How did you discover his age?
My father's family came from the Yorkshire coast. When I was about 8 I was fossil mad and my father gave me a beautifully prepared Dactylioceras communis, sliced in half but with the outer coating also removed. It is one of my most treasured possessions. The inner chamber patterns are beautiful.
If you walk along the beach at Whitby you can easily find fossils, they wash out of the overhanging cliffs. The village has lots of fossil shops.
I love that you cut all these Ammonites but saved one to keep intact. Good choice! Thanks for sharing what you do!
I LOVE that one that fractured! Glad that you left the last one whole. Great collection piece. Thanks for sharing.
Great to see such beautiful fossils from my home county being cut!
The one you polished ... that one REALLY showed the gold embossing ... but look at all the little cells .... like lace. Maybe Noah will cut it somewhere down the line. I am enjoying your curiosity and sharing the journey.
That was fascinating. I subscribed to Yorkshire Fossils and very cool to see what's inside. I like the earthy tones.
Hello! U just gained a sub cause of the amazing and glorious effort u pt into your videos!
Appreciate that!
I hadn’t seen any cut like this either. I think I like them better cut. I sure am enjoying your cutting videos.🥰 Thanks Taylor
Awesome awesome awesome 🥰 I love you reactions too 🥰
I love the one that cracked while cutting. I’d happily buy that!
You could prep them on the outside by scraping off the concretion to reveal the shell of the creature and then cutting it in half. They would look so cool
I love ammonites. I have never seen them cut open before. Thanks!
Happy New Year, Taylor and family! Awesome ammonites! Thanks for sharing!
The second one is my favorite so far too!!!
The second from last is my favorite!
I LOVE them cut open!
Nicely done and nice fossils.
You need to come up to Alberta for these Ammolites. Need a license now to harvest them. But there are a few who would welcome you to their sites.
I think I would glue the chunk that book off the last one you cut.
Those are so cool! I liked the second and last one you cut. ❤️😃
Thank you, Agate Dad!!!
The second one has really pretty details!!!
I think the fourth one is really beautiful!!! Now my favorite too!!!
WOW, VERY COOL!!! LOVE THE FIRST ONE!!!
Beautiful
There are rocks that i slice that have different smells. There is a brown clear agate from the Morro Bay area of the California coast that reeks of sulphur.A green jasper from the Brookings,Or.area that smells like old ladies' perfume! Another,Chrysacolla, smells like mothballs.I can only imagine what kind of mineral composition there is in those!
Hello Agate Dad! Its almost time for the Premier! I cant wait to see what you will be cutting next 😮
Gorgeous ammonites, have e you ever cut belemnites? Same structure but straight, super interesting!,
I would love to see them polished!
me too😁
Beautiful Ammonites and a cool way to open these fossils ❤
That was cool. I never saw them cut apart before. Loved them!
Thank you for sharing these ammonites. Beautiful. Happy New Year!
God's wondrous creation! What an amazing reveal!
Absolutely!
This was exciting to watch! So cool. I've seen their short videos when they crack them open but I like how detailed it is when you cut them open. You can see everything so much better cut than cracked open.
The intricacies! and, then I started wondering what a microscope view will reveal. Isn't that a purely human thing? always just "one more idea!"
When I first cut antler on my saw I too was shocked and disgusted by the smell!! Living organisms of any variety are stinkers!!
Beautiful work as always, I just love your videos and you are the sole rock hound I follow!! Best wishes to you and yours ❤🎉
Yes last one you cut probably had pyrite in it.
Those are gorgeous
Great for you to feature ammonites from Yorkshire Fossils. I watch their channel. Cut ammonites make great jewelry when polished. Ammonites can get a pyrite shell that polishes to a gold tone. I hope you can share some more with us.
beautyful ❤
So how did you spend New Year's Eve 2023? Oh just watching Agate Dad cut ammonites!
You're the best!
Did you ever find out why it smells differently?
Looks sick!!! Gotta work but I’ll definitely check it out after. Keep on rockin🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
You too!
👍
Im so glad you got your Ammonites from Yorkshire Fossils...they have a great channel . I used to go on holiday in Yorkshire and hunt for fossils on the exact beach they find their's. If you ever come to the UK, please visit the Yorkshire Coast 😊
Can we buy these from you? My 6yo would love one :)
Yorkshire fossils uk have Amorite’s are these from them?
Oh you did get them from YF, I should have waited until I watched the whole vid 😂 (I recognised them thou which was Kewl)
The goody bits are called pyritise like pyrite. I watch YF all the time .
Have you ever cut any baculites lengthwise? Am curious if they have pattern. I've reached out to other rockhounders, but got no response. I've seen some baculites with calcite crystals. 😀
Oooh, I’d love to see some Baculites cut as well
Great video. I have never cut any of these before. Thanks for sharing this 😊
You mentioned that it smelled like oil. Makes you wonder about the term fossil fuel.
I would love more ammonite cuttings! Fossils are so interesting! To think they were alive so long ago, and the story they tell after cutting them. So cool! I wonder how old they are? 😊
The fact that some stunk is proof that some remnant of organic matter is still present, or there is a mineral that has a distinct smell.
Yupp
What fun!
Cut, cutt . Now you have to polish them cll aii.
The smell could be compounds containing sulfur and the host rock is shale which could be small traces of hydrocarbons aka crude oil. Not an expert just an educated guess.
WOW, never seen ammonites like these 👍
So fun!
@@AgateDadI bet it is 💯
Amazing
Those were super cool. I have bothe whole and cut ammonites in my collection but mine aren't from the Yorkshire coast. Mine are from Morocco and Brazil I think. And they are the ones with the partially filled chambers and they are highly agatized. The Yorkshire ones are paralyzed which is why they look gold. But the insides are pretty much mud filled and that's what the replacement is but they are still cool. Maybe get some from Brazil to cut open and you will have better luck. Thanks Taylor! Happy New Year! ❤🎉
Those are really cool Taylor! I wonder if the matrix is some kind of shale, like shale oil is found in. That might explain the oil smell.
Maybe the fine folks at Hi-Tech might hook you up with one of their 8" flat laps, since you've been such an ambassador for their saws? Just a thought.😃
I have a flat lap, I also attempted to polish one on my cabling and it went really well, video coming soon :)
I've heard that cladapora (sp?) rocks smell like oil when cut due to the fossils in the rock, maybe because the ammonites are technically fossils too?
Sooo kool 😍😎💖...id definitely wash my hands afterwards lol 😅... thanks for sharing ❣️... have a blessed day ❣️...
Love it!! The gold inside can be pyrite!!!
Sweet!
Those are cool
I agree, thanks for watching Jeff!
@@AgateDad I started watching this time last year and have seen all your videos. Yours were the first rock related videos I watched and now I sub to over a hundred channels and have my own channel. But some people, uh hem, cough cough, don’t seem to watch mine, cough cough, not mentioning names…. Lol
Yes! cut it!
I've cut petoskey stones and the smell was like oil too.
Crazy!
Shucks.
Are these the ones up on Etsy?
Not all of them, I’m saving the best of the best for another project, to be continued..
@AgateDad That’s awesome! Btw, you know why they smell like oil right? They were once living cephalopods like our modern squid type creatures. Any decaying life underground will produce oil at some point and the drills everywhere (that I’m not a fan of) on land or in the sea are going after this oil for fuel. This is why when you cut them you are getting the nasty oil smell. You are actually smelling the once live organism even after all of these years! 🦑
I wonder if you saturated the stones with CA glue before cutting would the fractures stay in place?
Not sure, it is what it is
Cyanoacrylate (super glue), a thin version would probably work best. Harbor Freight sells a cheap version in there regular which is very thin and a gel also.
The last one you cut, where it broke..is reparable with glue?
I polished that broken one, looks pretty sweet
Neat o skeeto 😁
Hello from Texas
Another hello from S. Texas 😊
YorkSHER. Shire in the UK is pronounced SHER or SHEER, never SHIRE.
I like shire better
I wonder how it is that things still stink after so many thousands of years?
Right?!
@@AgateDad I realise there was a decaying sea creature in there once, but soooooo long ago!
I really like these. Too bad that one fractured! But you’re right, it is unique. Glad you de decided to not cut the last one.
It polished so well!
Did you show it polished…🤔. I don’t think I saw that…
❤👀❤️
Are these similar to Madagascar ammonites?
Similar in the fact that they are ammonites, yes
@@AgateDad I just wondered because they look very different. I've had Madagascar ammonites to use in jewelry and they were cut & polished, some segments were hollow and I could see the outside of the shell because it didn't have all that crap stuck to the outside. Other than that, they seem similar. Maybe what you have is a much lower grade, I suppose.
Also im thinking about doing the mebership but ill read more to find out more information 😊
Definally
I don't wanna sound like a Princess but once you watch the guys sledge hammer these open they all look the same, so it holds no excitement...although I love all them and respect what they are. BUT, when you cut them and we can see the chambers it's a brand new appreciation. I'm wondering if the chambers are filled with sand or food being processed through.
Some chambers are filled with quartz :)
This is so wrong. Under the Coastal Protection Act 1949, the removal of any natural material such as sand and pebbles from public beaches in the UK is illegal.
The company that supplied these fossils is licensed by the UK government to collect from these beaches. Have a look on their RUclips channel and website it’s all explained there.
There is no mention of anything like that on the website I looked at by following the link in the description. In addition that website is not compliant with UK requirements - ie gdpr cookie notice, policy, and requirements for any company to have a valid address on their website.
Ok calm down we are not clubbing seals. There are billions of these around the world and im no electrician but im pretty sure they didn't feel a thing.
You need to relax. You are literally being a Karen troll.
@@AgateDad absolutely 💯. I and everyone else loves the content Taylor. Keep it up your channel is awesome man.
Sorry your aging of these amonites. Is not scientific so you have lost my interest
