Hi everyone, how is your soap making going? I hope you enjoy this simple recipe. I know many of you in the US and Europe can't easily get rice bran oil, but you can make this recipe with olive oil too! I just wanted to show how nice this is (check out the lather test at the end) and it's actually more balanced than olive oil, as a single oil soap recipe, and isn't slimy like olive oil soap! Anyhow, have fun with it. Let me know if you make it, or if you have any questions. The details are in the video description 💚
Please please write a book. I would love to have a reference guide for soap making so I don’t have to go online and find a soap calculator. I know there are books out there but I trust your methods because every time I try to recreate them they turn out great🩷
I just tried it out and it sets soooo faassttt!!! You have to be quick as lightning to be able to pour it. It'll be a bit chunky, as I was too slow. But I'm sure it'll come out alright. The essential oils I put are 10grams of Magnolia champaca and 20grams of jasmin. It smells DIVINE!!!
hi, I've got a question. Will the outcome soap too soft or mushy? My family loves harder soap so I have to make sure before I buy the rice bran oils. Thanks.
Thank you for this recipe. I live in the US and get rice bran oil on Amazon. I get a lot of things on Amazon. Probably more then my hubby would like..😊
A little off topic, but i remembered your post collecting sea water from minjerribah for soap making. I was there last week so just before leaving ran down to deadmans to collect some. When i make the soap it will be a way i can remember a very special week in that beautiful place. I hope i can stay there again soon.
Oh that's great Jessie! Deadman's beach is exactly where I collect my water from. The little gutters and rock pools there are so perfect for it. What a magical place. Thanks for sharing that with me.

Good morning from Tennessee! I just want to thank you for this recipe and let you know I have successfully made 4 double batches of this. All came out beautifully and each scent smells AMAZING!!! I did want to add a tip and which Rice Bran Oil I ordered for everyone. I decided to use ice cubes instead of room temp water and it did not trace quickly which is a wonderful thing! It gave me the time I needed to get all the soap in to my molds with plenty of extra time to create designs on top. In fact, I had to wait about 20 mins before it was set up enough for the designs to hold. I purchased to RBO from Amazon from a shop named Gourmanity at $28.98 for 1.32 gallons. Amazing price, compared to most, and it is top notch oil with great reviews. Again, Thank you so much for this olive oil alternative! You are a lifesaver, Elly, and I absolutely love your content 💓

Hi Elly 😁 Rice bran oil is very expensive here in the states. I will definitely try the orange and patchouli essential oils in my next batch. Thank you so very much. 💕
Hi Elly, This video prompted me to repurchase rice bran oil. I've used it in the past, and it resulted in gorgeous moisturizing soaps. I have been wanting to make soap and this one seems a lot less intimidating. I am going to try and make some to give out for Christmas! Thank you so much for sharing! Looking forward to the book!
Hi Elly! I was researching and my usual store sells rice bran oil, imported from Mexico and costs twice as much as olive oil. There is none in the supermarket and, in the manufacture of soap, here we use 5-20%, a bit like castor oil. Olive oil prices have also increased significantly here in the last 2 years, but they have already been recovering. I forgot to mention that I live in Portugal, right next to Spain, where the original Castile soap was created centuries ago! In your recipe I didn't understand why it reached such an exuberant trace. Is it an effect of the rice bran oil or the essential oils you used? Good luck with your book. I hope to get a copy.
Thank you Joya, yes it has taken me quite a long time to learn how to live this new life as a youtuber, since I left my professional career nearly four years ago, but I've finally worked it out. This has been a great year for me. I've learned so much and feel good :)
Thank you Elly for sharing this wonderful recipe. I'll make this soap and let you know how it comes out. Congratulations to you for your book on soap making ❤ waiting to see ❤ appreciate your efforts for being active in youtube and instagram by sharing your knowledge with us ❤
Olive oil has gone way up in price here (Canada) it used to be about ten bucks but now the best sale price I can find is about fifteen, but rice bran oil from what I can tell is a specialty oil, I can get a teeny 350 ml bottle for $7.50 or so, though it looks like it's available on Amazon in variousstates of refinement for a bit less than olive oil... so since canola oil is $4 for 750 ml, I'm going to try substitutiing it for olive oil and I'm going to add 5% beeswax from my hives... if I can find a Canadian source for lye, I could call it an all Canadian batch! But this first time I'm going with 25% coconut oil... Thanks for the tutorial! I made my fifth batch last night (bay leaf infused olive oil, shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter and a little beeswax, using bay leaf infused flax gel), my first was with rosemary and flax gel and lavender, cedar and oregano oils, my second was the same recipe but without the rosemary, fragrance or flax gel, my third was olive oil, honey and 5% beeswax, and my fourth was pure coconut oil with peppermint essential oils. This is so much fun, but I have to lock the scented bars away in an unused room for the first week or they trigger my scent issues, even scents I normally have no problem with.
Ok I must try that essential oil combo, unfortunately I’m all out of rice bran oil and have to order it from Amazon again. My grocery stores here in Canada are stocking huge amounts of sunflower oil right now and sometimes I can find some high oleic sunflower oil, which I have also added to my soaps. Can’t wait for your book! 📕 🥰
Thank you for this great video. In Greece, rice bran oil is very expensive. However, we can get high oleic sunflower oil. Do you believe that this is a good alternative? Have you tried it?
Morning Elly, I’ve been waiting for this video 😀, isn’t RBO just lovely , apart from the fast trace which always worries me a bit that it hadn’t emulsified correctly but oh my, it does make a beautiful soap doesn’t it. I love how it’s yellow when you pour but then it’s lightened right up when you unmould . I too struggled with the individual moulds and had some pockets/holes in my cute bee moulds but nothing too bad. Well done Elly, great video 👍
Thanks Jo! It's whiter without the orange and patchouli EO as well. They do make it more yellow! I think next time I'll wait for the lye solution to cool right down. That should slow down the trace more.
I made a soap using only sunflower used cooking oil with 0% superfat. I added baking soda to increase cleansing.. it was soft for the first two weeks, but now it's hard. The lather is very poor, but it is still soap and it makes my sink shiny. Next time I'm making it I'll be adding 10% coconut oil.
In Germany both olive oil and rice bran oil are very expensive but we have an abundance of cheap cold pressed rapeseed oil from domestic agriculture and I have used it to make a castille style soap many times!
This may be a silly question but could I make this beautiful bar soap, grate it and mix with water and use as a liquid soap? Hope to hear back and thanks Elly!
Thanks for the video! Rice bran oil is high in linoleic fatty acid, and conventional wisdom is to keep that low to avoid DOS. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that.
Yes, the linoleic FA is higher than it is in olive oil, but still not drastically high I don't think. I think it's balanced by the high palmitic and oleic and somehow seems to be ok. It's very low in linolenic which is good. I've never had any DOS with these bars and I've stored one batch well over a year.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thanks for the informative response. I didn't know that palmitic and oleic could balance out high linoleic. The chemistry of soap is fascinating!!
HI Elly, thank you for videos, I really love then. I haven't made soap as yet just starting out, But hey I'm really looking forward to your book. Maybe you could consider making a course with all the ins and outs of soap making, body products and house hold item, I've looked on Udemy and there wasn't anything there that interested me. If you made a course with your knowledge and the way you teach, I would most definitely purchase it. I'm a more visual learner so a course would be wonderful. Thank you for your wonderful videos.
Hi Elly, Thank you for sharing. I live in Chennai, India. Here olive oil is available, but very pricey. I have been making soaps recently and your videos are the best guidance to me. I wanted to make a soap using the oil trinity, but the olive seemed to bite my purse. I'm not a miser, but I really didn't want to invest a lot of money in a new hobby. Here rice bran oil is easily available and cost effective too. Thank you for the timely video. I would definitely try. As a beginner soap maker, I have a question for you. The cold process soap has to cure in the open place for a month. Am I right? The fragrances or essential oils I add evaporate within a week. When I use the soap, it doesn't smell anything or sometimes a very mild, faint trace of the original fragrance remains. How to solve this problem? I usually buy fragrance or essential oils from Amazon or Flipkart, once from a local perfumery. To be frank, I bought sample pack from online and I am not sure of the quality of the perfumery, though I paid a handsome amount for lavender and sandal fragrance. Do your soaps retain their fragrance after a month in the open air? Please let me know what I am doing wrong. Once again thank you for your wonderful service to the soap making community.
hello Elly happy to see your video again, thank u 🙏🏻 and yes Olive Oil is too expensive so instead of -im making my soaps with my extra olive oil used , yes😮 i fries only one and is 🧼 clean - my Soaps nutures my skin the same 😍❤️so i want to ask u what do u think about it and why you dont do that what do you do with recicling oils i make also your laudry soap with it ( i think the caustic soda is a very strong quimical that purified the oils so why dont make soaps with it)😅 🎉❤ lot of love

Hi Elly, I am new to soap making and your videos are really helpful. I made your earlier video of Castile soap with olive oil but found that it took a long time to trace and also almost 3 days to gel. Not sure if I did something wrong. Is it better to use individual small moulds for Castile soap as I found cutting the soap was not the easiest. One last question, is this soap safe for the face and body both? Sorry for all the questions and thank you again 🌸
Hi, it sounds like your earlier one needed more mixing. Yes, you can use any type of mould, or cut the soap earlier if it's too hard. Yes, this is a gentle, all purpose soap :)
Hello dear Elly, Wish you make videos about oils in categories For example, olive oil and race bran oil Bc racebran oil is not very much here Regards, 💕
I did that already, some time ago :) *Choosing Oils for Soap Making - Oil types and fatty acids, balancing recipes and Soapcalc explained ruclips.net/video/V-uDPifp3n0/видео.html*
Mine became one big lump of jelly in a few seconds and I measured everything exactly. I'm going to leave it in the jug and then cut it into chunks? But I'm going to try again. 😊
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking i looked into it and I think the lye was too hot. Left it in the big jug like yours and the next day cut it into chunks and it seems fine. It seized. I barely got the chance to mix it. But I'm going to try again. :)
Thanks for this wonderful instructional video. Do you think the essential oils were more the cause of accelerated trace, or was the rice bran oil the main cause?
Aloha Elly from Hawai’i. What would happen if expired but not rancid olive oil was used for soap making? What if it was rancid? I’m wondering if it matters since it goes through a chemical change in the saponification process. Thank you for all you share :)
I use old oils all the time, because I hate to waste them. Oil rancidity can increase the free acids in oils, and can speed up trace, and can make your soap smell a bit rancid, but it's up to you. If I were selling my soap I would not use old oils! But for home use, it's your choice :)

Hi Elly, lf the lye solution was made the day before, cooled overnight and added to room temperature RBO, would it trace slower or would the whole mixture be too cool to saponify?
Thank you for replying, Elly! I successfully made your olive oil Castile soap last month. I'm going to cure it for 12 months. In the meantime, l thought I'd try the RBO Castile. I've made several of your other recipes, too, over the last year, and l have enjoyed every one of them. Thank you so much for freely sharing your recipes and knowledge. Such an enjoyable (and addictive! 😂) hobby. Best wishes from NZ
l made this soap in October with a brand new bottle of rice bran oil. Currently curing for 6 weeks but checked on it today. It's in a cool, dark, dry area of the house. Oh no, each bar has DOS! This is my first time experiencing this 😢. Can the soap still be used?
Hello, I made 2% Essential oil (Sandalwood) Sandalwood soap. Its been 2 days since i made the soap. PH level was around 8-9 on the 2nd day. My eyes burnt today(3rd day) when i applied it to my face. Question - What was the reason of Eye burning/irritation? Was it the Sandalwood essential oil or incomplete curing. Thank you in advance. Love from India.
It's really important that you cure your soap for at least a month before you use it! I would also say try not to get the soap in your eyes! But it could also be that your essential oil is not skin safe? Check with the supplier that it's suitable for soap making.
Wondering if there is an alternative to lye? This is my first video. It certainly looks easy. Any suggestions for molds other than soap molds. Something I might have at home? Metal mint containers, plastics, baking pans and cut the soaps? Thank you!
Hi Leslie, no alternative to lye unfortunately, but yes, you can use all kinds of things for moulds! Milk cartons are good, as in this video ruclips.net/video/lBc-dWQmFIM/видео.html and silicone loaf pans are good too.

Thank you! I actually have an excess of rice bran oil at the moment so it’s perfect. Soap calc gives very off calculations for cleansing, bubbly, iodine, and INS. Is this still okay?

Hi Elly! Love your videos ❤ i am an amateur soap maker in canada and just recently did my first RBO recipe! I managed to do an in-the-pot swirl, i wonder if its because i used other oils with it that it didnt seize so fast . Question: is it necessary to test the PH of the soap? If its calculated appropriately in soapcalc, is there a need? Thank you 😊
Hi, thanks for your kind words. Yes, if you use less RBO the soap won't trace as fast, there are many factors involved. And yes, I always test the pH of my soap - it's pretty important I think to know it's not lye heavy. I have made mistakes before with recipes that were calculated correctly, but I made a mistake making them 😬 ruclips.net/video/PHHiTTs3M_4/видео.html
Hi Elly . Weird question but where do you get your white dish sponge from? I’ve seen it on the another video you posted. I just buy from woolworth or coles but I don’t like any of them 😅
I made my first Castile soap 5 months ago and I’m trying to wait the year.😬 Do you feel this is as wonderfulas Castile? I’ve never used Castile soap, so I don’t think I could compare. It looks like it lathered well!
It lathers much better than castile! I never wait a year for either. A well made castile recipe doesn't need a year cure time ruclips.net/video/MzDZts9hjKw/видео.html
Hi Elly. I have been warned that rice bran can lead to DOS. I made a soap with canola and rice bran and it got DOS very quickly. Can you share your thoughts on this?
I haven't ever experienced DOS with my RBO soap, and one batch I stored for almost a year. I guess it depends on how fresh the oil is, and soap storage conditions too.
Ran bran oil where I live is at the same price point as olive oil. I've cut olive oil from all of my soaps and switched to avocado oil. The bar results are the same as far as I can tell.
Yes, that would be good. Avocado oil is expensive here too. In terms of a single oil soap, RBO is great. Not sure how avocado would go by itself, but great for blending absolutely!

Thanks! Have fun!
I make candles. Watching you & listening to your soothing voice makes me want to try soap making! Thanks for the recipe 😊
😊 thank you
Thank you, Elly! That was interesting! You are the best! 👌💞
Thank you! 😃
Thanks for sharing an alternative to use Elle
No problem 😊
Thanks ❤ it's beautiful
I am watching from Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬
Hi neighbour! :)
Thank you for another wonderful video. The soap looks amazing. 🧼😉🤩
What a lovely to the point no fuss video.Thoroghjly enjoyed.
Also noted after a long time u seem to be in a happy space😊
Thank you Joya, yes it has taken me quite a long time to learn how to live this new life as a youtuber, since I left my professional career nearly four years ago, but I've finally worked it out. This has been a great year for me. I've learned so much and feel good :)
Thank you Elly for sharing this wonderful recipe. I'll make this soap and let you know how it comes out.
Congratulations to you for your book on soap making ❤ waiting to see ❤ appreciate your efforts for being active in youtube and instagram by sharing your knowledge with us ❤
Thanks
I want to purchase your book when your done. I absolutely love you and your soap making videos.
Thank you, I’m excited to finish it.
Thank you! I’m going to make this tomorrow!
Great to see this video Elly!
Thanks Aannsha!
Awesome Elly! I want your book! Thank you for all you do!
Thank you! Feel free to sign up for my monthly newsletter/email if you want to stay updated :) www.ellyseveryday.com/email-list-signup
Thank you for this great video. In Greece, rice bran oil is very expensive. However, we can get high oleic sunflower oil. Do you believe that this is a good alternative? Have you tried it?
I haven't tried it, and I'm not sure about it's fatty acid profile. Will have to investigate!
I'm looking forward to your book!
Thanks, me too!
Thank you, Elly. In South Africa, there isn't much of a price difference between the olive and rice bran oil.
Hello, is it possible to make soap with Sa'ad oil?
I'm not sure what that is! Sorry
glad you are writing the book, can't wait to purchase it
Thanks, it will be a while off but I'm making good progress :)
Wil definitely be patient with you @@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
Thank you for this video. Will be making it tomorrow.
Also, can’t wait for your book 🙂
Thanks, much appreciated :)
That's a good strategy! Yes, some cheaper oil soaps might not lather great, or last that well, but they still make soap :)
In Germany both olive oil and rice bran oil are very expensive but we have an abundance of cheap cold pressed rapeseed oil from domestic agriculture and I have used it to make a castille style soap many times!
Yes I'd love to try that too! We have an abundance of that oil here too, and it's very affordable.
I can’t wait to start on my soap making journey. Still collecting some of the materials online 😅. This video is great alternative to EVOO
Thanks, yes it is! You can always blend the two as well. Have fun :)
Great soap and that scent 😊
It's so good!
This may be a silly question but could I make this beautiful bar soap, grate it and mix with water and use as a liquid soap? Hope to hear back and thanks Elly!
I’m looking forward to your book!
Hi elly. Sadly i tried rice bran and it accelerated trace big time. However, i did find high oleic sunflower oil and that has been fantastic
Use coconut oil and wheat floor for best results
? RECIPE?
Thanks for the suggestion, I have thought about that, but I guess all my videos provide the same thing for free. I may do it at some stage :)
Looking forward to your book release!
Thank you!

I think recycling oils is a very good idea! Filtration would be important. I've never tried it, but I'd like to delve into this topic someday.
Yes I do filtration till very clean and I saw people cleaning the oils in water several time as I do to reder my animal fat for my soaps❤thank u very much Elly hope u can try you will never even buy rice brand oil lot of love
I cannot believe how readily you can get this oil. I have never seen it in our grocery stores in South Africa.
Somehow Australia fell in love with it, has been everywhere for years now.
Hi hop you well miss can I use cottonseed oil for laundry soap ❤
Thank you 🎉
Hello dear Elly,
Wish you make videos about oils in categories
For example, olive oil and race bran oil
Bc racebran oil is not very much here
Regards, 💕
I did that already, some time ago :)
*Choosing Oils for Soap Making - Oil types and fatty acids, balancing recipes and Soapcalc explained ruclips.net/video/V-uDPifp3n0/видео.html*
Mine became one big lump of jelly in a few seconds and I measured everything exactly. I'm going to leave it in the jug and then cut it into chunks? But I'm going to try again. 😊
Oh goodness! I wonder what cause that. Too hot? Too much mixing? A rogue FO?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking i looked into it and I think the lye was too hot. Left it in the big jug like yours and the next day cut it into chunks and it seems fine. It seized. I barely got the chance to mix it. But I'm going to try again. :)
Thanks for this wonderful instructional video. Do you think the essential oils were more the cause of accelerated trace, or was the rice bran oil the main cause?
No, the RBO is notorious for tracing fast. I've made this without any EO and it's the same. Great question though.
Hi Elly, great video, can you give percentage of Orange to Patchouli essential oils, would it be 90% to 10%? thanks x
Check that out here ruclips.net/user/shortsHec1P_6ykMI?feature=share

Hi, thanks for that info! Rice bran oil is a notorious fast tracer. It has more saturated fats, including stearic acid, in it compared to olive oil :)
Gracias ❤
Thank you so much!!
You're welcome!
Hi Elly, lf the lye solution was made the day before, cooled overnight and added to room temperature RBO, would it trace slower or would the whole mixture be too cool to saponify?
I think that would be good to try! I still think it might trace a bit fast though. Olive oil is very slow tracing.
Thanks Elly!! Does it make sense to include some castor oil in this type of recipe? I know castile should be purely one oil but I was wandering.
Yes, you absolutely could! I just wanted to show how you can make this with RBO by itself. It's great with coconut too.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Merci encore de cette nouvelle vidéo ❤
Ici en France,l’huile d’olive a énormément augmenté aussi
J’aime beaucoup vos explications
Thank you for this video. What about slime? Castile soaps are known to become slimy with use. Have you had that experience?
This is not slimy like olive oil soap is. Much better I think, due to the saturated fats in RBO.
Thank you! I actually have an excess of rice bran oil at the moment so it’s perfect. Soap calc gives very off calculations for cleansing, bubbly, iodine, and INS. Is this still okay?
Soap calc is just a guide. This video explains how you can evaluate your recipes and make your own choices about it ruclips.net/video/V-uDPifp3n0/видео.html
I just buy from woolworth or coles but I don’t like any of them 😅
I get them from Daiso :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thank you!
Humidity?
Can we make soap from mustard oil did you tried?? If not please try
Can you use sunflower oil? Thanks
Not for this recipe, but it would be ok blended in with other oils. Here's how to calculate a new recipe ruclips.net/video/AqKxin0q1bM/видео.html
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thank you 🥰
Ran bran oil where I live is at the same price point as olive oil.
Hi mam, here in India we get refined rice bran oil, can i use? As well is the soap drying or no??
Hi, yes you can use refined rice bran oil (it is all refined due to extraction process). No, this is not a drying soap. Very gentle.
