Always felt surreal to me. Feels weird knowing it's actually real.
@Corbex11 Nope. The picture was taken in 1996 and access to photographic filters back then was harder to obtain. It was taken on a bright, sunny day, and the grass was so green because of the winter rains.
@Corbex11 I own a copy of the original which is the full resolution it was shot at on the photographer's camera and can say besides the photo being cropped a bit it is 100% natural.

When you've seen a photo like this for so long it feels surreal after a while.
I think it's because of the specific position of the clouds. It was a cloudy day, that's why you can see an unusual shadow on the grass.

The hill also was a vineyard before the photo was taken. A wildfire had destroyed it, so the vineyard wasn’t replanted yet at the time the photo was taken
It was actually pulled out because of a phylloxera infestation, not a wildfire

@@IsaacNicholls It was actually a strawberry field, and the land was sold so they pulled out the bushes to make way for the vineyard. The photo was taken once the field was cleared but before the vineyard was in place.

bruh. that means you are older than this photo. If you are 33 then you are approximately 6-7 years older than this photo.
The bliss view is actually an anomaly. This hill had always been a vineyard, but a fungus infection had ravaged the vines, so they were removed, and then the land left fallow to recuperate and for the soil be treated with anti-fungal agents before replanting new vines. The bliss photograph was shot during that brief period of being a grassy hill. I suspect that it was so unusual to see the grass that it was part of what drew the photographer, O’Rear’s attention to it, as he would have been used to seeing the vineyard. He said he was on the lookout for fresh green grass due to a storm in the area earlier, so he was primed to see it.

@@torak_34 That's actually how the photographer of the wallpaper discovered it. He was driving to his girlfriend's. The hill looked gorgeous because it was just after the winter rains, so he snapped a pic.

not many people know this but the windows xp background was actually still a grape field, just not grown enough
It was always a grape field, but it happened to be in the middle of a cull due to diseased plants if I'm not mistaken, which is one of the things that caught the photographer's attention

I remember back in the late 00s early 2010s I thought that my grandpa had taken that picture because I somehow never saw it anywhere else and it looked really similar to the landscape in the part of Germany he lives in.

I know right? As one of the most recognizable pictures ever taken, it's cultural significance is extremely important. It should be preserved and protected. It's more than just a wallpaper.

First of all the original photo was taken by Charles (something) in 1996 and was not edited until 2001 which was when Microsoft changed it a bit not much at all it was still the photo on the left but in 2006 it was turned into are vine yard and now this is the shit we see today.

I was about to ship an idea that you guys should recreate the Google Pixel live wallpapers, they are the most aesthetic wallpapers ever made, but then I realized it's freaking impossible to do that. These wallpapers are just on a whole another level.

Windows XP is so nostalgic for me! I remember that wallpaper so well from when I was really little and first being introduced to a computer. I really miss when we had a Windows XP desktop, I loved looking at the beautiful photo of that hill and listening to its start up sound. And I loved the office assistant cat named Links on the old Word, I would always go to that desktop to visit that cat. I miss that too.

Now do Red Moon Desert (if you can IDK if the sand dune is there anymore, which is a shame as it was the best XP wallpaper). Azul might be a fun one to recreate if you're willing to go across continents. Oh, and Autumn was another of my favourites. If anything, I'd love just to know where they were taken.
Autumm was also taken in the usa actually, california if i'm not mistaken, as of red moon that was in africa and dunes are really short lived, the landscape will look completely different

Seems like I’m early to observing a masterpiece
After the Instagramstory I was really excited for this video to come and now I’m even more excited to see what’s coming next! This wallpaper might even be the one I had for the longest I ever had a wallpaper, that’s so crazy and makes me feel really old even though I’m younger than the original photo of the hill.

This is my neck of the woods. I work here and drive by this spot constantly and never knew this was the place. I always thought it was closer to Sears Point, frankly. Looking forward to the next video on this.
Back when XP first came out, there was a lot of fierce debate where it was taken. In the Dutch language version release, the picture was called "Ireland", so a lot of people thought it was taken there. Most thought it was taken in the region of Tuscany, Italy.
What we really need is a 4k rescan of the original film roll it was shot on. I know microsoft has it tucked somewhere, they should make it happen.

I'm actually from Sonoma where bliss was taken and I find it so so wrong that they turned the location of the the most famous photograph ever taken into a vineyard. That location would have so much more value if they got rid of the vineyards and maybe added a little stand with text describing what Bliss is. Nice video.
Well I mean, a vineyard was originally there, but a wildfire burned them. They're restoring the original artifacts that were there before the Windows XP background.

While it's a common knowledge now that this is a real photo, for some time I've thought it was a 3d render done by some guy at Microsoft. You just don't come across THAT saturated views IRL, with grass that looks like a 2d texture mapped to a surface.

I used to live only about a 15 minute drive away from here. Carneros Highway, Hwy 12, was a frequent drive for me as a kid. Sonoma is such a beautiful town.

To me, that picture always seemed unnerving because it gives a vibe where nobody can hear you scream, Like I feel like i've stood in that field before, It gives off just a strange vibe that I can't 100% explain.

..When I was younger, I was told this photograph was taken in Mountain View, CA & that particular spot was known as 'Sunshine Valley'.....Later I came to know nothing was like that & it was taken at Nappa, CA...
..That hill was a vineyard before the famous picture was taken....A fungal infestation had ruined it all...So the hill was left for some months or years like that....Grasses started growing all over it again & covered the hill completely...
..Photographer Charles O'Rear was out to take some photo & was looking for a grassy field or similar. . .cause, there was a storm few days earlier...He was traveling in his car & suddenly the all green hill caught his attention...It had also rained for a short period an hour ago so the grasses were all rain drenched & looking fresh...
..The sky was clear again & only white clouds above were floating by....O'Rear couldn't resist taking some shots of that beautiful fancy dream-like view. .so he stopped his car & stepped out with his camera & tripod...
..Then he had to go to the other side of this dangerously busy road & crossing it was like a bit hell...So he waited for a minute or so.....Finally when he had managed to come to this side of the hill, he couldn't afford wasting even a second so he hurried up & started mounting his camera on the tripod & took a while to adjust the perfect angle for the shot...
..I don't know exactly how many snaps he had taken of that hill that day. .but he had uploaded one of them on Flicker - the famous photo sharing website....
..Bill Gates saw the photograph & loved it very much & contacted the photographer O'Rear asap. . .cause the picture was of course licensable....Gates had purchased the licence for the photo from O'Rear & decided to use it for his forthcoming Operating System's first ever official & default background aka wallpaper...The background was named 'Bliss' [ as the picture truly is. .to our eyes & mind ] at Microsoft...
..The rest of the history started unfolding at all our household ever since............. . . 📷 🖥️🙂💕
I smell a banger video
I was working for an Aerospace company at the time of XP release. I remember how modern it looked when they updated all the computers at work to XP. I had to rush out and get a copy for myself. I installed it on my Pentium III gateway computer tower. I thought I was so sophisticated owning such a sleek new operating system. I kind of laugh about it now.

I think the vineyard actually looks pretty neat. One in the snow might be cool (if it ever snows there).
whenever i see or recall that wallpaper, i can even smell the past computers i've held from it. the smell of the whirring white and blue system units, the mouse with the ball instead of a motion sensor, the flabby stuck keyboard and the heat from that fat CRT monitor, along with the supposed anti-radiation screen to put above the screen. the scenes where i watched x-files, the sounds from it, the weird videos i've watched as a kid, the fights i've had with my brother on who gets to go first,... the games like feeding frenzy, super mario, minesweeper, spider solitaire. those memories seem like a dream now on those vast grassy hills shadowed by clouds on a pure blue sky
Not gonna lie Everytime i see this photo i always wondered what camera do they use because the quality is so good for a camera in 1996
