  • The PG-2K controller from Retroaktiv can control any JX-3P. Factory 3P, Kiwi modded 3P or any 3P/MKS-30 CC modded model. In the case of the Kiwi, all Kiwi mods are supported and it makes it so much easier to use the arcane Kiwi mod.

    Growing up I listened to so much synth-pop and it's only natural that my own music takes inspiration from many of the acts I loved back then. I still love them and listen to them!
    Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Erasure, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, The Human League, Propaganda. FGTH, Ultravox, OMD, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, Alphaville, A-ha as well as loads of artists doing what is now called Italo Disco. And many more great acts like Nik Kershaw, Spandau Ballet, Wham, Dire Straits ++

    This unit looks amazing. The JX3P was the first synth I ever bought and is still my favorite synth today. A couple of years ago I returned home to the UK and got it out of storage to find that the internal memory had gone and that I had lost all my presets which was a shame as they featured on all my early vinyl releases. These days I have the Roland Boutique version but it's not quite the same as having the beast up and running. Cheers!

      Thanks! Read the manual, it'll tell you exactly how to operate the sequencer. This is a very simple step sequencer and you have to combine the keyboard notes and the tie- or rest buttons to program it.

    Cool video man. The one thing that kills the original style controllers for me is that you have to set the switch on the rear panel of the JX3-P to “Programmer” to edit a sound, and so you can’t feed the synth a MIDI sequence and edit a patch at the same time. Is this possible with the retroaktiv? I can’t find any info on this online (mine is a stock 3P by the way)

    This thing looks **awesome**! I am curious though, why only 32k onboard? Is that like a million patches and plenty or was there a technical reason? Just asking bc memory is so cheap these days I'm sort of surprised 32k is a thing that can be bought anymore.

    • @retroaktivsynthesizers5075
      @retroaktivsynthesizers5075 2 года назад

      We use FRAM memory because it is nearly indestructible. It's not cheap like nor flash, but it is the most reliable. We didn't want to get into using memory that can develop bad sectors over time. There are different types of memory for different applications. If you look at memory for microcontrollers, it's not usually very big, ranging from a few k to a couple of megs. With NOR-FLASH and stuff like that, it gets bigger, but requires more program memory and bandwidth to maintain. For the SD and USB type of memory, yes it's cheap, but there are a lot of requirements that a small microcontroller-based system like PG-2K can't handle. In terms of the types of memory used with a system like ours, something that's small like 32k can cost a few bucks for a single memory chip.

    Aaaaah, the glorious 12-bit sound of the early 80's. Why can't modern gear offer at least the option to switch to 12-bit?
    I've always wondered whether just replacing the modern DAC with a 8/12-bit like the one on the JX-3P would give you that instant 80's sound. Or would the CPU calculations preceding the DAC also need to be 12-bit?

    • @retroaktivsynthesizers5075
      @retroaktivsynthesizers5075 2 года назад +2

      That wouldn't work. The DAC in the case of the 3P is only controlling the resolution of the sliders. The waveforms on this are not wavetable based, so the DAC resolution doesn't have anything to do with them or what you hear, beyond the resolution of the LFO waveforms and the envelopes. If you wanted a "12-bit sound", then something like the DSS-1 would be an example of a device that uses 12-bit samples, where you actually do hear the 12-bit quality.

    • @jacquesmertens3369
      @jacquesmertens3369 2 года назад

      @@retroaktivsynthesizers5075 Well, I did check the JX-3P architecture before posting. The CPU is directly linked to the DAC. The DAC processes the digital output of the CPU with either 8-bit of 12-bit precision.
      Starting from a 32- or 64-bit CPU in today's world, why would it not be possible to make that CPU send 12-bit values to a 12-bit DAC?

    • @retroaktivsynthesizers5075
      @retroaktivsynthesizers5075 2 года назад

      @@jacquesmertens3369 You can use a 12 bit dac with a 32 or 64 bit CPU. I misread the comment and thought you were talking about replacing the DAC in the synth itself.

      Despite what people think, the BCR-2000 will not work for a good number of Kiwi parameters, especially anything requiring bidirectional communication. And functions like the envelope mod select (Where you've got to select the envelope, the polarity, and the envelope amount separately) will take up a full page of knobs there. We've done a lot of streamlining to the interface, where 2+ parameters will be combined on a single control (Like the bipolar env amount sliders), which allows us to have a fairly uncluttered control surface and user interface. There is a lot going on behind the scenes here to make this a seamless control surface. That's why it took almost 2 years of coding to do it. We're supporting 6 separate synths, each with its own CC, sysex, and DAT(Bank/object dump/receive) format. It's not just a control surface. It deals with everyaspect of the MIDI implementation for all of these. If we just wanted a bunch of knobs on a box, then yes, it could be done cheaper. But for something this complex with the amount of features it has, is going to be priced higher, and we're also catering to a very niche market here. If you're interested in seeing everything this unit does (Most features are not covered in this video), the manual is posted on the page that Espen has linked to. If you compare the available programmers feature by feature, I know of none that have the feature set the PG-2K has. I understand the price isn't for everyone. Luckily, there's plenty of other options, including free iPad editors. It just depends on what you want and need.
