    Coccydynia
The coccyx is commonly referred to as the tailbone. It is the final segment of the vertebral column comprising of two to four separate or fused vertebrae (the coccygeal vertebrae) and it lies below the sacrum. The coccyx is a very small bone and most doctors are not very familiar with this bone. The coccyx provides an important attachment for tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Lumbosacral spine x-rays and MRI will not show the coccyx. If you want to view and review the coccyx, order coccyx views or MRI. Dynamic stress views of the coccyx while the patient is sitting and leaning backwards. These x-rays should then be compared to a non-weight bearing film with the patient standing or lying to the side. Excessive movement of the coccyx is abnormal. When sitting, the coccyx shifts forward and acts as a shock absorber. The coccyx bears more weight when the person is sitting and leaning backwards compared to when leaning forward. Coccyx pain symptoms include pain during sitting or when getting up from sitting, pain originating in the middle just above the anus, pain while leaning forward or to the side, or local tenderness over the area. Most frequent causes of coccyx pain include falling onto the buttocks or falling backwards, fracture or dislocation due to trauma or injury, malignancy, pregnancy/labor, or idiopathic. Falling on the tailbone can lead to coccygeal pain known as coccydynia, resulting in chronic inflammation of the sacrococcygeal joint. Types of coccyx injuries include anterior dislocation, posterior dislocation, anterior angulation, and hooked coccyx. In addition to hooking and dislocation causing pain, there may be a side bend deformity causing the coccyx to be angled sharply. The side bend deformity is usually to the left. Dural tension causing sacrococcygeal syndrome, low back pain, and other symptoms is a nonproven theory. Curving of the coccyx causes increased dural tension. Coccygeal extension relieves tension and back pain. treatment of coccygeal injuries include manipulation, therapy, cushion for sitting (doughnut, balloon, etc.), injections, or surgery as a last resort. Surgical treatment of a coccyx injury is removal of the mobile or fractured coccyx.

when sleeping, use a hard surface if you have forward bend coccyx. Then when seating, always use a custom coccyx cushion or 2"foam. Then try to walk 5minutes at least everyday but don't run. This will help to reduce the pain within 1 month.

Agreed. I've had this since 2016 thinking that it was a bruised glute. I glute turned blue. I thought that it would heal over time with that thought but when the bruising went away the pain was still there. I asked my Primary to check it out and she said it was my lower back. Still Suffering with this.

I've had this pain for over two years now, extreme pain every single day. I've tried various osteopaths, sports masseuses and chiropractors, spending thousands in the process; the pain is still exactly the same. (Some massages will offer minor, temporary relief). My last resort is now going to a private doctor (Spire) who will charge my family thousands more to see if they can help :(. I can't live on with this pain any longer.

I do live with pain in my coccyx for almost 13 years. I have operated and removed in 2018 and things become worse. I am on 4 to 6 tramadol a day and doing nothing other than layjng in bed, if I walk or exercise the pain gets worse than it will be 6 to 8 tramadol a day. I have lost the count in treatment with all type of procedures, even being injected pain killer straight inside the bone. Nothing help. Absolutely nothing . My friend I had enough of this long time ago, I just keep going because of my little daughter.

I got this pain from laying tile on my floors last March 2023! I just bought a seat cushion recently and now it’s getting better. I had to stop the tile work for 6 months since last August 2023. The doctor said to stop working 6 months ago on the floor and presently the pain is almost gone as of March 2024. A year is a long time to be hurting 😮

Iam so scared. Itz so paining. I consulted so many doctors. They sujest me to just sit salt water. But pain is not at all reduced😭😭😭Iam 15 year old.mri result told i have swelling between tail born. What should i do. Itz one year completed of this pain😭😭
Edit : guys 🥺...my pain is completely gone🙂..all the treatment i done gone no use i just believed that Jesus Christ will cure my disease and it happened after 1 n 1/2 yrs🥺🥺🥺
    Thanku so much🥺❤️
    Since most of u asked!!!
    Here is the story
idk how I got this pain, maybe fall from cycle or something!!! It was so pain in tale born while sitting and while trying to stand ...
First I consulted doctor he recommended donut cushion for sitting!! I used it for 1 yr no result!!!
Then I consulted same doctor during that yr he suggest apply ice and hot water twice a day in that region!! Also some medicine!!! No result
Then tried physiotherapy!! It made more pain in that area!!
So I consulted another doctor ( in advanced hospital).. He suggested sit bath.. But no result... At last he asked for surgery!! But my parents didn't allowed for that so we finally quit
After some days we met ayurveda doctor he recommended traditional way of medicine with oil, herbs, acupuncture etc but I was too lazy doing it so I stopped it because I was convinced it will not go
Now what I say u won't believe may be!!!!
    But it's true 100%
I went to christain retreat !! It was 3 days in my school I just prayed by asking and Believing God!! So as a part of retreat I went to counciling he asked me "do u believe this disease get cured now "I said yes.. He plased his cross in that region !!
He then asked me to sit and wake up .. Miracly it got cured!!!!! 🥺 I went and hugged by friends sudden..
    It was what happened!! 🥺❤
If u believe me or not it is the truth 💛✝️

I got an injection after 9 months of pain, not knowing what was going on. First he doctor told me it could take months. The thing is I didn’t cause any trauma. It happened during a trip to Italy. Everywhere I sat too long was painful, and I dreaded getting up. The initial pain was the worse for about 15sec. A few days after the shot in March, the pain getting up was gone, just a little when sitting too long. I had 2 flights to Europe after that shot. Had no issues. I needed another one around August, but days before my appointment I believe the pain was from my low back pain that went away. She said just get it anyway for maintenance. Currently it’s February 2024 and I was miserable on my flight to Colombia. Not looking forward to my return trip. But 5 days after, I have another injection scheduled. When I move to Colombia in May, I’m going to have them look further into why I’m having this issue. It’s too much of a hassle with this insurance in America. Injections not fixing the problem. Colombia quality of care is above Americas. Overall the injections last about 5 months for me. BTW, my doctor also told me everyone’s different. She had patients where the injections only lasted 1 month. I feel for them.

I had fallen hard several times on the ice during practices. Now I have pain daily & I have an abnormal gait due to repeated trauma of the coccyx. Would removal or surgery of the coccyx be a good option when all conservative options have been tried and failed?

I could not feel such improvement when I kept going to work until we got feast vacation and I was in pain so I just stayed in bed in the position that did not caused me numbing or pain ( mostly sleeping on the left side)

I thought same. I lost 7 pounds in 6 months, then with much sitting I got the pain. X-Ray shows it's already angulated inwards, but I might not get the pain earlier due to the buttocks fat. Now, I'm eating much to get the fat again and Cat/Cow pose + kegel exercise.
