one time when i was 16 i was watching avatar and my mom walked in on yue's death scene. and she had seen the show too so she knew what was happening and when yue's spirit disappeared she turned to me and said "other 16 year olds are sacrificing themselves to save the moon spirit, what are you doing with your life?" and that will probably haunt me to my grave
I do think the costumes are too polished but overall I think they make sense. These are based off of real tribal wear and it LOOKS warm unlike shamalyans
Yes I was also going to comment something similar - traditional Siberian, Eastern and Southern Asian, and Northern Indigenous American peoples like the Inuit wear bright bold colours. Tibetan monks wear the exact same colours as Aang both in the animation and in this live action. They wear bold reds, bright marigold yellows, oranges. The Inuit peoples of Greenland have even more bright and colourful clothing traditionally, particularly for women, than what Sokka and Katara wear. There are also the peoples of Siberia to take into account, many of whom also dress not dissimilarly to what is represented here. The Fire Nation like Ozai for example, Japan, China, and many other Asian peoples wear and have worn varying shades of red. There are realistic clothing closures even, and there is even the small detail of clothing like the Kioshi Warriors taking off their shoes while inside, which is a common practice in many countries and peoples all across Asia. I will admit they do look a bit polished but I also don't find that to be a problem either. Personally I love that there is still a cartoon-y nature to the show. I don't think I want it to be exactly perfectly realistic. I really don't mind the idea of it being "cosplay"-like or otherwise not completely ultra realistic and I honestly find I think I prefer it that way. That is of course, just my personal opinion.
Yes the clothing looks real accurate to the clothes in the cartoon! Only problem is some of it looks too polished and new, as you said. The costume designers seem to forget this at times in various shows/movies. Can only hope that if it looks off throughout the entire season, they'll see the criticism and try to improve it for the next season.
I think the same and I want too add that the last live action had some "good" points but since it was bad overall nobody wants to make a new twist in any way or at least won't until they understand what the people want
I'd probably word the criticism differently. I don't think it's exactly that the outfits look too polished, they just look too new. It's perfectly reasonable for a tribe like that to have well-made, good looking clothing. The thing that throws off the eye is that it doesn't look like anybody's ever worn it before. In the image Danny had up at 6:45 when he was making his point about the outfits, it's pretty visible. The blue of Katara's outfit looks uniform, like none of it has had a chance to fade slightly from the vibrant blue it was originally coloured. The fur looks brand-new, the inside lining is pristine, and there aren't any other signs of wear either. At a certain point, the eye notices that kind of stuff about an outfit, and notices that it looks new. In the context of a show, even without consciously noticing it the audience can be taken out of their immersion by it.
Yes, loved that. She's treated too much like an adult characters by fans in the original show. I've seen people who thinks she's the older sister. The actress is pretty old though iirc so she might not look that young if it's renewed for season 2.
My problem with Zuko’s scar is that the eyebrow should not be there. Zuko only has one eyebrow in the show, and it’s reasonable to assume that if you get burned across the face around your eye your eyebrow hair will be burnt off. Eyebrows can be covered by cosmetics to blend in with the skin other projects have done it, so it wouldn’t be that big of an ask. At least to me.
Also very common for drag artists to temporarily glue their eyebrows and put makeup over them to make their own, usually slightly higher up more stylized! So I agree, not that big of an ask at all
I agree and I also don't like that his ear is untouched and not deformed by the scar in any way. In the original the scar was way bigger, actualy lookd very painful to get and was meant to be a horrific reminder to everyone that not even Ozai's family can disrespect him in any way. I get it, minimalism and all, but Zuko's scar, how big it was and where it was placed is what defined both him and his father to me. Ozai didn't care that he deformed his one and only son and Zuko, while slightly ashamed, didn't try to hide it in any way. The new one looks like he slept wrong and now has an inprint of something on his eye. It deasn't look pernament at all
Yeah i'm a bit bummed about his scar not being as big, but honestly that's a minor flaw. As long as the actor is good at portraying Zuko as well as the writing staying true to his character, i'm gonna be happy.
While it's probably an oversight, I see it as somewhat a necessity for portraying emotion. I often had referenced the two Cylcopes we got in Xmen. The first actor wore sunglasses while the 2nd actor wore much larger goggles. Because of this, the 2nd cyclops in the newer Xmen movies looked kinda dumbstruck and funny in serious scenes where all we saw was his mouth and lack of eyes. While the original cyclops in the first movies was much more easy to ready because of his eyebrows. This is my biggest explanation because animation is much easier to contort the face to display emotions like rage and embarrassment without the use of words. So they need the important feature of eyebrows to display what we can't easily see especially if half of zukos face shouldn't move well due to the burns
I think what strikes me about Katara and Sokka's costumes is that they look too new? Like they don't look like an article of clothing that's been worn more than once and that makes it look costumy, or at least contributes to the costuminess. Also, I agree that Zuko's bending looked like something out of a fan film and it would have been nice if they'd shown us a longer sequence of bending so that we could actually see if it was good. And the fact that they didn't makes me nervous, as if maybe they didn't have anything better than that
I think you hit the nail on the head about the costumes. There’s no ware and tare to make it look like something that the characters have been wearing for years.
Yeah the distressing on the costuming was lacking. But I think the actual builds are really really good. WaM was also clearly having budgeting issues cause the volume in all the hair accessories was a little too unnatural
The main issue i see a lot of people having (myself included) with Zukos scar, is that its not supposed to be just some mark on his face. Its supposed to be something that has actually deformed his face. If you look at Zukos scar in the animated version you can see: -Lines used to express an odd shape to the skin (maybe lumpy, maybe stretched, probably swollen) -A missing eyebrow -An inability to fully open his scarred eye The first two of which ive seen intermediate makeup artists do relatively well, and the third ive seen in several movies. The scar is meant to represent both Ozai's cruelty, and Zuko's entire journey. From wearing it as a reminder of his shame and his mission to capture Aang, to a reminder that his own father permanently damaged him in a way that would never fully heal. That little mark on Live action Zukos face just doesnt hold that weight. Everything else i agree with though. The wardrobes and appa and momo just kinda feel out of place, and Netflix needs to give us a reason to WANT to watch the show. Im hoping it does
yeah i agree. i was kinda thinking that netflix's thought process was: 1. this movie is gonna be better than shamalan's movie and thats all we need 2. there are already thousands of atla fans that will watch this anyway so all we need to give them is proof its better than the shamalan movie by showing good casting, and we'll make big moneys
Yeah, the scar is supposed to be so bad that Katara is willing to use her special healing water on it. This looks like he could just throw on some cover-up
While I completely agree the scar isn't as gnarly as it could and arguably should be. From a practical standpoint if they wanted to change the shape of his eye they would need at least a partial prosthetic which would mean way more hours in the make up chair everyday, which mean longer and/or more working days, which would mean more money. I know this seems like a stupid reason not to do it - and I would whole heartedly agree with you - this is how sets are run these days, studio executives will readily sacrifice quality for more money and it's really fucking disheartening. They could've shaved his eyebrow though.
I think the problem with Katara's and Sokka's outfits is that they're too clean looking. Like in the opening scene, their outfits are very bright and vibrant and are clean, making it to where they don't look like they have been outside in the snow.
Exactly. And they likely don’t have a ton of changes of clothes so it’d make more sense to see some patching down and worn out places where the color is faded and a couple of holes are forming.
Honestly, if they made these clothes exactly the way they were, and then put them through their paces as normal outside clothes, Wear them around, be outside with them, wash them a bunch over and over, it wouldn't look that bad,.
8:08 My problem with Zuko’s scar is that it doesn’t look like a scar. It looks like a birthmark. In the cartoon, Zuko’s scarred eye is small and very wrinkled- as if the skin around it has damaged the way it looks. In this live action, it just looks like he has red skin. The costume department seems to be lacking the budget for proper outfits and makeup.
Also in the show his eyebrow is gone due to the hair being burnt, and since the skin is permanently damaged, it never grows back. It made me so annoyed to see his eyebrow😭
@@Patch3dPho3nix Danny posts his videos flipped, so in the live action it’s actually on the correct side lol but here, yes. It’s technically on the wrong side
Actually the ages in the show are aang:12 katara:14 sokka:15 zuko:16 azula:14 mai:15 and ty lee problably 14 or less, so they actually aged up a lot of them, at least in the age of the actors, since the actors of zuko, azula and sokka (also suki) are all 20 more or less, the only one that remained faithful are aang and katara that at the time of the start of recording were 12 and 14 (I think that mai and ty lee are 17 or something)
Bro the fact that he’s 12 and has to take on the whole world and keep balance makes you actually care for the kid I’m glad they casted aang as a actual kid
Totally agree. I hate when the actors that are supposed to be playing kids are significantly older than their character. One there are plenty of adult/teens roles go find a different job and let child actors actually star in their own movies. Two it feel way more authentic and it’s easier to connect with the actor i think. Seeing some 15+ guy playing Aang wouldn’t have felt right in my opinion. He’s a child and that’s a really important part of the story. That goes for every character.
I agree with you on the arrow, realistically, a solid blue arrow would hurt like hell. I like the henna design better. I also think Zuko's scar looks too much like eyeshadow from that side picture, and also, is no one gonna mention that in the animated show, Zuko's ear is also scared, and was partially burnt off?
By the way, if anyone was wondering, the splitting the fire move that Danny can’t place was from the Zuko vs Zhao Agni Kai in episode 3. I’m pretty sure it’s Zhao’s move.
Zuko used it in Zuko vs Zhao round 1, but Zhao uses it as his signature move later. As pointed out on Overanalyzing Avatar, Zhao likely uses that move because Jong Jong(?) as his mentor used a fire wall as his signature move.
He also incorrectly interpreted the opening scene as the battle at the North Pole - it’s the siege of the Southern Air Temple. You can clearly see the big open area where Aang & friends rode air scooters, chose their bisons, etc. out in front.
@@ChristinaSobel Not to mention the very first shot of that bit is Sozin's Comet. To be fair to Danny though, not everyone is aware that the show is including scenes of the Air Nomad genocide.
I think Netflix tried really hard to separate their costumes from the first movie's, and because most people are used to that movie despite hating it, the transition was weird. In another aspect, Suki wasn’t in that movie, so Netflix had a bit more freedom to make her costume look less like a costume. Also, because she wasn’t in it, there’s no one to compare her to other than the original cartoon. Overall, there will always be two sides. Those who liked the costumes of the live action movie and those who want to see replicas of the costumes from the original show.
I think the costumes are pretty decent. When you look at the clothing from Inuit and Tibetan cultures there are plenty of vibrant colors used in traditional garb. And as for what they showed us. If you think about the scenes they included, it seems like they understand what the tone of avatar is supposed to be. They included the Air nation genocide, they included Aang’s encounter with Hei Bali’s forrest and Roku’s Island. So there will be spiritual stuff going on. And it seems they might focus on Aang’s struggle to accept his responsibility as the Avatar. They included the Kyoshi Warriors and Sokka interacting with them, that’s a key part of his character arc. They included the Agni Kai for Zuko’s arc.
i think the problem with the clothing isnt the design, its just the cleanliness it doesnt look worn, it looks new and thats why it looks like a cosplay tho. but I do personally like that aang looks 12 because a big part of the show was that it was cruel that a 12 y/o has to be forced to take all that on himself.
The one problem with an extended agni kai is that the whole reason Zuko was banished and burned was that he refused to fight his father. He wasnt banished for speaking out, thats why he fought the agni kai, he was banished for not fighting. Thus the extended agni kai would remove that idea
As a fan of the show, I think the costumes are pretty spot on, comparing them to what would've been worn by the actual cultures they're based on. Other than that, I'm happy they kept the original soundtrack and I'm excited to see some of the more minor characters like the traveling nomads, but I agree with most of what you said!
I think Danny's comment about costumes is more from the difficulties to translate animation into live-action... I can appreciate that the designers wanted to accurately depict the cartoon, but (to me) something about it looks.... off. I can tell that the art-design team cared and wanted to do a good job, but it doesn't look quite right.
I feel like it's never "good enough" for people. When it looks too real, its not good enough. When it's too colourful, it's not good enough... When they use the original story, it's not original enough and when they don't use the original story, its also wrong... There's always something that people don't like. And I'm not talking about ATLA alone. Just adaptations in general.
@@authorviviannehillary I agree, even though I don't mind adaptations. I enjoy them and I'm looking forward to this adaptation.. But adaptations are everywhere, they keep coming and they never look as good as the original... Which is almost impossible so idk why they even try. It's been a while since we've seen a good original story coming out... it's like they're out of ideas. 😮💨
Hey Danny love your videos and so far I'm agreeing with your takes (who knows if that'll change>:3) but I wanted to let you know as an indigenous person 'Eskimos' isn't really accepted anymore they prefer the term Inuít people/tribe because in Inukutut it means 'the people' instead of a name given to them by colonizers! Anyways lots of love💕
I get what you're saying that Netflix should show more, better stuff in the trailer, but this is just a teaser, which to me is very different from a trailer. This is meant to just be snapshots of the characters and whatnot, whereas a trailer would give us more story, acting, and ideally what you're looking for.
One of my biggest issues with live action comic/anime adaptations is that it's very VERY hard not to make the actors look like cosplayers. The costumes look like costumes instead of clothes, if you get what I mean. In my opinion, recreating original costumes with even more flair and detail makes them seem out of place in a "real" world. Not to mention people living their lives on the road would not look so crazy neat and clean, and some "style" additions would simply be immensely impractical. Edit: I see you mentioned that too lol, but yeah I totally agree.
i don't have any issues so far. I like aged up characters but I also like that they look the age they're supposed to be. I like that they tried to get as close to the show's costumes as possible. I like that the bending actually looks like bending. And I LOOOOOVEEEE that the original musical motifs are back. The soundtrack was the SOUL of this show
He just keep yapping abt a teaser trailer that's perfect in every way, and ofc the costumes are perfect too, and he's saying he prefers m.night costumes, do you think the creators of the show didn't know what they were doing when they picked the ethically correct costumes for their show, there's nothing good about the m.night costumes they looked like trash.
I think my main issue with zukos scar is the texture. There is simply not enough of it. Most burn scars have a lot of texture and are raised more than the unburned tissue around them. You can actually see this pretty well in the animated show. Zuko's scarred eye looks like it's almost swollen shut. Because of the raised tissue. And there are always lines indicating that its more textured than his regular skin. The netflix version does seem to have some texture. But its small. Which, especially for burns with fire is more unusual than bigger texture as far as im aware. It almost seems like some examples I've seen where people gt compression-wear after burn-injuries. And zuko 100% didn't get any of that. Additionally. Its too small. Its maybe a third of the size of animated Zukos scar. And i just don't understand that decision. With that decision they also kept his ear completely unharmed. Also, no fucking way this boys eyebrow is intact.
While I’m interested in seeing how this series performs, and the bending looks better then I thought, I genuinely believe that it is impossible to capture what made ATLA great without the animation.
A few people have pointed out that the word “Eskimo” is actually offensive and the proper term is “Inuit”. I’m sorry for using such an outdated term and wasn’t aware of its history. I’ll certainly be removing it from my vocabulary moving forward. For the people saying “it’s a teaser, not a trailer, you shouldn’t judge it so hard” - a teaser’s sole purpose is to be judged. Like…it’s a slice of the project that helps you make an informed decision on whether or not you’ll want to see the project. It exists to be judged 😅 also as a teaser it’s just pretty bland in my opinion. Ps. Sorry I got the battle at the beginning wrong - it’s borderline too dark to even see what’s going on so whoops
So... in terms of canonical ages in Avatar The Last Airbender: Aang - 12/112 (due to being frozen for 100 years) Katara - 14 Sokka - 15 Toph - 12 Zuko - 16 Azula - 14 This might explain why everyone looks so young, especially if they choose to stay true to their characters. in live-action the translation of this can be jarring.
Did anyone else pause the trailer at the Kyoshi Island scene when someone drops from the sky? It doesn't look like someone wearing Aang's clothes, it looks like Kyoshi took over Aang's body to help him fight like Roku did during the solstice.
For me, the thing that really made me like the trailer is that it still FEELS like avatar. And it's not something I ever thought I would get to see but for a brief moment I had the same feeling as the very first time I watched avatar when I was seven and found a DVD of it in a blockbuster and the same feeling when I watched the whole thing for the first time when I was 17.
I agree with the comment that for Sokka and Katara that their social circumstances doesn't gel with how pristine their clothes look. But also a little bit of advice? Best not to use the word "eskimo" and "Inuit" is correct. I did like hearing you talk about the lenses though! And I unfortunately don't remember the video, but there was a different video I watched some time back talking about how Netflix live action shows have a certain look to them because they're more designed to be played as background continuously. so if more than one shows after the other, it doesn't look different and draw attention to not looking the same?
The start was the air temples being attacked and the airbender genocide. The voiceover is Gyatso, Aang's first teacher. Most likely after Aang learns he is the Avatar.
The opening shot, has Monk Gyatso doing a voice over when Fire Lord Sozin attacked the airbenders. The comet at the opening is 100 years ago, airbenders are shown defending one of the air temples. Gyatso even says “the past”, Katara and Sokka are shown immediately after Gyatso says “the future”.
18:15 Pretty sure the trailer was done this way on purpose because it's just a teaser. Teaser trailers are typically short and focused on creating excitement and anticipation for an upcoming film or show. While they may include some dialogue, they often rely more heavily on music, visuals, and other elements to create a mood or atmosphere. I think you're shitting on this a bit too hard, considering it's not a complete trailer.
I agree with most of what you said, except for everything about the agni kai! Such a big part of Zuko’s character and how brutal that scene is in the cartoon comes from the fact that Zuko does nothing to protect himself. He completely surrenders to his father’s whims and it’s soul crushing. I’m all for a kick ass agni kai scene but go all out with Zuko and Zhou’s! You can’t have Zuko fight back against his father cause it just fundamentally changes so much!!
The problem i have with soka and katara outfits is they dont look worn in. Like they come from a struggling snowy village. Youre telling me a struggling village at the ends of the earth can have almost brand new CLEAN and almost pristine clothes? Thats why they look like its cosplay
The biggest issue I have with the costumes is that they are costumes. This isn't just netflix but production companies want to spend pennies on costume designers instead of really putting 5he necessary budget in. Their outfits COULD look amazing. If the design on Kataras parka was embroidered instead of clearly just a glued on design. If the fur looked real. If they had wear and tear. If that clasp looked like it was an actual closure instead of just there. Same with Aangs outfit. It could work. You just have to actually pay someone what it would cost to make it work. Also. Important note. I know it's really common to hear "eskimo" but they are called Inuit.
Het just to let you know, and this is not at all your fault, but the term “Eskimo” does not actually apply to any indigenous group or people, and is purely a racist term for a north Canadian/Alaskan native, again not calling you out or anything, I live in Alaska and I only learned this like last year
18:00 it's also just a teaser it's not a full trailer yet and they've been very secretive about everything until now. I can't wait to get a full trailer with dialogue and more bending but again it's a teaser not a trailer
I am cautiously optimistic about this series. I don't want to see mistakes and focus on that, I want to go in with a clean slate and have a look at their take. Plus the trailer looks awesome in my opinion and I feel like the other bendings, apart from fire, is purposefully left out the trailer to create anticipation.
I do like how the actors are similar ages to the characters. Especially Azula. I believe she was about 14 in the cartoon (something like that) and she actually LOOKS 14 here unlike in the show
I'm glad they're at least realizing that this series is better as just that, a TV SERIES, instead of a single movie that was trying to condense three seasons of well-written plot and well-timed character development into 90 minutes.
So I saw a costume artist do a breakdown of LOTR vs the Rings of Power and now i can't stop seeing this- which I think is what you're seeing in the netflix homogony. LOTR went really far out of their way in costuming to use natural dyes and era apropriate fabric for all of their costumes. So everything looks like it belongs and makes sense, so the audience can focus on other things, it fades into the background. *where it belongs*. In Rings of Power, which was made much more quickly, they don't bother to do this. All of the fabrics are cottons or polyester, and the dyes they use are bright rit dye colors that are simply unachievable in anything but the modern era. You can even see it in the armor especially- a lot of the chainmail is literally just yarn woven to *look* like it might be patterned mail but it's far too lose of a weave to be anywhere near believable. The one that bothered me most was you can see the mold casting lines on all the armor! and that feels Extremely weird in this setting. All of the Netflix adaptations have this problem as well, everything in the shows is made with these cheap fabrics, cheap dyes, and nothing feels like it belongs and nothing feels like it belongs, so it gives this vibe of trying to be a cartoon, or trying to be animated, when it really shouldn't be.
I do think you’re being a bit over critical on how little they showed. It’s a teaser trailer not an actual trailer. I think they that what they shown hasn’t truly captured any of the charm of what made the original amazing. I think if they leaned full into just keeping it all visual with some beautiful cinematic shots of Appa swimming/flying and just more of the whimsical light hearted stuff in the teaser trailer; then in the full trailer show all the dramatics and action of the show and even showing what would essentially be moments from “the storm” episode.
You gotta remember this is just a teaser, just showing us that it’s coming. They will most likely release better ones with more bending and story as the release date gets closer. They are probably still polishing up most of it.
There’s no way to please everyone. If Netflix did anything differently than the show people will complain it’s another Shamalan movie. So they went so far away from it now it’s too perfect it’s like cosplay. Also it’s just the teaser, most of the criticisms people have aren’t fair based on not even a full trailer
Lol. This video is hilarious. Claims he doesn't want to shit on the trailer just to shit on it. Then many of his criticisms are because he is clearly getting things wrong and stopping the video instead of watching the video. Ex. Just in the first shot of the trailer. Sees the comet in the sky and pans down. Oh that must be the northern water tribe like in the other movie. That doesn't look good. Ex2 doesn't like that zuko is putting up a fight? Since when is holding up your arms so you don't get as hurt when taking a beating putting up a fight? Come on. At least look like you are not trying to be bias.
3:25 What part of that film was faithful exactly? Faithful to cliffnotes of the show, maybe. Shamylan claims to be a fan of the show but I doubt he ever even watched it.
I think the costumes would look better, if they didnt look brand new and actually looked as though they were used and worn often. just add some wear and tear to clothes meant to always be worn in a cold snowy climate and theyd look more natural, the colors faded with snow and stuff probably permanently stuck to the fabric. Same with all the other places, make earth kingdom clothes worn and dirty, fire nation kind of singed or darkened. I guess Aang's clothes would look newer comparatively, but theyd still look broken in since he's had them so long, probably with some water and ice damage, windswept. That sort of thing. I love character design and considering how a design would work with specific clothes, just give it the look that makes sense with the story, and the abilities that exist within it.
"what are they doing?" an asian man with great respect for the show is trying to adapt it into live action as best as possible for real Asiatic and Indigenous peoples that's what they're doing. It's okay to not like things, but it's also ok to not shit on everything.
I definitely like the idea of zuko desprately blocking and ozai just emotionlessly launching attacks at him until he drops from exhaustion and it takes the pov of the last fireball as its zooming towards his eye with a single tear dropping from it. Could be a really dope scene
My guy has never seen a Teaser before. There's going to be at least two more full trailers that will show everything he's asking for. This is just how marketing works these days. The first teaser always just shows quick 2 second snippets.
On the costumes: I said they look either really bang on or kinda stupid and i think it’s like TOO faithful. I think I’m nervous cause none of the kids delivered lines in this trailer.
12:00, i personally feel that its him putting up a fight, just blocking (or at least trying to) the fire ozai throws at him that envelopes and burns his eye.
I agree that Aang's tattoo looked really cool/better in the Shamalan film. Being realistic, DRAWING that for every episode of the show would've been a massive pain for both the drawing aspect (because it would have to be replicated for each shot) and the animation aspect. It makes sense that the arrow in the animated show would've just been solid arrows. I'm def keeping an open mind for the live action show, but I'm still doing the side eye because of the Shamalan adaptation, though.
I think they made a good compromise with the tattoo. As we can see in the close ups and the shot of the glowing tattoo, It’s clear they added intricate details to the tattoo to make it more realistic but they also made the blue a prominent feature.
the tattoo is whaa na airbender gets when he masters airbending and real monks dont get scribbl lines with a bunch of unncessary deatail they get solid whitpe circles
@@Jdawg1234 I'm aware of what happens in the show. I've watched it more than enough times. This was my personal opinion. I liked the artistic liberty taken in the live action movie in regards to the tattoo. In the show itself, the fact that it was animated influences design choices. They have to look at what it would look like/what is feasible to draw repeatedly that they are willing to do. Animating what was done for Aang's tattoo in the live action film would've been an artistic nightmare.
Well, I think that the trailer did not have dialogues and many things because it is supposed to be a teaser xD but I understand about the clothes, I feel that it looks a little new. But well, I have hope JDJSJSJ
You summarize my thoughts up perfectly. I honestly wish they had just re-animated the original show to better quality then made a live action show. What I’m most disappointed about the live action trailer is the fact that they revealed the fire lord’s face. The fun part about his reveal in the original show is that he was a looming figure that hung around for two books, and then he was revealed in book 3, like oh he is a person and not just the idea of war and conquest.
So I have a question, is the first scene of the trailer supposed to be the annihilation of the air nomads? To me it looks like it is fire nation fighting air nomads.
I mean it's makes sense because remember in S1 EP3 the southern air temple when aang found Monk Gyatso skeleton surround by (Dead) firebender soldiers how do you think they died?
Sorry man other than zuko and the outfits i hard disagree with your points. Mainly for one thing dude, youre using a two minute TEASER trailer to get wayyyyy too much information for already biased expectations. you used one pieces trailer as a comparison and that one was the official one that came out like a month prior. go back and watch one piece teaser trailer and trust they showed little to anything as well.
I thinks it’s the fact that we’ve been sitting in a state of hope/fear limbo about this adaptation for YEARS and this did absolutely nothing to alleviate the fear or encourage that hope. This is the first thing they’ve given us but it didn’t give us anything.
Honestly, I think Netflix is just banking on on the millions who are waiting to binge it, joyfully or cautiously. Partly thanks to how successful the OG series was when netflix put it on, they know, regardless of end-quality and long-term opinions, the initial viewership is gonna be in high numbers. And that's all they want. Netflix cares more about short-term subscriber count, view count, and social media coverage to bring in new subscribers than series longevity and quality. And I'm guessing the idea of show success = viewer count over show quality & fan satisfaction, is why Mike & Brian also left. From what I'm seeing, I don't think Netflix was willing to invest in the budget the show needs to be fully polished and do its narrative scale justice. (Also, I suggest giving The Dragon Prince another try! Season 3 & 5 were great narrative standouts, for me!)
I've been hit and miss on your content in the past year but I'm THRILLED to see someone other than me treat this trailer with the same scrutiny I do. I'm optimistic, but HIGHLY skeptical!!! Especially given the costumes and whatever the F momo's designer was thinking also this trailer lacks 1 HUGE THING. Humor!
Wasn’t exactly scrutiny lol. He thought the first scene was the water tribe while a bunch of airbenders were in frame. How close was he watching exactly?
@@Cegg960 Is that REALLY your hang up here? You're going to dismiss everything he said, the very valid points he made, because he was mistaken about one small, split-second, dimly lit scene of the trailer?
Not really, He is going into watching the trailer wanting to hate it. That is just sad. A teaser is supposed to tease not show allot at all. He is just wrong on like every part except being skeptical@@jacobyullman5005
One criticism that I really agree with is the color grading. They are playing it safe by making everything kinda gritty and muddy. They are hiding behind the muted colors, either the lenses, the costumes, or the effects, but it's not good. Also, they have so much opportunity for a good trailer, but either they don't have the finished material to put one out, or they don't have the talent to put it together.
It's not the main trailer since it's only a teaser. Of course we won't be getting a lot since this is a sneak peek. We might have to wait for another trailer.
Hi Danny! Just letting you know that Esk*mo is a Slur… You would say Inuit (since they were the main inspiration for the Water Tribes) just letting you know!
Normally I love hearing Danny’s viewpoint, but I have never disagreed so vehemently with any of his takes as what he says in the latter half of this video. The fanbase is NOT “his generation.” It’s the Millennials who all watched the show as it aired every week in middle and high school, and Korra in college, who are now all in our thirties and can watch this with our kids (assuming it isn’t as irredeemable as the movie). I love that Gen Z loves Avatar. But it was our show first. That’s why the trailer shows all the things we used to discuss on forums each week as episodes aired. It’s why one of the most lingering establishing shots we get is from the episode that gave us both the Cabbage Merchant and “Bonzu Pippinpaddleopsicopolis III.” It nodded to all our ancient memes and in-jokes, all the things we obsessed over and made theories on while we waited for the next Friday. It’s brilliant marketing, really. This trailer knew exactly what to show and hold back to get Millennials hyped, even if we know better than to trust that a Netflix adaptation without Mike & Bryan won’t disappoint us.
So, youre literally discriminating that you want a head empty fanservice buffet, and like there's literally nothing wrong with that, but that doesn't mean an entire generation wants the same thing, sincerely a fellow millennial.
@@rumor3553 I didn’t say that’s what I want. I explained how it markets to Millenials USING fan service and in-references. Just because I think the marketing was extremely effective, doesn’t mean that’s what I expect from a live-action adaptation. I’m just explaining why they did what they did, since he says he doesn’t get it.
@ChristinaSobel All of his critiques were well thought out and accurate and didn't neg on the fan references, so I don't see how your comment functions as a rebuttal to them unless its the totality of what you want.
@@rumor3553 Because he didn’t appear to understand why the trailer focused on what it is, and as a result, he can’t tell who the target audience is supposed to be. Understandable, since he’s younger, but as someone who’s old enough to remember all of the discourse as the show released, it all makes perfect sense to me. I’m fully expecting the show to be a steaming pile of sweaty garbage if Mike & Bryan left, and nothing I’ve seen in the trailer makes me think otherwise. But the fact that they knew exactly what fan service to include DOES show who they’re targeting, and based on the discourse I’ve seen from Millennials and younger Gen Xers, they were largely successful. I can admire the hustle without buying into it.
For the Ozai beard, it think it works better in the animated version cause they drew him with a narrower, angular chin. So it kinda flowed into the beard with less space.
I understand what you mean about not showing too much in the trailer But you need to understand this is just a teaser Like literally..the trailer “teases” us and leaves us wanting more by basically showing the fans what the show will look like Obviously an official trailer will drop closer to the release date with those other factors shown
It looks good to me so far. All I need now is to see bending and stuff. Netflix is on a tear right now. I have hope for this. Hopefully Yuyu Hakusho continues the goods.
@@sophwitchproject let's just go back to One Piece, Blue Eye Samurai, Castlevania, Pluto, Captain Laserhawk. Even this Onimusha series and the Akuma-kun remake are quality productions. This little kid Unicorn thing my kids are watching is good for a Y7 project. Since we're talking animtion and anime live action remakes, just about everything new that has come out recently has been gorgeous and the stories are legit. Of course, not everyone has the same tastes but, if you're on a video talking about Avatar, I assume everyone here appreciates a beautiful animated project.
@@DannyMotta To each his own opinion; even in the original animated story, aside from maybe being a little wet, there no reason they should be all dirty. This is just not picking nonsense.
Genuinely I agree with like everything you said except the costumes stuff. From the perspective of someone who is studying costume design at this moment, these costumes are gorgeous. They look like they were made by someone who actually cares about the show. Other than that I’d probably agree with everything else you said.
one time when i was 16 i was watching avatar and my mom walked in on yue's death scene. and she had seen the show too so she knew what was happening and when yue's spirit disappeared she turned to me and said "other 16 year olds are sacrificing themselves to save the moon spirit, what are you doing with your life?" and that will probably haunt me to my grave
jesus christ lmao, your mom must’ve been in a bad mood
DAMN SHE CAME FOR BLOOOOOD WTF😭😭
HELPP
SHE RIGHT THOUGH-
That’s rough buddy.
Idk, I think the outfits in M.Night shaymalan's look way warmer
Azula *looks* like a fourteen old and ya know what I dig it, she looks like she’d bully full grown men for funsies
Azula actually IS fourteen in the show
@@nyahhugsi think that’s what they’re trying to say
Yes, loved that. She's treated too much like an adult characters by fans in the original show. I've seen people who thinks she's the older sister. The actress is pretty old though iirc so she might not look that young if it's renewed for season 2.

@@Arkayjiyathat’s true
My problem with Zuko’s scar is that the eyebrow should not be there. Zuko only has one eyebrow in the show, and it’s reasonable to assume that if you get burned across the face around your eye your eyebrow hair will be burnt off. Eyebrows can be covered by cosmetics to blend in with the skin other projects have done it, so it wouldn’t be that big of an ask. At least to me.
Hell. Drag queens makeup their eyebrows away every day! Easy peasy
If you look at Zukos scar in the animated version you can see:
-Lines used to express an odd shape to the skin (maybe lumpy, maybe stretched, probably swollen)
-A missing eyebrow
-An inability to fully open his scarred eye
The first two of which ive seen intermediate makeup artists do relatively well, and the third ive seen in several movies.
Im hoping it does
yeah i agree. i was kinda thinking that netflix's thought process was: 1. this movie is gonna be better than shamalan's movie and thats all we need 2. there are already thousands of atla fans that will watch this anyway so all we need to give them is proof its better than the shamalan movie by showing good casting, and we'll make big moneys
don't forget that it didn't just damage his face. it got his entire ear too. this scar didnt even touch it.
Yeah, the scar is supposed to be so bad that Katara is willing to use her special healing water on it. This looks like he could just throw on some cover-up
@@steffanhymer1285 Yes, this scar is less than 1/4 the size of the original, maybe less than 1/5
While I completely agree the scar isn't as gnarly as it could and arguably should be.
Definitely, the costumes would be much more amazing had they been weathered in more
Honestly, if they made these clothes exactly the way they were, and then put them through their paces as normal outside clothes, Wear them around, be outside with them, wash them a bunch over and over, it wouldn't look that bad,.
8:08
My problem with Zuko’s scar is that it doesn’t look like a scar.
It made me so annoyed to see his eyebrow😭
his scar is also on the wrong side I think, just like in parody episode play.
@@Patch3dPho3nix Danny posts his videos flipped, so in the live action it’s actually on the correct side lol but here, yes. It’s technically on the wrong side
I think the biggest problem with the costumes are that they look too new, no dirt, no wear.
It was under my belief Mai was also 14? The more you know ig 🤷♀️
Azula is 14
Bro the fact that he’s 12 and has to take on the whole world and keep balance makes you actually care for the kid I’m glad they casted aang as a actual kid
@ericanight8359 The actor playing Aang in the Netflix adaptation is 14 years old.
@@theechidna2916 bro its been 2 years since they filmed it he was 12 when they started filming …
FRR
and his skin should be like wrinkled and eyebrow gone
because thats what an actual scar would have 😞
By the way, if anyone was wondering, the splitting the fire move that Danny can’t place was from the Zuko vs Zhao Agni Kai in episode 3.
I LIKE HOW HE SAYS "IM NOT SHITTING ON IT OR ANYTHING" AND THEN PROCEEDS TO SHIT ON IT
I am such a fan of ATLA. I hope this movie isn’t a major bonfire like the last one was. I’m also I big fan of yours Danny!

It's a show with which we can assume the episodes will be an hour each
It's supposed to expand the world even more than the original story could.
@@addasonny Oh my bad. Thanks for letting me know
What do you mean " last movie"?
I agree
i think the problem with the clothing isnt the design, its just the cleanliness
it doesnt look worn, it looks new and thats why it looks like a cosplay tho.
but I do personally like that aang looks 12 because a big part of the show was that it was cruel that a 12 y/o has to be forced to take all that on himself.
The one problem with an extended agni kai is that the whole reason Zuko was banished and burned was that he refused to fight his father. He wasnt banished for speaking out, thats why he fought the agni kai, he was banished for not fighting. Thus the extended agni kai would remove that idea
This isn’t a trailer, it’s a teaser.
Remember that.

I think people are confused.
This is a TEASER.
We've seen maybe 1 minute of footage from a show that has 480 minutes of run time....
The soundtrack was the SOUL of this show
Why are you being so negative? This looks really good and bro it’s only the teaser we will get a full trailer next month.
Ikr?
He just keep yapping abt a teaser trailer that's perfect in every way, and ofc the costumes are perfect too, and he's saying he prefers m.night costumes, do you think the creators of the show didn't know what they were doing when they picked the ethically correct costumes for their show, there's nothing good about the m.night costumes they looked like trash.
It won't be good. Live action adaptations are always inferior
4:21 I think that is the attack on the air temple 100 years prior. The narrator did say “the past.“ I think I also see some Airbenders.
While I’m interested in seeing how this series performs, and the bending looks better then I thought, I genuinely believe that it is impossible to capture what made ATLA great without the animation.
Pretty sure that opening scene was the Airbender genocide
So... in terms of canonical ages in Avatar The Last Airbender:
Aang - 12/112 (due to being frozen for 100 years)
Katara - 14
Sokka - 15
Toph - 12
Zuko - 16
Azula - 14
This might explain why everyone looks so young, especially if they choose to stay true to their characters. in live-action the translation of this can be jarring.
I thought Azula was older than Zuko
I guess I was wrong
@@stereokuujiZuko is the older brother
As long as we don’t get 6 earth benders stomping around to slowly float one rock, I’ll be happy.
Also: Appa and Momo should have been puppets. Fight me about it.
18:00 - Dude...
Its not a Trailer
Its a Teaser
It’s a teaser trailer, the full trailer should have dialogue, acting and more bending
I do like how the actors are similar ages to the characters. Especially Azula. I believe she was about 14 in the cartoon (something like that) and she actually LOOKS 14 here unlike in the show
Eskimo is a questionable word to use. Refer to First Nations peoples and Inuit by their Nation's name when you can.
🙄
Questionable? It's downright racist. It comes from a Cree word that means "snow eater". But thank you for mentioning it.
@@ColdWizardMerlin I mean racism is judging someone based on their skin color or race so no.
@@masonguthrie1257Well, there's a large Inuit population where I live, and a lot of them DO consider "Eskimo" to be a racial slur.
@@ColdWizardMerlin it means "snow eater"? I thought I read somewhere that i meant "raw flesh eater"
I know it’s a small detail but eskimo is not the Inuits preferred name for future reference
Yeah, that was a little jarring to hear 😅
I believe they consider it a slur as well
@@chelseawolf100they do
@@chelseawolf100Moreso just insensitive/ignorant than a slur
Pretty sure that zuko fight scene with him splitting the fire is the agni kai between zuko and zhao from the first season
"This works, this girl looks fucking cruel" I think that's the ageism again Danny LOL
you lost me a 6:25 when you talk about liking the live action movie outfits more LMAO. The Netflix outfits are literally based off real tribal wear
I don't think Zuko is fighting back in that Agni Kai scene. I think he's just trying to protect his face but we'll see.
it make sense since it’s one side burn
@@LJE1821Looks like too much fire for the little scar he has in the teaser though
I thought the voice over was Monk Gyatso and I'm not really sure why but I'm going to role with it until proven otherwise.
Honestly, the dude is insufferable.
It's a trailer, with zero dialogue from the scenes. It's suppose to get EVERYONE excited about it. All audiences.
The opening is the Airnomad genocide. Why would airbenders be at the siege of the watertribe.
It's like 6 frames and the airbending we say I thought was happening from Aang
I 1000% agree with the the lens thing. It’s the one thing I’m concerned about. It makes the whole thing look so… animated? Almost like a Pixar movie
bro is trippen 😂
Pretty sure Azula is 14 in the show. We know that the considerably older Zuko is 16/17.
Yup
"what are they doing?" an asian man with great respect for the show is trying to adapt it into live action as best as possible for real Asiatic and Indigenous peoples that's what they're doing. It's okay to not like things, but it's also ok to not shit on everything.
He wants it his way
I definitely like the idea of zuko desprately blocking and ozai just emotionlessly launching attacks at him until he drops from exhaustion and it takes the pov of the last fireball as its zooming towards his eye with a single tear dropping from it.
Yeah exactly like they almost appear plastic because they’re designed to be in a cartoon.
@@SpicyBread. I remember them mentioning it but I don’t remember if they showed any of it. I will have to go back and watch.
@@aricjones6120 okay 👍
Yes , those are Airbenders fighting fire nation
@@aricjones6120They dont show any of it. Just aftermath.
In the show Azula wasn't 16 or 17. She is 14.
probably because it's a teaser, not the actual trailer that's why it didn't showcase a lot of things, from lines, shots and bendings.
Season 3 & 5 were great narrative standouts, for me!)
i think thy showed just enough for a TEASER trailer, the official trailer will probably include more
I've been hit and miss on your content in the past year but I'm THRILLED to see someone other than me treat this trailer with the same scrutiny I do. I'm optimistic, but HIGHLY skeptical!!! Especially given the costumes and whatever the F momo's designer was thinking
also this trailer lacks 1 HUGE THING.

Lacks humor? It's a freaking teaser, not the full trailer
How do you know what's authentic to the "made up nation" when you dont even know that Inuit people aren't called Eskimo? :/
It's not the main trailer since it's only a teaser. Of course we won't be getting a lot since this is a sneak peek. We might have to wait for another trailer.
One moment "please show os more bending"
2 SEK later,"uhhh let me yap about the bending". Broh
As a gen Z super fan of atla, I totally agree with you. This guy is just off the marks with his take on this trailer.
For the Ozai beard, it think it works better in the animated version cause they drew him with a narrower, angular chin. So it kinda flowed into the beard with less space.
I understand what you mean about not showing too much in the trailer
But you need to understand this is just a teaser
Like literally..the trailer “teases” us and leaves us wanting more by basically showing the fans what the show will look like
Obviously an official trailer will drop closer to the release date with those other factors shown
It looks good to me so far. All I need now is to see bending and stuff. Netflix is on a tear right now. I have hope for this. Hopefully Yuyu Hakusho continues the goods.
The new Netflix Show "I woke up a vampire" is all you need to see to know that they are not on a tear. That one hurt to watch
