    My wife orders a lot of stationary/office products from Etsy and something I notice all of her favorite shops do each time is include a personalized thank you card. The ones she gets aren’t anything too crazy, just a branded card that coordinates with the rest of the packaging and a simple thank you with her name and a little promo for upcoming sales or new product announcements. It’s such a small thing, but she gets so excited every single time. She goes back to those same shops each time just because of those little cards.

    In all of the woodworking videos I have watched, this is the first one that showcases such a fundamental part of the business. Your branding and box design could be as impacting if not more so then the product it's self.

    Would you say it's necessary to wrap cutting boards and kitchen products in a tissue paper before putting it in the custom box? I am thinking of simply putting the products on the crinkle paper in the custom mailer box, and then putting that inside a brown shipping box. Any problems with that? Do you think the boards would get damaged?

  • @Martin1519
    @Martin1519 7 месяцев назад

    Now how is the mailer box packaged in the Shipping box? Is it just dropped in, or do you add more stuff to protect it from rattling around inside?

    I would say if your laser is large enough to make your own boxes until you come up with one that works for you. We have used a laser to make boxes, engrave the text and images onto card stock before cutting the box out. I think I have over fifty different stiles of folding boxes, but I really like your pick. It looked good, it was simple, it was easy and you didn't need to put weeks into designing and cutting to come up with a design that works for you. Good job!

    Hi guys.
    Firstly, I am at the same stage you are doing the same thing in the UK and packaging was a question that I'm starting to ponder.
    Love the way you broke down each challenge and found a great solution and given some of the comments too I will now be addressing this.
    Can I add an observation. I love the black outer box but the matt finish marks easily. The clean Apple type matt white box may be better especially as you are using this as a parcel box. Just a thought but thank you so much.
    P. S. Loved the first video which explained maximising the amount of boards per week that was possible. Very smart

    Great intro! Not sure how true it is or not but apparently Apple did research on how long it takes for a customer to reach peak excitement when opening a package. That number is apparently 7 seconds, so when you open a new apple product they engineered their boxes in a way that it takes exactly 7 seconds to open up lol. Thought that was pretty interesting when they told me that at the apple store.

    I have looked at Uline like you mentioned and I’m familiar with them I think the per box prices are reasonable but they don’t seem to offer printing.
    Did you buy the boxes and then use someone local in your area to Print on them? Or did you use somebody else that was more all in one.?

While I agree with needing to fit the board into it's own slot to look more custom, the crinkled black paper doesn't do it for me. It reminds me of cheap party stores. I once took a class with a graphic artist and he explained that when he takes every iteration of what he's doing to the customer, he puts it in its own special portfolio and puts tissue between each item. He refered to it as 'the dance of the 7 veils'. People get invested in the product when they have to go through a process of unwrapping.

    I live so remotely that I've never been inside an IKEA either. Do they really sell end grain laminated over MDF? Now, that's cheesy. My experience of packaging is that the first priority is to deliver the product (yes, end grain boards) un-degraded which suggests highly uniform sizes so the work fits the box and can be displayed either in galleries or festivals. High quality two-part boxes like Apple's are custom and are outrageously expensive in small quantities. They would also be costly to ship and warehouse empty because of their volume. Such boxes would be more expensive than the wood you are using. Your choice of packaging suggests you expect to sell primarily online. If you ship with your boxes being the outer packaging, how do you think that packaging will look after you seal it with tape and entrust it to any of the delivery services? On the other hand, I love your butcher paper sleeve both because my boards are oily, too, and the size would be readily customizable by using a cardboard shim when you tape up all sides (sticky dots?) with a light, reusable adhesive on the flap. I've used bubble wrap to full the excess room in my boxes. No matter how you slice it, shipping, packaging, and online expenses are going to take a big, big bite out of your retail price which is why I've confined myself to the very top end of the market. Best wishes for the success of all your enterprises.

  • @WoodUCreate
    @WoodUCreate 4 года назад

    You might need a light cardboard insert to hold the board in the center. Otherwise it will slide up or down and that filler will be smashed and it won't present like you want it too. I know the boards might be different sizes, but a black cardboard piece surrounding the board would look professional. Remember UPS/FEDex will not handle it how you'd like to.

    You guys are so awesome... I might have missed it, but how did you come up with the name of your company? Samara Table Co!!

      YOU’RE awesome!
      Well we chose Samara because they’re the little helicopter seeds that fly off of maple trees...we also fly 😂 ...and build lots of things out of maple!! We’re also on a big “growth mindset” kick lately so we’re all about plants and trees and things that grow 🌳

    Got to wonder when the packaging is perceived to be more important then the product.

    I might have missed it but have you two explaied in a previous video why you chose the name Samara Table Co.? I know you are intentional about everything y'all do so wondering what the marketing idea was behind including "Table" in the company name when you don't only make tables.

    • @jennieanddavis
      @jennieanddavis  4 года назад

      For sure! So we chose to make tables our business “identity”. We want to be known in Houston as the go-to business for all things tables (kitchen tables, coffee tables, end tables). That way there’s no question about who we are and what our specialty is. Of course we’ll do other sorts of custom furniture products as well, but it’s much easier to SCALE your business when you have your “main” products that you build most often. Our overall goal is to scale our business, so we don’t need to have hundreds of different products.

      @@jennieanddavis Roger that and totally get where you coming from now. If you get to "world domination" or something like Davis said then I am guessing you may have to drop (or continually explain) the "table" part of the company name. Just a thought. Keep on keepin' on though. You both inspire me and my wife all the time. Blessings.

    They are nice packaging but you got to also remember can you add another 10-13 bucks just for the packaging.
