I use a wash 'sleeve' connected to a hose. It takes about 20L to completely clean a roller.
I have 2 tubes (sleeves). One for short nap and the other for 10-15mm.
It only takes a few min to do the job.
Depending on what type of roller sleeve but I would use about the same amount of water.

This works well if you have a hose and a field. Trying to clean a roller and tray indoors in a tiny sink is a lot less fun!
Yes sinks are not so good to use but you can do it that way.

Being science trained I observed in my experience that it’s a matter of introducing water and having it removed which cleans best. Like flooding the roller leaves a static layer of paint which won’t easily go. Try this. Have the roller with a end cap upright after initial cleaning and run the finest drizzle of water on the top. It will get into the nap and be transported out efficiently and get very clean without having to actively squeeze etc. a harsh flow of water will flood the outside and be less efficient. But yes a few runs of the slosh and roll is needed to get the bulk off

some guys do this when its in a sink.
I wish my naps looked as good as yours after a round of painting (meaning once the paint has been removed). I guess I am applying too much pressure when I apply the roller to the wall?
The nap should be ok after washing, this is a lambs wool roller sleeve, they can vary a bit on how they look.

I hate cleaning rollers always messy, I have done it that way and still get covered it water, I find it just as easy to throw them away and get new ones
It will depend on how much you pay for a roller sleeves, the ones I use cost from $30 to $50 each. Throwing them away wouldn't make sense but yes if you use cheap rollers it can be more time effective to throw them away.

is it safe using soap or some sort of shampoo? or will this affect the roller and next paintjob
That should be fine as long as you give it a good rinse.

I Like To Use a Bucket To clean The Roller With The Spinner. And Make Sure The Roller Tray Is Fully Covered With Wet Paint After You finish And let That Dry But Make Sure It's a Water Based Paint on Say a New Roller Tray And After Maybe Ten Times Using That Roller Tray You Can Peel The Ten Coats Straight Off And It's Just like a New Roller Tray as You Probably know That's Just Me I Like To Keep Everything Clean as Possible.
That is one way of doing it and not a bad way but I just find for me its better to wash the tray out so its dry to use again. I peel the paint off the tray when the paint is thick enough to do so.

if i’m using the same colour paint i keep the roller in the paint with lid on.
When you are using the same colour the following day it is a good idea to that or wrap it in plastic, as long as you keep the air out it will be fine.

You don't just spin it out once you do it a couple of times and stand up rest the tray on your legs put it so the part of the tray were you put the paint is facing down and spin it out that way so you don't get wet and soak it every time before you spin it out

Hey mate a quick question, are the Dulux excellence 18mm a good choice for walls? I find the Dulux excellence 11mm just don’t hold enough paint unless doing a feature wall where I don’t want alot of stipple. What do you use
I use 14mm nap is the normal size I use, the brand is superior lambs wool covers.

There’s probably a nice lake just past those trees to wash it in…😅
I would have gone there but too many other painters washing their stuff out there.
Hi .What is that scraping tool called please?Just so I don't look like a total fool when i go to Bunnings ,or my local Hardware store.Cheers mate!
They have different names, 7 in 1 tool/ scraper or some times a 5 in 1 tool. So maybe ask for a 7 in 1 paint scraper, that should work and see if they sell grinding sparks while you are there.

This is a good way to contaminate the ground. Well done.
I doubt there is much to worry about. There is maybe 50 ml of paint left in a roller if its fully cleaned mechanically first. Most of that is water, and the bright white is titanium dioxide, which is inert. The acrylic monomers are diluted with a lot of water, and probably biodegrade in the soil. If you *dont* wash the rollers you have to buy a new one. Then you have to account for the energy and pollution created in manufacturing it, plus more landfill. Also, considering home owners paint maybe once every 10 years, thats a lot of time for the soil organisms to degrade it. Better anyway than flushing it down the drain, which Im sure a lot of people do.
The accidental release measure for Titanium Dioxide is: Personal precautions
Avoid inhalation of dust by arranging adequate ventilation, or use an appropriate dust mask. Avoid excessive contact with the skin. Use appropriate personal protective equipment.
Emergency procedures
Pick up spills and place in a suitable container for reclamation or disposal, using a method that does not generate dust (e.g. vacuum, sweeping) Ventilate area of leak or spill. Keep unauthorized personnel away.
6.2. Environmental precautions
Avoid dust dispersion to the environment. Prevent leakages from entering drains and ditches that lead to natural waterways.
I’m not a save the earth activist. I’m letting you know you are displaying video and written evidence that you are braking the law and could result in a fine or a jail term. I appreciate that your aim is to advertise you are the expert advisor in this field but it is better to demonstrate it with safety in mind as when people watch this video they will not be handing you that big Job and all the good work you did presenting the video is wasted. I would scrap this video or edit it then the right people will give you the credit for the right reasons. This is not a criticism I’m letting you know that if I notice it then how many others. Good luck
Mark Ellis I'm not an expert, nor even a professional painter. Nor am I the original poster, as you seem to believe. I am a bit of a greeny, and do have concern about the effects of these chemicals. Given that people WILL clean out their rollers, the choice is between the ground, and the drain. I believe the ground is the better choice for the reasons stated. Out of sight, out of mind is hardly a rational policy.
Its better on the ground then washing it down the sink in to the ocean.

Mark Ellis Not a correct statement for latex paint.
Hose spin it is best
hose spin is ok as long as you check to make sure all paint is out.

Hose spin it on extension pole is best cleans it faster then what you doing also once it spun clean you get shelve of frame check insides and house spin again done.@@howtopaintinfo
I had to laugh at bunnings the other day - cheapie trays - $3.99, cheapie tray protectors $3.59...even the cheap ones clean up nicely with some water..so why double or triple the cost by using protectors??
That's a classic, I don't understand tray protectors, maybe if using oil based paint but besides that a waste of time i think.

If you are doing this commercially...its a waist of time...let the customer pay for the rollers in your quote then discard them once used...if diying then again i personally would discard them as how often does one paint a room..a house..a wall etc...its normally years before its done again...and.by that time the so called cleaned roller is probably not in the best condition to use anyway.
The roller sleeves I use (lambs wool) cost about $40 each and do wash out very easily. There are other types that do take longer to wash out which you could class as border line to wash out or throw away due to cost. Cheap rollers don't necessarily give you a good finish so it's up to the individual what they choose either a good quality sleeve or a cheap throw away sleeve. I still have worn down rollers that I have had for a long time, they are still fine to use, I keep these for oil paint then throw them away after.

Man....I come here for the comedy acts and NEVER get disappointed.
U shouldn’t use a 5 in 1 to scrape the paint out of the skin.. you’ll only get half the life out of the skin doing it..
I have never had an issue using one, just don't press too hard and hold on a slight angle so it doesn't dig in and you should be fine.

All that paint from your washing video being dumped blindly into the grass and then entering our ground water/drinking water doesn't seem very intelligent . Do you drink well water on your property?
Firstly its water based paint and also when you are washing out there should be minimal paint in the roller. I'm sure the soil would be enough to filter out the paint partials long before it got to ground water, that's even if it made it that far.

Yes, on that lot, painting is going on 365 days a year, that means on average 2 roller cleanings a day, well you do the math. Better call the EPA now.
1800's cleaning style . cleans roller 20 times and its still not clean ,,, 'its ok' 🤦♂️
