The title of this classical master piece
is "King Chu doffs his armour" (Ba Wang Xie Jia), from traditional repertoire for pipa solo. It describes a tragic event around 202 BC (see www.philmultic.com/liufang/video/ for more information and a video of higher resolution.
About the music:
according to Liu Fang, there are different versions for this piece according the schools and styles of individual performers. This is the version of Wei Zhongle (1909--1998), one of the great pipa masters from the last century; it is very different from the version of Master Lin Chicheng(1922--2006). These differences are very natural for Chinese music from the classical literati tradition (In fact, the differences are expected, not the "sameness" as far as the soul of the music plays a role, see www.philmultic.com/English/Chi... )
The whole piece consisted of three major parts: the first part is
very rhythmic and powerful with the same melody repeatedly played
on variations of techniques, depicting the tension of preparing the
battle, until one couldn't "breath" at the climax the music suddenly stopped and a silence set in. Then the second part begin with haunting melodies depicting the feeling of the King when he realized that he couldn't turn the tide. His beloved concubine
committed suicide with the thought of free him from the "burden" of taking care of her. The music for the scene of "farewell to my concubine" is particularly heart-breaking. ...
The final part is a relaxing melody when the battle was over, and soldiers went back home. The king Chu committed suicide himself after lost the battle and his beloved concubine Yuji.
The pipa has four strings and 30 frets, and is often referred to as Chinese lute or the Flamenco guitar of China, though the playing techniques are quite different.

《霸王卸甲》是著名的汉族琵琶大套武曲，取材于楚汉相争的垓下之战。
这个曲子取材与《十面埋伏》一样，也是描述垓下之战，同样是采用章回式结构，但立意不同。《十面埋伏》的主角是刘邦，所以乐曲高亢激昂、气势磅礴；而《霸王卸甲》的主角是项羽，所以乐曲沉闷悲壮。
全曲共分十六段：（一）营鼓 （二）开帐 （三）点将一 （四）整队 （五）点将二 （六）出阵一 （七）出阵二 （八）接战 （九）垓下酣战 （十）楚歌 （十一）别姬 （十二）鼓角甲声 （十三）出围 （十四）追兵 （十五）逐骑 （十六）众军归里。其中别姬一段极为哀痛，渲染了“力拔山兮气盖世”的项羽在四面楚歌声中面对爱妃发出“虞兮虞兮奈若何”的无奈和痛苦。

Actually, I first heard the pipa about a year ago, knowing very little of Chinese culture, and yes! it was immediately obvious that this was something very beautiful that I wanted to hear more of.
But the more I hear and learn about this, the more subtleties that I notice and appreciate. So no, one does not need to understand the cultural context, but it helps.

This musical instrument is called Pipa. The song tells a story about that the king is taking off his amour and going to committed suicide because he lost the battle. If I didn't misremember.

Your feeling is very accurate, shows that you really understood the music. The historical background for this piece is about the King of Chu, Xiang Yu, one of the great tragic heroes of Chinese history, on the eve of his last battle against overwhelming odds. So this piece is about a man trying to summon the courage to face his own death with dignity. A related piece is Farewell My Concubine, about Xiang Yu saying goodbye to his lover, who commits suicide.

美不胜收。 我是韩国人。 我在去年短期滞留中国的时候，就体会到了中国古典音乐之美。 每天晚上双眼都盯住中央台音乐台和戏曲台，一动也不能动了！ 尤其，音乐台所举办的全国民乐大赛播放之际呢 简直抱着电视台团团转了！
在我观赏中国民乐之时， 尽情享受中国音乐之美之余， 也能体会到中国人与时具进的原创性。 不像韩国民乐界那样墨守成规，古典乐器原封不动地保留下来，乐谱还用井间谱，工尺谱之类的古型， 结果导致音域不宽，音量不足，独奏尚可， 合奏实在不敢恭维的尴尬局面。 这样一来韩国民乐简直不能满足现代观众的审美标准， 韩国观众也不会积极去听民乐了。 韩国音乐市场当中，民乐的市场肯定会达不到西方古典音乐市场的几十分之一。
反观中国， 民国以后在乐器，奏法等方面不停地加以改良和完善，同时也不失民族特色， 结果能提供给世界乐迷们这么优美的礼物， 真是羡慕极了！ 还有，'霸王卸甲'让我想起去年在北京梅兰芳大剧院观看的由胡文阁演的京剧霸王别姬，着实令人记忆犹新， 回味无穷了。thank you for wonderful perfomance.

i like how the pipa has a classical, unique chinese tone to it. for a stringed instrument, it also has a percussion aspect to it when she strums very hard. its lovely :)
This is beautiful. I think that the next generation of great musicians are on the internet watching these videos and seeing the entire world and all its instruments. Hopefully the more exposure to music from around the world, the more original and crazy the music of the future will be!

Thank you for posting this. Liu Fang's playing is fantastic. I thought of the beautiful poem by Bai Juyi "The Song of The Lute" in which he describes the sounds of a woman playing; thick strings spattered like a rain shower, thin strings whispered like lovers, big pearls and small pearls dropping into a jade plate. Skylarks chirping, a spring flowing under ice,silence, a crashing vase, splashing water, clashing swords, tearing silk.

The pipa is a beautiful instrument, and the skill and passion this woman has are incredible and show very clearly. You can really feel the story she's telling, even if you aren't quite sure what it's about.

wow, what a fantastic performance by this pipa lady player, the music reflects rage and anger,i was totally involved and touched by the music, is it about war or revolution, i could feel the swords and soldiers marching towards the battle feel, i could hear the groaning of the injured and outcrying of the dying, yet the inspiration of fighting growing from time to time. salute to liu fang, hope to see you performing live.
