  • The Keychron Q1 is a highly-customizable mechanical keyboard that's comprised of mostly aluminum. It features hot-swappable key switches, customizable key caps, and additional customizable internals. It's truly a work of art, but the lack of built-in Bluetooth support will make it a non-starter for some. What do you think? Full written post: 9to5mac.com/2021/12/09/hands-...

    I had been using my macbook pro’s keyboard since buying the laptop in 2015 but something always felt off about the experience. Once i learnt about mech keyboards, i bought a K8 with gateron blues and it felt like the typing speed i used to have and overall typing dexterity had returned. the height placement and loci of the keycaps felt natural. I like it.

    My first mechanical keyboards are K4&K2 but I fried them with a defected MacBook charger without realizing.
    Just like people who don’t understand why high profile keyboards exist, I don’t understand how they can stand typing on those low profile keyboards without hurting their fingers.

    Why can't Keychron just make a QMK version of their K series without dropping bluetooth. K7+QMK is the dream keyboard.

    • @radfaraf

      They have a number of new keyboards coming out in the coming months all QMK based, would be really surprised if a Bluetooth QMK is not in the works.

      From what I heard, QMK and VIA sucks a lot of juice from the battery, so its not ideal for for a Bluetooth keyboard

    It's not the switches that are non solder-able, the pcb is. It's hotswap so you can put any switches you like. And you seem new, so welcome to the custom keyboard community, be careful not to go broke with this hobby.

    I agree with some of the previous comments:
    1. I’m a macAholic, so no Bluetooth doesn’t worry me.
    2. BUT: just seeing height of those keys makes my fingers ache already!!! And typing on high keys is so much slower! Why on earth would a Mac-user want to go back to that?!? 🤯
    Further:
    What’s the point of backlighting *AROUND* the keys?!?
    Backlight keys are great. Especially for people like me who switched to Mac for accessibility-reasons. With a vision impairment, backlit keys are a lifesaver: getting your face down to the keyboard to see the key-labels whenever you’re in less than ideal lighting is just not sustainable. And so yesterday!
    Nicely bright backlit keys I can still type away or game while the lights are dimmed because someone else wants to watch telly.
    While I’m very intrigued by the customability, I will definitely *NOT* bother checking this one out due to two dealbreakers:
    1. No backlit keys
    2. Yucky high keys - so last millennia
    ….. and I, personally, would really like one more row at the top to use for macros, gaming-commands, quickly muting the computer, playing music, adjusting screen brightness, adjusting sound volume, moving between desktops, turning Siri on/off, opening computers Bluetooth settings, zoom in/out ….
    Actually, better make it two spare rows at the top with spare keys to bind to all kinds of things! 😂
    TO THE MANUFACTURER:
    ‘Disability’ and accessibility is a *MASSIVELY* exploding market. Especially since in a lot of developed countries accessibility-equipment is paid for by the taxpayer, not by the user. 😉
    So it’s a market with really deep pockets! 😂
    Might be an idea to have keyboard highly customisable for a huge range of disabilities:
    Backlighting, key height, key responsiveness, key surface (smooth vs rough), key resistance, large key labelling (while *STILL* backlit!), key colour, key padding/space between keys, volume of key-click, keys with raised/stand-out & tactile labelling …..
    Then, of course:
    Customising the weight of the keyboard by adding/removing internal plates,
    Maybe even changing the angle and height of the keyboard itself to get rid of annoying wrist-rests.
    Make it a truly fully customisable keyboard every user can modify to suit their size of hands, tying structure, and accessible to all abilities! 😁
    Of course it’d all be different sets and additional purchases.
    Ka-Ching!!! 😝
    Oh, there’d be so much money in this one!!!!
    And if I could alter the variables relevant to my disabilities, I’d order it straight away, unseen.
    And I wouldn’t care about the price!
    If/when you’ve caught up to providing that, let me know! 😁

      You know you can just order the barebones one, buy whatever switches you like, then buy a keycap set with see through letters. This keyboard is made to appeal the custom keyboard market, not a normal consumer like you.

      Most people find that they actually type faster on tall-key mechanical keyboards. When I switch from my MacBook keyboard to my mechanical with tall keys I add about 15-20 WPM to my speed.

    • @sandgaijin
      @sandgaijin 2 года назад +1

      If you learn to type on a keyboard properly, then there's no need for lights. That's why there are notches on the F and J keys. Your eyes would be on the monitor 100% of the time.

    • @vali69
      @vali69 2 года назад +1

      @@sandgaijin yeah, people don't seem to know what touch typing is.

    • @vali69
      @vali69 2 года назад

      @@jordancda let's be honest here, the 4mm key travel of mechanical keyboard and the 2mm registration point is really small so even if in these videos the keys and switches look huge, once you actually see one irl you realize they're kinda small. Meanwhile on a laptop keyboard the travel is like 1.5 to 2mm.

  • @vladimirtalijan
    @vladimirtalijan 2 года назад +2

    Unnecessary long key travel, it's way slower to type compared to any Apple keyboard.

    • @vali69
      @vali69 2 года назад +2

      Yeah but it's way nicer, it's about the typing experience. Who likes to type on a keyboard that feels like a touchscreen like those scissor switches apple used to use, that besides breaking easily, had what felt like inexistent key travel. This keyboard is made to appeal keyboard enthusiast and those getting into the hobby, which has been growing a lot recently, so it's not for people like you and basically everyone in this comment section who's a normal consumer not partaking in this niche.

    • @lucas_vlanc

      The long key travel is what makes it feel a lot more comfortable to type on long term. Shorter keys are better for bursty typing sessions while mechanical keys are better for longer typing like writing an article or essay
