- Music on the silkroad, or silk road music: "The Spring on the Tianshan Mountaon" (天山之春), composed (re-arranged) by the renowned pipa master Wang Fandi （王范地) based on one of the famous pieces of Xinjiang uyghur folk music for dance （新疆民歌）.
Xinjiang (Northwest of China) is located right on the "silk road" (丝绸之路), which played an important role in the commercial and cultural exchanges between the east and the west.
The current piece is originally for pipa solo. In this demo video, pipa soloist Liu Fang performed with percussionist Ziya Tabassian (from Persia, now in Montreal), concert live recording.

@ArkadooKid The second drum he plays is called a dayereh. It's an iranian frame drum with a row of small metal rings inside the frame that act as jingles.

Do you know where the Uygurs originated? There are areas in XinJiang that have Buddhist paintings with the faces of Persians and Christian frescoes that have the faces of Chinese. There was a lot of cross cultural borrowing in all forms of the arts.

wow this is Uigur music? wow! i read a lot about these people, their language and history so much mystery.. from David Hatcher Childress who claims there are underground tunnel systems going through the Takla Makan desert many thousands of years old. I want to go there and also north of Tien Shen, in Kazakstan and Kyrgyzstan. Thanks for sharing this music, it is similar to other central asian music I think. cheers from the USA!

Sorry, I clicked wrongly. Anyway, this instrument's origins was Persia according to some sources and Central Asia (known as the Western Regions during Han Dynasty). It was indeed called barbat. It was imported into China during Jin Dynasty during 3rd century via the Silk Road. Became very popular during Tang Dynasty. Was then imported into Japan, Korea n Vietnam from China. This instrument is extinct now in Persia/Central Asia.
