I'm not a "rock person" and RUclips recommended this video to me purely at random, but ... wow. I totally share your enthusiasm for these obsidians. Totally gorgeous.
I have wanted to get into rock tumbling for most of my life, but other things have prevented me from doing it, however, your enthusiasm makes my day and it is a pleasure and real treat to watch your videos. I fear that I am now getting too old to start a new hobby, although watching you is making me reconsider.
Love your channel Ariel, very refreshing to see someone with a channel who does it out of a genuine interest in an activity or hobby. I really did not respond well to the Ai song at the end, though. If you feel it adds something to your content, that's great, but I don't see it as a positive thing and it's instantly recognizable as computer generated content. You are so down to earth and genuine that it sharply contrasts your vibe.
crazy polish. obsidian is difficult to tumble and get the shine you got. Really got a perfect polish on those. I think the smaller barrel method is the key so there isnt as much weight on the stone. I could be wrong. Either way its great work.
I guarantee it’s worth getting a rock tumbler! A friend of mine gave me one and it’s so much fun, I’ve always collected river rocks here in California and wow they are beautiful after tumbling 😊
@@AgateAriel you’re the first and best channel rock tumbling! My husband was born in Chicago, grew up in Michigan and I also learned about morel hunting 😊 thanks much!❤️ always looking forward to your videos
Typically the first stage is the only one that takes multiple runs (weeks). And as you mentioned it is really a function of preference and how smooth you want the surface. If step 2-4 takes longer than a week each, something went wrong. And, steps 2-4 can be completed in just a day or two each with the use of a vibratory tumbler. Point being, the whole process can be completed in a month or less with some experience and added equipment. I've found rock tumbling to be a lot like magic tricks, most people keep their process a closely guarded secret. Probably because of the time and effort they spend learning all the little details. Your finished gems look beautiful, very well done.
You did a great job on those Ariel!! So glad you found the time to play w/ them. Rainbow obsidian definitely takes patience eh ^^ Nice work and great video 😀
I love this video. I was you had a new vid and dropped everything and grabbed my earbuds. Obsidian is one of my favorite kind of (rocks? Idrk what to call them) they looked so good in the end! I can't wait to see more of your videos!😊
Nice work , been a rock hound for about 40 years now. I have 8 tumblers now 3 barrel tumblers an 3 vibraters.....what it's just a hobby lol. I do 5 stages 50-70, 120-150, 500, 1200 an 12,000 polish. I do first 3 in tumblers last 2 in vibraters. Once again BEUTAFUL ROCKS great job.
@@fossilfighters101 yeah at first I thought “aw, well that’s such a nice compliment”…. Then I thought about it more and was like “hey!! wait a minute!!!…” All of my women friends have hobbies and great personalities!! They wouldn’t be my friends if they didn’t. Where is this person hanging out that they don’t meet interesting women?! The bar or something? Do they even try asking women what their hobbies are? And do they mean specifically a hobby that’s interesting to THEM?! Because if they are implying what I think they are, makeup and nails and fashion and other conventionally “girly” things are hobbies too.
I just got a 12in slab saw, I've been a rockhound for 3 years and I hit the motherload of agates and jasper-agates. I discovered a undiscovered gravel deposit from the Missoula floods 13,000 years ago on the Columbia River. I have hundreds, I am starting my journey to make stained glass windows out if agate slabs and other translucent rocks I have. Im pretty excited.
I was very interested in seeing what you did and how it turned out because I collected a bunch of rainbow obsidian last year and have been trying to tumble it with.... mixed results. I saw a LOT of that edge bruising in my rocks. I was using borax (reduce gas buildup), sugar (thicken the water for a slower tumbling action), and plastic pellets (add volume and cushion the knocks). However, I think the pellets floated too much and there wasn't quite enough sugar to really make a good syrup. I'm glad to see that using ceramic media and running each step longer, especially the polish, gave that glassy finish that you got. The stones are SO pretty when done, and it really takes patience to bring out that gorgeous luster and colorful flash! Thank you!!!
Don't forget... for the impatient, you can learn to hand-sand semi-rough rocks instead of waiting for a tumbler. You can use a Dremel, polishing wheels, all sorts of ways to make things shiny! I still love the dedication that tumblers have for a very niche business / hobby. Tumbled rocks are kinda rare these days, and I love the experimentation, it seems to be paying off!
You remind me of an old friend of mine. The difference is: she could tell me the name of every little plant in my yard, and you can tell me what every little piece of my driveway is made of. 😊
I just excavated a piece of pure white milky quartz near my house that humbled me... and a new video from you about obsidian and talking about balance... come on... it just gives me so much joy!
I have a couple containers full of obsidian from Oregon. But like you I have been afraid of tumbling them......thanks to your video I am now going to try it....fingers crossed!!
Wow, they look fantastic. I haven’t tried polishing rocks yet at all because I’m trying to find out all about how to do it first.. your videos are doing that for me and I am so eager now to get my own own rocks and try it myself. unfortunately I’m not a very confident person so I think I need to just dive in and go for it :-)
Ariel you have incredible patience I’m not what to process quickly to see a finished result admire your work make it so simple to do and enjoy your enthusiasm thanks 😊
I live in Brazil and there's a lot or rock formations here in my region. As a matter of fact, our property is located on top of s huge slab of granite, it's a valley actually, with a few meters of soil on top of it. I'm thinking about getting a saw like the one you use to cut them open to see what I can find. I think YT suggested your channel because I also follow Dan Hurd. Nice work, Ariel.
The best things take time! Glad you mentioned that tumbling doesn't have to take months also. The end result looks amazing, so SHINY! All the extra time paid off!
Beautiful rocks!! That flash from the microscopic inclusions of different minerals, reflecting light in various colors is INCREDIBLE!! No, addicting!! TUMBLE ON!! 😁👍🪨💦
Ok, you got me wanting to clean up and service my tumblers. I've been sorting for tumbling, just hadn't started any loads. Now that I have multiple barrels, I'll reserve them for stages😊
Glad you're sticking with it. My friend bought a rock 🪨 tumbler, ordered some rocks from Amazon, tried it once and gave up. She tried to give it to me but I didn't want it. Kudos to you for your determination and interest in this hobby. I guess it's not for everyone 🤷 😕 🙃.
Nice results! Have you ever tried any of the techniques for tumbling softer rocks (such as fluorite or even calcite)? I've seen suggestions of a near-full barrel, reduced grit and more tumbling media for cushioning. Or even 'dry tumbling' without water! I'd be curious to see what's possible.
I see it often said that tumbling obsidian is a bad idea due to offgassing and blowing up the tumbler. Looks totally fine, compared to the marbles video. Really, really good results!
I recently got into rock hounding. I metal detect & started to fossil hunt, so it was kind of a natural progression, because I was always finding cool rocks!! I love watching you & wish I lived near you lol!! None of my friends are into any of my hobbies, so im always out there nerding alone 😂 I still cant identify most of the rocks I find, but through you im learning!! I want to buy a saw, do you have any recommendations? Thank you for being so thorough with your descriptions & I love your enthusiasm!! ❤
I was told the key to obtaining a stellar final polish on obsidian was to do the final polish with old rubber bands and corn syrup instead of water. I haven't tried it yet, but the old timer seemed to not be yanking my chain.
That was some good shift.😮 So amazing to see how patience pays off. Another great video! I'm a little sad though. I forgot to leave some money on my card and didn't pay my patreon.😢 Hopefully have it fixed next week. Hate to miss any awesomeness 😁.
Nice! I’ve been collecting and cabbing many types of obsidian. It’s a fun rock! Have you thought about getting a vibratory tumbler? Once you finish stage 1 in the rotary it’s only another week to finish all 3 stages and it’s so much gentler on your rocks. I have a Raytech and a mini sonic. I highly recommend the Raytech.
Ive had really good luck with the plastic media with any glass stuff in my tumblers, I'm thinking the ceramic scratches the glass in the beginning and causes the final polish to take longer. Not a criticism on your work, they are all absolutely gorgeous! Just my experiences with glass and ceramic haven't gone that well 😅
This video was so fun! And your obsidian is so beautiful!!! 🌟 Next to my house, there is an old 1800s graveyard. I found a small rock while cleaning it up. It's light and dark pink, probably in quartz, maybe? I tried looking it up. But I couldn't find a good answer for what it is. Might you have an idea?
P.S. I also do gold prospecting they call me the 70 year old prospector lol that is what got me rock hounding. I won't get into the metal detecting lol there's treasures out there to be found. Keep up the great work
Hello Agate Ariel, I would like to share a cool obsidian that would be perfect for tumbling, Mahagony Obsidian due to its black and orange colors and unique shapes but I am not a professional rock tumbler but hopefully Mahagony Obsidian can make an amazing video in the future 👍

It all depends on the quality of the stones and their hardness. Shortest could be a month, longest could be several months!
