Lesson link: banjobenclark.com/lessons/ama... - In this lesson, we're not only going to learn two different versions of Amazing Grace on the mandolin, but we're going to work on making our tremolo patterns "intentional", as well as learning how to find harmony notes to play along with the melody!

To anyone considering the website. Well worth the money. Lifetime is the cost of a few private lessons and these you can rewind and play back as much as you need. Excellent value for the money. Thanks BanjoBen.

Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you, Publicenemy1. I do this for a living. I guess I'll choose to feed my family, and I'll have to just deal with being called selfish.

One thing I think is helpful to understand about tremolo picking is it's purpose: to act as a stand in for sustain. Mandolins have basically no sustain (at least compared to other stringed instruments and when thinking about the comparative volume), so they can't give you a note that rings out for like a measure and a half. The way you get that is by continuously sounding the the note. Because you're having to strike the note multiple times, you get a sort of warbling effect as the volume dies down, gets struck, dies down, and that's what you're controlling with the speed of your tremolo.
The lack of sustain is mostly mitigated these days by technology thanks to microphones and dynamic mixing that can keep a held note loud enough to be heard, but since a lot of mando performances still aren't mic'd and people decided that they liked the sound of the tremolo, it's become a sort of standard practice.

If I can figure out the melody notes by hear, how do I know what the harmony notes are. Sometimes I can hear it, but how to I identify what harmony I am playing?

What a comment from Publicenemy1! We all have to make a living somehow don't we? It would be good if we could all afford to be 'selfless'. I would love to welcome everyone to my campsite for free but until I can afford to I will have to remain selfish..... Carry on feeding your family Ben so that we can enjoy your good work. I have not progressed to subscribing yet - I'm preparing by following your free videos for now.

You might want to consider turning the video camera upside-down for some of these videos! This may sound crazy, but it would be easier to recognize the chords from that perspective, as if we were playing them too.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now I'm found,
Was blind, but now I see.
    'twas Grace that taught,
    my heart to fear.
    And grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear,
    the hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come. 'tis grace that brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead us home.
The Lord has promised good to me,
    His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
    as long as life endures.
When we've been there ten thousand years,
    bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise,
    than when we first begun.
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now... I see

Terry Hack believe it's and 815 could be wrong though. Believe the 815 comes with the scoped extension. And I've never seen a 515 that has a "traditional" extension. 815 come in lacquer or varnish finish 815/815v. I used to have a 515 there a good mando but the 815 and 915 are a step above. Hope that helps

Banjo Ben Clark I thought so. Sounds very good. Still have the F5g though right?! I had the chance to buy a Gibson fern 2001 model signed by Danny Roberts for $4800 I should have bought. I've kicked myself ever since. Had the prettiest back I've ever seen on one. I play a custom "Clawson" by the late dean clawson of advance North Carolina 84 model. It's pretty good especially after Skip Kelly worked his magic on it. I remember going with dad to get it when I was young. Always wanted a Gibson though. Maybe one day. Dave Harvey's new stuff is phenomenal. I'd take a good Eastman 815 or Kentucky 1000/1500 too! Lol thanks for your videos Banjo Ben!!!

No wonder he's Public Enemy #1
Some people expect to be spoon fed for free. When I was learning to play there was no tab, no tube, no nothing. We used to slow down LP's of Doc, and Doug Dillard by playing them at 16 rpm and just plain trying to figure out what they were doing! That weeded out all the public enemies.

The tremolo doesn't feel right being so precise, just listening to it. Needs more variety, but good enough for a basic lesson.

  • @darkxdayx

Why do you need his tabs when you can literally see what he is playing? I don't think it could actually be any clearer, he's even got the tabs and the chords in the video.
If you don't want to pay for his tabs stop being lazy and write your own from what you see.
