In my part of the US, I can get a dot grid composition notebook for $2 during back to school shopping (used to be $1.25). It's only 80 sheets so 160 pages (when 1 isn't missing). I even found them in spiral format this year, so a first for both dot and spiral. I tend to get away with pigma microns, but I am also light handed. I also cheat when possible and get multi-pens like the ink joy Quatro so I get 4 gel pens in one and just add a 0.5mm pencil. Or I got lucky and found multi-pens with a pencil included. I careful remove the back sheet when rings are involved so I can use it as a template for pages I want or need to add. This saves a lot of year at a glance mini calendar writing and a few of my other spreads like my 2 page long monthly habit/symptom tracker. The tracker can be changed out monthly and saved in a folder in my filing cabinet. (I can't seem to get an app that I feel as good about as my paper version.)
The thing to consider though is because I don't do colorful decorations and let lettering be the decorations, I can get away with some higher cost pens in my budget. I use the color ink to be the signifier on my pages as to if it is an appointment, family, work, etc so everything else can stay in black making it soothing for my brain. I might be one of the few adhd people that can't stand all the bling in my functional planner. The "pretty" seriously derails my brain. I keep a folder on my device of fonts and a couple boards on pintarest so I can use fonts to look all pretty and sophisticated. That way if my planner is out at the office it runs little risk of causing issue beyond one troublemaker who takes offense at me writing my schedule down before it goes in my phone. It can be far easier to erase than edit 3 times in a day. This has also landed me as the designated writer when anything needs to "look pretty".

I do wish that dot grid journals were more readily available in New Zealand! I would seriously love to try out some of the options that people had been talking about in the comments 😄 I also like your point about using less decoration. That will certainly save money as you don’t have to buy the supplies needed to do said decoration 👏

👻 I must admit, in certain instances I do quite like ghosting. Especially when I’m just doing simple daily logs or similar, and the ghosting gives the paper that really nice used feeling. I also kind of like ridging when you have a full page of writing. Running my hand over the backside of the paper and feeling the ridging is like an accomplishment 😝💜

Yes to all of this video! I'm the cheaper, minimalist bullet journaler. So this is pretty much my journal you are showing..
Michael's for their $5 A5 dot journal, white paper.
I use Simply Genius from Amazon and got a 4 pack for about $25. They have a lighter paper weight, 80-90gsm, than the Michael's dot grid 100gsm. And it is ivory colored instead of white.
But fine liners can be used on the thinner paper. Staedtler, Tao Tree (amazon), and iBayam (amazon) will ghost but won't bleed too much. They aren't juicy fine liners and have a great range of colors.
Mildliners highlighters work well too. I have the new neutral set of colors. But not exactly budget friendly sometimes....

This is the journal I am using currently. I tend towards using washi tape for decoration, gel pens for writing (Uniball Signo for whites and metallics, Pental Slicci for another gold and the Sharpie S-Gel does better than the Papermate Ink Joy for black). I have 2 Tombows, N95 & 291. I bought the Crayola set you mentioned but rarely use it. Monte Marte graphic fine liners do very well and the Anko Metallic Brush Pens and Watercolour Brush Pens are fun but need to be used with care. There are a heap of pages though so if I get too much bleed through or ghosting I will skip a page or glue something in over it like a large tracker or a bit of artwork from my art diary. To personalise the journal a bit I washi tape across the front and back cover over the words 'dot journal'. And for those that are looking to get a dot journal at K-mart they do have a colourful version as well. Thank you for this video today!

Best low cost journal I've gotten so far has been the Agenda 52 Dot- Grid Journal, in A5 size, at Hobby Lobby for 4.99/5.99/9.99 (price depends on if the brand is on sale that week or not). It's about 120 GSM paper and it's able to handle a lot of the juicier pens (though of course alcohol markers aren't good for these). I used this sort of journal for my 2021 notebook, my 2020 Work Bujo (that eventaully became my main Bujo for that year) and my 4-Year Budget Bujo. You can also get the Walmart brand pen+GEAR brand Brush Markers in a big pack for about 15 dollars. These are limited release during Back to School time, but when you can find them, they're a perfect dupe for Tombow Dual Brush Markers.

I found. Few clear stamp sets at my dollar store also. I know some people use markers to ink them. So that could add a nice decorative touch and not go over budget. I think the Kraft paper would get boring after a few months. Well, after 1 month for me. Lol. I need colors and variety. I know some people prefer a more uniform similar look. I love that there is no wrong ways to do it for each individual.

Hi! Another awesome video. When I started bullet journaling, I didn't know if I was going to like it, so I didn't want to make a huge investment. All my supplies were old school supplies that my kids didn't use. I used a graph paper notebook, color pens and markers, and other supplies that I found in our school supplies box. It worked just fine. Now I know what works for me and I can invest in the supplies that I really want. And I definitely buy a lot of cheap supplies at my local Dollar Tree. Thanks for the inspiration!

At the moment I'm using a $AUS1 vintage pocket filofax from Vinnies with grid lined paper from Muji and a ultra fine Muji ballpoint pen with (shock 😀 horror 😀) blue ink. The pen was $AUS2.50, the paper was $AUS7 for 200 80gsm sheets which make 400 pages for my filofax

This year I started my first bujo with two bic pens (black and blue), one roll of washi tape I bought a couple of years ago, and some old markers I had. And it doesn't look bad! I've went for the minimalist look with a touch of color just to get used of it before jumping into something more decorated.
For next year I've got a set of letter stamps to try something new. But they were 1€ in Tiger, so still low budget.

Tips for a cheaper BuJo for Europeans:
1)FlyingTiger here in Europe have surprisingly good paper quality for the prize in their dot planner line. They also have cheap markers but I have found that they dry up pretty quickly so I wouldn't recommend them.
2)Some cheaper stationer/art supply brands sold here in Europe (compareble to Crayola) that have student grade supplies for a nice price are Stabilo, Bruynzeel, Talens art creation and Staedler. (Noted they also sell supllies meant for kids that are of course cheaper and worse quality).
    3) Even though colored pencils aren't that popular in the bullet journal community compared to markers I would recommend you trying them, depending on paper and the colored pencils it sometimes works quite nicely and you might like it too.
    4) For colouring smaller boxes, highlights etc. You can get a brush pen/marker look with watercolor pencils.

This is a nice reminder that you don't have to have a ton of stuff to make something you love. The only thing I think you didn't mention was highlighters -- if you want some color, highlighters come in a lot of colors and are pretty cheap and they also don't require any calligraphy skills to make dividing lines.

I got a dot grid notebook, a pen loop, a ruler, and stencils. I used pens I already had (black rollerballs for the stenciling and navy blue Pilot Frixion [erasable] for everything else). I had white-out tape already and I use that if I make a mistake during stenciling. I spent about $30-$35. In retrospect, if I wanted to do it over with a stricter budget, I would have gotten a notebook with a pen loop included, and I would have looked for cheaper stencils with just the calendar outline because that's the only one I wound up using from the 12-pack. I also spent about $20 on the notebook, no pen included, because I'd heard so many good things about Leuchtturm, and it is recommended by a lot of fountain pen users, so surely it's got good opaque paper, right? No. It ghosts terribly with ballpoint ink. Thin ballpoint ink, yes, but if it stands up to fountain pens, it should stand up to thinner ballpoint ink. It behaves like much cheaper paper. So I could have spent less for a notebook of the same quality, if not better. My bujo has no decorative elements. It's just for scheduling and I don't want to spend much time on it. My serious daily and weekly planning goes in The Hero's Journal. I color every page fully and that's my pretty planner.

I know I like watercolouring and lots of colour so thicker paper is important to me and I find ghosts really distracting, but I don’t use huge numbers of pens and having the crayola super tips can be super used full to understand what colours you use, by using them to work out that the light coloured are the tombows I would want and the full set isn’t something I’m going to use.
