    I just spent two full days going through all menus and learning how to configure the settings so they fit my needs. My custom buttons are very different from yours. In tab 2, 10/11, I set the EV control to be on the front dial. This lets me under-/overexpose while holding the camera in one hand.
    I have set the AEL button to Eye AF, so in case my focus point is small, I can force the camera to search for an eye instantly.
    My C2 is set to APS-C crop vs. Full Frame. With the A7RIV even the cropped version results in a 26 MP raw, for prints in 53x35cm at 300dpi.
    What I really like about Sony's cameras is that you can adjust the camera to your needs. They understood that a wildlife photographer needs different settings than a portrait, sports or wedding photographer for example.

    Okay I've just been shooting with my A7iii for almost 2 years and that "magic button" to switch automatically to high shutter mode was something I always wished I had, especially for my street photography style. I often have to switch between single shot fixed focus point and continuous AF fast shooting mode :D Ah god, thank you so much! Great vid

    Useful info, Toby, but I really thought that super button thing would be the Quick Menu that is seldom mentioned in YT vids (even by Sony reps). Press the display button until the LCD shows all shooting info, level indicator, and none of the current image. Then press the Fn button to activate (light up) any of the displayed settings. Those settings can now be navigated and changed - the “static” display becomes a Quick Menu. Try it. I understand that Sony made this feature to approximate how a DSLR would work - easier transition to mirrorless. I don’t think you can customize the items that appear in the Quick Menu screen, but there are lots of settings displayed. The Quick Menu might even make a good vid.

    • @sjsphotog
      @sjsphotog 5 лет назад +1

      Yeah that ALL ICONS menu screen is helpful and more like Canon's "Q" - Quick menu screen where you can change a bunch of stuff all on one screen. I dont use it that much either but yes its helpful if you do that. I just wish you didnt have to leave it in that display mode to actually change it as I usually have the minimal info or the screen with the histogram showing on when shooting.

    The customization that I'm most pleased with is having the down press on the rear wheel set to silent shooting. So you can press down to get to the setting, then down again to toggle it. A quick double tap to switch between the two.
    I also really like the ability to quickly recall shooting settings with just a button press. I only wish they would have included the ability to change auto iso minimum shutter speed, so we could go quickly from standard to faster or slower depending on the situation. This would be much more nifty than just setting an absolute value as in your demonstration. In stead, I have the auto iso min SS mapped to the C2 button for easy access.

    I use a lot of the same custom funtions as you and have the zoom magnifier assigned as well. In fact I thought that was going to be your secret powerful trick because it is one. The cross hair will let you focus inbetween two objects that are very close together with pinpoint accuracy. The only problem with it is switching to AF-S to do it. I do love your secret trick though and plan to set that up! I was using the Sigma 150-600 C which it wouldn't have worked on but just got my 200-600 in but haven't got to bring it out to test it yet. It is 111 heat index here and I just haven't felt the need to go out in it lol. Maybe this weekend I'll get up early for a sunrise and go test it out at the marsh.

    Center press to activate the zoom in playback mode, wheel to do in/out, and up down left right for sliding through image. All at a single thumb point, thats what I was looking for since NEX7. It never happened. It still feels complicated to move your thumb to the top button to activate the zoom, and come back down to the wheel.

      I would not recommend the Canon EOS R for wildlife - that focus speed is just not there. Consider the Canon 7D Mark II or the Canon 80D or wait just a bit - rumors of an 80D replacement later this month. Tamron 150-600 G2 is a great lens. Canon 100-400 another great option.

      Sony A7Riii would be great with the higher megapixels you'd want for landscapes. Now that the A7IV is out the A7iii is cheaper and still great at 42 megapixels. If you dont want to spend as much and still want great pix the A7iii (non-R version) is a great all around camera and best bang for your buck camera but its only 24 MP so you cant crop in as much or print as big. how big do you print your images ? if only for the internet it wont matter but if in a gallery for bigger than 16x20 then it matters

      @photorectoby 5 лет назад +1

      I dont use a screen protector.

    • @iComplainer
      @iComplainer 5 лет назад +1

      I opt for a tempered glass screen protector. They are strong and cheap and don't introduce any cloudy or fogginess like a plastic-based screen protector would. Under $10USD on Amazon. I have tried six brands but they are all identical so far- meaning they were all actually the same item regardless of the label was on the packaging. You could tell because they all suffered from the same flaw(s). Chief among those flaws is that the size is a little too perfect. It needs to be smaller by _just a hair_ to be better. That would allows for a small margin of error when installing and wouldnt decrease screen protection. This would also solve that particulates can get stuck right at the edge. I'd also love to see one with a 2.5D edge instead of the hard edge they all come with currently. The issue this hard edge causes is that whatever slight imperceivable oil or sweat you have on the tip of your nose happens to rest/touch precisely top left edge of the glass when you peek at the viewfinder even once, that oil begins to get vacuumed under the adhesive causing that portion of the adhesive to come unstuck and leaving a permanent, irreversible area of anti-adhesion which looks bad but also inhibits your view of that tiny part of the screen and just generally drive me (any probably you) mad.

    good info. So many possibilities to customize your camera how YOU want it with the Sony's. I love them. For my DOWN button on the wheel in the back for my a6500/a6000, I set my Custom Button to: DEACTIVATE MONITOR. This will turn off the back LCD screen and also all the text/icons surrounding the back screen and help you save your battery which is always an issue with these mirrorless camera's esp the ones with the smaller sized battery like on the a6xxx series APS-C cameras. when I need to turn it back on I just hit the down arrow on the wheel again to bring it back. Great feature when your walking around on the street and want to keep the camera on to be ready for a shot but dont want to waste all that battery if you are minutes in between each shot.

    • @iComplainer
      @iComplainer 5 лет назад +1

      This is not true always true. Especially in the case of the viewfinders on the a7III, a7RIII, a9, and a9II which take *more power* to run than the rear LCD. When the rear LCD goes black your viewfinder lights up in its place. So the above advice may be the case for some cameras (a6xxx series _maybe_) and should be taken with a grain of salt and tested to determine your own results.

    Sony A7RIII

  • @philindeblanc
    @philindeblanc 5 лет назад

    Yes, the customizability is great, but the other day shooting an event that I seldom do, I had both the A7RII and the 5DIII....
    Sony had to be turned off and back on at least twice, and the settings you had are not always stored, so you have to readjust, and When previewing 1:1 ....
    Boy is the Canon almost instant while the Sony LAAaaaag at each frame I zoom into. So what the files are larger, it should be addressed as a pro-sumer camera.
    Also, when using the hotshoe flash I find the Sony needs to be turned on and off for it to sync correctly, as the ISO and flash outputs are not consistent. On the Canon, it is just bang on with non of the issues I just described that the Sony has.
    Previewing is a pain, and so is the electronics.
    But this is a great video to show some customization prowess of the Sony, Which it HAS to have due to the sloppy menu system.
    I rather have a system I can jump into, vs a system I am so specialized at, that I cannot get out of , or have a large learning curve when I need to use another system. Canon Nikon make this a pretty easy to jump in system, as does Fuji, until you learn the hardware buttons a bit.
    I am less turned on with Sony max megapixel cramming and more excited in using a near flawless tool like the canon. I have joined meet ups and I see lots of Sony shooters, But I have also hired SOny second shooters and just watch them trying to adjust stuff on the camera while the action is happening. Its always some adjustment, which there is hardly any of on the Canon. This is just my general observation and there are of course exceptions on both sides. Having said that, I am not buying a Canon R, and will use what I have until Canon comes up with some hybrid VF pro 5D like system, or larger format. I would cap my megapixel needs at 50 WITH option to a COUPLE lower sizes, which Sony needs to add that in firmware of the A7RIV.
    Oh! i didn't mention that I have sent in the Sony for over $900 repairs of the card slot, the USB connection(Which I always used the cable tether support), a bit sloppy lens mount, but the camera is 100% AOK and still has electronics that just is not refined. I dont here reviewers talk at all about any electronic speed in preview improvements from the 2 to 3 or the 4. That might be a worth while video Toby!

      I haven't had any freeze-ups or major issues with my Sony a7Riii or a7Rii- other than the frozen shutter issue on the ii. I do agree on the lag when zooming to 1:1 is annoying and in general, there is this micro lag when adjusting settings but the resolution, the speed and the quality off that sensor just make me so happy. As a long-time Sony user I have no issues fiddling with the camera and can change settings just as quickly. But I agree that just because I love the camera and it works for me - doesn't mean it's the best camera for everyone.
