I am on a journey to making passive income. I thought of the idea to sell fonts on my own without knowing it was already a thing. This is how I know google is listening to us because your video randomly showed up on my feed. I really appreciated this video.
sorry to be off topic but does anybody know a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I somehow lost my login password. I appreciate any help you can offer me.
Hi, thank you so much for this short video. I think I will consider taking your course! :) I am an author in the process of setting up my own company and I create my own images for my book covers. Now I am thinking that it may be a good idea to create my own font for my book covers and logos too. That way the design will be fresh and unique. And maybe I can sell the fonts for side money. Hmm. Thank you for these ideas. In the mean time, please can I ask you the name of the type of font license I should legally purchase for using fonts that aren't free for the texts inside my books? And what about for on the cover of my books? I would be so grateful if you would answer this for me. I have been looking for the right answer and I am really confused right now trying to find the correct information on the Internet! Thank you very much! Best wishes. Fiona
Thanks for sharing your career experience and insights. I also love your ebook about how to land a job as a junior graphic designer. It seems like you don't actively promote it, so I just want to mention it here.
Hello! Just a quick question: are you planning on publishing new classes on Skillshare? Or from now on all your newly released classes will only be available in your “every - Tuesday” website? Thank you very much :)
Hey! Thanks for asking! I'm actually planning to release a new Skillshare course at the end of March, and I'll also be offering every new class I make as an a-la-carte lifetime access option on my site, too :)
Thank you for this video! I wanted to know if you've run into a situation where your fonts were copied and put up on the DA Font site? I don't know if you've addressed this in your videos. Your work is lovely!
You can start with ipad, ifontmaker app & skillshare tutorial videos. Also you can sell them at creative market, creative fabrica, etsy, hungrey jpeg, etc....make sure you build an online portfolio before you sign up to a marketplace....also a cheaper way to get started is www.calligraphr.com.
Hi Teela, thank you for sharing your experience, it is very inspiring! Is your course suitable for self taught graphic designers without a hand lettering knowledge?
It's ideal for self taught graphic designers - it would help if you have some hand lettering knowledge, but you'll learn a lot about lettering and letter construction by going through the font process. It may take some extra time/practice before you have a font that's ready to sell, but from my experience and others, font making helps to improve both lettering *and* font making skills since you spend so much time with the letterforms as you work.
I practiced and summed up making my own font. But it's not on the pc or any electric device. But how can I make the font and can I earn money by selling it? Who are the buyers??
Thanks for sharing your journey, now that 2019 will begin in a few days.. I guess your font making course will be open on March. I can wait to get in!.. also tried to open a shop in Creative Market but now is an invitation only "Our shop space is limited to the most qualified sellers at the moment" and need to give link to existing products and design portfolio... your course includes other market places? I'm new ;)
Hey, I use Glyphs on a Mac and Font Creator on a PC - I have a free font making mini course with all the info to get up and running here: learnfontmaking.com 👍
This is so great!! Thank you for sharing everything you have gone through-loved hearing your story, now I want to take one of your tutorials!!! So excited!
Hi Teela! I am totally interested in taking your course. You're right the lettering, calligraphy and font making industry-it appears really over saturated. Can someone take this course if they are not experienced in hand lettering experience ? You mentioned you spent a lot of time learning hand lettering before moving on to Font making.
Thanks so much for checking it out! And yes! There have been a bunch of students who have gone through the course as semi-new letterers and have made some beautiful fonts. It may take some extra time/practice before you have a font that's ready to sell, but going through the process teaches you a lot about lettering and letter construction. The majority of the class you learn about how letters connect + ways to make them consistent and feel like a family/their own style. While font making, your lettering will definitely improve as your font making skills develop because of the nature of the process. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Hey! If you miss the enrollment period that's currently open you won't be able to enroll/access the course until the next open enrollment. Once you're in, you get lifetime access. The next public open enrollment won't be until this fall at the earliest. Thanks for checking it out!
Hey Laura! Since it's just me and my husband both doing this full time, we're not quite in a position to be able to offer discounts at this time. Thanks for asking though!
It's a decrease because I made fewer fonts in 2017 than in 2016 (my focus in 2017 was helping others in my course to create their own fonts, so I spent less time on mine) - had I matched the amount, I would have been on track for the same font income ;)
Teela Cunningham That sounds great!! I would love to achieve something similar... but I don’t have a massive following like you (years and years of hard work, I know).
It's a myth you need a massive following to get great font sales - I had a very small following when I started out. It all comes down to your style research + execution ;)
Hi Teela I just have one question about the Glyphs software. Which Glyphs license do you have? I read the course overview and then looked at the difference between the Glyphs 2 and Glyphs Mini versions and in order to export the files in OTF, TTF and Webfonts I would need the Glyphs 2 license as the Mini version only offers export in OTF. So just wanted to double check with you what license you had. Thank you in advance :)
Sure - I have the full Glyphs 2 license, but I started with Mini and offer support for both in the course. The main difference is you won't be able to add in customized extras, like ligatures and alternate characters with mini, but you can still create a fully working + sellable multilingual font with mini. I actually share a workaround in the course for obtaining a ttf and webfonts with mini, so you'll def be able to get both of those if you'd prefer to start with mini first :)
I, too, am in a soul-sucking day job and this inspires me.

Ha! So unnerving when that happens - they totally are 😬
I'm so glad I found your channel! Your story is so inspiring, it gives motivation to any rookie like me. All the best!
“It felt like a big secret” YES!!!!! I have been wanting to do this for a while. But I couldn’t hardly find any information on HOW.
Loved your story. Thank you for sharing!
Did you remove the caption option? I wanted to translate to watch.
That's super interesting... On which site / Platform did you sell your Fonts? And for what price?
I'm so happy I found this video when I did as this is new to me and something I'm interested in and enrollment is one week away!!!!
Hope to see you there!
I am almost finished my college course in Graphic Design

Teela, do you have a transcript for this video? Or could you insert/enable captioning to this video?
😉

I’m interested but I don’t get paid til next week. Would you have the open enrollment available then?
It closes tomorrow, but the free mini course will reopen in a few weeks and there'll be one more opening this year in October 👍
I learned about your font making class from BOHO BERRY (Kara Benz) Very Excited to enroll in your classes when they reopen!
How do you know when you create a font that that font doesn't exist already?
A font is a like a fingerprint - no one will create every letter the way you do, so if you haven't created it yet, it doesn't exist ;)
Hi Teela, thank you for sharing your experience, it is very inspiring!

Hey, I use Glyphs on a Mac and Font Creator on a PC - I have a free font making mini course with all the info to get up and running here: learnfontmaking.com 👍
Hi, which tools do you use to vectorize and convert your letters?
Adobe Illustrator 👍
Except Illustrator. I mean how you export your font to OTF and other formats?
This feels like a "Draw My Life" video, so inspirational 👍
This is so great!! Thank you for sharing everything you have gone through-loved hearing your story, now I want to take one of your tutorials!!! So excited!

Teela Cunningham I'm in! I might as well make some use out of my love for stationary and fonts.
Yay! So excited you'll be a part of it!
Hi Teela! What happen if we don't enroll before the end of the count down? We can't have access to the class later on? Thanks for your reply 😊

yay! so happy to have you a part of it! Let me know if you ever need anything!
what software do you use to create your own fonts?
I use Glyphs on a mac + font creator on a PC 👍
I am excited you said you teach others. Please can you teach me how to creat and make money selling font online.
all the info is right here: learnfontmaking.com 👍
Hi Teela, do you offer student discount for the course? Thanks!
Hey Laura! Since it's just me and my husband both doing this full time, we're not quite in a position to be able to offer discounts at this time. Thanks for asking though!
How were you able to get into the Stationery Expo? It looks like you have to have a business to do so. Thanks :-)
The biz I was working for allowed me to attend under their name 👍

if u r making less money on graphic designer and making more money on font then wat about youtube with freaking 150k subs? btw nice video :)
So inspired thanksfor sharing.
Thanks!! Very cool!!
Great ! thanks!
hmmm... but from $40K in2016 to $25K in 2017 is a decrease.... :( I was hoping that you duplicated your font sales in 2017 :/
It's a decrease because I made fewer fonts in 2017 than in 2016 (my focus in 2017 was helping others in my course to create their own fonts, so I spent less time on mine) - had I matched the amount, I would have been on track for the same font income ;)
What are the best websites to start selling fonts?
Teela Cunningham That sounds great!! I would love to achieve something similar... but I don’t have a massive following like you (years and years of hard work, I know).

Some of my favorites are creative market, fontbundles + the hungry jpeg 👍
