You are 100% right about enjoying the car you have. Anyone trying to have a showpiece / museum car over a certain age is fighting a losing battle, unless they want to spend ungodly amounts of money every 5 - 10 years. It really surprised me when I did my panel beating apprenticeship many, many moons ago. You would have the cleanest and shiniest looking classic cars come in to have a panel replaced or a door reskinned, and there would just be a horror show waiting inside. Where there is welding, there will be rust. Drive it, slide it, enjoy it, but don't obsess about preservation unless you are a museum or Mr Moneybags.

  • @emilkuttel1

Once it is finally painted, Pump it full of deodorised fish oil. Still smells a bit and will keep dripping for years but helps keep the rust away. When it sits in the sun it seeps between all the panel joins. I live at the beach in NZ and my 75 Escort was restored over 20 years ago and still no signs of rust popping out. Just a thought Neil.

Just a heads up in case you never heard of it Neil... I use a german product called "brunox rust inverter with epoxy". I found it a few years back when doing my hilux chassis. Its by far the best stuff ive ever used for rust treatment and prevention. Ive used it on my sw20 and zzw30. Ive painted over it too without reaction. Its expensive, but good insurance over regular epoxy for anything internal/around the welds.

The primer insidethe panels isn't all that good, just a slight green sheen and that's it.
As with most cars, the bad rot starts from within.
You'll have a great car you can be proud of when it's done though.
Btw dont throw away the interior even if you wont install it like you said before, that stuff costs a FORTUNE now.
And the amount this has been welded/patched doesnt even register to the Mazda Cosmo that Yorkshire Car Restoration is working on, really made me think that AE86's are soon getting to the point that even the badly rusted ones (which also doesn't register compared to the above mentioned car) might be worth doing up considering the costs.
