I did not follow the instructions and have the same issue but when I called Fass 13:21 the young technician had never run into this problem, and he could not explain what has changed since I put on the pump on. This video solved my problem as soon as I put the splitter fuse on it started working fine. Thank you for this video.
I'm a diesel mechanic and this was very interesting find. I'll keep that in mind had a buddy that had the same issue and I had to put a time delay relay on his to remedy the issue!!! scratched my head for minute trying to figure it out myself
That was the other fix that I thought about doing also before I found out I could just move the fuse. I would have had to order one online and this guy needed the truck back ASAP. Thanks for watching!
I hope you read this comment. I have to tell you saved me. I was traveling from my home and south central Alaska through the Yukon, and the first time the hot start issue happened was at the Canadian border, and I was stuck right at the border crossing it happened at every fuel stop from then on fortunately I have star link on this rig And I was searching for videos and couldn’t find any cohesive answers. I found your video day before yesterday and in 30 seconds swap the fuse to the radio. 5 hot starts later no issues I wish I could help you make your video make millions. Thank you
Instantly fixed it. Bought the truck with the issue and sure enough it was plugged into the engine fuse like you said. I switched it to radio and works perfectly. Thanks for helping us certified you tube mechanics 😂
wow iv tryed every thing with this truck i never had this problem till i fixed my tappit cover and fule filter leak it makes sence the filter was letting it leak down so it all ways started and i hard wired it to a different wire so turn the key on pump was on so now ill try the radio fuse thank you so much
On my 01. I have constant power/ ground from battery to fass and then the fass is pluged into the factory connector for switched power. Are you cutting the connector thay plugs into the factory lift pump connector off and wiring it to switched power in cab?
I had a hard start issue with my 00 Dodge, only when the engine was hot, I replaced the ECM, thinking it was my problem, because prior to that, I've already replaced the Vp44, and installed a fass fuel pump.... the solution to my problem was the starter, it wasn't turning the engine fast enough, although it seemed fine to me, once I put a new starter, it's been starting great for the last 3 years, I got the idea about the starter by reading on the cummins diesel forms, and running out off parts to change on the thing 😂....
Did the lift pumps before the fass stay on in the run position? There was an ecm update, I think quite a bit of years ago like 10-13 years, that change the pump just run the lift pump for just a split second when the key is turned to the run position. I don't have experience with fass or airdog types other than the fass ddrp and fleece powerflo that uses the factory lift pump connection so it hasn't been an issue. I realize you got it fixed, but I figured I would mention it for future reference if it can help.
The trucks that I have owned have always turned on for a few seconds and built pressure before starting. Fass systems bypass that side of the harness with their own and that makes them run continuously.
If I remember right the pump just runs. I don’t think this system had a pressure switch to shut it off. It’s not going to hurt it to run. It’ll just return the fuel.
I moved that over to the fuse and it somewhat helped, but it still took 2-1/2 to 3 seconds to finally fire. Granted this was my first hot start since moving that so I’m not 100% sure, I’ll have to drive the truck more and see if it will still give me a really long crank/no start. Could that also possibly be a starter going out though bc I have had some slight symptoms of a slowly dying starter but it still starts the truck and I’ve always kinda figured the hard start with the pump overpressurising not necessarily the starters fault. So I have no idea what a slowish starter will do to these trucks.
A dying starter can definitely make it seem like a hot start. Those trucks generally turn over fast when batteries and starter are in good working order.
It could also be that you actually have an issue with the vp44 too. Blue chip diesel has a pretty good diagnostic chart you can run through to test out your issue if this fix doesn’t work for you.
I have the hard start issue to a T.. 05 dodge 350 5.9 all stock. Think this is the problem as well? Been to dealer numerous times along with certified dodge mechanics and has never been resolved for yrs. Starting cold no problems, once up to temperature won’t start.
Is the wire that supplies the radio circuit heavy enough to handle the load of both the radio and the lift pump? I would think the addition of the lift pump to that circuit would increase the amp draw considerably..
Yes it is. Fass actually has you tap into the ECM fuse on the install which is the same size as the radio. Its not actually supplying power to the pump. Its supplying key on voltage signal to the relay to close the relay and suppy the pump with the 12 volts to run. Haven't heard from the customer so I assume its working perfect.
@@Spoolinauto_fab oh duh…signal wire. Good call. Carry on I’m just on the other side of the Oklahoma line from you, holler if you ever get down this way. I am in the same line of work as yourself, hats off to you for making time to do videos, I know I’d never be able to keep up with it. But look forward to watching what else you get into. Take care
Will do, man. Finding time to do videos and keep up with the actual work isn’t easy and that kinda why my videos are so spaced out. Gotta focus on what keeps the bills paid until the channel takes off. What part of Oklahoma are you in?
I’ve seen this a lot on fass/air dogs because they wire to turn on with key on instead of the factory way of 2sec with key one then 30 sec with bump of engine , then finally on 100% when engine runs
I don’t have the fass or air dog pump, mines the lift pump that was put in the tank once dodge found out the one mounted on the block didn’t work. Would this still work for that pump. (Not sure what the pump is called, I’m not a mechanic, sorry if this is confusing).
@@TannerHughes-s6x no this only works for the fass or air dog system. If you have a hard start issue with stock you may have a weak lift pump or the vp might be getting weak.
It’s weird because I’m having the same problems. I can cold start it no problem at all. But once it gets to operating temp it won’t ever start just sit there and turn over. I tried the method of cooling off the vp pump but still no luck.
@@TannerHughes-s6x I’d say your vp is on its way out but if you go to Blue chip diesels website he’s got a list of diagnostics steps for your symptoms. Vp44 is all that company does I believe and I recommend them.
I went ahead and wired up my lift pump to the radio like you did and it actually worked with this pump. I drove it about 20 miles down the road came back killed it and it fired right up. Just figured I’d comment that in case anyone else wants to try it. I’m gonna leave it like this for a little bit and see how it does.
The injection pump needs 0 psi to start. So I moved the pump trigger wire from the 10amp ECM fuse to the radio 10amp fuse so when He is cranking it the pump will actually shut off and not hard start because of to much fuel pressure

Worked. Thanks
Well, now it’s not working. The lift pump isn’t working properly I don’t think. So I might have to change it.
What else can I wire it to besides the radio I already have another thing going there can I do it to fuse 13 power lock?
Anything with a similar amp fuse that shuts off during the cranking time period.

What kicks the pump off if you just leave the key on and don't crank the engine with it connected to the radio circuit?

That will probably be an injector or fuel connecting tube issue.
