Feed me Seymour! Summer 2014 compilation of my Venus flytrap Audrey catching bugs. Shot from my phone, so the quality isn't great. The insects trigger the traps, and the carnage begins. The carnivorous plant manages to catch flies, a spider, a cricket, and a beetle. I tried to get some post digestion shots after it eats them. I hope you will enjoy!
The Venus flytrap (also Venus's flytrap or Venus' flytrap), Dionaea muscipula, is a carnivorous plant native to subtropical wetlands on the East Coast of the United States in North Carolina and South Carolina. It catches its prey-chiefly insects and arachnids- with a trapping structure formed by the terminal portion of each of the plant's leaves and is triggered by tiny hairs on their inner surfaces. When an insect or spider crawling along the leaves contacts a hair, the trap closes if a different hair is contacted within twenty seconds of the first strike. The requirement of redundant triggering in this mechanism serves as a safeguard against a waste of energy in trapping objects with no nutritional value.
Dionaea is a monotypic genus closely related to the waterwheel plant and sundews, all of which belong to the family Droseraceae.
Savage
I like how it closes tight enough to contain the insects, but also leaving enough gaps to show them the freedom they once had
Ikr
+KingBren ya, it's pretty intense. Must be a horrible way to go!
They do it so that smaller insects can escape. Since it's a waste of energy digesting them.
Salmon Saladsandwich That\s quite a good point, thank you for telling me!
+Salmon Saladsandwich I like the explanation KingBren gave. It sounds more sinister
The flytrap is like
"shh, just let it happen"
+Niewidzialna ręka rynku don't fight it
shhhh don't resist it, it will be painless and quick if you stop moving
Deathstroke1137
we got a little bit sexual here XD
+Niewidzialna ręka rynku Omg ITS RĘKA ITS RĘKAAA
+drey santillan we sure did
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) I'm pretty sure the plant is tired from standing in one place and needs to "release"
The music is all like: each year, millions of flys die to these carnivorous plants. Donate today and save fly lives.

im sorry
you named your flytrap Audrey.
I
I have no words.
+jerzy wach hehehe
Thats so sad... Just slowly being squished alive...
yeah!
Actually its more of being digested alive. Once the Venus mouth closes shut it will then pump digestive acid to begin eating the prey.
+haruhidude No, it doesn't "pump acids" at all. Stop making things up and spreading misinformation.
When a Venus Flytrap knows it has an insect inside (by detecting oils and compounds produced by the bug) it secretes digestive enzymes, usually proteins, to extract nutrients. Acid isn't involved, so why did you type that repeatedly to other people?
+MrBahBZ Ikr! You cam clearly see that there is nowhere for the "acid" to come out!
Brutal
doesn't even feel sad, O, circle of life :)
That's music 🎶

Make me cry That music and the insect's
That ladybug tho it just let it happen hahaha
poor flies:(
Plant has to eat though. I do feel bad for them sometimes
+WonderDrugEchinacea I agree. They are bugs, but I don't take it lightly. It does make me feel bad. I appreciate their sacrifice.
+WonderDrugEchinacea Flies suck, I hate them, and anytime they go into my house I kill them all the time.
WonderDrugEchinacea Oh, I see the difference. Thought you meant just straight on killing them is terrible.
+jayden harris Screw flies disgusting little pests the whole lot of them I have a fly trap myself and I laugh every time a fly gets eaten by it.
When I get a flytrap I will name it flowey
Go for it. Check out eBay, seeds are really cheap! Just a few dollars. Just read up on their care. They aren't hard to grow, but you cannot treat them like a normal plant.
watching animals dying, it is kinda fun
+Alan Chan Insects are not considered animals.
Ty Bailey creatures
+TheKolopololo Oh, my mistake.
+Alan Chan I said that to alert you to the fact that animals and humans are sentient beings and all want to live. Why do you think it will be great fun in watching animals die?
Rani Chandi because they hurt plants, and it it time for revenge
rest in peace ?-2014
I muted your vid and played Disturbed: Down with the Sickness. It actually syncs up pretty well.
Ya, I would have put something more appropriate but RUclips copyright is very strict! Hope you enjoyed the video portion! Thanks for watching

the song in the background almost made me cry seeing the insecsts trappped
Hi Erwin. I'm sorry it made you sad. I was feeling a bit depressed while editing. Thanks for watching though!
what was that last one?
That was my drosera plant. It was eaten by stray dogs last summer :( I plan on getting a new one. It has little sticky globules that are secreted, and when a bug walks on it they get stuck. The leaves will sometimes fold over the bug very slowly, or those filaments will fold over it. It is then digested and absorbed through the leaves. I want to make some vids, but I will probably need time lapse because the process is pretty slow. Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed it!
this was relaxing O.o
+Seda Seyli hehe, thanks for watching!
Do you remove the bodies after digestion? Or will they digest it again with the next meal?
+FacelessFigure the wind and rain usually cleans them out for me :)
Not sure if you're reading comments, but I've noticed that if my traps catch a bigger insect, like a ground beetle or something near that size, the trap will just die off after a few days. Is this normal? Something I'm doing wrong?
I find the traps can be used 2-3 times before dying. It seems to take them longer to digest bigger insects, so they will remain closed longer. Harder bodied insects like beetles and wasps seem to give it trouble, and I don't think they can digest as much. The left overs can then rot the trap. Soft things like worms aren't exactly good either. Mine seems to do well with spiders and other flying insects. Bigger insects can also escape, and I have seen it happen. You really don't want to feed it something too large because the trap needs to be able to seal itself. This helps keep out rot while its feeding. Try to feed it insects no bigger than between 1/3 to 2/3 the trap size. Sunlight is also important for its nourishment and growth.
I just leave it outside to do it's thing, and don't really feed it. You don't want to overfeed either because it takes a lot of energy for them to open and close the traps. If you leave it outside make sure the substrate doesn't dry out, and never water with tap water!!! Use rain or distilled water only! They are very sensitive and require a damp substrate at all times. (Not soaking wet).
Hope that helps somewhat. I have some videos of my setup outside if you are interested. I've had these for 7 years or so.
Why did I think they closed a lot faster for some reason?
The Venus flytrap is like the honey badger of the plant world " it doesn't give a sh!t it just takes what it wants.
Its why the owners of flytraps have their houses fly free
what does venus flytrap do once bug or any other insect are trapped inside ?
+Pitchstar Chernenko it digests the insides leaving the exoskeleton!
+NewbBeginnings you mean there's some kind of acid that will melt venus flytrap's prey ?
+Pitchstar Chernenko digestive enzymes break down the soft parts. It's like a stomach.
Finally....I figure out how they eat. I didnt know how the digestion process works. Looks like they somehow suck the nutrients from the bug killing it but not dissolving it so it just leaves a sort of husk afterwards. I didnt know if they completely digested them or what. I wonder how the older dead husks get out of the flytrap so it can be clean again.
+Calvin Litt the wind and rain usually removes the remains. Thanks for checking out my video!
The sad music in the background make me feel bad about the bugs
Do they eat?
holy shit... this thing can swallow everything
+Edward just like your mom OH just kidding man have a great day/night
Do the 'jaws' get faster with each time they close? Thx for the videos.
Hi! Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed!! I find the traps die after closing 3-4 times. As they get used more, they tend to slow down before dying. Hope that helps!
Guys i have a question, one of my flytraps has a dead roach in his mouth for like a week or so, it was there when i bought it in the store. Should i take it out? Is it not letting other bugs in or snthing?
If you have it outside, the rain will wash it away. I just leave the bodies. You can get some tweezers and take it out. Just try not to close the trap, it takes the plant a lot of energy to do that. If there is no live food, it will just be a waste. Good luck!
How disgustingly interesting
+Scorpion Suebma I agree
The insects doesn't trigger the traps. When you touch the hair like growths on the side of the traps trigger them.
Hello! Thank you for watching. There are six triggers inside each leaf that look like hairs. When one gets tripped the plant is primed. When a second is tripped (or the same one twice) the plant receives an impulse to close.
NewbBeginnings That's what I was saying. It is the hairs that are the trigger not the insects. When the insect touches one of the hairs is when the plant is triggered.
The plant doesn't eat it entirely, how does it kill it's prey???
+Niels Van Der Ploeg when it closes it seals up and secretes digestive enzymes. Takes about 3-5 days. All that's left is the exoskeleton. Thanks for watching!
R.I.P Bugs 2014 - 2014

Hi! Glad you enjoyed it! Gymnopedie # 3 by Satie is the music. I believe he is a French composer.
No clue what some of the insects are plz tell the names
Well I know there were flies, a spider, a jumping spider, some kind of lady bug, and a weird baby grasshopper thing I think. Hope you liked the video, and thanks for watching!

The music makes this so sad XD
What does a Venus fly trap do?
It waits for bugs to walk into its mouth and then well it eats the bug
Ok
+ManiacMan982MC-JamesGreen 123 Which it then slowly digests over a few weeks then it opens up to reveal the empty husk of whatever it caught.
Ew
One thing I hate the most its the plant
What song is this?
the song was familiar to me... rusty lake game?
