  • Here’s our recommendations on premium front-back dash cameras for 2019. Learn which cameras give you better reliability, performance, and features when you spend the extra money. We used over $2000 of our own money and 100+ hours testing cameras to give you our three top picks.

    ⚡️⚡️ UPDATE - NOV 11, 2019 ⚡️⚡️
    Street Guardian has fixed error notification issues with the latest firmware. The SG663DCPRO adds a Starvis sensor to the rear camera for at no added cost. We'll be adding our thoughts on the A129 PRO and Thinkware U1000 in the future. They are good and may replace the F800 PRO and Blackvue DR900S depending on their parking mode and cloud performance. The Street Guardian model remains a good buy for its focus on reliability and a 2-year warranty.

    OUR TOP PICKS & WHERE TO GET THEM
    I've purchased all dash cams and accessories since 2017. No paid reviews here. When you buy using links below, we may earn an affiliate commission. Car Cam Central is viewer supported.
    👉#1️ BLACKVUE DR900S-2CH
    Has the best video quality, cloud (internet) features and a refined design that looks great in luxury vehicles. It's 4K front camera resolution picks up more details during the day which is added insurance for hit and runs to capture license plates. Its cloud features will push impact notifications and give you live video viewing capabilities if the DR900 is connected to the internet through a WiFi network.

    👉#2 THINKWARE F800 PRO
    Our pick for the best-parked recording system. It uses less energy compared to other cameras on the market especially with its unique energy-saving impact only mode. The downside is the slightly reduced video quality compared to Street Guardian and Blackvue.

    👉#3 STREET GUARDIAN SG9663DC PRO
    Our great value pick. Excellent video quality, 2-year warranty, WiFi, useful accessories and temperature resistant design. Now upgraded to the "PRO" version which includes a better Sony Starvis rear sensor and added accessories to better hide your cables. Error notifications fixed.

      Going to post this on two videos hoping you see it and can answer this question:
      Considering the drop in resolution for the dual channel Street Guardian at $290, what’s the benefit of getting that over simply getting 2 of the A119V3 for $220 and putting one in the front and one in the rear?

      @@seekfactsnotfiction9056 That's my biggest worry too. heat. I've ruined a few sat navs by not covering them up with a rag or something, when I leave the car parked in the sun. You would think satnavs would be heat proof, KNOWING where they are going to be located, so I'm a bit reluctant to spend $300 + for something that might last a few days. That's what is holding me back from buying atm. Nevertheless, I liked your informative video and subbed and liked. But I'd like a bit more assurance that it can withstand the Australian heat.

    2 things I want in a dash-cam:
    1. Tap it or a button to record and save the last 10 seconds.
    2. Be clear enough to accurately record number plate, or use software to pick it out.
    I can read a plate from 20m plus but on most cameras can only see it at about 10m.

    Hi Andrew. Great review...as always. Given the choice between the Street Guardian SG9663DC and the Viofo A129 Duo, which do you believe is the better choice?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  5 лет назад

      I think it depends on stability vs performance. Street Guardian is more conservative with their hardware builds and gear towards long term reliability. This is great in hotter environments. The A129 DUO has the better video quality (not hugely better) and a better WiFi experience. While they have been reliable their customer service from the main company isn't as good. I live somewhere cooler so I'd go with Viofo but that's based on my personal preferences.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  5 лет назад

      Hey Wayne, best buy can work if the camera is on sale. If you go through their installation bays, it all depends on the quality of the techs servicing your vehicle. While the installation in routing the hardwiring is straightforward, they have to know how to do it right (avoid the airbags) for example.

    Car Cam Central:
    1. First off, thank you for your in-depth reviews - you are the guru of dash cams! While this list is great, all of the cameras listed are FIXED (adhered to the window and without any way of adjusting viewpoints).
    2. Could you provide your top picks and analysis for cameras that can pivot to view the left and right side of the vehicle? While most car accidents occur from the front or rear of the vehicle, many incidents occur from the driver-side and passenger-side windows (i.e. police, disgruntled drivers, car jacking...etc.).
    3. This would not be unlike your review of the VicoVation Opia2 review in 2017. What is your 2019/2020 pick?
    Cheers!

    • @Lam
      @Lam  5 лет назад

      Hello. You'de be compromising the rear camera video quality as in the F200 it's only 720p. Overall, the video quality will be lowe as the F800 uses a better hardware. There will also be no cloud functionality, driving assistance functions and parking mode alerts. The GPS functionality also isn't included. You'll have to get the module separately.

    Hi Andrew. Thanks for all your hard work. I just dropped a few bones in the Tip Jar. You obviously spend a lot of time to help us save time and we appreciate it.
    I have watched several videos and I'm not seeing anything that fits my specific needs. I have a high end car and I do everything possible to keep my modifications as stealth as possible. Appearance (or lack of) is #1. Cost is way down the line.
    Here is my situation. I am looking for front and rear cameras- as small as possible. It can be 2 single cameras. I do not need a video screen. The only time I would need to view the content is if I had an "event" such as an accident. I'm good with pulling the video card(s) when I need to see the content. I can go wi-fi or not, which ever gets me to my "end game." I would like the option of being able to control on/off recoding- when parking in public. Looks like over-write and power up when car is on are standard with all cams.
    Can you point me to a solution?
    Thanks again.

      Hello David. I already forwarded your message to Andrew. Have you taken a look at the Viofo A129? It supposedly has everything you would need in a dash camera for a good price. The absolute highest end dash camera with a great parking mode, parking reports, pre-buffered paring mode, very good video quality, and reliability would be the Thinkware F800 Pro. Does it seem to big for you? I'll get in touch with Andrew to see if he has any other recommendations.

      Thank you for reaching out Rolands. Size is #1. I would prefer just a recording device, no need for screen as the data will only be reviewed if there was an incident. Without a screen the camera size would be much smaller. Parking mode would be awesome but not necessary. Isn't it weird that the cameras in our phones are the size of our fingernail yet finding a small camera for front and rear recording is a challenge. Thank you so much for your help!!

    Very detailed comparison review. Good show. I wish there was a bit more amplification to the statement, "Unless you drive a truck your battery won't last very long." Is this days in parked mode, or does it suck the battery even while driving?

    • @Lam

      Only during parked mode, your alternator will power your electronics while your vehicle is running. Once off it's the size of your battery that determines how long your electronics will be powered for.

      Hey Zorri - glad it worked for you! I don't know enough about installers in Maryland. I did come across this thread on the Tesla forums: teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/professional-dashcam-install-maryland-dc-success.103329/
      They look reputable according to other reviews I've seen plus they specialize in Audio // Radar Detectors which is the installer type I would have suggested if there wasn't a dash cam specialized installer. hurleysautoaudio.com/
      You'd have to buy the camera yourself though. I would speak to BBMC and tell them about your vehicle. European vehicle's for sure are a bit more specialized (fuse box in the trunk) and they might have some advice for your installer.

      So both are good systems but for different purposes. Street Guardian designs cameras to work reliability for the long term (hence the 2-year warranty). It's not the latest equipment though but you'll be looked after if anything goes wrong.
      Viofo has the latest and greatest with good customer support through their retailers. I don't know what the long-term implications of them using more advanced equipment are as it's untested in a consumer, vehicular environment. 4K is a step up but it's not critical to get.

      Power Supply - Yes - I used another product, should have used the official cable. I was switching cables a lot and I left it at home.
      Black Adhesive - Yup, might have been switched and also why I didn't bring it up in the review.
      Timelapse Mode - I got 249mAH in 2FPS and 271MAH for 5FPS. Granted my equipment is scientifically calibrated but I ran the tests using the same equipment and multiple times. I think in relative terms it draws more than Thinkware but for practical purposes is basically the same.
      OCD Tronic - Ah, I didn't know about the switch. I thought they would be one and the same. I'll make a note in the document.
      18+18 - Might have been a firmware update I missed. It was only 15+15 when I got it.

      Car Cam Central 15 + 15 is the default medium quality setting. Low is 12 + 12 and High is 18 + 18 you can choose. Only the older first release firmware didn’t have it. Make sure you’re on firmware 1.33 and choose 3-wire power in the new power setting options for use with SGDCHW hard wire kit. I (Jon) operate two Independent businesses with separate Amazon stores. Street Guardian LLC specializes in Street Guardian and OCD Tronic Distribution LLC sells everything else. INNOVV, GUARDIAN TRAK, GitUp, VIOFO, RHUNDO, and more. But technically it’s still me on DashCamTalk for everything yes :) By the way the newest dual channel Street Guardian product is the SGGCX2-Pro. SG9663DR is a few weeks away as well (dual remote lens). We expect to have Street Guardian showing up in even more dealers across North America into 2019 with the current rate of expansion. From what I've seen it's not a big issue. I've seen the threads and I was looking around for more reports. Blackvue was going to implement a fix to reduce power consumption. On the latest firmware, I measured a noticeable drop in power during my tests. As well the camera's issue was that it would shutdown early because of the temperature cutoff feature not that the camera was being damaged.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  5 лет назад

      Depends on how long you are going to record for // how big the 4Runner's battery is. If it's like most SUVs I wouldn't go over a few hours as deeply draining your battery will permanently damage it if it's a lead-acid battery. That's assuming your driving around an hour at least to fully charge up the battery.

    First I'd like to say Ty for the review... I own my own car service / taxi and I've been looking for a camera that will show the entire outside & inside of the vehicle plus the ability to add an additional camera for the inner dashboard.
    Truth is when ur driving in the US one of ur biggest problems won't be passengers it will be police officers who claim u wasn't wearing ur Bluetooth headset when u was or u didn't use ur turn signal when u did or stop at a stop sign a few blocks back and if it's ur word verses a police officers in court regardless if u have witnesses or not they will always take the officers side... and u will get points on ur license plus have to pay whatever the fee is regardless if ur in the right or not and trust me that fee plus the points will cost u over time way more than a few hundred dollars would have on a good camera that u can load the proof u need onto a disk or flash card etc...
    Which is also why so many of us are looking for one u can hard mount to to the car so u can hide it somewhere in the vehicle and run a wire to wherever u hide the recording box at
    Unlike all these dash cameras that u can lol' just take and run with a hoodie over ur head or delete everything on it then hand it back to the driver along with a ticket "welcome to America"
    That said, if it has a cloud capability well then that will just make it even better and worth spending a few hundred dollars on.
    So If u see something like this please put it on one of ur episodes or mention it to the company's you talk too. I did subscribe to ur Channel and will be on the lookout for other cameras u compare and suggest..
    lol' sorry for this extremely long comment / message 🚕 🙃

While i have seen a decent amount of people who want a total coverage solution or a very secure mount, it's a very small slice of users. There's not really a solution that monitors everything unless you cobble a few systems together, likely buying two, 2-channel camera solutions and maybe a OBD logger.

      It's pretty much the same. We might do a video on it though. For full and updated list of our recommendations I suggest you check our Best Dash Cam Article here: www.carcamcentral.com/guide/best-dash-cams-car-dvrs-black-boxes-of-2018

    Will the Street Guardian SG9663DC hold up in the heat of summer in southern Arizona?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  5 лет назад

      Yup, Street Guardian is an Australian company and since the beginning they have designed their cameras for heat tolerance. If it does fail, all electronics can fail, Street Guardian and their retailers have really good warranty service especially in the United States. It's something the owners have put a lot of importance on. Hope that helps ohplezz.

    What are your guys top 3 dash cams that offer wifi transfer vs popping out the sd card? The BlueSkySea B1W is the only one i found on your channel for right now that is wifi.

      Hey, we just launched the ROAV A1 review which is a cheap, WIfI camera: ruclips.net/video/njXJoiWvses/видео.html Step up would be the Viofo A129 DUO, then one of the premium cameras you just saw.

    Question is , how this dash cam fare on high heat . I live here in Cali whwre sometimes goes to 108 F heat outside. I tried one of your recommended dual chan dash before and it constanly restarts due to high heat.

      Sorry to hear it wasn't working out for you. The cheaper budget models aren't designed for parked recording in hot weather. It's a gamble. These models all are designed for hot weather parking and have thermal cutoff switches to prevent damage. Not a guarantee it'll work, 1080F can result in 167F+ temperatures inside your vehicle.

    What would you recommend for a single channel camera with a parking mode for under or around $200 :)

      Right now we don't have such recommendation, besides getting just the front camera of the Blackvue DR590 for example. Otherwise, the Viofo A119V2 should be a great choice. Now, it also has a working parking mode. Not as good as Blackvue cameras, definitely, but it's doing its job.

    Do any of the rear cameras that are placed inside work with tinted windows ?
    (5% plus factory tint) thanks

      Hello Michael. Yes, they will work. You probably won't notice any difference during the day, but at nighttime, your rear camera might have certain issues, especially if you're driving through a rural area with minimal lighting. 5%, however, isn't that much so I think you'll be fine.

    I’d like to see a test just comparing license plate reading under different conditions. Just that one feature.

      I used to do a lot of comparisons but I found that I have a more generalized audience. There are other comparison clips on the internet if you search for them. I might start throwing more of the clips on my second channel.

      That's probably not going to be done for a while - sorry. There's just a ton of basic level information I want to push out first. I might check out DashCamTalk forums to see what people are saying.
