Nice. The medium with its many shades of colour and direct application looks liberating. It allows for momentum when time is of the essence, especially recording outdoor imagery. Your surroundings look blissful.
Thanks for reviewing these, I recently treated myself to a set and they are so vibrant. I’d be fascinated to see you use these in your plein air sketchbooks while out in the wilds with Basil! I love all the beautiful sketches you create - whether charcoal, paint, oil sticks, graphite, pastels… you make the best of any art medium you take with you.
Thank you for the demonstration with oil pastels. The colours look nice and rich and the credit card is genius! Have their quick drying oils (you did a demo of them) and I’m very happy with them, nice addition with my regular brand.
Love it! My oil pastels (I use Sennelier) and Neocolor crayons melted once when I took them outside in the summer. I’ve stopped using them outdoors if the temp is above 65 F. I live in Tennessee, US so it gets humid here-I’m not sure what your weather was like that day, but I’m not surprised they started to sweat in the sun.
A very beautiful sketch of the landscape 😍👍 Pleasant and meditative work! Paul Rubens oil pastels are simply magnificent, reminiscent of Sennelier in quality.❤
Oil pastels work very well over a water colour underpainting. But also they can be manipulated and blended with solvent (turps, OMS etc). Either or both options deal with the problem of the medium leaving white spots. Also, they are good on smooth paper and can be pushed about with a rubberised tool and scraped back as shown in this video. I find them difficult but for some reason find myself drawn to them.
Hi Andrew ... This was a nice demonstration/sketch ... You showed how the pastels lend themselves well to building up different tones by layering colors over each other ... Perhaps a paper alittle smoother may help to blend better ... I have these pastels but have not used them so you've inspired me to give them a try! ... Love all the bird sounds in the background also ...
After applying linseed oil or thinner for blanding with oil pastels, could I apply fixative or varnish directly? How long should I wait for the linseed oil to dry before varnishing it? Does acrylic varnish work on linseed oil or thinner?
I'm not sure about applying fixative over linseed oil - varnish would work but it may lift off the oil pastels? I usually leave them without fixative or varnish. Let me know how you get on
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt I am almost on a blocked path because I see so many videos where they use thinner and linseed oil in pastel oils and then try to varnish it with acrylic VARNISH LIQUITEX. So oil rule is never acrylic on oil paint. I like oil pastel but a job without varnish or sealing it to prevent scratches or damage in the future is a bit tedious in this technique. What a pain, I love oil pastels but in the end I can't come up with the answer.
You may have re-converted me to oil pastels - mine are extremely old, the old Guitar brand (Japanese). These look much better - the melting would be the wax, which is a large component of oil pastel; the older they get, the more inclined they are to snap; so I must overcome my meanness, and invest in what looks like a very good product. If only we had unlimited resources, eh? I'd love to try Ceracolour, from Natural Pigments/Rublev; planning on trying casein; all the while keeping up my supplies of oil paint, and acrylic, and watercolour; the pencils, the pens, the supports.... specializing can get a bit boring, but it'd also be a hell of a lot cheaper.....
In my estimation, this video provides visual substantiation what what I have always felt about oil pastels as an art medium. And this is that it is quite an insensitive medium, and cannot produce well-controlled results because of its inability to be blended so that drawings are characterized by spotty unpleasant results. I've seen a lot of art in my long career, but have virtually never seen a really excellent artwork done in oil pastels. Because of the crudeness and insensitivity of oil pastels, artists would be much better served to stay with almost any other drawing medium.
There are many great artists who can really produce beautiful art with it. Check out Hamrib art or Yolanda Blazquez’s RUclips channel. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Not disagreeing with you that oil pastels are hard to control and blend, but I really recommend (hopefully it's not a crappy move to recommend one artist on the channel of another 😅) you check out Yolanda Blazquez's oil pastel paintings.
I love the garden sounds. It adds to an understanding of the landscape
Thank you very much 😃
Thank you Andrew for this oil pastel demonstration. The result is nice.
My pleasure Jacqueline

Bird sounds wonderful!❤

Very vibrant. These seem to be good pigmented and it looks that they go down on the paper pretty smoothly.
Yes they’re pretty good 😊
REALLY LOVED your decision to paint outdoors. so relaxing.. great job loved every minute!😀

Really interesting, I like the look of the pastels, and they are a good price! Your garden is lovely and peaceful 😀

@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Fantastic, I’ll look forward to that!
Andrew just love your review, especially the written information and you have convinced me to purchase them, thank you.
Glad you like them Laurel - hope you enjoy using them
I have a couple of sets of these, love them, love the bullet tips and the creaminess, it’s like painting with lipstick!
That’s very true 😃
I like your style of drawing. Great use of the credit card. I’m going to have to try that!
Thank you very much - have fun and enjoy your art
Wow love how you work those pastels not tried oils before
Thank you so much Denise 😀
I LOVE YOUR PICTURE BRAVO!!!

You’re welcome . I found them really nice to use. Much softer and easier to use than others I’ve tried
This was really pleasant to watch, I might get me a set of those too :)
Thank you Rosie - I think you will enjoy them

It was very hot that day so probably not a good idea to have them in full sun
Hello Andrew.
Ive missed seeing you on youtube. Great to see you at the artwork again.☘️
Thank you so much 😀
I should have a bit more time now. Been very busy lately with things that have taken up a lot of time
A very beautiful sketch of the landscape 😍👍 Pleasant and meditative work!

Thank you very much. I agree, the Rubens oil pastels are very good
I’ve seen a few reviews of these and if you push them on the bottom in the tray they just pop up. Lovely landscape with beautiful colours!❤
That's a great idea! I did struggle getting them out 😃

Hi Nancy
Thank you very much 😃
I enjoyed my time sketching in the garden with these oil pastels. Hope you have as much fun with yours
Nice comparison. Would you test these pastels also on toned paper?
Meanwhile in the background: dunnock, collared dove, house sparrow and carrion crow
Thank you. Yes I could try toned paper. Well done for hearing the Dunnock - he’s my favourite garden visitor 😃

I bought a smaller set of Paul R. oil pastels and the wrappers are very oily! I'm concerned about the oil leaching out on my art work...
I thought they handled very well but I too found them quite oily. Only time will tell. I will use them for sketching but probably not finished work
Yo ya los tengo y están bonitos
Yes they are very nice 👍🏻
Can use on canvas and does it fix?
Yes you can use on canvas but I’m not sure how to fix it

Thanks Robert. That would definitely explain the melting in the sun. You’re right about all the materials we like to try 😃

those seem bizarrely hard for paul rubens pastels
I found them to be very soft compared to other oil pastels brands. They went even softer when the sun was on them. They almost felt like oil sticks

You need to try sennelier oil pastels very soft and you can get oil painting type effects and they are so creamy the blend easily
