After five years of Keto, I lost 60 lbs of fat, worked out during that time and achieved my weight fat content goal. Now I do time restricted eating 18 to 20 hours of fasting, them eat. Like the Dr said, limit the junk, but don’t deprive! I have been this way now for two years and haven’t gained one pound! Beef, fist, veggies, some fruits, toast, love toast, potatoes. Feel great and I continue working out on weights. I am 74 years of age by the way. 5’7”, 150 lbs weight, 10% body fat! 50 pushups, 20 pull-ups, some cycling, walking two or three miles a day, working on the yard and garden!

I tried vegan, I lost a bunch of weight. I tried Atkins, I lost a bunch of weight. I tried Keto, I lost a bunch of weight. They all work, but I found none of them sustainable. I found just being consistent with exercise and eating whole foods much easier and sustainable for the long run. Just eliminate processed foods and refined sugars.

Keto changed my life. Lost 33lbs in 3 months! It caused me to realize just how much sugar i was overconsuming. It raised my awareness on processed foods.(things you can achieve without Keto) It also put me in line with the ability to go omad as well as fasting. Reducing the sugar eliminated inflammation in my feet, fingers and knees that i thought was me getting "old." Nope it was the sugar. My joints feel 100% better than 10 yrars ago. At the very least Keto is a great dietary reset. For me it is my favorite way of eating so im like 90% on yet since i spend so much time in ketosis i have zero concern about going in and out of ketosis. Im not bound by that ideal. Being mostly OMAD and physically active I get away with eating whatever i want calorically but i invariably return to keto for weeks on end just because i feel better overall on it in general. I'd never be mad at someone for ditching Keto! Its not that serious. But me? I love Keto. But I'm not cultish about it. I would suggest for beginners 3 months of strict keto to get the full benefit and understanding of how to do it. As well as your bodys adaptatoon to it. In and out of ketosis early on you will never experience the fat burning machine your body can become when youre fat adapted.

I had the opposite experience on keto. Went there for diabetes and did lower my A1c. I was not obese BTW. On keto, my athletic performance (running and lifting) suffered terribly and I was never comfortable and was not easy to get along with. I quit keto after 6 months and got a CGM. I tested what I can eat and what really spikes my blood sugar, and came up with what seems a very healthy diet FOR ME. The diet is protein heavy, includes meat, certain fruits, vegetables and pasta (yes really). But I stay away from potatoes and rice for the most part, and I don’t eat much bread. I eat root vegetables like carrots and beets without issue. I stay far away from processed foods and most things with added sugar, except on very special occasions. I’ve concluded that we are all different and that there is no 1 solution for everyone. If keto works for you. Awesome! If not, find what does. But do the work to find it. You’ll be much happier and healthier.

Similar my friend. Keto 18 months pushed my A1C from 5.9 to 5.5 quick, but it never went lower. Even with intermittent fasting daily with 3 day fasts each month. What make sense to me is keto flatlines your blood glucose, but as you continue the liver pumps out glucose and keeps fasting glucose above 100. After keto destroyed my good lifetime LDL < 90-100 by pushing it up to 175, I had to make a change. Got a CGM just like you and found eating plant-based whole foods mostly with fish and almost no saturated fat and low fat in general, but blood glucose went from wild swings to very stable with peaks around 120 after higher carb meals and fasting levels in the 80s now. And my LDL dropped to 60 in a few months. A HOMA-IR test showed I had extreme insulin sensitivity now eating carb-base whole foot diet. CGM estimated my A1C around 5 now.

That sounds like a mainly whole foods, moderately low carb diet. That would be ideal or at least adecuate to a whol lot of people! Not for me, though! There's no way I can eat over more than 50g a day and not regret it! Higher prtein seems tobe better than higher fat for me, though. But higher fat was better to get adapted in the beginning.

  • @HillcrestGames

Keto was a great way to reset my obviously broken eating habits, as I was never hungry and had stable energy levels. It also helped me to totally reverse insulin resistance, and improved depression and anxiety to a point where I was able to get momentum in the right direction. I'm kind of banking on the idea that occasional keto can improve metabolic flexibility, but I don't think that's really clinically tested thoroughly yet. So every few months I do a couple weeks of keto now, but otherwise I do 30g fiber a day, and very high protein and very low saturated fat. Also Flexitarian and eat lots of quality fish like salmon, mountains of low-glycemic vegetables. My glucose is better than it was at the end of a strict 2 year keto diet alone, and I'm losing more weight. Closing in on 90 total pounds lost now.

if you want to discontinue Keto, I‘ve found I‘ve had just as good or even better physical strength and mental clarity by adopting a whole foods, mostly plant based diet in which I would separate eating fats and carbs together. This last point has been key to me, as I would get crippling anxiety following most meals and finally got to understand it was caused by the carb insulin spike and the consequential fat absorption into my cells. This is still very much underresearched, but I think it makes sense from an insulin-based perspective and there seems to be strong evidence that the combination of high fat, high carb (more so if refined) just simply doesn‘t occur naturally and that our brains seem to get superwired in terms of hormonal response which can definitely induce anxiety attacks. Further there is research showing that ketogenic diets don‘t cure insulin resistance but merely work to isolate the issue while you‘re not consuming carbs, and that the real culprit is fat storage in the cells (by the way also the cause of Diabetes 2 through fatty liver cells). In any way, I feel great eating complex healthy carbs, and when I do crave something fatty I merely eat a fatty meal, like salmon, cheese or meat with some salad

I'm still mostly keto, after exceeding my weight-loss goal of 70 lbs (in 6 months), but I'm not hard-core keto. I also believe that avoiding crap food is really the key. I love steamed leafy greens and eat them quite often, even though they knock me down to a low-ketosis level (or kick me out of ketosis altogether). I've heard many proponents of the ketogenic diet declare that good, leafy green veggies don't really count against the max-carb target (20g, or whatever), since the leafy greens metabolize MUCH more slowly that surgary/starchy foods. I do still avoid starches. No pasta, potatoes, or rice. No vegetable or seed oils, either. Many of my friends and family have been impressed by my get-healthy journey and results, and have sought my advice on how to start keto. I tell them to, first, cut out all boxed/packed processed crap food first. Next, focus on fatty meats and organ meats. Then, read the packages, if sugar is added (or has a high-sugar level), put it back on the shelf. Plant-based and Ketogenic proponents are often played off as enemies of each other. I am keto, but I believe that teh important common element that our two lifestyles have with each other is that we avoid processed food and go for foods that are as close as possible to how they occur in nature. I've always been a firm believer that the best option for anything rarely lies at either extreme, but is somewhere in the middle. Finding that middle ground that works for you is the hard part.

As someone who struggled with insulin resistance and weight fluctuations, discovering HyperKeto was a game-changer. Unlike fad diets that promise quick fixes but often lead to disappointment, HyperKeto offers a sustainable approach to weight loss and improved metabolic health. By limiting carbohydrate intake and prioritizing healthy fats, this program helps stabilize blood sugar levels and promote fat loss without sacrificing taste or satisfaction. Trust me, HyperKeto is not just a diet-it's a lifestyle transformation.

So I gave it up because I’ve got kids to look after. Listening to your body is most important. I didn’t account for electrolyte, mineral or calorie deficits. It could have ended badly.

This is a benefit for those who do not do exercise. 4 servings of Brussel sprouts equals 16 g of carbs that's under "extreme" keto. Listen to his percentage on 4500 calories. I was on Keto for one year, and then Carnivore diet for 3 years. Everything was going along swimmingly, until one day, I had to be evacuated. With no other food options to eat, I had to eat some bread and veg. Suddenly, I was violently ill, and needed emergency medical attention. Most people on Carnivore say it's because the food is poison, and it's proof we shouldn't be eating it. I was advised that my gut biome was lacking in diversity, and my body was basically rejecting anything that wasn't meat. I was encouraged to include vegetables slowly (cruciferous), and that although it may be painful at first (gassy, bloating), stick with it. Now, can eat a wide range of vegetables and other foods without any ill effects, and I retain all of the benefits I had on Carnivore, and moving back to a sort of Keto lifestyle. Sometimes, with food, people need to think how their bodies will react if they find themselves in an emergency, without access to their normal foods. Will they react in a life-threatening way like me?
Basically, I've learnt that Carnivore diet is excellent for resetting your body, Keto is excellent for continuing health benefits, while increasing gut biome, and then you can build from there.
There's a lot of militancy sometimes from folks who just think that Keto/Carnivore is the only way forward, rejecting success stories from other lifestyles. I had one RUclips "doctor" basically disregard research into the prospect of people being predisposed to suiting certain diets i.e. Person A suits Carnivore better, Person B suits Keto better, Person C suits moderation in all foods better.
I'm delighted to see the open-mindedness in the comments, and your approach to health too. It's refreshing, and much needed in a tribal dietary world.

I have no problem with this!
Best I can figure, most starches are fine in reasonable amounts as long as fiber is there to slow things up... Same for whole fruits...
As long as you're insulin sensitive. It takes a lot of starch to overwhelm your metabolism, though it's possible. Refined starches with no fiber is a bad start. That's the fuel. Refined sugar is the detonator.
Fructose from natural sources isn't that plentiful - an apple has less than you'd expect. But once refined sugar (half fructose) gets added to everything you eat, your liver and pancreas get absolutely hammered. Dietary fat gets stored for later but never used, visceral fat increases, and as soon as those visceral fat cells get filled past capacity? Insulin resistance incoming.
If you've ended up here, you're fighting a metabolism that is driving your insulin so high you may require 3-5 days of glucose depletion before you can even start burning fat again. Keto to the rescue. It's the "nuke the site from orbit" cure for insulin resistance, and dammit - it works.
Wanna keep doing it? Yay. Do you *need* to once insulin sensitivity is restored? Likely not required, so long as you respect the fructose moving forward.

Dr. Atkins' and Dr. Volek's research has confirmed that many long term T2D patients never fully recover their metabolic flexibility. If you accept the Atkins protocol as 20g net carbs plus controlled protein, it seems that many can not handle over 35g net carbs even after losing significant weight and achieving normal body weight. I am sure that an athletic Dr. Attia can handle a much larger net carb / protein load than older, obese, T2D patients.
It is not that this comment will offend the keto community. I think that it is instead that many in the keto community have discounted the therapeutic significance of this (even Nutritional Ketosis, not 4:1 Ketosis) diet for the average social media weight loss dieter. I would love to be able to go back to eating rice and vegetables, but my blood sugar (and likely insulin) would still go through the roof, even after seven years on keto trying to recover.

I'd recommend getting the CACS (coronary artery calcium score, derived from a CT scan of heart) and CIMT (carotid artery intima thickness test) at around age 40. Me, I'd mistakenly eaten low-fat (which by default is high-carb, which is high-sugar, which is bad) and as a result almost certainly by that point in time had coronary artery disease. Wish I'd known by then. Instead, at 56, acute coronary artery disease was diagnosed. Now I've been strict keto for 17 months in hope of healing and extending life. I think keto is a good baseline something we never really had before. For people used to eating basically junk for a number of years it may take eating keto for a prolong period of time to get your body back to a normal level. Once you get back to that reset then I think you can start venturing outward a little bit going back when you need to.
For me rice is so difficult to not eat as well as some pasta. I'm more or less ok with no breads or desserts but definitely try to keep rice and pasta to a minimum as well as not eating processed foods. One of the best changes I think I made was moving away from oils for cooking instead use lard, tallow or butter.

I see the carnivores, and great if they love it, and just think no way I could do that. Humans are different to animals in so many ways, art, music, architecture etc..., food, through culinary invention and recipes handed down between generations, is another form of human expression and connection. I've been on keto for 3 years now, though it is more of a low carb diet (with electrolytes) than high fat, and am maintaining a lean body weight with moderate weekly exercise (fasted trail running). For sustainability I take a day or two off, every couple of weeks, so you don't have to challenge yourself with deprivation. So you really can have your vegetable curry and eat it as well....

How do you feel when you take a day off? And how long does it take to get back into ketosis? I’ve been keto for 3 months now (I started it because I was developing severe hypoglycemia with carb intake). But I feel that I’m starting to look older. My skin looks scaly and dry (despite consuming a lot of water and electrolytes). My face appre are to have more “sag” then usual. I haven’t lost a ton of weight (wasn’t really aiming to) so that’s not an explanation regarding the older looking skin. I’m a little scared of carbs because I don’t want the hypoglycemia to come slamming back. I do feel great on keto for the most part. I’m just not sure how to proceed with carb cycling 😬

I do look forward to that cheat day every few weeks usually (can also take it or leave it when it comes around), but also look forward to returning to keto after a short break. Exercise wise, I do find running a little harder, but that is only because my body is having to adapt to using glycogen as an energy source when it is normally running on ketones. I don't feel significantly different, but I think it helps sustainability of the keto diet for me, as it lessens temptation. Not sure about your skin, maybe try adding some collagen protein to your diet, and I also usually take half a multivitamin tablet most days to cover off any vitamin deficiencies from the diet. Hope this helps.@@stephanienewton6618

And I missed replying to your query about how long does it take to get back into ketosis. To be honest I’m starting to think this blood glucose thing is a hormonal issue (I’m almost 50) so I’m starting to research bioidentical hormones. This may give me some more flexibility to eat some carbs and not crash. Or at least cycle in and out of keto when I want.

What I found over time was: carbs help my weight lifting and HIIT. So here's when I intake (non flour, non processed) carbs: pre/post lifting weights, and when I do time restricted feeding, seems intermittant fasting allowed my body to use carbs during the re-feed without the usual swelling and foggines. Things I learned; I eat more organ meats and I add a little fermented food to my dinner or lunch virtually every day as a side dish rhe way korens do.
My only rule is no processed foods, no sugar and no fast food and I enjoy wine and gin but keep alcohol to a minimum.
And thats it. I find that i don't crave sweet things, but if I wanted a bite of something I would.
I do not feel deprived, I enjoy my food, i eat rice, potatoes if I want to. And I find I am a bit more open to trying new dishes and tastes etc. Fresh, in season is also important. But I don't sweat the small stuff.

Studies saying saturated fat causes heart disease and high LDL is bad are fraudulent, using statistical gymnastics to promote the fat is bad and sugar is just empty calories dogma. These studies were funded by the sugar industry and the doctors were paid off.
People with high cholesterol live longer with less heart disease. Our liver makes 5x the cholesterol we eat every day.
40% of our brain tissue is made of cholesterol and the brain makes it itself. Do you think it may be important? The normal range for total cholesterol was 300mg/dl prior to the advent of statins.

Still on keto and going strong. Whenever I eat carbs/sugar, I don't feel too well.

I feel what he's saying. I'm doing keto to clean my system and get rid of most of my visceral body fat. I'm definitely not staying this way for life because I just love food too much lol. But for the time being it's a great tool to reach my health goals.

If you don't address the carb addiction you'll likely be battling it once again.

Atkins diet renamed keto. I lost weight but my concern was artery damage from IR. I cheat about twice a month. At age 75 with two heart attacks, my numbers are excellent. I suggest you consider CRP lab to see your inflammation marker. It matters.

When my fasting blood glucose goes under 85 consistently, I would like to eat some potato salad again. I would also like to have some fried rice. But, I think it would be extremely unfair to myself if I do this now. I am making such good progress right now, it will be silly to derail it.

Even if it goes under 85, such foods could spike it, which has negative effects that can be developing rather serious problems before fasting BG would tell you. This is not monitored in the mainstream medical community.

Just finished a 72 hour fast a week after beginning keto/intermittent fasting. I’m down 12lbs in 9 days and have gone through a total reset of how 😅 view food and the quantity of food I consume. If you eat so much that you feel really full then you’ve over done it. Should feel content but never stuffed. The less you eat the longer you’ll live without health problems.

I, personally, do not crave deserts such as chocolate cake at all because I am completely convinced that they are not food and should not be eaten. But apples, that I find tempting. Especially, if it's an apple from my own garden, meaning an old variety, not too high in sugar, no chemicals... I actually eat apples sometimes even though they are not a keto food. But I think I cured my insulin resistance so it should not be much of a problem.
