The funny thing about TGCF is that I'm pretty sure that almost everyone who watched the show without any prior knowledge assumed that it would be a gay chinese soap opera, but instead got smacked with ghouls and stuff, lol

Xuan Ji (the ghost bride) is actually a lot more nuanced. He wasn’t such a huge douche as the dub makes him sound. He communicated to her at the beginning that he wasn’t looking for a committed relationship and she started to go obsessive. She broke her own legs to get his attention.
Yes, she was in the wrong too, but he’s just in general not respectful when it comes to women. Sure, he treats them well when in a relationship with them, but the book shows he doesn’t see women as people in their own right (except Ling Wen, because they’re friends). He gets embarrassed when a woman does anything heroic or saves him, it’s honestly frustrating to read.
"This guy's vanilla?!" is actually so goddamn funny considering the author confirmed that Hua Cheng is actually the best one in bed out of the three series she wrote
Not to mention Xie Lian is canonically covered in hickies and bite marks in one of the extra chapters. AAAnd begged to be treated like a cream pastry on their first night together in another extra. Mr. Chastity still might be the freakier of the two, but Hua Cheng is down for whatever Xie Lian wants.
Yes, Chinese censorship is genuinely infuriating to all donghua fans, because MXTX, the writer of Mo Dao (Grandmaster) and Tian Guan (Heaven Official's), actually put a lot of detail and effort into the relationships between the main characters, and the studios are forced to tone it down because of the censors.
I'm late but so far, in the second season, our favorite HuaLian seems to be so much closer than before 👀 I'm so glad that the company decided to feed the fans well

Interesting fact. San lang could mean "third son" but is also an affectionate way wives will address their husbands. I can't explain it fully without an essay but it's why Hua cheng prefers to be called San lang.
@@Xie_Huanas a chinese i will explain it. in ancient china, there are multiple names their wives could call their husbands, and some of names sort of overlap with polite and formal naming people would call other men. one would be 郎君, where it can be used to address typically a young and educated man/ a word for husband. here it’s sanlang (三郎) which in formal polite terms could be a way to address a young man who is the third child in his family, since 三 means third/ three. at the same time, it could also be a term the wife addresses her husband, where the husband is the third child of his family. so like if ur husband it’s the second (二) child, then u can call him 二郎 😂 hope u get it
"I feel like this guy deserves a little more severity than your local hooligan". Qi Rong is the 4th strongest ghost but everyone is like "Yeah that's just the average florida man, ignore him and he might go away"
That's all due to his personality lmao 😭😭😭 if he was a bit smarted maybe ppl would take him more seriously. Plus even tho he's like a wrath he's no macht for hua Cheng or black water lol
I’m just curious they never sent a group of martial gods out to kill him before, given his cannibalism. With the other kings, it’s because they’re too powerful and for the most part, chill. But we never see QR fight or do anything to show his power, so he just seems pathetic. I know he’s good at running away, but that’s it. If he’s powerful enough for it to be too dangerous to confront him(like the other kings), then we should be shown that. Instead, they just call him annoying.
@@nobodysdawn493 the novels up until tgcf aren't censored im pretty sure, its just tgcf thats censored and i think only in terms of nsfw content. they're still explicitly stated to be married and kiss and stuff

The second half is a murder mystery about a ripped apart corpse, the family drama between arranged marriages, war torn families, and more zombie-controlling magic.
@@jaginaiaelectrizs6341 indeed, especially since MDZS actually managed to finish their seasons and is probably made from a bigger budget and consistent quality. (Since BC May doesn't outsource all of their work like Haoliners does)
By the way, they do kiss in the books! But Season 1 is only halfway through Book 1. We will be having a Season 2 this year that should adapt the rest of Book 1. There is 5 books in total. Book 3 is when they finally start kissing. So even if the Donghua wasn't censored, the kissing wouldn't have happened this season. Funny enough, the kissing throughout the books is a major part of the plot, so I am so curious to see how the creators adapt the kissing in the Donghua!😂
It will probably get cut out, if it's made in China-that's usually what people mean by "heavily censored", because China is very 'no homo', so it all gets sanitized in a way that leaves it open to interpretation and denial.

For the end of the video when hes mad about them not kissing: In the novel over ch89 they kiss for a whole night, and hua cheng dosnt even remember it in the morning. Xie lang's lips are described as 'swollen', the alter where they had their 'fighting of toungs' was so messy it looked like a war happend. They also do kiss under water and dont stop kissing for like 7 good minutes. Also Grandmaster of demonic cultivation is very sensored as in the novel they make out a lot, its a 21+ book.
And a lot more kisses And the fact that after the kiss that Hua Cheng doesn’t remember the cultivator expose Xie Lian telling him that he has a lot of ghost qi in his lips
As someone who has read all three danmei (pretty boy gay novels) that Mo Xiang Tong Xiu wrote before there was ever an official english translation, I have never really internalized just how much gore, zombies and gross stuff she puts in her romance novels until now. I guess a lot of men could get behind those books if there weren't any romance at all.
I mean it depends on the men in question - with the exception of the time they all decided to vote for "The Case Studies of Vanitas" instead of "Sasaki and Miyano," the frat boys in my university's anime club keep voting for the gayest/most heavily queer coded things in the candidate pool more often than not when we vote on what to watch in club, completely dominated the highscore board of the "Are They Cannon or Not?" Kahoot I made for Valentines day, sang along with the "Yuri on Ice" theme song when it featured in a "Guess the Theme Song" challenge we did, and apparently one of them drove every one in their frat house insane because his Spotify list kept playing the "Ouran High School Host Club" theme song over and over again for some reason. So honestly, this seems right up their alley...
So. I have an update on this seeming up the frat boys' alley. At our club's Christmas party, we were going through our library to decide what to keep, what to sell, and what new series to buy for it. Most of the frat boys weren't able to attend because of studying or in one case a study abroad program, so only one of them was there, and as it turns out, he's currently watching this show...here's the slightly long saga of how this came up in conversation: Me, waving around a couple volumes of manga: "Anyone interested in Fruits' Basket, or should we go ahead and sell these?" O, a local lesbian: "Nah, the characters in that one look like genetically engineered twinks that someone performed expiraments on..." Me: "...I have never heard anyone describe Fruits Basket that way, but for what it's worth, if you'd like to read a manga with a gay guy that actually DID get expiramented on, we'll be adding No.6 to the library soon - it's really good - one of my all time favorites." O: "I trust your judgement, so I'll try it, thanks for the reccomendation." T, my male co-president: "Is that the one we placed bets on how long it'd take your mom to figure out it was BL when she was reading it?" Me: "No, that was Heaven Official's Blessing-" O: "Oh! I'm watching that one..." X, the one frat boy present: "Me too - it's pretty good!" O: "How far along are you?" X: "A little past the halfway point." Me: "Have you guys met Windmaster yet?" O and X immediately started gushing about how great Windmaster is and we discussed the series a bit Me: "Just to clarify though, while I have read the light novels, I haven't watched the anime yet - though I did watch a guy react to it on RUclips and get increasingly frustrated by the lack of kissing..." X, nodding sagely: "Understandable. The lack of kissing IS frustrating..."
@@Amy_the_Lizardlmfao as someone who loves Fruits Basket, it's the first time I'm hearing that description and it's hilarious. I loved how outraged he was about Xie Lian’s stew of poison being kicked over by a soldier during the Banyue arc! I started yelling at the screen that he was doing everybody a favor by kicking that nightmare broth over.😂
"this guy must be some kind of ghost king or what" That was so funny to me for no reason, I mean you werent wrong but getting it on the nail like that sounded so funny

Ok, i just watched season two that came out, or at least up to episode 10, and found out that the jar the girls in is in fact CANONICALLY, a pickle jar
TGCF has insanely good world building in my opinion. One might think the back stories are all only part of some side character's story to make one specific arc more interesting. I think however, that finding out how every detail is connected to the main characters and their stories is the real gem of this story. And after you think you found out all the information regarding one character, the author hits you with bigger twist. The really hard part is remembering all the little details and explanations the characters throw at you throughout the story, which will become important later on in the journey.
The time he almost got trampled to death…doesn’t even rank in the top ten worst things to happen to Xie Lian in the last 800 years. He has a full proof plan to deal with the trauma though, denial 😁👍🏻 1:12:36
As someone who knows what you're talking about, I shouldn't find this funny but I couldn't help laugh. It reminded me of when the "reverend of empty words" arc... Wind master and Hua Cheng's reactions to Xie Lian's experience with it. It lightens the mood a little to see that Xie Lian finds humour in his past too.
i love how when he's talking about the censorship after the face in the ground part he says it's the only bit of egregious censorship so far when he still thinks that xuan ji just beheaded that guy rather than what they actually censored which was her literally pulling his skull out of his head
I'm in LOVE with how they're written. Their relatationship is extremely beautiful. Also, I love how in the donghua, the special ep shows a small inner voice of Hua Cheng, at the "promise" part (1:23:51). It shows perfectly how in love he is with Xie Lian and the other way around, of course.
also yeah. people list mo dao zu shi and tian guan ci fu as mostly gay, and it basically is. but really it should be acknowledged how good it is at everything else. like seriously, it's not just BL. it's nice to see representation, but also very happy to see it in actual good show, with plot that is deeper than being just BL.

Yea China is king of the almost gay shows. I would say its queerbaiting but honestly its more like the creators are trying to get as much gay representation in a country where it is not allowed. Many of the weird phrases they use are like translations of phrases that allude to being gay. Its filled will gay things but they have to be subtle.

I was introduced to Heaven Official's Blessing via the manhua, because I thought it looked gorgeous. I read it all on BiliBili and then learned that it's adapted from a novel, found all 5 english translated books, made my mom buy them for me without letting her see the cover on the 4th and read them in less than a week. I found the entire novel online and read the remaining 70+ main story chapters in 3 days. Only after that did I get to actually watching the donghua and while loving it, it did also feel very different from the novel, as many details (because it's an adaptation, so duh) were left untold. I believe I would've been pretty lost without knowing the entire story to it and the explanations of the chinese mythology from the dictionary the books have on the terms used in the story. I still fell in love with everything I consumed and cannot wait for season 2 of the donghua, the live action, more gorgeous manhua chapters and official art! I LOVE THIS FANDOM TOO MUCH!!!!!!😭😭😭❤❤❤❤
I bought them in Nook-book form, and for some reason volume 4 just HAD to glitch out, so I had to get my mom to mess with a bit to get it working properly (she's better at dealing with Nook glitches than me.) Her only commentary on the cover was: "He's smooching!" but it was still kinda awkward...
I loved this! Danny, please do MDZS at some point - but also be prepared because there are no smooches in MDZS as well. Also S2 of Heaven Official's Blessing is airing now!!
Danny watch The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, it will definitely be one of your favorites of all time. Action, zombies, mystery, awesome graphics, amazing story, and a cast of characters you will absolutely love. And the best thing? It's finished, so you won't be left hanging. The donghua is complete.
DANNY YOU’RE A FLIPPING GENUIS! You’ve been making some solid predictions throughout and some of them won’t surface until after book 3! Also, I can’t wait to see how you feel about Feng Xin and Mu Qing after finding out how absolutely vital and complicated their characters are since you said “oh don’t get jealous, you’re like barely characters”, when they asked Hua Cheng who he was. You were SOOOOO wrong about that one, boy! 😂
I think the novel and, hopefully, the donghua work well together. In a way, Heaven Official's Blessing's donghua is similar to how Mo Dao Zu Shi's donghua was done with the audience that already read the book in mind, so it feels really fast for the uninitiated. That being said, it's a gorgeous donghua to watch for those of us who read the books. The books get to take their time with the lore, the characters, and the world.
Well, for me, the novel is definitely superior when it comes to Heaven Official's Blessing. But, when it comes to Mo Dao Zu Shi (The grandmaster of demonic cultivation) I prefer the anime more
For plot twist I prefer The Untamed version, but for showing how incredibly powerfull charactors are definately the donghua!😆 (It's a little to obvious who the big bad is in the donghau)😌😁
Sidenote: later in the series Xie Lian literally is dealing with the same exact issues as Geralt in The Witcher. (The botchling). Also he likes weapons just as much as Geralt. There is not nearly as much stopping The Witcher and Heaven Official’s Blessing from existing in the same universe as there should be.
Why is this the funniest review video I’ve ever seen LMAO I’m laughing SO hard, you aren’t even wrong about any of what you’re saying. 😂 I’m a huge fan of MXTX’s work so seeing this review is wonderful!! I highly recommend reading the books for Heaven Official’s Blessing, Grandmaster, and Scum Villain! They are amazingly written, my favorite books! Though there’s a lot so they’re very time consuming, they will make your emotions go insane. They’re beautiful, romantic, loving, devastating, tragic (not the mcs), grotesque, hilarious, well written … they’re just so, so good.
Oh and the shows are heaaaavily censored. The books contain far more explicit material, gore, and gay panic all around lol. If you do decide to read Grandmaster after watching it do not expect the plots to be the same lol. Heaven Official’s stays pretty close to the booms but Grandmaster gets kind of wack in the show.
It's amazing how many times I answered, "YES!" to your joke predictions! MXTX universes are crazypants! I'm another person who got dragged in by The Untamed, consumed every possible iteration of THAT story, read Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, and now I'm reading the novels behind this donghua. Her imagination is incredible. All this great fighting, monsters, gods, etc AND pretty boys in love? Yes please! 😂
I think this is the 6th or 7th time I watched this reaction, it’s pretty much become my comfort thing to watch. Really excited to see what Danny thinks about season 2!
Season 2. Danny. There is a new season 2 on crunchy roll- completed season 2 most are even dubbed now. Also, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation has significantly more zombies and monsters 🎉
Help, did you read the novel? Cause I randomly stumbled upon it ages ago, read it all in two days without knowing anything about Chinese web novels and now I don't know if I fever dreamed the... kinky stuff in the last chapters. And the homophobic remarks?? And nobody seems to be talking about it? Am I going crazy or did they retranslate that? 🥹
@@livinglife5295 I agree the romance is honestly the main sub plot in HOB and I love that. I like the main storyline and plot in MDZS better but it does fall short at romance.
I love how his biggest gripe is that the characters are not fleshed out enough and yet this is probably the most fleshed out one by this author the animation just cuts so much to move the story along faster. Granted a lot of that fleshing out comes with the story progression but dear God do we get a backstory on almost everybody.
I'm obsessed with this channel. I watched this show before reading the novel. We were a really small fandom, but now it's a big thing. I need reaction videos for Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation and Link Click Season 2.
1:12:33 "no one can rememeber everything but the time you got stepped to death should be in a higher rank" oh boy, you are not ready for the next seasons when they adapt book 4
There is so much lore missing in this just from watching the show. The sword that got broken used to be Xian Lian's that he pawned. Then seeing it again causes it to be broken. In the book, he is pained from seeing this. Even better, this is season 1 (book 1) out of maybe 6-7 seasons. So much hidden lore that isn't even possibly grasped. However, this is the commentary on the show I never knew was missing. I love Chinese soap operas. Now I'm watching each commentary by Danny about Chinese shows.
Actually the first season is pretty much the same as the first book (there are 8 in total). Right now ss2 is airing and it's SO good. It's true that in the first season/book we don't get much information about the main characters (if you haven't read all the books) but that's because the plot isn't about them at this point yet but rather side characters. However that WILL change. The plot and storyline in MXTX's books (the author of TGCF, MDZS and SVSSS) are extremely complex on so many different levels. Her world building is fabulous and the way she builds her characters is just mind blowing. The thing about her writing is that when you first read or watch it you don't notice the foreshadowing details that are about to come. However when you rewatch/reread it, the hints and the way certain things are phrased are so obvious... All I can say without spoiling is that there'll be SO much pain and suffering you aren't prepared for... Maybe you could react to ss2?
If you want a pure innocent one that ends in a kiss, Sasaki and Miyano would be a great one for you to watch. If you want one that's a little more raunchy while still having a good story, Dakaichi would be another one I'd recommend. Definitely more than kissing involved
I watched Heaven Official's Blessing and that lead me to read the books (which are great btw and I absolutely love the mythology and world building) And while I'm here, just gonna toss a "please react to Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation" your way. There's plenty of zombies, some badass violence and cuteness in that gem of a series. Enjoyed these videos, keep up the good work. 😊
Danny, you've GOTTA check out season 2! It's being released every Wednesday. Also, the Donghua is awesome but the books are ten times better, so I definitely recommend reading them. Another thing, they actually smooch in book 3 and make out in book 4, so I think you'd like that.
The book is a masterpiece, truly one of a kind, but it's also soooo long that you would need like at least 10 seasons to tell the entire story. Yes it is censored because China, but for their standards the censorship was basically non-existent for now. Grandmaster of demonic cultivation was way more censored. They don't kiss because their first kiss happens way later in the series, I would think S4 of the donghua if they make it that far ahahaha I think for many of the characters you really need to wait for the development of the story, without the flashbacks to Xie Lian's past huge parts are just missing. The bodyguards also will get more fleshed out in the future. Same with the two women. This was basically only the set up. S2 is actually coming out this October! Please support it, you all. It's the first donghua to come back after the ban in China, so they really need our help. They were the only ones keeping us updated when the other studios went radio silent. Bilibili kept going with the second season even when it seemed it would never be able to come out in China and Xie Lian VA was even arrested. They had it rough during the last 3 years, so please just tune in for the new season, it's gonna be great, surely even more exciting than the first
Also please always remember these studios need to be very careful. When S1 came out it was 2020 and now the situation in media in China has totally changed and not for the better. Any error or misstep can be used against not only them but doom the entire genre. Last year the audio drama for this same book was taken down after just one episode and censorship got stricter. Now the audio drama came back, but it shows that they will take anything as an excuse to target the genre
@@specificsoup Xie Lian's VA was arrested for other reasons, I think fraud or tax evasion, something to do with money. Bilibili replaced him and he isn't in S2. However from what I remember he was actually let go and didn't go to prison, but I'm not sure. It wasn't a major scandal, but Bilibili changing the VA actually told us they still wanted to release S2 and they did

There were multiple plot threads and characters set up in this season that later gets expanded upon and tied up super neatly in the original books (such as xuan ji, she plays a role later, and the boy with the bandages, and more) When season 2 comes out you should definitely watch it or read the books.

You are so right, like, just know I just came to termes of how much actual gore is in her novels
@@Amy_the_Lizardthis is fascinating to me
So. I have an update on this seeming up the frat boys' alley. At our club's Christmas party, we were going through our library to decide what to keep, what to sell, and what new series to buy for it. Most of the frat boys weren't able to attend because of studying or in one case a study abroad program, so only one of them was there, and as it turns out, he's currently watching this show...here's the slightly long saga of how this came up in conversation:
Me, waving around a couple volumes of manga: "Anyone interested in Fruits' Basket, or should we go ahead and sell these?"
O, a local lesbian: "Nah, the characters in that one look like genetically engineered twinks that someone performed expiraments on..."
Me: "...I have never heard anyone describe Fruits Basket that way, but for what it's worth, if you'd like to read a manga with a gay guy that actually DID get expiramented on, we'll be adding No.6 to the library soon - it's really good - one of my all time favorites."
O: "I trust your judgement, so I'll try it, thanks for the reccomendation."
T, my male co-president: "Is that the one we placed bets on how long it'd take your mom to figure out it was BL when she was reading it?"
Me: "No, that was Heaven Official's Blessing-"
O: "Oh! I'm watching that one..."
X, the one frat boy present: "Me too - it's pretty good!"
O: "How far along are you?"
X: "A little past the halfway point."
Me: "Have you guys met Windmaster yet?"
O and X immediately started gushing about how great Windmaster is and we discussed the series a bit
Me: "Just to clarify though, while I have read the light novels, I haven't watched the anime yet - though I did watch a guy react to it on RUclips and get increasingly frustrated by the lack of kissing..."
X, nodding sagely: "Understandable. The lack of kissing IS frustrating..."

“This guy must be some kinda ghost king or something” lmao 38:03

They don't kiss because their first kiss happens way later in the series, I would think S4 of the donghua if they make it that far ahahaha
I think for many of the characters you really need to wait for the development of the story, without the flashbacks to Xie Lian's past huge parts are just missing.
Wait Xie Lian VA was arrested? Because of the show or for other reasons?
@@specificsoup Xie Lian's VA was arrested for other reasons, I think fraud or tax evasion, something to do with money. Bilibili replaced him and he isn't in S2. However from what I remember he was actually let go and didn't go to prison, but I'm not sure. It wasn't a major scandal, but Bilibili changing the VA actually told us they still wanted to release S2 and they did
@@lavistelle6031 I take it you’re talking about the Chinese VA?
@@Levsa399 Yes of course
This show and Danny's reaction are so weirdly calming, I've been listening to it in the background as a comfort show.
TGCF has spiraled me into so many so so so many AMAZING good novels and donghua of this category. I love it.
I pray he reacts to season 2!!
Same! I heard he is, but I don’t know if it’s true. If he is, he’s probably waiting for it all to be dubbed.
@@Levsa399 let’s pray that’s the case because the last episode is coming out I believe next week and there’s only like four episodes that need to be dubbed for season two
@@Planetobyall episodes are dubbed now!! I hope he reacts
He did. He loved ep 1-2
@@amandategner1314 Yes! And now I’m eagerly awaiting his reaction to 3 and 4!
30:42 I'M SO HAPPY YOU SKIPPED THAT PART THANK YOU SO MUCH
I think everyone agrees with the novel is better. Donghua is fine but there's a lot of things that you can't get at the fist time when u see the animation
fr, i watched the donghua first and i couldn’t rlly catch up with the names and plot until i bought the novel
its made with the audience that read the book in mind. get over it, reading isnt scary and would take only a week or so ☠️
i watched it before reading the books and it was perfectly fine, maybe youre just a little slow ❤
@@palemeadows Lmao why are you so rude it's not a big deal😂
The novel is too damn long, with sentences that are unnecessarily damn wordy

@@PrinceJayMoriarty THERE'S A JAPANESE DUB?????
@@onion9967 yep but only 2 seasons 😭 the Chinese dub has 3 and I don’t think it’s English dubbed either
@@PrinceJayMoriarty where to watch Japanese dub??
THANK YOUUUUUU!!! Still my favorite react of yours that I already rewatched once. (in case u were curious bsd, this and just the fact you like sk8 those are my fav things) Perfect I needed something to watch at work today. Thank you again for reacting to this series, please don't feel pressured by mdzs comments.
Danny being a shockingly good singer and improving lyrics from once I was 7 years old is so great.
Now that you point it out - can confirm the being buried under a mountain as a form of punishment is common knowledge in Chinese folklore 😂
i read the first volume of the manhua for grandmaster of demonic cultivation and i kind of found it confusing, just like i did with the manhua for heaven official's blessing and its donghua. but now that i've started reading the danmei/novels for grandmaster of demonic cultivation, it's definitely cleared up a lot of things within the first few pages so i suggest reading the novel for heaven official's blessing and grandmaster of demonic cultivation when you have the time!
The adaptations are more like eye candy for the people who've already read the books
Same, when I saw the dougha and manga and series (mdzs case) of mdzs and tgcf I was so confused but still liked, i read the novel and understand everything, and now I understand the donghua and manwha, is more pleasing seening it when you understand it
There were multiple plot threads and characters set up in this season that later gets expanded upon and tied up super neatly in the original books (such as xuan ji, she plays a role later, and the boy with the bandages, and more) When season 2 comes out you should definitely watch it or read the books.
Still one of my favorite series of reactions! High key hoping you watch mdzs but no pressure, you do what makes you happy
@16:52 : Thanks, that sums up about 98% of the plot right there.
They don't kiss until Xie Lian drowns
Almost drowns. Almost.
It's really weird and refreshing having a seemingly str8 guy reacting to MXTX's work. There's more focus on the actual plot and eccentricities that usually get overshadowed with "aaaaaaa they're holding handssss"
Hua Cheng- " what if my real face was hideous"
literally every one wishing they were that hot 🥲
If you like zombies, you'll love Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation.
SEASON TWO'S OUT MY MAN
