Hello! It's 2020, but I hope this helps, I used to blend with baby oil with my anime drawing back in highschool, around 2015 and after 5 years it's still the same. Nothing changed, no yellowings. I used cheap sketchbooks back then by the way :)

@@yichen5527 In my opinion yeah. I was broke back then so I tried baby oil and it works I didn't even knew you can use turpentine. This is safer I guess.
@@0SoulSanctuary0 turpentine probably dries faster? That’s probably the only difference one might see - which could certainly be an advantage for some people.

One thing that could prevent crumbs from smudging areas you want clean is masking fluid. Just paint the areas with it that you do not want any fallout on, let it dry, and start drawing with the oil pastels. Once you are finished with the piece, rub the masking fluid off the paper/canvas or use tweezers to remove it. You can also add a little bit of watercolor paint to the masking fluid in order to see where it has already been applied.
I've just started with oil pastels and frankly, losing the will to live with blending lol I shall give the baby oil a try! Thanks for sharing this video, it might just keep me alive! 🤣🤣🤣

I came here from your video about old pastels because I have pental 50pc pack, it's 5years old and pretty dry to blend. I used a very liquid coconut oil (I mean this bottle of mine never solidifies) and a softer brush since I didn't have baby oil and hard brush. The oil bled thru my 110gsm paper but it doesn't feel oily. I used colour pencils for some detailing. After following this tut I couldn't believe I made such a beautiful artwork from oil pastel, a medium that I really feared. Thank you so much

Hello Syndia. Thank you for making this video. Today I just got my Faber-Castelle set of oil pastels and they would not blend and would only rub off of the paper. I had such a terrible time. My husband suggested many tips and one of them was that maybe they were dried out. Your video inspired me to try again and the results are 100× better with the baby oil. I would've given up on oil pastels if it weren't for you and my husband. Thank you.

I'm having the same issue with that brand. I was wondering if I were rubbish or they were old. Probably a bit of both 🤣. That's what brought me here.

The brand is otherwise a good one, but the oil pastels are rubbish imho.
I really want to do oil pastel arts specially nature it makes me relax and reduces my stress
I am new to oil pastel and find using a blending stump works well without the problems I see here.

I have been doing similar tests and I am having some success protecting my white areas by hitting those spots with a white crayon, white oil pastel, or clear wax. Then any color which gets into the white zone can be washed away.

I now love oil pastels over most everything. I do water colour and pencil, and my set of pastels just sat there...until the day I opened their box. Yeah, she's excellent with them and agree with your request.

Just to answer your question...I did some oil pastel with baby oil on paper and canvas 20 years ago (I placed something sturdy under during the process with canvas no gesso on the canvas) and two of them were for my parents and they didn't change at all !
I loved this tutorial, esp. the detail you went into about sketching (I'm learning and like how you broke it into steps that CAN be MESSY (and that's OK!) and how to use the pastels and different shades of colors used - and why -- TY!

This is exactly how I started to do Oil Pastels, but with regular paint thinner. I started to use Baby Oil with regular Oil Paints, too...but still need to experiment with it, as first painting is looking dull...so, I am also experimenting with Soybean Oil for same purpose. I am too poor to purchase those items specifically made for Oil Pastels and Paints.
I just bought 2 packs of 24 Oil Pastels today, along with a pad of 11"x14" Canvas Paper. Now all I need to do is get my baby Oil out of storage.
But does oil paint dry after using baby oil? 🤔 I'm a beginner and so far i keep reading that using any oil (olive, baby oil, coconut, etc) makes it worse to dry.

Great tutorial, love watching you work. I have used baby oil before but, I don't have anything that I have done that is old enough for a test. I love how it all blended together so perfectly.
Yes it was very interesting to see how well it worked! I have a strong feeling that the colors would stay put for many many years. Oil pastels are very durable pigment wise (compared to watercolors for example). I don't think they're too finicky about blending mediums :o) I'll keep using it for sure.

Have you ever tried alcohol? Or a mineral spirit that dries slowly? Also, I think it would be good to prime the paper first before using a solvent so the oils in the pastel doesn't absorb into the paper to leave the pigment. Golden makes a special pastel gesso, but you probably already know that.
Waiting for my pastels to arrive in the mail this week. I already have Gamsol so I will use that AND ai have gesso so I will try that as well !!
I thought the pastel gesso was for CHALK pastels, to prep any surface to be able to use them.

well done...someone told me also to use oil pastel, i tried and it did blend well but i think i have used so much oil because the paper doesn't dry so well...i stopped painting and this pastel thing for a while(for being so busy), now i am fascinated to begin again..thank you

Why don’t the make oil pastels with a pointed tip like crayon so that it’s easier to get into small areas? I just ordered a set and when I got them the first thing I thought was that it would be kinda tough to get into small defined spaces. All I’ve ever used in my artwork are colored pencils, paint brushes, Neocolors, etc, all tools with pointed tips.
I've been able to erase the majority of smudged crumbs with a nylon eraser

I love the tray you keep your oil pastels in; what is it?
It's one of those tool kit trays you get at the hardware store (I think they are usually used to keep nails, screws and bolts in) :o)
I'm using the johnsons hair and scalp baby oil at moment I've tried both but the hair one is way better

Is that the cotton vellum mixed media sketchbook? Because I love it for graphite drawings so I wouldn't be surprised if it would work for pastels

I am a beginner and your videos are very helpful.:) Currently, I am trying to draw over oil pastel backgrounds with black graphite pencils. However, they are not giving me the matt look and finish, what I am looking for. is there any specific brand that I should try, or is there any technic which you can share with us by making a video. :)
Drawing over oil pastel doesn't work. You end up etching (carving out) the oil pastel pigment... it can be done if it's the look you are going for but it gives limited ''drawing options'' that's why I don't do it. Hope it helps :o)

Any paper will do but the thicker, the better :o) If you find the paper a little flimsy when you try to blend it's a sign you'd do better with a little thicker. But like I said, your paper should work fine. Hope it helps :o)

Hi! Syndia.....Soo I have an art competition coming up and iam supposed to paint on a canvas with oil pastels....which r not as buttery as senelier...Soo I was wondering if this baby oil blending technique works on canvas as well??..... waiting for ur reply❤️❤️
I would suggest to prep your canvas with multiple layers of gesso to get rid of some of the texture. Canvas has too much texture for oil pastels. You can use baby oil but use only the smallest amount at a time or else your colors will become a slimy mess. Only use the baby oil in areas that are very necessary and just a little bit. Good luck.

Yes, any paper is good but a mix media paper is the best cheap option as it is a little thicker than regular paper. Hope it helps :o)

How do you know that there is too much oil on the brush? For some reason, I can't get it right.
I basically take a drop on the corner of my brush as opposed to dipping the whole brush. When I feel that my brush starts to drag a little on the paper instead of gliding I dip it again just a little.

I ordered a special walnut oil for art, did I waste my money? Lol!
Some oils tend to yellow, test it on paper before drawing and let it dry for a couple weeks and you'll see if it does or not.

Not yet!
I think any organic oil would oxidise over time and go yellow. Mineral and Gamsol oil is not going to do this.
