The RFC-20BB is a radial flow carbon water filter designed to provide very good flow rates for whole house water filter applications, while the GAC-20BB is an axial flow water filter which causes significant pressure loss and flow restriction. The RFC-20BB is the best possible choice for a whole house carbon water filter. Also known as the 155247-43, the Pentek RFC20BB provides outstanding performance for taste and odor issues.
The GAC-20BB, also known as the 155249-43, is still useful in a number of applications, but is best suited for situations where lower flow rates are expected. Oh my God. Thank you for this information. I have a relatively new home with dedicated pecs lines through a manifold. I have had three different plumbers in my home trying to figure out my loss of flow/volume when two different outlets are opened. For the past years I have been using the Pentex GAC20BB. I just ordered another one from Amazon and was going to install tomorrow. Will be returning and getting the RFC. Wow - If this finally solves (or even helps) my flow/pressure problem.

OK, I get it now. Though the magnets will only deal with calcium, turning it into calcite crystals. The other hardness minerals will not be affected by the magnets. But it will reduce some of the hardness.
Calcium is not magnetic.
Individual housings is the ONLY way it will work. If you are making these housings, do you understand that you need to design a complex internal structure that will drive the water through the filter? If you have a pvc pipe and simply stick a filter inside, water will take the path of least resistance and go around the filter. You need the ends to be sealed, then force the water to enter the outer circumference, then exit through one of the ends. Have you looked closely at a filter housing?

How do you determine when to replace, loss of pressure or by date
The better gauge might be water pressure, depending on your water flow and usage.
Do these help or remove iron and or calcium?
You should use a filter designed for iron removal for iron under 3 ppm, such as www.discountfilterstore.com/20-inch-big-polypropylene-filter-housing-with-iron-and-manganese-reduction-water-cartridge-kit-by-tier1.html; calcium is a dissolved hardness mineral that is best treated by a water softener.
