Yes on most models you can, but it does only go one level and is used to check focus. So for example you can use it with red as a focus color on the internal screen. The external and recording will not be zoomed (clean) so you won't see it on the recording.
Many good tips Daniel, and I agree that most accurate focus using fast lenses at wide apertures is obtained using focus magnification. A technique I use with manual lenses is to place the zoom box at the rule of thirds cross point, punch in to zoom, focus then carefully press the shutter button. This usually gives me a sharp focus on the first attempt. Thanks for sharing these tips.
Some useful tips, thank you. However, if you attach an external HDMI monitor for video work then you have to turn off the HDMI Info Display to keep the back LCD display working. Then you can still double-tap and anything else screen-related. Also you can still see your focus peaking which doesn't work on the external monitor
Hi, my A7iii works the opposite way round, IBIS on during magnification, press AEL button or half press the shutter, and it turns it off, which is the opposite way round to you !
Thanks for taking time to produce and post this video, it's helpful, but I suggest you lock the camera on a better tripod for greater stability and to stop all the shaking around as you touch the camera etc. It's quite unprofessional and looks messy,. But thanks anyway.
Another helpful video... Can I suggest that you give your videos more descriptive titles? It will help to find them in future when looking for a specific tip.
I was very disappointed by the A7rIII versus my « old »A7 when using manual lenses. With the A7 , when you finished focusing , a simple pressure on the shutter button brings you back to the full screen . You can recompose and take your picture . Now you have to press again the button dedicated to magnification . Using the C1 button , you loose time . I will try another button as you show , a button I can press with my thumb. Thanks.
Here is a bug (?) that wasn't addressed in the II series of the A7 cameras (update: III series as well) : When manual focusing (with legacy non CPU lenses), the focus magnifier feature seems to lock the AE in place. As a result you cannot physically open \ close the aperture (on the lens) in focus magnifier mode, without getting the highlights blown, or a completely dark display. Both keeping you from checking focus. Is there a technical difficulty implementing AE in focus magnifier mode, or is this a choice by design?
Hi Daniel, with my A7R III I would like that using Interval shooting the focus was reacquired before each shot. I even set AF w/ shutter = ON but it looks like the focus of the first shot is used and never reacquired in subsequent shots. Is there a workaround to update focus before each shot when using interval shooting?
I found that pressing the AF-on button did not stabilise the image as you showed when in manual focus Daniel. I am testing using a Sony FE 24-105 G and set up for back button focusing. Is there anything else I need to check?
I have nikon d800 and two camera sony a7 and nikon is the best but sony ilce-7 is the champion.Lens auto or lenses mount m42 ,manual focus this is champion of the world.
I can't find Initial Focus Magnification on my Sony A7. Is it possible to change? At the moment I have to press twice to zoom, I would like to have it with just one press.
Hi Daniel, Do you know a way to use single point focus (AF) during video without the issue that the camera starts to search for focus? I'm having the issue that in AF I can't keep the camera in the same focus point. I don't want to switch between MF and AF to just have a couple of seconds where the camera doesn't ghost
Thanks for covering the focus magnification options in detail, Daniel. ruclips.net/video/3Q-dHXaDH2w/видео.html Annoying that there is still no one button in and one button out option on Sony as there is on Fuji X. On Fuji X focus magnification is on the back wheel (press in, press out) with rotation changing the zoom. It's ingenious to have all the options available (changing zoom level) all the time but with single button in and out. Still the A7III set up is an improvement over the A6300 where there is no option to disable the initial 1x zoom at all: helpguide.sony.net/ilc/1540/v1/en/contents/TP0000808567.html
Correct i am not sure if you also follow the video/lists i do on the firmware requests but its on there. I fact i think the 'push-hold' FF and CROP mode could also work for that if implemented.
I've managed to borrow an A7 III to try. It turns out the focus magnification can be set up for a smooth workflow after jumping through a few hoops. First, focus magnification has to be set to immediately go to 5.9x and not just bring up the orange box. After that, one must choose a button (or two) to enable focus magnification. I've chosen the AEL button as it's the only one I can reach easily without taking my finger off the shutter (important, as you'll be using the shutter to turn off magnification). I mainly shoot manual exposure so AEL usually goes unused for me. After that it's essential to turn off "AF in Focus Mag". Once you do that, a half press of the shutter button will revert to 100% view. This allows a photographer to quickly toggle between 5.9x and 1x. If you need 10x magnification, a quick double tap will do that. Of course the AEL button will take you back to 1x but once you have the motor memory on AEL to zoom in and half press of shutter button to switch back to 1x, it's easier to always do it the same way as a toggle. This isn't quite as good as the Fuji wheel press in and out and turn wheel back and forth. On the other hand the Sony magnification second level is higher for really fine focus. This focus magnification workflow issue was the biggest barrier to using my NEX and A6300 for my Leica and OM lenses so I'll be testing the A7 III against the Fuji X-T3 to see if I prefer it for shooting manual lenses. On the Sony full frame my manual lenses are at least at their native format and with the pixels spread appropriately across all the glass. There will be more vignetting and dirty corners on the Takumar and OM lenses but not so much on the Leica lenses.
Agreed you are replying to old video if you check some of my last you will find that i (with a few others) now run a facebook group (a7iii/a7riii setup tips) where there is a list with many of these tips. but more important also that we have created a 'feature request list' for sony that will be discussed with them next week in japan for future updates and some of the points you talk about are on that llst to be improved. Hope this helps.
Its just a programmable button like any of the others, its listed there. See the video on making multiple backbuttons and you get the idea. If not ask again and ill explain more.
Hi, when you press the magnifier it goes to 6 and then 12 I have the A7iii and it the magnifier is scaled to 5.2 and 11.4 Is it different on this body or can I can it to match yours?

Thanks for the advice! One question: Can you use the magnifier with Sony Alpha cameras while you're already recording a video?
Yes on most models you can, but it does only go one level and is used to check focus. So for example you can use it with red as a focus color on the internal screen. The external and recording will not be zoomed (clean) so you won't see it on the recording.
@@scb2scb2 Thanks a lot for your answer!
Thanks for the video. The tip about the af-on being a stabilizer is really useful, I didn't know that.
The tutorial is really great! I have the camera for 10 months and many things I did not know yet. Thanks!

Great tip. I will be using it. Thx
Really appreciate activation of ibis trick on A7 3, was struggling with old telephoto lenses !
Lots of work must go into these videos. Much appreciated!
You are welcome, its my way of stress control so enjoy them..
Thanks. I learned a few things I didn't know. By the way, your English is great. All of this information in a non native language! Cheers.

Hi. Very helpfull. You can program one button to autofocus when you are in manual focus mode. It is usefull too. Thank you👍
When I zoom in and go to take the photo it always zooms back out and never takes the zoomed in photo I had. Any suggestions?
Also it never focused when I am close to the object trying to get a close up.

Hi Daniel, well I've even learn of the touch magnification feature lol. Great info Mate Keep it up .. :)
Another helpful video... Can I suggest that you give your videos more descriptive titles? It will help to find them in future when looking for a specific tip.
Sure, have any idea what words i should add to the keywords and maybe title?
How about "A7R iii - Zoom Magnification and Focus Peaking"?
I added a few words to that effect now thanks.
Thank you. I'm working with Lensbaby lenses and this was very helpful.
You the man Daniel keep up the great work.

KAA902 Not on my Sony A7rIII . You need to push once more the C1 button .
metphmet if you turn off "AF in Focus Mag." then half pressing the shutter will jump you back to the full screen
Love your videos, very informative stuff, thanks!

Do you know a way to half-press shutter without it automatically leaving magnify focus view? This is a huge problem for me, Olympus has this feature.

how did you customised your joystick to magnify like that?
I really wish they would have focus confirm
Was the a7iii IBIS activated while on the tripod? the frame was not still.
Thanks again for another helpful post !

Can you please share how i can add magnification button to joystick on switched to MF mode lens?
Its just a programmable button like any of the others, its listed there. See the video on making multiple backbuttons and you get the idea. If not ask again and ill explain more.
hi, how do you put that peak design to the sony a7riii camera hole?
Here you go : ruclips.net/video/Zy5kaF6w2X4/видео.html
Hi, when you press the magnifier it goes to 6 and then 12
I have the A7iii and it the magnifier is scaled to 5.2 and 11.4
Is it different on this body or can I can it to match yours?
No thats simply because of the 42 megapixels vs 24 megapixels the zoom points are not the same i assume sony did this for the best 'end result'.
May i suggest a better tripod head, the wobble is horrible and detrimental to your tutorial. Thanks!
Thanks
thanks, that was very usefu
good stuff thanks !
Thank you!
Heel bedankt!
Dutch?
Yes and clearly slow in replies sorry..
Make that the cat wise 😉
thanks
