#1 - XiaoYi Yi - $60
The cheapest WiFi, rotating camera we recommend. Good reliability but it has a lithium ion battery so don’t use it in hot environments. Our Review: • Yi Dash Camera Review ...

#4 G1W - $40 - No longer recommended. There are good sellers but we think the A118C is a better buy for most drivers.
#5 A118-C - $50
The original version purchased overseas is still the cheapest for $50. We think this is the cheapest camera you should purchase. There are counterfeits, you want the Viofo model. Our Review: • Video
Amazon UK: A118C: amzn.to/2u7w6QQ

Great job Andrew, thank you for the detailed reviews! You speak clearly and articulately so it was easy to follow your video. Your hard work is appreciated. Based on your review, I am going to order the Xiaomi Yi.
Thanks for keeping it short and concise
No problems jost, you may like the updated version of this video here: ruclips.net/video/vYYQnZcQxwI/видео.html
Very clear and in-dept reviews. Keep it going mate.
Thanks for these videos. Very informative. I would love to see an updated one
Great job
Keep up the good work.
Thanks Mohsen.
Interesting review, but I think a few important features are missed out completely, like parking protection. A huge number of accidents happen while you are away from your car and far too many people will just run. You've talked about power source but not battery run time while disconnected from the car or while the car isn't running.
I've viewed a lot of cameras and the main downfall I have seen is the poor resolution of moving objects. That comes from lower frame rates and is a critical feature in a dash cam because EVERYTHING is moving.
For a future video it would also be good to see some stats for the cameras based on the data from insurance companies. Which have been most successful in supporting claims and why etc.
Thanks!
Good point, so that review was done a few months back. There is a lot of data and testing that needs to be done for each of these Top videos. I've only recently produced an article on parking mode: www.carcamcentral.com/guide/guide-parked-recording-dash-cameras
It's going to be a few months yet while I first complete the "best single lens dash cameras" "dual lens" then all the information required for a proper "best of parking mode" cameras.
I think gathering that data will be nearly impossible unless that data is required for public record.
Car Cam Central which is the best dash cam with motion detection??
For parking mode, there's nothing best but right now for dual channel I'm a fan of the Thinkware F770. The Lukas AR790 has just popped up but it'll be sometime before I review it.
any recommendations on a dash cam u found to be good i your search? that is able to run with the car off and if it is running with good resolution for front and back?
I really enjoyed your review and it helped me to pick the right camera for my application. thank you and keep up the good work.
Thanks Eric! I have a new guide coming out soon. I'll give you a shout here when it's released.
Excellent reviews! I feel much better prepared now to purchase my first dash cam after watching your video. Thank you so much for all the work and research you put into it.
Hey BigScoooby, thanks! Glad I could help.
Very detailed review, thanks!
+Sami Luo You're welcome, thanks!
Hello Andrew, Can you help me choose the best HD camera with all the safety features? what do you think of these dash-cams below which are also top rated on reviews i saw on RUclips? any suggestions compared to the ones you already reviewed? thanks
KDLINKS X1 Full-HD 1920*1080 165
Vantrue R2 2K Ultra HD +WDR 2.7 Inch
DOD Tech LS460W Sony Exmor
Transcend 16GB DrivePro 200
ExpertPower Click+4K/1080p
Where is the top 1 YI dash cam Andrew recommended?
Hey Blue Ocean, sorry I missed this reply, I go through the RUclips comments section and sometimes it doesn't show threaded responses.
Don't get the KDLINKS X1, Vantrue R2 as they are overpriced for their features. The LS460W is OK depending on the price but i would rather go with the Viofo A119.
The $90 A119 is better than any other budget dash camera I've tested. It has great video quality, notifications, capacitors and stealthiness - something no other dash camera has done under $100.
The only reason not to get this camera is if you want something more reliable or want WiFi.
Link: www.viofo.com/home/30-a119-1080p-60fps-dash-cam.html
I'll be launching my review of the A119 by early next week if you want to wait. If not it's available now.
*****
No problem, I can wait. actually since I survived a major accident recently which the other party denied their fault and were able to get away with it despite all the clear evidences and my SUV completely gone! from now on I've decided to have dash-cams all around the new car that i'll be buying (maybe end of this year) I would like to have dashcam on front, back and both sides :) if possible! to be on the safe side! (I am saying this because i know what I went through after I was t-boned and almost dead!) Meanwhile I'm searching to get the most reliable 4K dashcam that can handle the hot and humid climate with crystal clear images and all the necessary safety features. if I now get what I'm lookig for i'll start using on a used car that I bought temporarily (at least front and rear cameras to start with) Thanks for your videos and reviews to keep us safe.
Update video on my new top cameras coming really soon! Sorry for the lack of comments, been focused on production.
Thanks! any ideas when the vid will be uploaded?
i do a majority of my driving at night . can you recommend a dash cam for low light please.
Today! Here you go Adam: ruclips.net/video/vYYQnZcQxwI/видео.html Thanks for your patience
Fantastic! Great starting point to choose a dash cam
Great job! Very informative.
@car cam central - I noticed those curved glass units on either side of your monitors behind you. Are they speakers? If they are, what kind are they? Looks interesting.
And also, which dashcam would you recommend out of these 5, not considering the money?
Thanks!
Those are the Ferguson Hill FH007 speakers. Lucked out on Kijiji.
I'd get the Vicovation OPIA2 for a camera that rotates: ruclips.net/video/L99xue0RWL8/видео.html The Thinkware F770 if you need a camera that does front/back. The Street Guardian SG9665GC if you want a camera that is stealthy and can resist hot temperatures.
I like the duel version! About $300 right?
When it's on sale, normally I see it around $350.
Great reviews, thanks for the help! Great job.
Glad I could help, thanks Eng.
you by far give the best reviews! thanks!
Thanks shinta
Hey Shinta, if you're still looking at dash cams you might be interested in the Viofo A119. I just released a review of it. Much better than the budget cameras covered in the review. If you want to take a look: ruclips.net/video/amjcsoExAQU/видео.html
New budget update video launched! ruclips.net/video/vYYQnZcQxwI/видео.html We'll have our video on top premium cameras soon.
Car Cam Central when? still waiting 😊
The draft is done hahah. Should be out in a day or so.
yeah! :-)
Thanks for bringing this up Truth, he's a spammer. Gone now.

Car Cam Central good video
i'm not buying any of this..none of them is good enough, i wonder if any company will make a better and simple technology these day just for a dash cam. some don't have a good camera, some don't have a good battery life, some dash cam get hot quickly, some don't even last a year..c'mon please we had enough...!!! stop waste our time and our money..make good product for consumers. lets pray for the born of a good company out there somewhere..!!!
I love the Vantrue R2 or N2. check them out
doi4eva Agree, make a superior "do it all" product and you've got my money
Get cansonic z1, it's the best !!!
I guess with your mentality, you even won't drive. You can die in an accident. You need to spend a lot of money on maintenance, insurance, gas... Well you get it! IMHO even a $10 el cheapo camera with 640x480 resolution has the chance of providing you with something that your words won't make, in the time of trouble.
Really helpful, well done. I look forward to more reviews.
Thanks Robin! Next one out will be on Taxi cameras. I hoped you watched the 2017 update to this video here: ruclips.net/video/vYYQnZcQxwI/видео.html
Thank you. You answered some of my questions. Nice video.
You're welcome, glad to help!
Good job, thanks for the reviews
Thanks Wm.
Thanks for including prices in your review.
The most thorough review about the dash-cameras that I've seen..
Thanks Elena! We're going to continue putting out great "Top ___" guides backed by good work put into reviews.
Thank you very helpful, great review
Thanks Sorin for watching!
Very good English annunciation. perfect pausing and sentence emphasizing. I could hear and understand from another room in my house. You made me want to listen.
Thanks! I'm putting time into improving the pacing and clarity of each video. Appreciate the feedback!
thanks very straight forward and easy to understand
You're welcome Vernon!
finally a reviewer with knowledge of dash cams I subscribe and like
+johnThe mann Thanks John, I hated how there were a lot of poor reviews in this space. What content would you like to see from me? Other people want the latest and greatest reviews. Others want guides such as maintaining dash cameras, etc. How can I make your life better?
+Car Cam Central a very good video idea, hacks! what else can i use a dash cam for? a baby video monitor? cheap surveillance? as a backup camera? please give top 5 hacks to make life easier
Thank you for all of your hard work! :D
Glad to help, thanks for watching. - Andrew
GOOD ON U MATE! Well done n keep up ur good work!! THANKS
Thanks! I'll try. Anything you want to see from me in the future. Besides reviews I got some guides explaining stuff like the basics, features, capacitors vs batteries, best SD card, etc.
Nice review and video man. Well done!
Thanks Mayyar!
+Car Cam Central I might get the G1W.
I'm going to produce an update but the G1W isn't as good anymore. Too many factories selling this camera. It's better to get the A118-C specifically the Viofo model as they were the original manufacturer with better quality control.
+Car Cam Central
Okay thanks pal!
Thanks for your video...much appreciated !
Liked and Subscribed !
Thanks for the sub and glad you liked it. I'm making guides on dash cameras (beginners stuff, explanations, smartphones) and reviews. Anything else you would like to see?
Very helpful. Thanks so much!
Glad to help eponymouslme!
Superb Job. Thanks.
great review. thanks for the info
Thanks for watching uruglytoo!
waiting on your Viofo A119 review , thank you for your hard work
I'm working hard on it, should be out next week.
Great video! Thanks!
Great review. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for watching Fadzli.
your explanation was very clear I found your presentation very helpful. thanks!veridicus
Thanks Dennis, glad I could help.
Thanks for the informations!
very helpful thanks.
nice review, thanks for info
Thanks Les! I just released a new review on the A119 which is way better than the cameras mentioned except for the Blackvue DR650GW which competes in another category. You might be interested in it if you are looking for a budget dash cam:
I bought the Yi and its pretty cool to see all the settings on my phone and live video, also a screen popup had a firmware alert which corrected many issues I'll post screen later also need to to compare to my G1W cam I been using for a couple years, also the suction mount from the G1W fits the Yi,bought on amazon got in 2 days
Great reviews.
Great review and comparison of these cameras! I've had the single Blackview camera (DR500) for a couple of years now and it works great. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a camera. I'm planning on upgrading to the one you featured here because of the dual camera capabilities.
go for the awolf one its on amazon for 42 bucks cant go wrong
Great video, keep up the good work. Sorry about the accident.
Too bad isn't it. Thanks Kleyon
Great review. Very clear and lots of info. Can you post names of the cameras in description, or maybe for next videos.
Do next one: "Choosing camera for motorcycle"
The names of the cameras are in the description and have been for a long time. Are they not showing up for you?
It might be 6+ months before I get to motorcycles. I don't have any expertise and there's so much to do just for cars and dash cameras before I can touch bikes. Sorry about that Eugene.
Great review! What is your opinion on the Street Guardian SG9665GC?
best dash cam video ever, thanks
Thanks Pollywog, if you liked that you would enjoy my review on Viofo's A119. Trounces most of the cameras except the Blackvue because it competes in another category. Hope you enjoy: ruclips.net/video/amjcsoExAQU/видео.html
Very good, thanks.
Thanks Solarus!
great review
Subscribed. I'm looking into getting good 4k cameras. Hopefully you review some soon! That Xiaomi would be awesome blacked out.
I haven't seen any 4k dash cameras yet. I think manufacturers have to optimize for night quality and smaller pixels makes it hard to do. Could be a while unfortunately.
Thanks. I'm subbed either way. Great channel.
I deal with cameras and theres one thing to keep in mind. A lower rez camera usually does better in better ISO (light senesitvity) at night. Thats why they shouldn't bother with anything above 1080p. Dont get me wrong they can still do a 4k and still have great ISO for night driving but that would be WAY too expensive.
Great review 👍
Thanks Lovingatlanta!
Hi Andrew, thanks for the video.. i purchase YI Dash Cam from one of the link your share here. Its very helpful.
Hey mrzaidi. Thank you. It's a great buy. Hope it serves well.
-Rolands
I've had the G1WH in my car for 2 1/2 yrs now, very happy with it,no probs whatsoever. highly recommend if you don't want to spend a lot.
Great camera although I think the G1W-CB would probably be a safer choice for most users. All the stealthy benefits of the G1WH without the lithium ion battery.
Yes I agree, I hard wired mine so no worries there.
Great job, thanks.
You're welcome Mikel
Great detailed video on all the different dash cams and comparisons between them. I liked that you showed video comparison of all the cameras as well. So I'm looking for a dash cam on a budget. I live in a 4 climate environment where the temp in the winter can get to -10F and as high as 110F in the summer. Would you still recommend the Viofo A119 over the smart Yi because it has a resistor? I don't care much for stealthiness.
100% would recommend the A119 over the Yi. Capacitors are more reliable in not only hot but cold . As well lithium ion batteries shouldn't be charged in freezing temperatures as the cold can etch a layer onto anode. batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_at_high_and_low_temperatures
Great review video.. Well produced and very helpful. For the time being I've gone for the A119 to replace a very unreliable battery based cam.. Thanks very much.. Can I look forward to similar review in 2017? Hope so!
Thanks Todd! I have a new guide coming out soon. I'll give you a shout here when it's released.
Thank You So Much !!
I've tried most of these and pretty much agree with your review! Nice work. I've seen reliability issues/failed to record quite frequently on the G1W. I like the Transcend for features but the quality isn't the best. The Blackvues are decent. My budget/lower end pick is the Navman Mivue 580.
I'll look into that model. Mivue is a more popular choice in European countries from what I've seen. Thanks for the feedback Badger.
G1W issues have always been SD card related. It's very picky with cards. I had one for 4 years before it was stolen. My newer one is a year old.
nice review
great review! keep it up!
+Vincent Li thanks again Vincent. I'm producing more guides starting with a features/beginners guide, getting into the maintenance stuff later. Thanks again for watching and your suggestions.
+Vincent Li thanks again Vincent. I'm producing more guides starting with a features/beginners guide, getting into the maintenance stuff later. Thanks again for watching and your suggestions.
I think your description body is well formatted. Right after "Hope you enjoy, this video has been a long time coming.", you may want to put a "Update [DATE] [link to video about the update]" if needed in the future. Linking to another video at a later date to explain your experience with consumer service such as having to deal with the warranty or to update views on how the battery life just started crapping out within 6 months is valuable information. This video is so well polished that it shouldn't need to be edited just to insert a quick update. Another option is to add update information through the annotations. I look forward to more videos!
I definitely will when the next update comes in. I hate reading older reviews and not know if it's still relevant.
Great review! My parents and a few friends are looking for dashcams now since I was hit by a red light runner who, with two other witnesses claim my light was red (which the video clearly shows is green). So I'm shopping around for other cameras as well to see if I can afford a better camera.
I own the G1W-C... Saved my butt TWICE now. The camera has really great video quality, even at night. Reading license plates has NEVER been an issue. I live in an environment that gets very hot (up to 100 F) and very cold (below 0 F). I've never had problems with temperatures except that the suction cup occasionally loses suction, but it's so rare that it's not a problem.
As the video states, the adjustability is awful, but it stays in place pretty well after messing with it for a while. Vibrations, in my experience, are not so bad. Unless you want to shoot a movie with it, but that's not why I bought it.
However, it won't turn on at all unless it's connected to a power source, so turning off your car turns off the camera. This wouldn't normally be a problem for me except that when I turn off my car, the video that it was recording becomes corrupted almost every time. Which is obviously a problem. The videos can usually still be played on the device, and, with some tinkering, can eventually be taken off the device.
The camera did fall off in a t-bone collision (I was struck), the driver that struck was going maybe 40-45 when they hit the driver side door. It continued to capture footage until I turned off the car.
Hey Adam, thanks! Weird your comment ended up in the RUclips spam section for some reason.
The G1W is a mixed bag ever since extra factories started to produce G1Ws. Sounds like there's a problem with your capacitor as it should safely shut down your camera. It's not uncommon that problems start to crop up as your camera ages.
+Car Cam Central Thank you! I love my cam and was hoping I could get more use out of it.
I wouldn't, it's a broken camera. If you get into another accident and the camera completely disconnects from your USB then the last (and most important) file will become corrupted.
+Adam Runde The capacitor is fairly easy to replace. I'd replace it and keep on using it.
that's crazy! I actually saw your accident (after the fact) on my way home that night. I live just down the street ahaha!
Muchas gracias! Saludos desde Chile
+Mauricio Espinoza You are welcome! Hello back from Toronto, Canada.
Any plan to review DDpai mini 2 and the new Blackvue DR650s btw nice vid! Thx
Yes and no. The DDpai is a great camera so far. The 650s has very minor improvements to the GW.
Great video! Any recommendations on other dual cams? Interested in driving Lyft and would like to record in the car for my safety.
Thanks! No recommendations as I haven't reviewed other dual cameras but from what I've seen the Transcend 520 looks like a good choice for many professional drivers.
@CarCamCentral: Great review. Would you happen to have a review for the Aukey DR-H1 Dashcam?
Hey Alan, I haven't reviewed it yet. Video quality on appearance isn't very good. This DashCamTalk thread says it's interpolated 720P dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/aukey-dr-h1-dashcam.18365/. For $70 it's rather expensive. The Aukey DR-H2 might be better but the reviews are rather terrible. amzn.to/1s8FSyf
I think I may review it just so people avoid it.
Thanks, Andrew. Definitely eyeing the A118-C. Enjoy your week! :)
Great review, but what speakers are they in the background? That is a beautiful AV set up!
Hey Alf, thanks! The speakers are from Ferguson Hill, FH007.
Ok thanks for the info.
No problems, glad I could help!
Nice review.
Thanks Kim.
Thanks for the vid, but I have a question. Would any of these cameras work well with "inner vehicle recording"? I'm traveling cross country in Jan, and we wanted to document on a "reality" type theme. So, other than utilizing our cell phones, can you recommend one of these or another different one for that purpose. *also, we'd like the feature of a app to review/edit/post to social media via our cell or the camera itself.Thanks.
Very informative video! One question, I saw Papago in your video but I don't think you mentioned it.. Are you going to review it sometime later? I just bought papago 520, still testing it out...
I reviewed the Papago GoSafe 200 but I don't think it's a camera anyone should buy. The Papago GoSafe 260 (mirror) is something I'm going to review in a month or so.
Love the last one, can you recommend something for my transit van, i'm looking for a rear cam also, i have no rear windows so trying to work around this
Have you had any problems with the mobile app used to view the recordings of the Blackvue DR350S on your iPhone? Some of the reviews mention problems. TIA
I did end up buying two of the cams you recommend here. The A118 and the G1W. The A18 I returned because the screen is just way too small. I literally had to use a magnifying glass to do the set up on this tiny screen.( warning here, do not buy from walmart.com because they use a third party vendor for their cams, and it has been 3 weeks now and still waiting for my refund} . Now the G1W I am very pleased with! Very easy to install, programming it was simple, playback on the computer a breeze, video quality day and night is great, and the screen size is big enough to see just fine. The price was cheap, so I did buy the capacitor model also so I would have one in the front and the back. lets see how long they last! Thanks for the reviews, very helpful.
Glad to help Shinta! The 1.5" screen was pretty tiny on the A118, I'm glad the updated A119 has a much larger 2" screen.
G1W is a great choice for the price, hope it lasts a while for you. Thanks for watching!
oh I did not realize that, or I would have looked into it as you suggested. But thanks for your reviews as they helped me make my decisions.
Thank you for this video!
I was thinking about buying the DODLS 430W and wanted to see if you were familiar with it and how it compares to the top 5 you reviewed.
+gamer logic I am quite familiar with it. Quality is about the same as the xiaoyi even though it only records at 1080p. Reliability is better. If it's not over $120 I think it would be a good buy. The LS460w is on sale at Amazon for $150.
+Car Cam Central You are the BEST! Thank you so much for the quick response and the detail in your response. Much appreciated.
+gamer logic no problems! Thanks!
Andrew, think this is a great video, thanks for making it. I myself am in the Market for a 2-Channel; I notice you mentioned the BlackVue, but I'm not impressed by it because of the video-quality as you mentioned. I was wondering if you could make a video like this which compares 2-Channel only. Looking forward to an update! Thanks for your hard work and professionalism... you got a Sub from me!
Hey, I'm wrapped the video testing on the Thinkware F770, it's much better video quality than the DR650GW. I'm very happy with the unit so far. There's a few more tests to do including heat and parking tests but it's looking good so far.
Good review. I have a G1W-CB and it is value for money - day and night vision is clear enough to identify or make out car number .As it is capacitor powered, it only comes on when car is started. I think it practical as it is only needed when car is started and moving and need not worry about battery life and heat which affects lithium battery life. What are your thoughts on this ? I hope this G1W-CB manufacturer with design a 2 camera ie front and back and capacitor-powered.
I wish you had the camera I picked, I recently got the Z-Edge 3 Dashcam which records up to 2k, has 1080p HDR, as well as 30fps, 45fps, and 60fps at 720p, I love it and I wonder where it falls within all of these reviewed, I was most wowed by the G1W however, the sharpness looks like it could have been software processed, but it impressed me the most.
So the Z-Edge 3 has worse video quality than the A119 and it uses ltihium ion batteries. I think it could have been a winner if it used a capacitor but I'm not comfortable with my audience base in recommending a camera that is more likely to die.
Car Cam Central I do live in Texas so it seems the A119 is just as good, if not better in terms of the high-heat capabilities. I just went with the Z-edge 3 given it's the 2016 top pick of thewirecutter.com not really my suggestion, but a pick from someone with over 15 years in automotive. Now I really think you should point out how you feel about those two in another review if you still feel a119 is better than z-edge 3. Don't knock it till you try it!
Good job
Good review
Thanks Rocky! I made a new budget top 5 to update this video that you may be interested in: : ruclips.net/video/vYYQnZcQxwI/видео.html
The premium video is coming out soon.
very nice evaluation finally which is the best to get it?
Hey Edris, thanks and there are updates to this video coming soon. There's no best camera, rather what's best for your needs. I just reviewed the OPIA2, that is the best heat resistant camera that can rotate. The Viofo A119 is my new best value camera.
tnx
Remax cx-03
Great vid.
Have you had a chance to compare the blackvue to the thinkware 750?
i even tried to search your site, i found nothing about it.
thanks
Not yet, it's on the to-do list. Check out BlackBoxMyCar's review on the camera. It's pretty good: ruclips.net/video/Furyv_zMB5o/видео.html
Nice review, but something for consideration when buying a dashcam. Super wide lenses capture everything happening infront and to the side of your car, which is good for slow moving town traffic. But they fail to capture details of things happening a little further forward, like a highway crash, where your safety distance is longer. I myself prefer 130 degree angle just because of that reason, since when using 145 degree angle cam at the same time, the same crash wasn't even visible.
I also think that GPS speed stamp on a video is a must have feature.
Please consider doing a review for Dome G30B. It is a new product with 2 cameras. I am wondering how is the video quality ie day and night time as compared with the G1W-CB. Yes, I prefer capacitor powered rather than lithium powered.
thank you for your review, can u advise me which model have a blinking blue light in the front? so can warn others that i have camera installed. thx u
Goluk T3 has one. That's probably the best budget dash cam right now with a red LED on the front when in parking mode. It was included in my roundup here: ruclips.net/video/vYYQnZcQxwI/видео.html
Hi this is the best review I have seen so far, well done Andrew.
Sorry for the long message but I'm looking for you to recommend to me a quality budget dual dash cam (2 cameras) with motion detection that can record whilst the car is parked during the day and at night time as I've had my car vandalised on numerous occasions, including someone putting a substance in the fuel tank and it blew the engine, windscreen cracked and tyres slashed.
It's my beloved BMW so I need to keep it safe. I live in Ireland so the weather never really reaches past 25c during the Summer time.
I know nothing about dash cams so I have a few questions, is it necessary to connect any such cameras to an external power source when the car is parked and not using the 12v socket in the car or would it run on it's own battery power until it's got a source of power again when the ignition is turned on?
Also are there any cameras that are able to be connected to an app on a smartphone where it notifies you if the motion detection is activated and recording starts and it shows the live recording on your smartphone? Your feedback is very much appreciated :) Keep up the great work!
I think I replied over email but here's my response for other users:
Installing a Parking Camera
So some BMWs have a constantly powered socket. This means you can plug your camera into the 12V and have it record while you're away, just remember to unplug it so it doesn't drain the battery. If the 12V turns off you'll need a hardwiring kit which connects your camera to your battery, often through the fuse box.
Dash Cam Store has a great article explaining the process. It can require some wiring work and some electrical knowledge. This can easily be done by an audio installer for not too much money. Don't know any in Ireland so that's a little harder.
Recommendations
I'm a fan of Korean cameras as they have a great dual camera solution that's power efficient and parking mode is done well. I'm very interested in theThinkware F770 as it has some great engineering and is on the review schedule for the near future.
Smartphone Notifications
The only camera that can push notifications is the Blackvue line of cameras. I reviewed the Blackvue DR650 which allows it to connect to WiFi or mobile hotspot and push you notifications such as if there is a shock detected (vandalism). This will be costly if you need a mobile hotspot as you both need to install and provide a subscription service.
That was good thanks. I have been approaching this from the inside and working out based on quality. What are your thoughts on the Ambrella chipset? Appear to have great video quality.
You never know what will happen on the road and to be left with a recording that you unable to read the licence plate is going leave pretty ticked off that you didn't spend an extra 20 or 30 $.
Hey Pauul, thanks!
Personally I think the Ambarella A12 chipset when properly integrated looks the best of all the cameras I've seen so far. If you take a look at the Ausdom / Dome review it was able to capture license plates where other cameras were blurry.
Video quality is only added protection, it's nice to get a plate in hit and run cases or to capture someone being on the phone.
Thanks for the video tips for dashcams. What is the best dashcam so far?
Hey Rommel, IMO for many drivers it's the $100 Viofo A119. For those that want something better at $250 it's the OPIA2. At the higher ends there's no best, just tradeoffs. Here's the new top 5 video if you want to take a look: ruclips.net/video/vYYQnZcQxwI/видео.html
Excellent review/s. Very helpful.
Which dash cam would you recommend with reliable motion detection and good picture quality? Looking at the Garmin 30 at B&H which has a 30min battery but not sure if it can record while parking or even if it has a good pic ... maybe you know something better.. TIA!
Nevermind the Garmin. Just saw that they only have a 90 degree view! bit.ly/1WH1P48
They're actually quoting the horizontal viewing angle which is more accurate. The diagonal angle most manufacturers use would probably put this camera around 120°. The Garmin 20 is stupidly overpriced as well, the price keeps going up over time!
Honestly, I haven't found a camera with great picture quality and good motion detection. It's mostly Korean cameras who have the algorithms and hardware done well but they tend to have worse video quality. I'm keeping an eye out on the Thinkware F770 and any other new cameras that are coming out.
Thanks Andrew. The quest goes on then :)
Great reviews. Can the Xiaomi Yi camera be used to do motion detection monitoring while parked? Thanks again.
Hey Wally, unfortunately not. There's no option and it's probably for the best as it uses a lithium ion battery. Doesn't play very well with heat. Your car can get fairly hot even on a mild day.
Thanks man, Appreciate the help. I watched some Blackbox reviews on the best parking mode cams (I need it for my underground parking, to keep an eye on my car from my truck) It's pretty cool in my parkade, up in vancouver canada. Ended up choosing a Blackvue cam.
have you reviewed the zeroedge z1?
Thanks.
cool video. looks like cads are in Montréal.
Very good video... Can you recommend a dash am that can run run several hours and loop.I don't like wires in my car and prefer to charge it in my home. Look forward to your recommendation.
As Matt said, I haven't found any camera so far. I'm also not a fan of having a large batteries in your vehicle not designed to take the heat of recording. You can just hide the wiring in your headliner with a small cable sticking out.
Great answer, thanks Matt.
Hey Andrew! Thanks for all your hard work doing the research for those of us looking to pick up a dash camera. I really like the Yi International, mostly because of the high quality video and nice size screen in the case it is needed. However, I'm having some paralysis by analysis preventing me from pulling the trigger on my purchase. I'd like to consider a camera with a parking monitor. It's really the only thing keeping me from the Yi. Do you have a suggestion of some cameras to look at that give similar quality as the Yi, with the added benefit of Parking Mode? I know the Blackvue comes with it, but it's out of my price range. Any thoughts? Thanks! Justin
Grab the Blackvue DR3500 for $115 or so. It takes away everything you don't need. The g-sensor can activate parking mode automatically so you don't need a GPS. amzn.to/299CAof
Thanks for your review. Is the A118 and the Street Guardian SG9665GC the same thing? They look exactly the same. I'm currently between the Street Guardian SG9665GC and the Blackvue. Any thoughts?
Hey Patrick, good question. There are significant differences internally both hardware and quality control. As a summary, better heat resistance, better lens, image sensor and processor.
A longer answer can be found on dash cam talk: dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/why-does-the-b40-a118-look-like-the-sg9665gc-are-they-from-the-same-company.11811/
If you live somewhere hot the Street Guardian is a great pick. If not I lean more towards having the rear camera on the DR650 and notifications but the choice is up to you.
Great review.
Would you recommend any dash cams that record while parked or when ignition is off? (when you are away from the car)?
Thanks!
Hey Michael, I have four cameras. The Goluk T3 is coming up in my next roundup but it's the best overall budget parking camera at $100. The Thinkware F50 is likely more reliable and has the lowest power usage by nearly 50%. The Vicovation OPIA2 is a decent choice for one channel recording but it doesn't have buffered recording and finally the Thinkware F770.
Thanks for looking into that. Awesome video.
Hey Michael, did a overview of the T3 in my recent video :ruclips.net/video/vYYQnZcQxwI/видео.html It is available for preorder on their website: en.goluk.com/pages/t3-overview.html They say it should be available on Amazon Jan 10th.
Great review
dude what is your advice for In hot climates which up to 55 ° C?
55C under the shade or 55C measured in your vehicle under the sun?
mean under the sun I want to put Loader (equipment) You know the equipment works under the sun
and To monitor the work from afar, better accept the charging of battery
thanks
Hey, so you don't want a battery at all if you're going to be recording while parked away from your vehicle. I'm reviewing the OPIA 2 which has amazing heat resistance (75C/167F) and a supposedly good motion detection system. Unfortunately I'm not going to focus too much on the parking stuff until much later. I need to put in a lot of work to get my level of understanding and testing where I'm happy talking about the results. As well less people are interested in such a feature.
