5 minutes into the video: I am now realizing he is not a bald man wearing a headband.
lol yea, me too
hahaaaaa, me to!!!!
And me lol
You’re half right lol pretty annoying ugly hat
He is bold
This is the best condensed real talk on the Keto diet I have heard and totally explains why I failed at it. Thanks Tim! Also hat.
As someone who's done both diets, here is my two cents.
Slow-Carb Diet;
Starting Weight: 100kgs
I was eating legumes three times a day, usually with marinara sauce and chicken thigh. Followed the diet strictly. No 'fast' carbs. I managed to get down to about 85kgs, but could not get any lower than that no matter how hard I tried. However, I found this diet extremely difficult after a few months, even with the 'cheat day' which seemed to do nothing but just spark more carb+sugar cravings throughout the week. Also, I was inarguably getting a cold and flu every 3-4 weeks. I don't know why, but I was. At least once a month, summer, winter, it didn't matter, I was ALWAYS getting sick.
In short, the slow carb diet helped me lose about 15 kgs, but was extremely difficult to adhere to, and considering how low the fat content was, and how high the carb content was, I'd be absolutely fucking starving 30 minutes after my meals. And again, I kept getting sick no matter how warm or cold I was.
Keto Diet;
Starting weight 90Kgs (Came back from a holiday)
I started off eating three times a day, usually meat protein, with green veggies and mostly fat (butter, cream cheese, lard, bacon etc) and I was full after all my meals. I never got those post-meal carb cravings. At first my weight wasn't moving, and I thought this must be too good to be true. I'm eating all these incredibly delicious and satiating foods, and I'm not losing weight. Fast forward about 2 weeks, and five kilos literally disappeared. I didn't eat less, I didn't exercise and more than what I was doing before. I was really confused. Then another two kilos. Then another. All of a sudden I'm 78kgs, and have this mental clarity that I've literally never experienced before. Intermittent fasting pretty much happened inadvertently, by accident pretty much because my hunger levels plummeted.
Long story short, I have never felt more in control of my metabolism, health, and weight than what I have in ketosis. I have said goodbye to my antidepressants, I no longer get those afternoon crashes, and I have not been sick once in the 8 months I've been in ketosis Sure, the slow carb diet would probably be great for someone who very sensitive to insulin. But ill never be going back to the glucose-insulin rollercoaster that is a high carb diet. Biased? hell yes I am. Keto worked for me, Slow-Carb did too, but was not sustainable long term for me.
Nicely worded. You have the benefit of also trying both and I think its 50% willingness to learn about the processes of Ketones in the body and how to keep those in check, the other half is learning to vary meals while also staying LCHF. Keto worked for me.
I lost 24kg doing Keto and after the initial 3 weeks or so of learning what I could and couldn't eat; it was the easiest thing in the world to do. Sure, I couldn't drink beer or eat chocolate; but a funny thing happened - I didn't crave it. That's the thing that has kept me always returning to a Ketogenic diet when I have had a turbulent few months of weight flux.
I would say to people that you should try both and see which works. They both have proven effects on the body, but the psychological component is a big factor in this. My sweet tooth has been 100% averted through constant control and eating the right food. No other diet has worked for me like a Ketogenic diet. The weight loss is now a by-product. The mental clarity, the energy, the feeling of overall wellness in body and mind is why Keto is so good.
Xander yes indeed. I think a good understanding of what’s happening to your body in ketosis is a really good motivator and helps you understand why you’re eating the way you are. I also get what you’re saying regarding the beer and chocolate. I just don’t desire those foods anymore. At all. It’s like “well, I could eat that pizza/ice cream and feel like shit for hours/days, or I could just eat this delicious pork and beef mince with cheese and avocado that I probably won’t be able to finish and still feel fucking amazing.”
Inspirational. Thanks for the detailed review of both lifestyles. I am thinking of the keto diet. Slow carb didn't do it for me. I had massive crashes after 3 weeks. I tried another 4 or so before I had to give up. Tried starting it a couple of times again. Keto seems pretty solid, delicious and I cannot see many disadvantages, besides not being able to drink beer maybe.
Thanks again, man. Any recommendations for good keto books by any chance?
Honestly, I'd say that Reddit's Keto subreddit is great. Full of real stories by real people who offer genuine help and post really insightful things. Any books by Gary Taubes, articles and studies/books by Dominic D'Agostino and Jason Fung's books on intermittent fasting. IBreatheImHungry.com is a good site for recipes and a blog by a keto eater, too. I know you're not actually asking ME per se, but that's what I would say to a new Keto'er.
Xander appreciate all the tips and help. Thanks a bunch for your answer and help. Will check out that subreddit and all the resources you recommended. It seems so easy to get thrown out of ketosis, so it seems having something to stick to is Hella important. Thanks again, man. Seriously appreciate it!
This is the best non-biased information I have come across about the Keto diet. Also explains why I haven't been able to lose any weight on the Keto diet. I just don't have the tools, the time, or the will to be that precise on macronutrients as required by the Keto diet.
Jesus, this is the most concise and thoroughly explained video on the topic of Slow Carb vs. Ketogenic and folks go off on tangents about a fucking hat or
other inanities. This is the kind of content that's made me a long time fan, Tim. Thank you.
Totally agree!!!
when you realize it's not a headband 🤔
Holy shit!
Why I only clicked was because I thought he was wearing a headband lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 wow!
Not the best choice of color for a hat 🧢 for sure.
😂
I successfully did the slow-carb diet three years ago after a back surgery and lost almost 30 lbs. I managed to keep it off for almost an entire year but made some bad choices. I attempted it again after a second back surgery and had to deal with some stomach issues I contribute to eating too many legumes. It is a very easy diet to achieve and will be doing it again soon. The key to the slow-carb diet is sticking to diet plan and going all out on cheat days.
What were your macros On the slow carb diet
It was very easy to maintain until i got into a new relationship lol. The dates, eating out - the newness of it all throws you off schedule and once off its so hard to get back on
I prefer the slow-carb diet because it is easier to follow; a simple protocol that I can immediately follow without further studying anything in depth.
I've lost 85lbs and have kept it off for three years now on 4hb. So wether you agree with this video or not. Tim knows his shit.
No one said slow carb doesn't work!
Re-discovered this video today. First of, thx for all the valuable content you create for us. It would be nice to see maybe an updated version on this video, and possibly even how a slow-carb week/diet looks like for you in terms of meals, just to get an idea.
Anywayz, thank you. 🙏✨
The trick with the ketogenic diet is to combine it with intermittent fasting and go from 3 meals to 2 meals to 1 meal a day so that you're fasting for nearly 24 hours a day. It's hard NOT to be in ketosis when you do that. Doing this I lost 18 kgs in 9 weeks with only occasional walking as exercise.
What about the period in wich your body is getting fat adapted? Once i enter ketosis I'm weak and hungry unless i fill my belly with vegetables
@@stefanul same here!
@@stefanul are u making sure u r giving the right fuel! : D when I first started it there was some mistakes I personally did!! : D such as I took too much tea and coffee and it made me kinda bloated, depleted my nutrients, raised cortisol! Also too much fiber it also made me bloated bcz of my low stomach acid! : D since protein also trigger insulin I was afraid of consuming but when I had things that provided me nutrients such as carnivore along with keto it helped so much! : D for me personally! : D more energetic and gut health improved so much! : D I rly couldn't go with fiber and plant base ! :)) I now have moderate protein such as eggs, meat along with a good amount of ghee and fats! : D and slowly trying to have just a little fiber such as avocado or something that's easier digesting! :)) U might wanna take a bit more fat if u r hungry if possible! : D and some salt and electrolytes for that nice energy! : D
Can you do any weight training on it?
I was on Keto for 3 months losing weight but feeling terrible having issues with salt and electrolytes so I’m going to slow carb and working out more I’ll be watching all your videos :)
Maybe it depends on the person. I have been on the keto diet for over 25 years and I've been in perfect health ever since I started it. No health problems at all and great energy and mood.
what sux with me is I was born with a heart defect that needed open heart surgery in order to get my blood flow flowing correctly. So when I go on Keto if I don't keep up with my potassium and salt or if maybe I feel I'm maybe getting to much sodium i get heart arrhythmias of slow heart to palpitations to elevated heart rate. so I get arrhythmia more often on keto then when I'm eating carbs. I get arrhythmia even when im not on keto but I get more arrhythmia episodes when I was on keto. but what sux I've only been able to lose weight doing keto. it was just the only diet that was easy to do cause my craving were more in control doing keto so I don't o er eat. I really wish I didn't have arrhythmia problems so I can drop more weight. I'm getting tempted to get off keto after a bad episode I had today but I feel fine now it only last like 1 to 2 minutes but when it happen I get so panic that I feel I'm going to die. really sux. imma study more on the slow car diet.
Do you have an update on your change to slow carb?
I read your book. I can't do slow-carb diet as I have issues with legumes and when I did it, only lost 5 lbs. Keto and extended fasting is what's been successful for me - so far lost 50 lbs since June. Plan on doing LCHF once I get to goal weight.
Excellent!
I know someone who actually has glycemic response from coconut oil, enough to knock her out of ketosis! Idiosyncratic for sure but highlights the necessity of testing your individual response to what you are eating.
I'm just here for the hat. Didn't hear anything you said
ornivb same
I agree with this.
I was strict keto but was actually getting malnourished because I wasn’t doing it right
It’s very hard to get it perfectly right, and could have dangerous consequences if you don’t
I RECOMMEND THOMAS DELAUER VIDEOS IS A GOOD DIET IS YOU KNOW HOW IT WORKS 💪 VERY HEALTHY FOODS NOT GARBAGE FOODS

DR. BERG HE IS GREAT IN THE KETO DIET
I've been doing dirty keto for since March, with like a month and a half that I had to stop due to plateauing and also the price of meat going up and inflation causing my work to slow down a lot. I couldn't afford it for a little while. I've been back on dirty keto for almost a week. I can say for certain that my cognitive function is definitely better, my depression and anxiety level have plummeted, and I've already lost over 5lbs. Basically, I just make sure to stay under 30g of net carbs per day. The truth is, I don't even know if I'm in ketosis or not because I don't have testing devices. What I DO know is how much better I feel, weight is falling off, my mental health has improved, and as gross as this may sound, I'm having much more regular bowel movements. When eating sugar and carbs, I'm on the toilet 3 or sometimes even 4 times in a day. Doing dirty keto, it's once per day, solid, and sometimes only once every other day. Whatever is going on, it seems to be working great for me.

By following these methods, I have already lost 32 pounds since January 27, 2020 ... starting with 270. Leto is not just a diet, for me it is a life-saving lifestyle! I'm going for the next 30 pounds!

Keto vs Slow Carb :
1. Keto is hard to hack but accurate ( 75% fat , 1-4% carbs , 20% protein is difficult for most people to hit )
2.If you get keto wrong your blood lipid profile can be wacked up
3. Slow carb is easier to follow and has more compliance rate
4. Slow carb is more thermogenic( due to legumes) , and more compatible with power training ( as some glucose in the system ) -can result in more fat loss
Hack to cognitive keto effect:
>On a low carb / fasting day use exogenous ketones with caffeine (keto force)
I have to say this is one of the most useful and direct videos I've seen. Thank you.
i keep failing on keto so sad :( i also tried this slow carb diet and its just not working for me, good thing someone suggested i try the agoge diet that makes personalized diets. thats the only thing that worked for me. i started losing weight and is not going back to my pre pregnancy body, never been so happy :)

BLESSINGS
I mostly agree with all of this. I do think slow carb is probably easier for most. But keto for me was where I saw success. Now about to hit the 1.5 year mark. For me slow carb didn't do much in terms of weight loss. I will say between trying both I learned a lot more about nutrition in general so maybe that had a lot to do with it.
I will be watching all your videos..ty
There must be something severely wrong with me, I often hear the "ketosis is hard to follow" or how boring it is....
And I am here, ketosis is the only thing I have been able to follow for more than a few weeks, ketosis is the only thing I can follow without constantly haveing to use all my willpower.
And where is the boring part? Oh I can't eat bread? Bread is ok, and freshly baked still smells delicious, but I can live without. I can't have fries? that might be the worst, but its not that bad. potatoes, rice? they are good for options for side dish, but nothing you cant live without....
Sure there is a lot of stuff you can't have, but why focus on that? I don't care. the things I CAN have is good. I eats lots of salads, or make some wok fried veggies for sides, or maybe some great cauliflower mash. I eat good meats, fatty and tasty. I often get bacon and or cheese.
The things I CAN eat are delicious, and not boring in any way, I don't know where you get that from....
And as I seen others mention too, the IF comes almost by it self. I never eat more than twice a day, the last week I only ate once. I haven't tried longer fasts yet, but might try it, going 24 is a breeze on keto.
And best of all, the scale just goes down. and man it has been many years since it did anything but go up. and I have stuck to it since easter, and don't see myself falling off anytime soon (or ever)
Krydolph ...agree on all points. Eating fat is very satisfying. And if you run out of it your body will turn to its stored fat. On any carbohydrate diet fast or slow, you get ravenous hunger pangs when you run out of it. Ill stick to keto. 21 pounds lost since January without exercise and 7% decrease in body fat.. I would say every person needs to find what works for them and I disagree on his 90% failure rate on keto.
Yeah, I'm with you here. I mean, I have zero cravings to anything besides vegetables. I have been doing it for only a couple of weeks but it's the easiest thing to follow. I think the main issue here is people don't track their macros. I have been doing it for years. I only did it to combat the summer brain I suffer from every single summer, where I feel lethargic and undriven, and I don't see a reason to stop as of yet. I feel fantastic but I am, by my nature, waiting for some bad to come along. I did face an uncomfortable issue with bowel movements but it's resolved now. Anytime you make a drastic change to your diet, you will end up with either too much coming or not enough.
I'm with you. Keto is super easy for me. The pounds just fell off without the need to count calories. I dropped 40 pounds in 3 months and stabilized at my ideal weight. I still find it amazing that I can eat until I am no longer hungry, feel completely satiated throughout the day, and not put on excess fat. Before that, I spent years being constantly hungry, while trying to use a calorie counting app to calculate when I need to stop eating, and I lost no weight. As well as keto has worked for me, I also understand it's not for everyone.
Krydolph I'm the same. Just been doing lazy keto for a month and down 16 pounds. Just keep my net carbs below 20, eat enough protein (which comes naturally to me as I love meat and eggs), drink plenty of water, and increase my electrolytes. Ez pz.
Only diet I've ever been on that has seemed easy to stick to and makes me feel satisfied....which is saying a lot because I was a HUUUUGE sugar addict. Probably drank close to 2 liters of soda a day. I don't even miss it after just one month.
endocry. Great to hear - keep it up :) I have not been able to drop my sodas yet, but no smoking, no drinking, and now no sugar - I must be allowed something fun right :P
But I know, from back when I went from normal soda to sugarfree, I lost 10kg, just by doing that.... but ofc, they came back on later + a lot more.
Funny how you give up a big sugar source like that, and see the result, and never do the math yourself... I was laughing at "lowcarbo" and stoneage diet and stuff like that... Never cared to look into it, just took it as "just another diet for desperate women" :)
Now I can only regret not doing this a lot earlier, but a big thing is motivation, and the stars really aligned with me being top motivated just as I saw the right video that it sold it with the right words for me... (Like, not being hungry, I was sure I had a defect that made me incapable of being satiated)

I've been doing Keto for a few months . . . I plan to eat this way forever. Delicious & healthy.
I don't count carbs, because if you cut out sugar & processed foods you will be on track.
But because of the negative input in the above video, I sat down and counted the NET carbs I consumed today . . . and it was a NET of 52.5 carbs.
Keto daily goal is below 50 net carbs.
Close enough. Below is the list of what I ate today and Net carbs (carbs minus fiber):
LATE BREAKFAST (I like to wait a bit for breakfast to give my system a rest if not hungry)
Cup of cooked Quinoa = 27 grams carbs less 9 grams fiber (6 tsp pwder fiber) = 18 Net carb
Sprinkling of Keto granola = 2 grams net carbs
Coffee with cream = 0.5 g of carbs
1/2 Orange = 9 grams carbs less 2 grams fiber = 7 g net carbs
MID AFTERNOON
1/4 C cashews = 9g carbs less 1g fiber = 8g net carbs
Small slice of ham = 0 carbs
DINNER
2 C mixed veggie salad = 20g carbs less 8g fiber = 12 net carbs
1/2 C. cooked squash = 8g carbs less 3 fiber = 5 Net carbs
Fish with butter sauce = no carbs
TOMORROW will be less carbs for breakfast.
I will have my favorite breakfast of 1 slice bacon (0 carbs) with a scrambled egg (0.6 carbs) cooked with 1C string beans (4.3 net carbs) = 5 grams net carbs rather than the 20 net carbs today in the Quinoa & granola.
So, tomorrow I will add in a snack of Greek yogurt (0 net carbs) with a sprinkling of Blueberries and Keto granola . . . and I won't count carbs because I know I'm OK as long as I cut out processed foods and most sugars. Sure, I will still get bits of sugar that is in BB-Q sauce, etc. but the Keto diet IS wonderfully healthy, delicious and the natural fats will keep you feeling full.
BTW: check out the amount of FIBER in the above example of my daily Keto carb to fiber calcs. I add fiber pwder to high-carb foods to tamp down sugar spikes.
I consumed 23 grams of Fiber today . . . very good amount compared to average American diet of 15 grams of fiber per day. Fiber feeds your biome, sugar kills the biome.
i find that you can maintain ketosis by making up with intermittent fasting while doing ketogenic... so this way you can be a lot less strict... eating once or twice a day in a 5 hour window works ok... this is called metabolic flexibility... you use both fat and carbs well whenever they are thrown at you
Moises Vasquez
This. Ive started doing this for two weeks now, not 5 hour window, more like 8 to 11 hour interval! But i don't feel cravings anymore, I think its best to get started with a absolute water fast ( can have green tea/coffee with coconut oil) this gets you ready for ketosis and atleast for me, worked like a reboot allowing me to easily switch diet and time interval
If you're consuming tea or coffee especially with coconut oil it's not a water fast. A water fast is just water...
well, duh! It just easier to explain it this way. imho.
Omg i hv bn gaining weight on keto cos there r hidden sugars in foods i eat when im out. Im soooo happy i found you! Thank u. I am switching as of today!

Great vid. I have done both exactly.
Great info for the time this was filmed BUT some things are out-of-date for 2022. A lot more has been discovered since. I am going to see if Tim has made an updated video.
What are your thoughts now?
What about the contrast between very early protein slug vs the "intermittent fasting" plan to delay first meal? How to decide which way togo?
Okay, possibly a dumb question: we are supposed to avoid white food on this diet, but does that also include beans that are white? Such as cannelloni beans, chicpeas, and butter beans? They're white but also in the legume family.
Great video. Very helpful!
the fact that the slow carb diet has one cheat day a week has kept me on it easy for 3 months
Been struggling with this very issue. Thank you for posting a video on it and sharing your thoughts.
I've been doing Keto for over a year and would have to agree with Tim. Unless you have OCD tendencies ( I do) it's going to be tough.
Quick Slow Carb Diet Question!
Can I eat 5 meals a day as long as they’re spaced out by 4 hours each? I’m up at 5am, breakfast by 5:30am. If I eat every 4 hours, I could have a 5th meal at 9:30pm, and I’m often hungry at that hour. May I eat a 5th meal or should I not? My meals are chicken breast, fat free refried beans, fresh cabbage and salsa, every meal. Plus a pint of cottage cheese every other day. May I eat that 5th meal if I’m hungry?
You, sir, are amazing, I love the detailed, useful information and the clear delivery, please keep this up.
and the hat is fucking phenomenal! Never take it off!
Thank you, Tim.
Hi Tim, I have heard that beans have a estrogenic effect on the body. Is this true? Also, I work the night shift. Do you have any recommendations for preventing long term damage to the body? Finally, I started the year at 193 and am now down to 176 using the four hour body diet. This is something I can do for the rest of my life. Thanks again.
Hi Tim
Firstly thankyou .Your knowledge and wisdom is incredible.
Secondly I watched this video with great interest- I have no idea what you are talking about- however I'm going to find out and learn and that's why I love your videos and pod casts .My kindness

Keto helped to slim down 6kg from 53 to 47. Then, 19 hours daily fasting really helped me to shed the stubborn tum fat of 1kg. Every morning, I took keto matcha and 5 mct pills until noon. All eating thing between noon-5pm. Btw, so much enjoyed your book, the Tools of Titans.
Yes! The best diet is the one you can sustain.
❤❤❤
I've tried to do low carb...higher protein with higher fats...but my LDL and total cholesterol is now high according to labs lipid panel. Some say it's more about the cholesterol particle size but unfortunately insurance companies don't care bout that
Thank you for sharing! I’m very curious about the cognitive, spiritual boost in energy benefits of keto diet
Money making, on you tube, is what Tim is really good at.
Thank u Tim, for every thing you do
Great points -- the goal of ketosis is to burn stored fat, so when I go into ketosis I know in the short term it's going to feel like I'm consuming a lot of calories (from fat), but long term my appetite is going to disappear and those prolonged fasts will just come naturally. But this doesn't work if you're slugging down bulletproof coffees every 4 hours.
will the slow carb diet work without the cheat day? i dont want to go back to junk food addiction.
its good to confuse your metabolism with the carbs once a week...just dont go overboard
Interesting, however, you did not define what "slow carb" actually is, for those who havent heard that term before.

I do want to give this a try, i have some sort of inflammitation on my lungs and am rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed, but i also doo full ironmans and train aerobically and at gym 10-15hr/week... can i allow myself to drink calories on my hardest training days? cant train more than 7-10 hrs if i need to restrict that... or all the trianing would be very low aerobic and not aimed to build fitness...
I wish I had watched this vid years ago! Now I know why I failed keto the 2nd time. After trying keto a 2nd time, I realized that I can't absorb fats well and they go right through me, which is unfortunate during a keto diet. I'm trying to fix my metabolism and digestive with a plant based diet, but if I can't lose weight after a while, I'm gonna give slow-carb a try.
So much great info! Thank you Tim!!
thank you for the explanation and for taking the time to make this video.
I have been waiting for this video for the longest time! Thank you Tim!!
Iam with you on this.. Thanks :) slow carb works for me :)
OMG best info on Keto diet yet. One thing I have realized, that people with a lifetime of eating sugar/carbs have a very hard time sticking to it, so they give themselves too many chicken wings, for example (protein) or too many free meals to reward themselves, VERY VERY hard to accomplish, way too much yo-yoing in and out, even if you do get it right. Also very few people are going to stick to it for life, so what do you get if say you acccomplish for a whole month and loose 20lbs? the day you go out of Ketosis you start gaining, very fast!
Slow carb always worked best for me. I was able to lose 30lbs in 2-3months a few years ago. I was able to keep it off when I stayed away from high carbs/processed foods. I’m doing IF and cruise control(anti inflammatory diet) Slower weight lost but not catching any colds. I like both diets!
I may do slow carb for a month to knock off 10lbs. Luv slow carb
Michelle Munoz I’m looking to get into slow carbs diet, I’m having trouble putting together on how portion am I suppose to be consuming on the slow carbs day, any information would help. Thanks
tim.blog/2007/04/06/how-to-lose-20-lbs-of-fat-in-30-days-without-doing-any-exercise/
I followed his blog here! My meals are pretty big like Half my plate is steamed veggies, 1/2 cup of beans and a protein (4oz). Eat 30 mins after waking up 30grams of protein. I would eat 3-4 meals a days every 4 hours no snacking. Unless it’s veggies.
It takes time to get used to but drink a lot of water. You will see results quick.
I wish the keto people were open minded like this great speaker. What a fantastic talk! I personally like following a slow carb kind of diet. I would do keto but because I'm pescetarian (due to my own ethical reasons) it would not be practical for me at all. Thus, I get my protein from fish, eggs, dairy, beans/legumes, nuts/seeds and some grains. (I used to eat mussels but they contain high levels of heavy metals due to pollution of the ocean).
I think the fear-mongering behind the keto and vegan diets isn't helpful to anyone. A balance of micronutrients far exceeds the importance of macronutrients, save from diets extremely high in protein or low fat. People should get at least 15% of their calories from fat. The Institute of Medicine and the AHA (yes, they actually got something right) recommend 30% to 35% of calories should come from fat. Overall, people should do what feels right in the long term. Health is made out to be too complex when really all we need to do is track our nutrition and listen to our bodies. I personally think vegan and keto can be equally beneficial if done correctly, yet they both take a lot of research and dedication.
tim, what do you think of the slow carb diet for autoimmune diseases? with it including legumes in it?
Cheers Tim!
Great stuff
When I do keto, I’ll sometimes eat one fun sized candy before an intense workout doesn’t seem to throw me off.
Great video. Here is what is missing. What percentage of total calories (range?) is from carbs in slow carb diet? And if I have eat slow carb breakfast and lunch but keto dinner, and then fast for 16 hours, would I be in Ketosis for some time? Approximately how long?
I've been keto for over a year. Initially what I thought was a keto diet wasn't even close. This is more about just how many carbs we have in our diets - even when you think you've cut them, you're not even close to keto. So I made a database which I still use, I record everything, it's almost automatic. Say I cook 3 eggs, with 1 tab of butter and 50 grams of cheddar cheese: All I have to enter is eg tab 3, next row bu tab 1, next row che tab 50, the grams and calories are automatically filled in, added up, calculated. So for over a year now I can say that I've been keto almost all the time. Weightloss, I find that I have to consistently exercise or at least walk around all day -or I don't lose weight. And calories count. If you figure 2000/day is 'normal,' I've been consuming 1500/day for almost two weeks now and I've dropped a pound -this is because I've used the pandemic as an excuse to just sit around.
I like keto. Know when you hit the wall while exercising, in a run or a hike - and you think 'oh, I'm gonna die if I don't get something to eat...' that's carb addiction. On three hour paddles I'd consistently hit the wall at 90 minutes. Well, you may feel out of gas, but you're a few miles out to sea so you still have to paddle back in. You shift into a lower gear and slug away thinking I can't make another stroke. But you get to shore. However loading your kayak on your car is all wonky and you're weak. I've also been on some 6-8 hour paddles with only a few snacks - same thing, except 5 hours of 'oh, why did I do this?' That is your body running out of glucose and shifting to ketosis.
Once you're keto this stops happening. I'll go out for a 3-4 hour paddle, no breakfast before, no snacks during - just black coffee and water. You feel about the same the entire time, sure you get tired, but at the end when I load up my kayak? I don't feel weak, it's as easy as it was in the morning before I left for the beach.
Keto's a magic bullet primarily in that it breaks the carb addict behavior. You don't feel you need to eat every hour, you don't need breakfast, lunch, dinner (I'm one meal a day now) and your energy level stays consistent. If I go for an overnight camp I don't bring any food. Don't need to, don't miss it.
I fast 18-20 hours a day. When I started it was 16 hours and I'd be watching the clock that last hour - but I could do it. When I was carb and fasted over night for a blood draw - I was hangry, felt like I was starving, and had an energy bar ready to go as soon as that needle came out of my arm.
Carbs are now said to not really be addictive, okay. I've attended a few AA meetings with a friend where I felt silly, they talked about pills and booze; I thought, 'that's how I am with cookies and corn chips.' They're not heroin and you're not going to destroy your family life because of carbs - except those few days after Halloween when you raid your kid's bag of goodies.
btw you do have to be really diligent like Tim says. I once tried a low-carb diet for two months without understanding you couldn't be low-fat at the same time. In a way everyone should try this, it's stupid but you have wild dreams about cookies.
Oh. Cognitively? No difference or a very slight improvement - more due to consistent feeling from a steady energy level than anything magic. (My ex-doctor when I told him I was keto 70-80% fats usually 5% carbs immediately wanted to know 'How's your brain working?' No clue, and sadly, no curiosity.) Constant snacking. I was a snacker before and during keto. I don't really want these snacks, often a pinch of salt satisfies the urge. Keto has cured bad eating habits in that I 'don't eat that,' but all the bad impulses are still there a year later. And even when I beat them, I'm thinking about yeah! I beat that urge - so I'm still thinking about the urge. And going off once every week or so is no big deal. I can tell I'm in ketosis because my body temp seems to go up from 97 to 98.6, I feel a little warmer in the center of my torso, and my mouth feels morning yucky starting before midnight every day. (It's not a big deal).
I also want to look into the slow carb diet. If there's one thing I miss on the keto diet - it's oatmeal. I figured out that I can eat a cup of oatmeal every couple of days without going above the 10% carbs max, so I'll go through periods where I do this a lot and then I'll simply forget about it. And I don't find keto boring, but I do worry that I'm eating too much dairy. Hope this is interesting and helpful to somebody.
Do I really think someone is going to read all that ?
I did
Me too
This was hugely useful. Thanks Tim :)
Timi, don't worry your diet still works, no matter what people say, I try it, and it is for long time, i lost so much weight that people thought i was not felling well had to stop it and start eating rubish, even now after 3 years still have not put back, as i always have your diet in my mind and really, it just became a routine and a healty habbit, that is all, like a minimalist reduces the products to have in the house, the person who saves the planet by not buying too many botles, this is simmilar, eat often, 4 times, any doctor will say this, eat a healthy breakfast the most important meal of the day, rich in protein fiber, healthy and low carb, and reduce sugar in your body, there is so much of stuff that high sugar can do to your body in a bad way, your diet is exactly what our ancestors was having, no donuts, burgers, you are not going wrong with this diet, there are so many out there to judge your diet. this diet should be on any magazine and on any food label, and in the schools, this healthy style diet that used to be called just healthy meal si now in a book format, and should be more than in a book. MY OPINION!
TIM, what about someone with reactive hypoglycemia and insulin resistance bc of PCOS (undiagnosed for over 15 years..so years of running 5 miles a day and starving myself). I am following a commercial plan based on ketosis (with a DR.) and I feel very good and even keeled..for the first time in YEARS. I have 50 pounds to lose, I just wonder if I will ever be able to have beans again.

I have been waiting for this video from you!!! Thanks!
The important thing is that there is absolutely no confusion or argument over which diet to follow nowadays among netizens. Finally, the world can all agree on something.
Great video, simple explanation anyone can comprehend. Thanks!
Why do I keep looking at his hat? I cant stop.
Can someone please my question if you know? 🙏🏻🙏🏻 is low carb the same as slow carb?
Great video!!! Thank you!!!
Hey guys, i'm a little confused about certain food types and weather or not they are allowed in the slow carb diet. Whenever I google for slow carb breakfast the following 3 types of food would pop up as "some of the best ingredients" - Berrys, Oatmeal and lowfat quark (? not sure if this is the right english name)
But I think the book is pretty clear about those 3 things, 1. No fruits (berrys), 2. no white foods (oatmeal), and 3. no milk products whatsoever (quark)
Someone care to clear up my confusion? :)

ketogenic diet is not too difficult, especially for people who don't feel the need to drink alcohol.
Gary Dean Check out Simnett Nutrition, the guy has the diet thing figured out, hands down!
Gary Dean I agree but not when it come to family get togethers

It is coming off a high carb vegan diet lol miss fruit so bad..
Simnett Nutrition is a vegan, dont even waste your time...
the claim of too much protein interfering with ketosis has been disproven. all else was very speculative. i utilized slow carbs for a first step, then lowered them continuously. go for it. but don't get discouraged to attempt full keto.

I'm sure Tim means well, but ketosis is not a "binary state". It's a continuum, there are degrees of ketosis. What's correct is that some people have been advocating an extreme form of the ketogenic diet where the goal is to maximize the level of ketones in the blood - the more, the better. A better solution is not to actively try to achieve a certain threshold of blood BHB concentration, but to simply eat very low carbs, moderate/high-protein and moderate-high fat (depending on whether you're trying to lose or maintain body fat). That will result in most people in some form of (mild) ketosis, but more importantly, it will induce the switch to burning fat that people are looking for.
Reminder: To keep it healthy, achieve this with whole foods and without supplements. And consult your doctor!

Most people fail on ketogenic diets because they crave sugar and processed foods and think they have to live off bacon and lettuce. However there are tons of recipes out there that see you over the junk cravings phase, like Fathead pizza and recipes using truly non spiking sweeteners. I would also recommend any IBS sufferers investigate the ketogenic diet especially if you have tried eliminating trigger foods or if a low FODMAP diet has not seen an improvement in symptoms.

I’ve been ketovore for 2 weeks and the fat has gone straight to my mid section, I’ve lost muscle and gained flab just eating meat bone broth and eggs. I can go hours without food so I’m fat adapted but I hate the way it makes me feel, like I’ve aged 10 years. I’ve done this diet before and it suited me.
Very cool video. More protein, plus the fiber for the intestinal bacteria creates more fat burning. And you can enter into ketosis by fasting. Slow carb and IF are a great combination for me.
I absolute love that plant wall, Tim.
How did you make it? If you did that is!
Wow very informative. thanks Tim.
Keto + IF + cheat meal is the best combo for me.. i hv reduced 25 pounds in 9 mnts and almost near my goal weight.. keto is not boring if u learn to cook some alternatives to yr favourite receipes.. it supresses hunger and cravings, so there is no need to struggle with your will power.. why take exogenous ketones when yr body can make it? Anyhow I understand slow carb is beneficial to many but keto is super beneficial to most..

i tried keto, im just 5'-1". 49kg. i could only do it for 9 days. by day 10 i felt fatigue and extreme cravings. i was about to faint, i started feeling dizzy i quickly ate rice.
Marvelous
Thanks for the video! Wondering if I can omit beans/legumes? What will the difference be? I’ve been doing this version of the SCD for 5 days and already feel better!
It seems like soups could be one of the basic cornerstones of this diet because a lot of soup recipes have the vegetables and beans. And, this diet seems to emphasize convenience and prepping foods ahead, so soups are ideal for that. You can make a big, giant pot of soup, then freeze individual portions in freezer baggies. Then, you've always got something to eat!
Big salads could also be a natural go-to item for this diet because lots of vegetables and bean can be added to salads, too. Salads are good for warm and hot weather. For cold weather, one could make big platters of baked vegetables--delicious! For intermediate weather (spring/fall), the technique of Nishime cooking for vegetables is good. Then simply add the protein and the beans to your big vegetable dish--whether it be raw (salads), baked, or steamed (Nishime style). There are a lot of good Nishime recipes in Macrobiotic cook books.
Your awesome! Thanks!!
At 8:57 you say that there are 9,000 calories per pound of body fat.
There are roughly 3,500 calories in 1 lb of body fat.
As far as to whether or not you had lymes disease, why didn’t you get a blood test? That’s what I did, and I’m glad I did ‘cause I tested positive.
Thanks for all the good information!
Thank you for this info! It leads me to researching more about the slow carb diet :)
I was just thinking. Why is he wearing that head band 😂😂😂 thanks comment section for clarifying this.
Tim, seriously, the hat...bad bad bad. You look like a bald guy with a sweatband. Other than that, great vid.
But throw that thing out the window and un-friend whoever told you to wear it!

he is a balding white guy anyway.

Lol !
That's probably his "stoic" training: wear something ridiculous and not care about what people think about it..
This has never been a recommended approach in any marketing or salesmanship book I have read. On the other hand, it is important for a salesman to develop empathy, so if he is speaking to silly and disgusting people quite accustomed to being embarrassed, then I see your point.

What I miss most doing the ketogenic diet is fruit, especially on hot summer days. Once I got through the adaption period and was in ketosis for awhile I found that when I did eat carbs I didn't feel well. Personally the problem I have with "choosing" a slow carb diet is eating carbs is kind of like alcohol for an alcoholic, I'll rationalize and start to include other carbs in small amounts and next thing I know I'm back eating carbs in larger amounts. It's a slippery slope for me and others. I now allow myself to go back and forth between the ketogenic diet and the Paleo diet. If you can get through the adaptation period of the ketogenic diet and stick to it it's much easier to adhere to the Paleo diet when you need a break or just a bit more variety in your diet. It's also much easier to get back into ketosis than in the beginning when you first adapt to it. What I like about the ketogenic diet is I don't have to eat as much.
Eat small anounts of low carb fruits I do every day and stay in ketosis according to blood testing
The part you said that scares the shit out of me is that if I screw up on the Keto diet my blood lipid profile will be way outta wack ! Yikes can you go further into details on that topic ? Every once in a while I will get bored with ketosis after a week or 2 and will make a big plate of pasta with roughly 175 carbs and wonder how bad that really is when I have already had a bulletproof coffee earlier that day ? So my question is what happens in a high saturated fat day with protein and high carbs ?
Good explanation. The best way to explain it is "Fat Burns in a Carb Furnace" slow digesting carbs that is. :) Thats what they will teach you in N.A.S.M. school.
