plant again. I will try to do update videos to show the progress for anyone interested.

Hey, I must have ordered from the same kid for 3.00 cause what you got was packaged just like what I got. Now I know the mistake I made. After a month, there were about 15 microscopic plants growing........and despite so tiny, when looking with a magnifying glass they already had dew on themf. I kept them covered. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!! Mold got them all in one night except for one. I scraped the mold away and the one that lived is fully grown now in 6 months time since planting and has two flower stalks that have already bloomed! So, from these I will get my own seeds and only cover in the beginning next time. Or, maybe not cover at all.

That's awesome! I'm surprised I got any to sprout at all. Mine are outside, and I think half survived (about 7-8). They are very small and aren't growing very fast. I think most got drowned out by rain and fried by the sun. I also bought some of the filiformis variety and got about 4 to sprout. Now this one grows fast! It's already catching Mosquitos like crazy!

+NewbBeginnings At one time I had a ton of Carnivorous Plants outside all year and am in the Pacific Northwest. They all were in pots placed in kids Swimming Pools. Wow.............did they ever grow and we ended up with 4 pools stashed. Wintered them over in a sheltered place with Hay stashed all around them until about March when they started coming out of dormancy. The Sundews we grew outside usually had little to no dew to them because of the sun, but they lived. Now I grow them all year long inside next to window that only get about 3- hours of sun per day. They like it best here. I never water from above but instead keep the containers water holders with amble water to absorb upward. For the plant mix it is always about 1/2 CANADIAN Peat (not the green kind) to about 1/2 Perlite. Both come in bags called *Natures Brand.* It is important to use CANADIAN PEAT and none other. Glad you are having great luck with the Filiformis and good.........let it catch those mosquitos!

Man that's cool. Lol Ya, I'm no where near that scope. You must have had tons of plants!!l This is a kind of addiction for me. I find them so fascinating! I keep acquiring new plants, and the ones I have keep multiplying. Maybe I will need a kiddie pool eventually. I'm thinking of filming my nepenthes next. Thanks for the tips too! I and everyone else sure appreciate them from experienced growers. It was a lot of trial and error for me. Many a plant lost its life :( RIP

I had trial and error at the beginning too. Caught on fast however and wow, the way those plants grew in those kiddy pools. HUGH! The White Topped Pitcher is the champ of them all for catching insects despite it being narrow compared to the others. Unfortunately it comes along later in the season. I bought a small one off Ebay last Spring and it produce
2 good size (over 1 ft. tall) mature traps with a 3rd one on its way. And, grown inside on the Kitchen Windowsill. Unbelievable! But so odd. Cobra Lilly's live in my state..........and they are the ONE Plant I have no luck, or patience with and gave up on trying to grow. LOL

+theepilot355 No growth yet :( I looked online and it said anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks. I haven't lost hope yet. I ordered some filiformis from Germany. I will try planting some of those too.
