Man, those Land Cruisers are awesome! I have one and live in Southern Cal. I really wanted to get to Big Bear prior to the storms and hang out a bit. After the weather came in I decided I did not want to take those mountain roads on snow and Ice. I have only been to Big Bear once...and was in my Land Cruiser in summer. Glad to see you were able to help the lesser capable vehicles. Take care and be well.

I find it funny to hear the vehicles characterized by the make and model. What really matters is tires (snow tires, or chains, not all season or all terrain tires), whether there is 4WD or AWD, ground clearance, and in heavy snow, turning off the traction control. Keeping the speed under control (slow down on turns and descending hills), making gradual changes on icy conditions, and keeping long following distance will also keep you safe.
BTW, the tie down points you used for hauling people out are not designed for vehicle recovery - they are only good for a few hundred pounds of force. They are designed for tying down cars on car carriers. It might be okay for pulling a car out of snow. The other thing that helps is getting some people together to push with their hands and leg muscle. We use it in Canada more often than tow trucks and recovery straps.

Driving in the snow in CA is totally different than in the snow in Montana. In Montana, you are on your own. There aren't chain checkpoints or stops. Nobody uses chains. Up there, you put it in 4 wheel drive or you have all wheel drive and hope for the best.

    • @alansach8437

Snow down south is always different than snow up north. The biggest difference, of course, is that drivers aren't used to driving in it (though residents of Big Bear are used to getting snow every year, I am speaking generally). Whether they are driving 4WD, AWD, FWD or RWD they are all far less likely to have winter tires on their vehicle. In the north, folks cruise around on snow and ice in Civics and Priuses without running into trouble due to common sense (from experience) and good snow tires. In the south, folks in 4WD are more frequently in the ditch (due to lack of experience and improper tires!)
Finally, (due to generally warmer temperatures following a snow storm), snow in the south tends to partially melt and refreeze into black ice more commonly, creating treacherous conditions. Case in point, I see predictions for 40 degree weather in Big Bear this upcoming week, with freezing temperatures at night.

Wow, everybody’s driving around with fully inflated tires. I always deflate mine toabout 3/5 when it’s snowing you’re getting about 40% better traction but it will cost you a little gas mileage. Just don’t forget to re-inflate them when the weather gets warm.

    • @jaysan7316

@@jaysan7316 you betcha J I’ve been driving mountain passes my whole life and everybody thinks I’m an idiot, but I actually am in control. On flat ground I will deflate one tire till the tread length is equal to the tire width. Then I’ll measure it and do the other side the same then I’ll go to the back and do those also because the weight differential from front to back they’re usually three or 4 pounds different. Now low profile tires you kind of screwed you can take a few pounds out but not much. Take care and enjoy the rest of the snow. That was a great video. It’s nice that you helped out a lot of people.

    • @jaysan7316
