Honestly I super appreciate that you shared this with us too! The good and the bad, we can learn from what you are showing us. A huge bummer though, cuz you are right, at first glance they looked great 😢
I would say that they are real ammonites, just very low grade ones that haven't fossilised properly. The outer whorl, which has stayed relatively intact on the outside (and hasn't needed any touching up), has filled with sediment (like the second one on your other video) whereas the centre has crushed before or during fossilisation, which explains why they were shaped by hand and the mineralisation in the centre is from the decayed shell.
they are what i would call, enhanced fossil casts. the actual fossil is gone, but it left a void in the host in its exact shape, which then filled in with minerals and solidified. they are "enhanced" because of the chiseling to add lost details back into the fossil, the outer ridges though would be authentic. ammonites are some of the most common types of fossils, unfortunately not all have the cool crystals, and a lot are just casts.
Glad you shared this as a warning to those wanting to buy fossils online, hopefully you have reported this seller to ebay and been reimbursed. They really need closing down, so others are not taken in. Going to look at your genuine ammonites being opened!
I contacted the seller as they are US based and I know they got these from overseas and they have been very kind and they do not want to sell fake things so they are working with me on this. I will make a follow up video on this matter.
I do find fossils filled with matrix quite often, only the outer mold reflecting the ancient critter. I wonder if they had partial outer pieces and filled centers with composite material and carved the center?
I believe that was what Taylor was thinking. And he said he paid "quite a lot" for them, thus the disappointment at what he actually bought. They are "enhanced", not 100% authentic. "Where are the chambers?"
“I’m not tryna be a bummer”, it’s totally ok, most of us have probably bought rocks or fossil online and they get to us, and they’re fake or not even close to what we ordered. Its always super disappointing and a bummer. You taught us something though, about what to look for

If you used paypal to pay for those, you can first appeal to the seller that these have been fabricated/altered and not as advertized and want a refund. If they refuse/go mia, you can appeal with paypal, with pictures (and pictures of what they SHOULD look like) and they are very good at refunding. I got my money back when I purchased a shirt that was advertized to be one specific size and was much much smaller. Yes, ebay does not want sellers who will make people stray from ebay because of fakes. It's worth a shot to try, speaking as a former longtime seller (and buyer) of items who has had to deal with a lot of unscrupulous buyers and sellers.
Those are steinkerns (internal casts) of ammonites. That's why there are no chambers. Had you asked any paleontologist or even an avid ammonite collector, they would have told you, "Don't bother cutting them open -- there's nothing inside." You need a "full body" specimen in order to reveal living chambers.
I watched this video and the video link you posted, with my cat 🐈🐱 We thought the linked video was awesome 👍 As you said, it's a lesson learned. Still a fun video 😃
Sorry you went through that. We all can feel your pain. I've never seen a whole ammonite outside of in a museum. Usually sold already separated. Have to find a localish trusted supplier for piece of mind. Great video. We need the good and the bad so we can learn so thank you.
Great info and sadly about as most of us expected 😢. It’s a shame the number of fakes i have been seeing. At a recent show one booth had 100 of these all identical like a machine carved them out of a cement. There was no variation at all in size/weight/color/pattern or anything to convince me they could even plausibly be real. Dude just had stacks and boxes of them all the exact same and I think also from Morocco supposedly. Then there was the amber. Tons of “perfect insect specimens” for only a couple dollars a piece. I’m sorry but if a booth has hundreds of thousands of insects in “amber” and it’s $2-$5 a piece it’s NOT real 😅it makes me sad to see so many fakes on the market devaluing the real things.
@@AgateDad I’m very intrigued by the spiral of crystals inside. It’s almost as if they found small concretions and actual small ammonites then encased them in a cement to carve out. But then on the first two cuts I saw what looked to be other small shells inside the cut?! 4:52 on the bottom right especially you can see what seems to be a shell.. so 1 of 3 theories I’ll make shortish- a real imprint was made (the big outside pattern) that hollowed out and wasn’t preserved well except the center and the rest filled in with mud and other shells and dead things and it all fossilized within the mudprint of the original large ammonite and they then reveal as much as they can and carve out the missing bits from the mud/cement to look real. That’s a generous theory I think to give them the most likely real result. 2/3 they find real ammonites that are small and add cement and carve out the big shape leaving the small crystals inside. 3/3 it’s a total sham and they place some crystals inside the mudball of cement in case anyone like you cuts into one they can be like oh it was real but just not good… 😅 hope someone comes along and provides more than my random uneducated theory. But there my 3 cents 🤘
@@RufotrisRootedRockhound From what's inside I would assume these are real, they're just not as well preserved inside as some of them. You have to remember that ammonite shells Would have been hollow before fossilization so shell's and other debris probably entered with the mud that filled them before the fossilization process.

I watch Yorkshire Fossils and they find loads of ammonites, most in pods, I think they call them. Anyway, they crack them open on video, some are lovely and complete, some look like the crushed crystals in Taylor's fossils. Erin and Shay, brothers, explain that some are crushed during formation, and some are incompletely fossilized to begin with. i think what disappointed Taylor so much is that with them being so complete on the outside, he expected the same detail on the inside. I'm not trying to speak for him, just trying to understand myself how I would feel. The point is, whatever the seller started with, he/she manipulated it to look like a better/more complete fossil than it was.And that deception is what hurts.
Every video you do is rnjoyable. I feel bad for you that you got ripped off but they are still pretty, just not as expected. We all apprecite your videos...the good results as well as the not so good.
If I look closely, is looke like a mold would be filled with crystals inside and then filled with concrete with minerals inside to fake the rock look. I believe that because the crystal part looke like it has been just floating there and not grown there. I could be wrong tho, the first one looks like it kinda has traces of chambers near the middle, so it could have been sediment filled ammonite of really bad quality that was re-chisled into a good looking shape.
@@AgateDad From what I've read, almost all morroccan ammonites have been mined out already and fakes ones are carved out of fossil matrix. Dunno how they managed to get the swirl tho, so maybe it's carved from another snail like fossil? Or of just very very poor quality, like you say. I've read that a lot of those have their cavities filled, even the real ones
You can't fake quartz; I feel like it would be a lot more effort to quarry and shape these than to just find real ones. They do look like they have been "touched up" on the more delicate features though with those chiseled center part of the fossil. I'm guessing ammonite fossils from this area are mostly just sediment filled instead of including the fossilized shell.
they are called fossil casts. the fossil rotted away leaving a "mold" or cast of itself in the host rock. that fills with other minerals and solidifies. so they aren't exactly fossils, but they are natural, near perfect copies of the fossils exterior. the added chiseling was an attempt to recreate details that would have been there, but were lost in the process of forming.
That's kind of a bummer. I've had that happen to me before and I am kind of skeptical of ebay at times. Still a good video Taylor. You seem to make something good out of nothing. Looking forward to the next video. Take care.
@@AgateDad I’m just impressed that you took it with a grain of salt and still showed it. I would have been a bit upset and probably would have been to pissed to continue. Great job.

me encantó que dijeras algunas palabras en español, jjaajjajaj "no bueno" jajjajaja...... dí algunas más en siguientes videos!!! saludos desde Buenos Aires, Argentina!
Definitely real ammonites that have been worked. This is quite common with ammonites in Morocco and Madagascar. Although there are a lot of fake ammonites coming out of Morocco the ones that you're working with are in fact real ammonites. The innermost details have been carved out since those details did not get preserved in fossilization. Some of the outer portions of the Ammonites have been worked with tools as well but much of the exterior of those ammonites is original.
What a bummer. At least you could laugh about it. I would try to get your money back. How's that sellers feedback? Im still happy you posted the video! 😊
So very sad to see that they were a disappointment. Given the swirl inside, they look real. It'd be such a waste to just toss them. Perhaps someone could mount them on a plague & use them for wall decor? That rough sandstone finish is very popular these days. Make lemonade out of those lemons, Cheers!
@AgateDad how did they fake them? The inside looks like real crystals and rock to me...same with the outside ridges. Just trying to understand how they did it.
wow I knew there was bunk fossils out there, I will watch for that with ammonites. I honestly expected some sort of chamber indents or evidence of them. Thanks for showing us that dude, those can get pricey.
I;m wondering ... assuming for the sake of argument that they are real, what if the region they came from affected how they fossilized? Each geologic area has unique properties tat determine not only how things grow--animal and vegetative--but how they decay or fossilize. Could be? I don't know. But it is a possibility. Maybe? Just a thought ...
man thats such a bummer id be pissed. oh there are some UK youtubers that go ammonite hunting and break the host rock with. they sell them where you can crack open your own ammonite that are real and not fake. @@AgateDad
It is to bad that there is so much fake going on with product, I got scammed on a $100 worth of amber. The crecent moon shape in the 3rd one is cool even if you feel bad about you purchace.Take them put them face up in a stepping stone mold and incase them in concrete with some tumbled colored glass. If you seal them after it is all done I think you will like the result.
You should save these for the times when you are breaking in a new blade for the Hi-Tech, lol, so that the paint from the blade will transfer onto these specimens and not your real rocks LOL 😁
After watching tons of videos, yours and others, on YT, I decided to buy some rocks on eBay from China. I thought I was being cautious, and the first few lots were great! But then I fell in love with what they called Surya Agates. the pics were bright yellow and orange and green, some with crystals, lovely little things. But in reality, they are homely, brown rocks that I could pick up in the yard! Same for some pietersite I bought. They made all sorts of excuses. I guess they were photoshopped. I can't figure out how else they made them look so good. They did give me a partial refund, and I have some more coming in that will probably be as bad. No more! I've learned my lesson. Some Sellers lie! I know how disappointed you feel. It makes you sick on your stomach, doesn't it?
I was gifted one of these ammonites and could see pretty quickly that it was a real fossil but had been “enhanced” with a chisel. I still have it just because it’s pretty to look at as long as you don’t look too close 😅 That said, I hope the person who bought it for me didn’t pay much!
I do not know much about Ammonites. I had no idea they could have crystals in, or chambers. So I dit very much enjoyed this video because I learned something. But the disappointment in your eyes... ish, I feel for you.
Oh, that is just downright upsetting. They knew when they sold them that they were poor quality. I understand most people just buy the emanate for the way it is but like yourself you’d like to cut them open and show the spectacular inside and these are not that kind of quality they’re really pity, poor and you got taken and that is upsetting.😢😢😢😢
I'm so sorry - how disappointing for you, but definitely educational for your viewers. Thank you for sharing the video despite it not being full of "wow"s.
So they're not technically fake I'd say but definitely enhanced with some creative carving. I was expecting concrete inside! At least they DO look like ammonite fossils and not concrete but yeah I'd say you didn't exactly get what was advertised.
@@AgateDad I'm thinking they're just gone they're just very poorly preserved fossils. The center crystal structure is the right shape and looks like it follows the spiral so I'm thinking they are technically ammonites but, they were just very poorly preserved and then enhanced with the carving. They don't look completely fake but yeah... I dunno. If they were totally fabricated I wouldn't expect to see any structure resembling an ammonite. The structure IS there it just really sucks no chambers or definition and only a hint of a vague spiral. If they were completely fake I'd expect to see nothing inside or obvious signs of concrete or just being a plain old carved rock. Definitely not what they were being sold as though. Originally I'm guessing these only sort of resembled the original fossils and were obviously inferior specimens. So... They were carved. Unfortunately I hear this happens a lot with fossils from Morocco.
These ammonites are legit, they're simply poorly prepped. I myself collect ammonite specimens from triassic layers, and i've only ever found one specimen with calcite inside and never any with hollow chambers. If you want to cut ammonites, buy the ones from layers where they have chambers.
@@AgateDad Not entirely sure as the process of fossilisation is pretty complex. In my area, the ammonites that contain calcite are exclusively specimens that have been preserved by being encased in sediment. What i do know is that the preservation can vary a lot between spots that are just a few kilometers apart despite being from the exact same time period. Generally i would not buy anything from Ebay though, even though they are real, you can never be certain what is inside if you're not familiar with the layer they were found in. Hope you get luckier though.
I refuse to buy rocks from most places anymore, except from the rockhounders I watch on here and know they are for real. I did buy what was supposed to be an amethyst sphere off ebay once, totally fake, more of a fuchsia in color and you could tell that it was glass. Sorry you got taken like that. It really sucks.
I follow a young lady, she’s a geologist here in Arizona. Her handle is elleyknowsrocks. And she put put a video recently about man made rocks, a specific rock(I can’t remember the rock name) it was a yellow in color crystal looking rock. Not topaz. She was describing how to tell the difference. The reason I’m telling this is I was just shocked rock shops, or stores would be so deceiving. Stating it is a natural made rock and it being man made is the lowest of low. Sorry this happened to you. You’re not the only one scammed. This is happening in the states as well. Shameful.
wow u must have amazing eyes because i could not see a thing 🕵 and do not worry i will learn from your mistakes and i enjoyed the video but i cant believe that most of them are duds or man made.

Yeah, I agree. Something happened for them to be that way. I think it would be hard to fake. Cement would have been fake.

If they’re chiseled out of real matrix then the quartz doesn’t mean anything. Real ammonites have chambers inside.
they are called fossil casts. the fossil rotted away leaving a "mold" or cast of itself in the host rock. that fills with other minerals and solidifies. so they aren't exactly fossils, but they are natural, near perfect copies of the fossils exterior. the added chiseling was an attempt to recreate details that would have been there, but were lost in the process of forming.
I wanted to see the biggest one on left of the last 2 lol 😂. The curiosity would kill me. You win some you lose some ! ❤
That's kind of a bummer. I've had that happen to me before and I am kind of skeptical of ebay at times. Still a good video Taylor. You seem to make something good out of nothing. Looking forward to the next video. Take care.
It’s a vlog, gotta share it regardless of the results.
@@AgateDad I’m just impressed that you took it with a grain of salt and still showed it. I would have been a bit upset and probably would have been to pissed to continue. Great job.
Rotten luck Taylor. 😢 Definitely disheartening when you spend your money and not get the quality you're expecting. Thank you for educating us though. Still a great video!!!
I'm so sorry!
They could make good book ends with a proper base attached! ❤
me encantó que dijeras algunas palabras en español, jjaajjajaj "no bueno" jajjajaja...... dí algunas más en siguientes videos!!! saludos desde Buenos Aires, Argentina!
Sorry you got burned. Thanks for sharing.
It is what it is
Definitely real ammonites that have been worked.
That is unfortunate. Hope you can get the real deal and expose the precious ammolite crystals.
Someday
😅 enjoyed the share😊
What a bummer. At least you could laugh about it. I would try to get your money back. How's that sellers feedback? Im still happy you posted the video! 😊
So very sad to see that they were a disappointment. Given the swirl inside, they look real. It'd be such a waste to just toss them. Perhaps someone could mount them on a plague & use them for wall decor? That rough sandstone finish is very popular these days. Make lemonade out of those lemons, Cheers!
TRY TO GET SOME MATAGASKER AGATES TO CUT. VERY AWESOME !
Thanks Taylor. This is a very helpful video. Sorry you apparently got taken by this seller. Can’t stand stuff and people like that.
Yeah it’s hard to know if these are real or well crafted fakes
@AgateDad how did they fake them? The inside looks like real crystals and rock to me...same with the outside ridges. Just trying to understand how they did it.
Awww total bummer
wow I knew there was bunk fossils out there, I will watch for that with ammonites. I honestly expected some sort of chamber indents or evidence of them. Thanks for showing us that dude, those can get pricey.
for good cutting ammonites, you really only want the aragonite filled or pyrite ammonites. the rest dont really have that cool interiors.
I feel bad they were duds, but I still enjoyed watching you cut them.
Idk the mudballs can be kinda nice....sometimes theres subtle things in the mud
plus there isnt any suture marks of the connection of the shell
Bingo
man thats such a bummer id be pissed. oh there are some UK youtubers that go ammonite hunting and break the host rock with. they sell them where you can crack open your own ammonite that are real and not fake.
Yeah its so hard to understand what is going on with these. Buyers beware!
Thanks!
Thank you Kelly!
You should save these for the times when you are breaking in a new blade for the Hi-Tech, lol, so that the paint from the blade will transfer onto these specimens and not your real rocks LOL 😁
I was thinking of using them for batting practice but I have other plans with them now as the seller and I are working on fixing this.
I'm sorry you were swindled 🤨 some people are ruthless. Door stoppers? 😂
😅
Wait, are they fake ammonites or just not pretty inside?
Not totally sure tbh
Hey, at least they had some crystals. Sorry they were not what you wanted.
Place them on the ground in the garden bed. Its where my duds go.
When you held those two up at 7:18 they looked like owl eyes. Sad that you didn't get what you thought you were getting.
I was gifted one of these ammonites and could see pretty quickly that it was a real fossil but had been “enhanced” with a chisel. I still have it just because it’s pretty to look at as long as you don’t look too close 😅 That said, I hope the person who bought it for me didn’t pay much!
Concordo con la tua scelta di non aprire le ultime due ammoniti. E aspetto il prossimo video con le agate
The seller isn’t in the wrong IMO, I believe they were tricked too. I’m in communications with them right now and they’re being fair.
Dang - you live , you learn …
Haha. The closed captioning is a bit confused by the sound of the saw. [Applause] [Music].
That’s funny 😂
very pretty
I can't believe the amount of fakes everywhere now. I'm sorry this happened to you. Don't kick yourself, they were designed to deceive. ❤️🎸🏏
It is a good lesson to learn and the seller is being very accommodating.
I'm so sorry - how disappointing for you, but definitely educational for your viewers. Thank you for sharing the video despite it not being full of "wow"s.
I'm not an expert, but it looks like they have cast marks on the side as if they were put in a concrete mold.
Oh well.
So they're not technically fake I'd say but definitely enhanced with some creative carving. I was expecting concrete inside! At least they DO look like ammonite fossils and not concrete but yeah I'd say you didn't exactly get what was advertised.
Fair assumption but where are the chambers and suture lines?
Thanks for the info bud!
These ammonites are legit, they're simply poorly prepped. I myself collect ammonite specimens from triassic layers, and i've only ever found one specimen with calcite inside and never any with hollow chambers. If you want to cut ammonites, buy the ones from layers where they have chambers.
How does one know which ones those are?
They look like they were from a mold with host quartz surrounded by a manmade concretion. Cut them all!
No pint if they’re fake lol
I follow a young lady, she’s a geologist here in Arizona. Her handle is elleyknowsrocks. And she put put a video recently about man made rocks, a specific rock(I can’t remember the rock name) it was a yellow in color crystal looking rock. Not topaz. She was describing how to tell the difference. The reason I’m telling this is I was just shocked rock shops, or stores would be so deceiving. Stating it is a natural made rock and it being man made is the lowest of low. Sorry this happened to you. You’re not the only one scammed. This is happening in the states as well. Shameful.
Yorkshire Fossils know a thing or two, for future reference. They all look man made sad😢
I'm so sorry they were duds man. At least they look cool on the outside!
Someone did good work to make them look good lol
😂😂😂 Não comprem da Internet, ebay, Shopee, ou outro!
Turn them into bookends.
wow u must have amazing eyes because i could not see a thing 🕵 and do not worry i will learn from your mistakes and i enjoyed the video but i cant believe that most of them are duds or man made.
I have one here, but I don’t know if it’s real! My ex boss’s wife gave it yo me!
We've all been there.... Now, go out rock hounding and find yourself something pretty, like a nice piece of prorphery...
You’re going to love Mondays video lol
@@AgateDad Good job! You did find a beaut!!
